Religion / A Review On First Published Igbo Qur'an - Koran Nso by DanZubair(m): 11:52pm On Jul 01, 2022
NSO KORAN

BEING FIRST IS NOT THE ISSUE
Sheikh Murtala Chukwuemeka launched his major work, the igbo translation of the Quran "NSO KORAN, today in Abuja. He was greeted with thundering applause for pioneering( emphasis mine) the work. The news trending was that he was the first to undertake and complete this gigantic project
However, hours after, Jafar Jafar published an article in his Facebook Page(Still on " Nso Kiran") where the credit for pioneering this kind of work was attributed to a Canada based Professor Jumbo Ugoji in 1984.
Pages of that extant copy were provided by the daughter of the author, Ngozi as proof of claim, and it was claimed that the Sheikh didn't I consult the author or any other authority in the field prior to launching his work, as nature of the work demands input from various sources ( which shouldn't diminish the fact that the principal author shall take credit).

My Take
It's possible for two different scholars to arrive at authentic translation if the Quran in a given language contemporaneously and independently with each ignorant of other efforts and the respective authors should take credit for their work which may not be similar. For example, prior to the publication of the complete version of Sheikh Gummi's version of Hausa translation, there exist at least two others ( incomplete of course), notably that of Sheikh Nasir Kabara Kano, but these lacked universal spread.

Also Arabic translations appeared at different times and with different interpretations and bear the names of the original authors to date. Same can be extrapolated to virtually all of the languages in which translations appeared and in which there's agreement. All one has to do in the circumstances, is to quote the author one is referencing , in English you have Yusuf Ali, Pickhtal etc.

This is true of all Nigerian languages where you had many dialects, with words having contrasting meanings and usages in full and context. Onitsha igbo is different from Abakaliki or Aba or Mbaise versions and to aim at a standardized version is an exercise in futility.

To me this claim of who is the first stands, but unlike Sheikh Murtala, Prof didn't take necessary steps to make his work widely available to igbo speaking audience. Both works are a work in progress, subject to review as time goes and as the language changes with infusion of English, Yoruba, Efik, calamari, pidgin and other languages. All that I can say is that may Allah reward them all!
Allah knows best

Crime / Sokoto: An Open Letter To President Buhari On Sabon Birni Killings by DanZubair(m): 4:30pm On Dec 08, 2021
Sokoto: An Open Letter to President Buhari on Sabon Birni killings

An Hausa group write to draw the attention of President Muhammadu Buhari on the issue of terrorist activies carried out by Bello Turji Gudde boys in eastern part of Sokoto State. As of recent, a bus carrying 42 passengers was set on fire by his gang of terrorists troubling the State. The incident reportedly took place on Monday, December 6, 2021 while the passengers were travelling from Sabon Birni local government area of the state.

AN OPEN LETTER TO YOUR EXCELLENCY, THE PRESIDENT AND COMMANDER IN CHIEF OF THE ARMED FORCES OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA

