ISSUE OF PARTY SUPREMACY

However, one very thorny issue within the embattled APC remains the definition of the leadership as occasioned by the new mantra of supremacy.

It would be recalled that, penultimate week, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, issued a statement stating that Tinubu was the National Leader of the party; the ink on the paper which carried the statement had not dried before the Presidency issued a counter statement insisting that Buhari remains the leader of the party, without prejudice to whatever contributions made by those who were the founding leaders.

Sunday Vanguard was told by a Tinubu loyalist – and correctly so – that the issue of party supremacy, as espoused by the former Lagos governor and Buhari, is good for the growth of the APC.Privately, some of the leaders of the party, who are obviously not on the same page with Tinubu, like Saraki; former Governors Danjuma Goje,Sani Yerima, Kabiru Gaya; and former Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, National Chairman, Chief Audu Ogbeh; as well as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, are said not to be comfortable with the connotation that presently exists on the term, PARTY SUPREMACY

Verily, in the event that the APC takes a “position, that position should be binding on all”, the Tinubu loyalist insisted.

However, other leaders of the APC are insisting on the need for the party hierarchy to define the concept of party supremacy.

At the Friday APC NEC meeting, the issue could not be discussed because of what a source described as “some sensibilities that were not to be ruffled”.

The growing consensus among party leaders across the three divides – Buhari, Tinubu and Atiku – is the need for the party to quickly determine “who and what constitute party supremacy which would be codified”


BOT CHAIRMANSHIP: THE FIRE NEXT TIME

The ruling party may be heading for another round of crisis in the contest for who becomes its Board of Trustees, BoT, Chairman.

Whereas it was a known “fact that Tinubu, while lobbying Atiku to support Senator Ahmed Lawan for the Senate presidency, with a possible pledge to assist Atiku clinch the BoT slot, some loyalists of Tinubu are now proposing that he should become the BoT Chairman”, a party source told Sunday Vanguard, “but that may be a far shot because Oyegun is from the South and appointing another person from the South to be BoT Chair, would not be fair. In fact, that was why Oyegun’s job was in jeopardy because it was part of a grand agenda”.

But this argument may not hold water because Buhari is from the North just as Atiku is also from the North.

If the report of Vanguard is anything to go by, then the crisis in the governing party, the All Progressives Congress (APC, may just be far from over as its says President Muhammadu Buhari and a national leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu are yet to agree on the way out of the crisis.

The crisis came to being with the leadership tussle in the National Assembly where Senator Bukola Saraki and Hon. Yakubu Dogara defied the party to emerge Senate President and Speaker of the House of Reps respectively.


According to the report, part of the reasons for the seeming prolonged process of resolving the crisis in the All Progressives Congress, APC, may be the slightly differing positions of President Muhammadu Buhari and Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Specifically, the sources disclosed that the Friday NEC meeting of the party “brought to the open the seeming centrifugal positions of Mr. President and Asiwaju.”

One of the sources added: “At the meeting between the governors and the warring parties that followed the APC NEC parley, Sokoto State governor, Aminu Tambuwal, was mandated to chair a committee of three that would come up with possible resolutions to the crisis.

BUHARI’S POSITION
“It was an open discussion at the NEC meeting that whereas Mr. President has consistently expressed his dissatisfaction at the truncation of the party’s procedure for the emergence of the leaders of the National Assembly, the position he has since taken has been one of reconciliation and not outright antagonism to the leadership of the National Assembly.”

Sunday Vanguard was told that Tinubu’s position, which had been misconstrued in many quarters as antagonistic, was merely a reflection of the need to enforce party supremacy at all times.

One of the arrowheads of the Tinubu group told Sunday Vanguard: “Asiwaju is not being rigid. He just believes it is not proper to kick off a government on a note of disobedience to party position by members of the National Assembly. It sends a wrong signal”.


