Sharing info about your school shouldn't be a problem in fact that's always been the norm when I first visited the US travel thread far back in 2010. First,if I decide to make inquiry about the school on your transcript you should know that what follows after is strictly on me. From writing my SOP,sending recommendation letters, sending and responding to GC's mails etc would be on me.

I might be looking for a school with an affordable deficit, a reasonable GA,Tuition waiver, similar research interest etc,. Surprising, I stumbled on a transcript on the thread that has one or two of the above, checking out this school doesn't make me lazy,it makes the process much more easier for me.

On the other hand,if you decide to hide the name of your school on your transcript simply because some Nairalanders are too lazy to search for schools themselves, you have no business coming here for help because everything you need is also on Google.

And lastly,if someone feels threatened and proceed to drag me I will not hesitate to do the same.

Bro, someone actually said, can't quote the individual verbatim, there is nothing wrong hiding your school and sharing only with a select few. By doing that you are giving others opportunity to find out stuff for themselves.

Buhahahhaa. That, my good fellow, is one of the most oversalted crap I have ever heard in my life. And to think someone actually believes this.

I mean, really? I can't even begin to try to unravel this rationale. This is just wrong!

You have the right to reveal or not. No qualms. What a lot of us are saying is see the other side of the narrative.

But to think you think hiding your school is helping others to be more hardworking. Lol, that's some raggedy ass superiority complex there. Ya not guru maraji na. Lol!

Assistantships alert ! For both fall 2021 and spring 2022

I mean if we are to go by the logic powering that false and uncritical narrative that name-dropping schools would drive Naija peeps like moss to flame to apply, would it not mean that open PhD adverts like this being posted here would draw the same lot of 'lazy Nigerians' in droves to apply.

Una still dey deceive onasef!

The way y'll descend to insults to prove what--you are better or sabi insult or are better placed in life? Una funny gan!

The funny thing is the OP (congratulations by the way) who gained admission for Law actually put her previous admissions and even funding details, but then hid the current one. That itself passes across a message that fleshes out the elephant in this room. But, to each their own.

Hide or don't hide. It is well with everybody. A lot of I, I, I, and me, me, me, and ego playing out here.

But honestly there is no pressure to even share your transcript in the first place is there?

Epithet:
I think the perspectives that have ensued in the discussion about posting school names on transcripts might have been one-sided(i.e how other people benefit from an OP declaring their school on a transcript). How about the benefit(s) an OP gets from posting their schools like alumni reaching out to them to give directives, or just other students presently in the program reaching out to create rapport that would ease the OP settling into the program.

I would give the simple illustration, a closed hand cannot give or receive. So I figured I would highlight the other perspective of how hiding your schools can also be detrimental to the OP in one way or the other. At the end to each their own.

Ps: If you're curious folks are being reached out to because they posted their schools and literally the correspondence is sometimes to their benefits nothing more, think of folks that offer airport pickups and recommendations on how to navigate programs.

God bless you for this perspective!

I’m not sure I understand what you’re trying to defend. Some people pay to get schools and also pay education consultants to help with the applications but they only need to see people’s experience at the embassy. This has nothing to do with school choice. Some spend months doing the research themselves why can’t others do the same. All this justifications AINT necessary. So do your own work and learn from people’s experience at the embassy here

I don't understand you. But yes sir/ma. Case closed.

I think the issue is the hasty generalization that whoever has not found what he/she is looking for, is not hardworking enough. If one is hardworking with the right information at their disposal, e dey be like vector quantity. Why should I bother about a lazy man, u can never mask laziness for so long, especially in graduate school, they will be found out.

Yo. Abi na. I mean if we are actually to go all the way with that rationale, there probably won't be any reason to post here or have this platform because everything that is needed to run this matter is online. And you can research it for yourself. And that makes any provided info quite unnecessary and could be hidden at the discretion of the poster.

After all, all the entries here are posts from people backed by the desire to share a part of their journey. Everyone can decide not to post transcripts. Or respond to any inquiry. Or post anything. Right?