YOUR EXCELLENCY
We the concerned peace loving GOBIRAWAS WORLDWIDE UNDER THE AEGIS OF GOBIR DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION, felt scandalized, traumatized and demoralized by the constant butchering of our people without any provocation by the terrorist groups operating in around the axis of three local govenmants in Sokoto Eastern Senatorial Districts and one local Government in Zamfara State, continuous with us, namely, ISA, SABON BIRNI AND GORONYO, as well as SHINKAFI.
2. These communities are daily attacked and terrorists by these bandits, aka TURJI BOYS who operate with brazen impunity killing, maiming, conducting, raping and destroying our people and their means of livelihoods, for no apparent reason. Their impunity has became so callous and brazen to the extent of imposing themselves as rulers and expropriating anything they fancy from the people including but not limited to cash taxes, food supply, drugs and sometimes their maidens.
3. Your Excellency, we have earlier on written a similar complaint after a gory incident at Garki, a village five kilometres from Sabo Birni itself, where, over eighty people were gruesome murdered in cold blood in a single night. The City pictures of these murdered brothers and sisters trended in the internet and our letter was widely circulated( copy attached).
4. At that time we were so awe strike that we hardly had time to bury the dead when the murderous terrorists struck again in another village about ten kilometres from there, namely DAKWARO, followed in quick succession by GAJIT, LAJINGE, TARAH, UNGUWAR LALLE, KURAWA, GANGARA, GARIN IDI and virtually every village around the axis leaving behind in their trail blood, tears smoke, ashes and smouldered farmlands.
5. The terrorists continued their activities after a major military onslaught in Zamfara State, where they relocated en mass in grouos.
6. The response from security agencies, commendable as it is was inadequate as the terrorists always outnumber them, and in more than one occasion the troops were ambushed at UNGUWAR LALLE and in another incident, they run over a military base killing scores of them.
7. Since that incident the military in cooperation with sister security agencies had launched series of successful operations where several terrorists were eliminated and scores dispersed. What is disturbing is that in spite of all these efforts and sacrifices the activities of these murderous gangs became bolder and bolder by the day.
8. Latest in the series of atrocities include:-
I) attack on Gironyo Market in broad daylight where more than fifty were massacred,
ii) similar attacks at Unguwar lalle and Lajinge
iii) serial attacks on Tarah, Kurawa, Kalgo, Gangara and Gatawa and adjoining villages as far as Isa town
iv) attacks on Gatawa and Tarah where twenty one people were abducted and ransom paid in various sums
v) over running Gangara and Jijjira and removing village heads installing one of their own
vi) imposing of taxes on villages ranging from 2 to 6 million Naira
vii) Attacking of Illela where more than forty people perished
viii) the most recent was attack on travellers from Sabon Birni at Gidan Bawa where 37 of the passengers were burnt alive including the vehicles conveying them. This sordid and heart breaking incident happened at the wee hours of Monday, 6th December, 2021. Up to the time of writing this, we are still searching.
ix) as if the provocation isn't enough, they followed it up with abduction of passengers and others along the Shinkafi Isa road within hours.
9. Your Excellency, Sir, while recognizing the deadly nature of asymmetric warfare and the insufficient boots to comb all nooks and crannies of the affected areas, we also recognize the efforts made and is still being made, we wish to state clearly that this is an economic and social warfare being waged on our people to systematically destroy our economic base and reduce our numerical strength. As evidenced by:-
a) rustling of all livestock in the area
b) looting of all shops and sacking of major rural markets
d) sabotaging ging our farming activities through wilful grazing on crops, deliberate setting farms to fire, denial of passage to farms, occupation of our critical farming assets, blockage of harvests, imposition of arbitrary taxes beyond the ability of the people to pay and timing the payments when they had already stolen all economic assets, including food and livestock and cash, abducting able bodied men and youth and collecting ransom from relatives who sell of their assets in the process...
10. This terrorism persisted because:-
1) a large number of local informants, who were either forcefully inducted or out of fear or out of dire economic necessity
2. Forceful conscription of people into terrorist activities.
3. A large swaths of of ungoverned space
5. Poor accessibility of the areas and wide distance between them.
6. Inadequate boots on the ground.
7. Closure of telecom network, though desirable, it created unintended consequences which tend to work against people.
8. Poverty etc.
9. Your Excelency as responsible, law abiding and progressive citizens, we refrained ourselves from taking laws into our hands and report to constituted authorities, the response is in most cases, belated because the authorities were in themselves overwhelmed by the magnitude of criminality they had to contend with.
10. We believe that we had suffered enough and are praying your Excellency to consider the serious implications of these terrorist acts which are already threatening the corporate existence of the country and might spiral out of control if urgent actions against them are not taken.
11. We shall be grateful if you could order immediate deployment of security personnel and hardware against these terrorists and end their reign of impunity once and for all so that our markets, schools, hospitals, farms , highways and social life could once back to life and we continue contributing our quota to the socioeconomic development of our areas and country in general.
12. On our part, we promised to accord the security agencies all necessary assistance in discharging their patriotic duties.