WHAT TINUBU WANTED

For instance, it was gathered that one of the conditions put forward by the former governor of Lagos State was that both Senate President Abubakar Bukola Saraki and Speaker Yakubu Dogara “should not be invited to the meeting”. Investigations into how the Friday meeting of the APC NEC went the way it did suggest that whereas Tinubu gave some conditions, those opposed to him ensured that his position did not hold.

A top APC member privy to the happenings in the ruling party told Sunday Vanguard: “”The second condition he put forward was that in the event that the two leaders of the National Assembly were invited, they should be made to commit to an apology letter to the party.”

That way, it was learnt, it would be on record that both men went against the grain of their political party.

“Unfortunately”, the top party leader said, “none of these could be achieved.

“And you should understand. This is a time when members of the party should engage a cohesive mode rather than one that would alienate more members. It is bad enough that we already have a crisis on our hands. To further entrench positions would not be in the interest of the party.”


BUHARI LOYALISTS TAG WITH ATIKU

Sunday Vanguard was to further learn that already, “there is a groundswell of coalition between some party faithful loyal to President Buhari and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar”.

The source went on: “Mind you”, it is not for the love of Atiku. But it is gradually becoming imperative that whoever within the party that would attempt to ring-fence the President with people that would become malleable should be checked”.

Indeed, it was discovered that when APC’s National Chairman, Chief John Odigie Oyegun, held talks with the President, last week, the fears of the former were assuaged by the latter on the insinuation that he (Oyegun) could lose his position following his acceptance of the emergence of Saraki and Dogara as Senate President and House Speaker.

“In fact, Mr. President told our party Chairman not to lose sleep; that the rumours about his possible removal from office can never happen”.

Sunday Vanguard was told that that was why the party reposed a vote of confidence in its Chairman at the Friday NEC meeting.

I admire ex-Gov Fashola a lot for his excellent performance while in office. However, one major blight and a black spot in his otherwise good record is the mismanagement of the educational system in Lagos, and the LASU crisis in particular.

Should LASU still be classified as a viable institution of learning? Maybe the place should just be shutdown, and a new University started in it's place. This undending crisis and wastage of precious time of young people who spend 99.9% of the academic year doing aluta continua, rather than learning is becoming too much.

Students of the Lagos State University (LASU), have expressed their displeasure over the recent events in their institution which they have blamed on the institution’s management.

According to the Lagos State University Students’ Union (LASUSU), the management has not been fair to the students by postponing their first semester examinations (which they were supposed to start on Monday, July 6), indefinitely.


Speaking during a press briefing organised to brief the media at the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM), Ikeja, Lagos on Monday afternoon, president of LASUSU, Wasiu Adeyemi noted that the management was not organised enough and had to make the students pay for their recklessness.

He said: “It was with a saddened heart that the students’ union of the Lagos State University received the official bulletin of the management on the 3rd of July, 2015 wherein the scheduled Hamattan semester examination which ought to begin on 6 July 2015 (today), was postponed indefinitely by management.

“We say this action of the management is destabilizing, draconian, demoralising and ill-tuned. At a period where the university is in a state of anarchy, chaos, confusion and disorderliness and the students only see the planned examinations as an avenue to return sanity to the university environment, but this action of the management has added to an existing injury of students’ populace on campus.

“From the aforementioned official bulletin, the school management based the postponement on two reasons; the inability of some students to pay school fees and register for the semester, the inability of the university senate to sit and ratify the reviewed academic calendar.


After condemning the activities of the institution’s management, the students have now given the Lagos state government a 48-hour ultimatum to wade into the crisis or cope with the terror that they may unleash on the school management.

The students’ union leader noted that the state governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, has not deemed it fit to visit the institution first hand to see the happenings himself, which he claimed was highly condemnable. “It is therefore the students’ union’s position, that the state governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, should live to his responsibility as the visitor to the university by giving a direction on this unending issues, for we strongly believe that power remains not as an instrument of negotiation, he should come out boldly and save the academic soul and career of 11, 333 Lasuites from the claws of the lions that have held us to ransom

“It is in light, that the Lagos State University Students’ Union hereby issue a 48-hour ultimatum to the management of the university, the state government and all parties involved, to resolve these lingering issues and do the needful and ensure students are called for examination on or before Thursday, 9th of July, 2015,” he said

This looks like a frame up by CP Police to keep his job.