In fact, Nigerians can tire you out with their reasoning sometimes.

I mean, I also think that it is quite bad to apply somewhere because others got in, but my reaction to that would be to encourage people not to do that. I wouldn't say people should not post their schools because others will want to apply there or not do their bit as required. Is that not a false messainic complex running undercurrent to and powering that thought: *indirectly* worried that people will get in because you got in, as if any part of your profile is the key--as if the school does not have it is vetting process.

I think if you flip it either ways, the chances of getting in a school without adequate prep is abysmal to start with. So, how is it a concern to hide school because others won't do the work. I feel when duly and critically appraised, people might not be hiding names of schools because of the laziness of others--however funny that even sounds.

It is usually something else.

PS: It is easy to say people can choose to hide their school, after all it is their school and their choice to do what they want with any part of their profile. But stand aside from that narrative for a second, and imagine everybody doing that to every part of their profile and journey; you won't have this platform at all. If you can't understand that, then there is no point in having this conversation.

This narrative of your prerogative is how people justify hiding anything from the collective.

There are different kind of people on this forum, there are people too lazy to search, there are people not lucky with d hardwork they have put in. If someone is too lazy, grad school is quite rigorous it will always come back to hunt him/her. That I drop name of my school doesn't mean it will suddenly become a proper fit for another. Schools give admission n funding based on the application put together. And I am not looking for school sir.

Abi na. I mean while we can agree that people take this too far by Just wanting names of schools to apply to--the truth is that that will only back fire, and should not even be anybody's worry if truly that is the reason people are hiding. I mean that is as crystal clear as anything. If you apply to as school without working your ass off for it, it will tell. And you will pay.

But concluding that people ask for name of schools to them needing those schools to apply or because they are lazy is a willingly blind argument and pretentious because you can't know that--you are not all-knowing. But then people rationalize different.

So, I have chosen to rest my case.

This is chockful of contradictions.

This more than fair. However, what folks are demanding aren't scoops, funding opportunities or vacancies. They are demanding for names of schools. Even if... the info you're asking for is publically available online to everyone. It isn't hidden.

This is silly. There is a reason the "block" feature exists. You can't threaten to harass someone because you're too lazy to do your own work.

Again, this all boils down to laziness or fear of approaching folks you don't know. Every University that admits international students has an International Student Office. It is their job to provide you this information. Part of your admission letter comes with an information pack that provides you all the information you need in terms of cost of living, what facilities (e.g. transportation, city sites, temporary or permanent housing, banking, etc.) are available to you. Some schools have someone to pick you up at the airport. Many of the questions asked here can be answered simply by speaking with your ISO or program coordinator.

So what is the point of your post?

You can be inspired by the story to do your own work... the name of the school isn't necessary.

Buhahahaha. Contradictions yeah. Lol. I heard you o, because apparently you have chosen to read my post the way you want.

One, you put it as if demanding for name of schools is exclusive to having access to the kind of opportunities that can count as scoops and vacancies, and what not. You can't even begin to unravel the many possibilities that can come with having that info--no one can.

Two, you say it is silly. I don't dispute that. Whether it is silly or not is not my point. In your haste to comment, you forget that I am merely stating a fact that that is inevitable. How you choose to respond to it is your own kettle of fish--which is not my point at all. And how you conclude by framing it this way ' threaten to harass' beats me. That just tries to push the discussion into another terrain entirely. But then, it is well.

Three, shaking my head. Of course the ISO provides all the information you need. But can you ever have too much information. And why can't you approach your country fellow for additional information, especially if the individual already resides there. Like, are you really saying that is needless, because I am reading your words and literarily shaking my head. I mean, many 'potential' schools provide all the information you need to apply and stuff, and yet people come here to ask for clarity pre- and post-application procedure. You can't even envisage the kind of question people need to ask, so chalking it up to only taking the advice of the ISO or that being enough is a mute point jare. I am sure you have given pieces of advice to people that would have been given by their schools. So, your point does not even fly at all. And attributing the need to reach out to country fellows to fearing or being lazy to reach out to other nationals is just a terrible argument. Hasty conclusion. And disappointing.