We remain your patriotic and peace loving citizen.

Culture / The Reign And Death Of Last Hausa King Of Kano, Sarkin Kano Muhammadu Alwali II by DanZubair(m): 1:11pm On Oct 17, 2021
Muhammadu Alwali
Muhammadu Dan Yaji, known as Muhammadu Alwali II (died 1807) was the last king of the Kano kingdom. His reign coincided with a period of upheavals in Sudanic History that saw a series of wars waged by the Fula People. In 1807, after a protracted struggle with Fula clans, Muhammadu Alwali was ambushed and assassinated at Burum-Burum in modern day Kano. His death marked the end of the Kutumbawa line of Hausa aristocrats in Kano and the fall of the 800 plus year old Bagauda Dynasty.

Muhammadu Alwali was the son of Sarki Yaji II and Baiwa. In 1781 he succeeded his brother, Dauda Abasama to become the third successive son of Yaji II to ascend the throne of Kano.

Reign
The Kano kingdom was consistently at war to maintain hold of trade routes and his reign came at a time when famine was a regular occurrence. These factors coupled with increased taxation by the aristocracy saw dwindling fortunes for the kingdom. Traders were abandoning the state for more favorable conditions in the Sahel. When Alwali became King, he immediately collected grains of sorghum and millet to prepare for war and famine. However, a famine devastated the city soon after.

Dirki
Dirki was a fetish object that was held sacred in Kano. It was made of a Quran covered in multiple layers of goat skin or cow hide introduced around the 16th century in the reign of Muhammadu Zaki. Alwali was asked to provide forty cows as a sacrifice to Dirki but he refused. He went as far as attacking the object with an axe and exposing its contents. The people then murmured that he will be expelled from Kano just as he as expelled the Quran from Dirki.

Ciroma Dan Mama
Over time, the Kano royal family had been divided into multiple factions. Since the first civil war in 1565, internal strife had ravaged the Kano royal house. A second civil war broke out after El Kutumbi’s death in 1648.
Alwali’s father Yaji, endured a bitter relationship with his brother, the then Sarki Muhammadu Sharefa and his sons who succeeded him. Yaji was exiled to a desolate life of penury. During this time, he heavily relied on a local farmer and tobacco seller from Katagum. When Yaji ascended the throne after the death of Alhaji Kabe, he adopted this figure as his son and gave him the prestigious title of Ciroma (Crown Prince), and entrusted the resources needed for the ascension of his sons in his hands. It is believed that this figure or his son, called Dan Mama was stripped of the title of Ciroma during Alwali’s reign who instead gave the title to his son. The deposed Ciroma, though scorned, continued to play a role in the Sultan’s court and would later play a pivotal role in his downfall. Tradition relates that his treachery sealed Alwali’s fate.

War with the Fula

Background
Alwali was already facing a struggle in securing his throne and the ascension of his son against the faction loyal to the lineage of his uncle Muhammadu Sharefa and another faction that contained the remnants of the Rumfawa in Kano. Unbeknownst to him, a more serious threat was looming. When Shehu Usman Dan Fodio’s war began in Gobir, he sent a letter to all Hausa Kings who had already sworn to support the King of Gobir. It is related that Muhammad Alwali was on the verge of accepting the Shehu’s message when he was dissuaded by Ciroma Dan Mama. The Ciroma is said to have then written to the Shehu offering his support in exchange for a hundred towns. Kano was home to a number of Fula clans who had begun settling since the 14th century including the Jobawa, Sullubawa, Danejawa, Yolawa, Yerimawa, Modibawa, Gyanawa, Zarawa, Toronkawa, Mundubawa, and Dambazawa. Many Fula chiefs had assumed various powerful titles in Kano, including the leadership of various towns. The Kutumbawa Kings had alienated themselves from their masses through their heavy taxation and open syncreticisms and the Fula also found allies in Hausa muslims and aggrieved peasants in Kano, led by Alkali Mallam Usman. These Hausas according to WF Gowers may have been just as many as the Fula. Muhammadu Bakatsine, the leader of the Jobawa, who were one of the most established Fula clans in Kano, had been with Dan Fodio in Gobir but returned to Kano after the Fulas defeat by Gobir at Tsuntua. The Shehu soon sent a letter to his supporters in Kano after which they withdrew from their communities and assembled in preparation for war.