To be honest I was dumb founded watching Pastor Bakare earlier today on his program Moment Of Truth. He actually spoke in parables but the smart will understand. In his two weeks ago or so program he called Buhari Mr Inetergrity and today he was simply hitting the General Hard for dinning with devils. He practically said Mr Buhari wants to fight corruption from now on and not wanting to look at the past and also that he( Bakare) is going to be watching. after 2yrs he will know how much of anti corruption war is being waged. From his sermon it will appear Buhari made him an offer to join in his govt but he was not interested becouse he feels Buhari is having a pact with some corrupt people and so he wants to remain clean and not tarnish his name working with Buhari. He actually said a lot but like I said, he said them in parables. Every member of his church was stunned, flabbergasted and could not say a word. It shocked me too. But come to think of it, how can anybody emerge as President of Nigeria not having anything to do with corrupt elements; is that possible? We can talk about that going forward when impunity is killed and sanity restored in our country but before March 28 2015 nobody would have become President working with only decent people. Buhari may have worked with corrupt folks to be President but I expect him to now appoint decent Men to work with him. So I don't understand what Pastor bakare is saying he can't work with a Man who has dropped his Principles of corrupt free Man. Buhari needs Bakare's help and Bakare wants to chiken out. What wld pastor Bakare had done differently from PMB pre march 28 2015? Becouse Buhari had tried it on his own for 3 previous times and failed.

So essentially, what will please Pastor Bakare is for Buhari to turn around and jail all corrupt people who helped in win the presidential election, including Tinubu? Abi

Why has Buhari not consolidated on these gains to defeat Boko Haram like he promised.
Now our President is begging Boko Haram to come and negotiate. All bravado of campaigns has evaporated into thin air.

I thought a peace meeting was held under the aegis of APC NEC, the highest decision making body of APC. It was chaired by President Buhari.
After the meeting Oyegun and Rochas Okorocha (nominated spokesman to address the press on such high level meetings) told the public that every quarrel is now resolved.

If the worst happens , tinubu will simply take a step back from active party activities without being active at the national level .
If the character and performance of the government becomes similar to the previous ones, then you can expect him to pull ACN out of APC and leaving behind those remnants of PDP like oyinlola.

So basically APC of today will become effectively new PDP since most of those left behind when ANPP and ACN pull out will be people like Sani Yerima, Atiku Abubakar, Saraki, Kwankwaso, Ameachi, Oshiomole, Dogara, Akume, Gemade, etc. All former PDP men. And Buhari, by default will remain with them as member of new PDP.

My honest opinion is that a fatal mistake was made by the party in scheduling a meeting with Buhari the very morning, and moment, the National Assembly was scheduled for inauguration. It instigated the scheduling of that meeting? The clear answer is that, the fatal meeting was called at the instance of Tinubu to clear the way for Gbajabiamilla and Lawan to emerge.

Hence the blame for the debacle should be put in Tinubu's door step. From the live telephone conversation with Buhari's media aide, Garba Shehu that morning after Saraki and Dogara emerged, you could read that Buhari deliberately refused to attend that meeting because the Presidency felt slighted regarding the way the meeting was scheduled. I have the recordings.

With the kind of status they have, especially Tinubu and Ogbonnaya Onu (Former founders of the constituent parties that formed APC), I would have thought at the very least these 2 should be members of APC NEC. Akande should also be in NEC by virtue of his position as last Chairman of ACN.

But then, what does the APC constitution say?? Please educate us some more.

If Lai, Tinubu, and Onu were just coming to sit as floor members, then I can imagine the pain and humiliation Tinubu would have felt to come and sit in the crowd and watch Saraki and Dogara at the high table during the photo session, and be asked to leave with the rest of ordinary party members when the real NEC meeting commences. He could collapse from heart failure.

Rochas Okorocha does not care which way the cookies crumble.