4. What is the point of my post because I said I (me o, which means it doesn't affect me) don't care if anybody hides. Lol. You sef.

5. Again, bro, you cannot prescribe what can inspire something for someone. You may be surprised that the name of the school will prompt a chain reaction. Come on, can you research all the schools in the US. Plus, while this might suggest encouraging laziness, the truth is sometimes, like an interview boiling down to a VO, sometimes choosing one school over the other is what determines an admission. And that is just the sad truth. And no one can put that part of the process to a science.

This is not a fight, and I tire of arguments. So, essentially, because I wouldn't want to drag this further, my point is yll should do what feels right to you, but consider the reason why you are hiding.

Shalom.

Let’s face it, it isn’t. It’s frankly lazy. The number of schools referenced here are only a tiny fraction of the number of schools available. I also think chastising people for exercising their right to not mention school programs they found through their own hard work is unfair bullying. Do your own work.

But this is not entirely true. Some people get scoops on PhD funding appointments or vacancies from adverts posted here. Imagine someone applying to a funded PhD program whose advert was shared on this platform, like many we have been seeing, gets in and then shares a transcript and hides those details...

Of course, no one owes anybody any explanation. Also, I understand very well how people can be lazy and expect you to do all the work for them--frankly speaking, hiding both school and program details will not stop that. They can find you anywhere and still bombard you with that. Heck, your close and distant friends and fam can/will do that to you once you leave--gbagbe you can't escape it. So, if it is about that, then I think that is 'quite' a defeated campaign.

I even feel the reason for hiding might be more of 'other reasons' than because you don't want people to ask you questions or follow your track, because that is just unavoidable. Now the real question is are you helping other people by hiding or by not hiding. That is a pros and cons that people should weigh--unless you don't care, in which case this does not apply to you.

For instance, not everybody checks out your transcript in the future or now to know where to apply. Some need contacts to make practical inquiries after getting admission to those 'schools'. Some of these are about accomodation, and other details on resettling that only someone living or studying in that environment can offer.

Some of these inquiries can even be years further down the line, after you have graduated. People search out posts on LinkedIn don't they, to reach out to students of particular schools. You might have even graduated. Sometimes using specific keywords helps make the process easier. At any point in time.

Now imagine if everyone hid the name of their schools. Imagine if everyone was like you. Just imagine na.

And the funny thing is people will put up these schools on LinkedIn right, and hide it here. Is that not funny.

And last but not the least, sometimes sharing these schools inspire others. Especially the top ones. Like a friend of mine once said, Nigerians will share the bad stories and then hide it when they hit it big. The danger in that is you are actively contributing to a narrative that hurts people down the line... A narrative of defeat. Imagine people no sharing transcripts at all. The myth of oh, us visa this, us visa that will remain rooted in our collective as it once was.

Of course no one can force you to hide or reveal your school. But ask yourself pertinent questions and then reconsider that choice.

Frankly, I don't care if you do or not. But at least let people be inspired by your story if it is inspiring.

Alternatively, you can drop your school and mute the program . Or if na fear, wait till you there and share your transcript.

But then, to each their own style.

PS: the use of you is a generic reference to those who fall into that category.

Transcript.

Visa Approved (May 20)

Lagos consulate.

VO: Good morning young man. How're you today?

Me: Good morning. I'm fine. How're you too?

VO: Fine, too. So tell me what are you going to the US for?

Me: I'm going for my Master's degree in Literary and Textual Studies program of the department of English, BGSU.

VO: (typing) You said architecture?

Me: (quickly cut in, and almost shouting at the top of my voice) I said Literary and Textual Studies. It's a concentration under the auspices of English. Literature part of English studies.

VO: (stopped typing) Alright. How many schools did you apply to?