Early Encounters
A group of the Shehu’s followers made for Kwazzazabo where they frightened the villagers and seized their grains and in the ensuing scuffle slew one of the farmers who had refused them access to his stock of grains. The Sarkin Bebeji immediately alerted Sarki Alwali who was then situated at the newly reinforced Takai. The King in trying to assess the situation sent a small force led by Gainaku and instructed him to burn the Fula compounds and seize whatever he pleased from them. Gainaku though succeeding in killing some of the fula was forced to retreat. Alwali then sent for Muhammad Bakatsine and accused him of treachery. The clan leader however denied any involvement and swore his innocence on a Quran but on his way back proceeded to seize the town of Gogel.
After consultation with his advisers, Alwali who still underestimated the severity of his situation then sent a military general, Barde Bakori with a force he deemed sufficient to disband the rebels but was also turned back. When the Barde returned to Alwali who had at that point left Takai and returned to Kano, the King faced different opinions from his advisers with one faction calling for a declaration of war and the other faction seeking a more diplomatic approach. The King had initially wanted to accept the Shehu’s call and he opted for the latter view. He put together a delegation which included Arab and local scholars who were granted an audience by the rebels but publicly humiliated and turned back. One of the delegates was said to have died of fright shortly after returning to Kano.

Kano’s First Assault
After rejecting his offer for peace, Alwali and his advisers decided to summon a faction of his troops led by the Sarkin Dawaki Ali and ordered them to capture the Fula leaders and women but to slay everyone else. Before they got to the Fula stronghold in Kwazzazabo, the rebels had already shored up their defenses while their leaders had withdrawn to Kogo in anticipation. When the Sarkin Dawaki and his troops broke initial resistance and made it into the Fula settlement, he instructed the Barde to set their huts on fire but the Barde insisted that they had to collect the Shehus flag first. This hesitation proved costly; As soon as the Barde collected the flag, he was greeted by a hoard of Fula warriors and even women. The Hausa horses were spooked by the pandemonium and in their retreat, the cavalry was confined to a narrow space due to trenches built by the Fula and were chased by a rain of arrows and spears. A lot of their soldiers fell off their horses and lost their lives, the Sarkin Dawaki barely escaped. The Fula gained horses, muskets, coats of mail, armors, swords, quilted armors, and many other weapons.

Expansion of the war
In the wake of the Fula victory against the Sarkin Dawaki, Sarkin Fulanin Dambarta, Malam Maiyaki, also known as Dan Tunku, who later founded the Kazaure Emirate switched his allegiance from Alwali to the Shehu. Alwali did not learn of this perfidy until it was too late. The Fula now also had the confidence and firepower to move across Kano. They soon made for the town of Godiya but were repelled with many losses by Dan Tama, the ancestral ruler of Godiya. They eventually broke their defenses and burnt the city to the ground and neighboring towns submitted to avoid the same fate. During their expeditions, they also pillaged Fula herders who wouldn’t join their struggle. They then took Karaye after a small resistance but immediately saw an army led by the Dan Tama of Godiya and Barde Bakori. Neither side expected to encounter the other. The Dan Tama and Barde attacked nonetheless but the Fula had taken up strong positions around the river bed and repelled their attackers. Karaye was the first major town to fall to the Fula. While in Karaye, Mallam Musa arrived and was given the Flag for the wad against Zazzau after which he proceeded to his destination. In order to use their superior mobility and field knowledge, as well as to avoid the possibility of facing the combined forces of Kano, Katsina, and Daura, the Fula dispersed their armies to force Alwali to do the same. They soon converged near Tofa and were promptly attacked by a small Hausa force from Tatarawa and Damargu which they repelled and captured many horses from. The Fula captured Tofa, Bichi and then Tatarawa.