Me: Two schools. Namely, NCSU and BGSU. Both offered me admission.

VO: So why BGSU?

Me: I chose BGSU because of its innovative English program blends both broad based literary courses with practical and flexible courses such as Technical and Professional Editing which for me are greatly responsive to the skill-demands of the present age and align with my own publishing career objectives. More so the opportunity to take additional graduate certificate in the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) is attractive to me. So those key considerations will allow me hone and improve my expertise in not just editing, but also in writing, research and pedagogy. (Through out this point, his eyes peered, almost were poring into my own eyes, obviously confirming my genuineness.)

VO: How did you know about BGSU?

Me: I got to know about it via Internet searches, especially USnews.com, having gone through and followed EducationUS posts about studies in US for a couple of months.

VO: What will this course do for you?

Me: It will avail me the opportunity of taking up a senior editorial role in a publishing firm *UPON MY RETURN TO NIGERIA*, as I'd have acquired the necessary skills and expertises as well as the graduate degree qualification the role required.

VO: I see you have full funding here, so who's gonna fund your trip?

Me: My uncle.

VO: What does he do?

Me: He's a thriving businessman and runs hotels in Ogun, Oyo and Lagos states. (The VO fixed his gaze intently at this point also, and I thought perhaps he needed clarification, so I chipped in, 'the hotels are five in number, two each in Ogun and Lagos and one in Oyo.)

VO: Fine. What do you currently do?

Me: I am a publishing editor at **** one of the leading literary publishing firms in Nigeria. (VO nodded)

VO: Are you like a writer also? (He obviously picked this from my Ds-160)

Me: Yes. I've published poems, short stories and various-type articles in journals, literary blogs and pages of newspapers.

VO: That's great. Think we're good here. I'd approve your visa. So I'd hold on to your passport. (Slid the famous white paper to me and literally droned on about things my overwhelming excitement didn't hear)..

NB: The interview wasn't as long as the transcript suggests. In fact it ended as soon as it had begun. I really do not have much advice to those that will soon go for their interviews; just want to say, make sure you tick your boxes very well, know and be sure about why and what you're going to study and it's not bad to check out what you filled in to your Ds-160. I had overheard another VO asking an interviewee why he contradicted what he wrote on the form he filled.

Good luck to everyone
.

Did you have any deficit . I know a few guys at that BGSU program with deficit.

Yes, it is possible to schedule an appointment before submitting you DS-160(although you must submit it 3 days before your interview). To do this, start filling a ds-160 form, save the little you’ve been able to fill and then use the number to schedule an appointment.

You can pick the earliest date you find in your preferred location of interview, then request for an emergency appointment(with your Sevis fee already paid), I believe your request will be granted and an earlier date will be opened for you.

Your location on the ds-160 and your appointment confirmation should be the same except in some other cases.

There is nothing wrong with paying for visa fee through mobile/online banking.

I thought that you can only schedule an emergency appointment within 60 days of one's school resumption date? Please help clarify this . Thanks .

I do not have dependents, neither am I married. Na only me and my God. I was just confused seeing people talking about showing proof of payment of all sorts even with full funding. I thought if I could show that I have the amount for round trip air fare and settling expenses in my account and add that to my funding offer that I should be good.

You should attach your statement of account even if you have only N50 inside. Since you have funding, your application will be straightforward. However, if you are married or have dependents in Nigeria, you have to show proof that they'll be taken care of in your absence and if they're going with you, you should provide additional proof that you can take care of them there.

Congrats on your admission though. I'm also going to Montreal for a funded PhD. Have you applied for your CAQ?

Good day everyone. I have been following this thread from its earliest pages. However, I need help with a particular question. I got a PhD admission @Concordia with funding that covers everything for all the duration of the program.

Please I need to know if I still need to submit proof of funding aside what the school is providing, and if so, how much am I looking at, since I wouldn't need to show proof of having tuition or living expenses (except for flight and settling expenses) since it is all covered by the school.

I need to know because I have been racking My head for where money will come from.