Enlisting of Tuaregs
Alwali decided to acquire the services of the Tuaregs of Adar led by Tambari Agumbil who had experience fighting against the Fula in Gobir. Agumbil received the handsome sum of four million cowries to come into Alwali’s service. Agumbil’s forces were strengthened by a band of Hausa warriors with whom he attacked the Fula at Tatarawa. Their attack sent the Fula to flight but they soon retaliated with a flurry of arrows aimed at the Hausa wing and Agumbil came to their aid, immediately losing his life in the process. His forces were in disarray and a massacre ensued. They followed the retreating forces to Tomas and collected prisoners and booty.

Successes
The King decided to change his tactic. He reinforced his experienced soldiers and directed them to engage in minor assaults but to avoid open battles, hoping that attrition would wear the rebels out. His new strategy yielded positive results and afforded the Hausa army the time to regroup. The King then sent out raiders as a decoy to fool the rebels and in the resulting battle, the Fula lost many soldiers and were forced to retreat. The Fula then proceeded to take Madaci and Jalli but lost Malam Dan Zabuwa in the process.

The Battle of Dan Yaya
After Madaci and Jalli fell, the King himself set out of Kano with a large force which included a heavy cavalry of seven hundred horsemen. He soon took and razed Dawaki which was situated between Madaci and Jalli. His army then occupied the town but were subject to constant harassment by a concentrated force of rebels using arrows and guerrilla tactics, trying to draw his cavalry out to open field.
It was here that Alwali learned of his betrayal by Ciroma Dan Mama and Sarkin Fulanin Danbarta who both reinforced Fula forces. The Ciroma’s forces would account for a significant portion of Kano’s army. Alwali proceeded to Dan Yaya and while reinforcements from Bornu were impeded by a Fula blockade, he welcomed the Kings of Katsina and Daura and their armies. The Fula were however further reinforced by their kin from Ringim, Jahun and other areas.
At Dan Yaya, three to four months of fighting took place and it is said that up to ninety three fights took place within this period. The King however did not fully commit his army until the last three days. It is possible he was waiting for further reinforcements from Daura, Katsina, Bornu and other placers but this did not materialize.
Alwali then took to the battlefield himself and launched a heavy attack on the rebel stronghold in Sabon Ruwa and many houses were burnt. However, the rebels were soon reinforced by their allies in neighboring areas. Alwali was then pushed back from Sabon Ruwa with both sides recording heavy losses. The Kings army attacked again in the evening and more reinforcements came to Alwalis aid from Daura. Kano forces launched a less intense attack in the morning. During this time, the Fula camp was running short of supplies and contemplated retreating to Gaya to instead aid Muhammad Bakatsine who had so far been unable to capture what would be perhaps the most important town in Kano. They argued against this retreat believing it would reinvigorate the King and his army’s morale, instead deciding to roll the dice on one last major attack. The Fula came out in the open field and the Kings army immediately charged. The battle started from Maghrib prayers (around 7:00PM) until Subhi Prayers (around 5:00AM) when the Fula were able to stealthily set fire to the Hausa camp which contained their women and supplies. On seeing this, the Hausa retreated towards their tents and the battle soon became a slaughter in favor of the Fula.

As the fire razed through their bivouacs, Alwali fled for Kano with his sons and other officials. The Kings of Katsina and Daura also fled home with what was left of their armies while the remaining soldiers fought a losing battle against the rampaging rebels. The Fula took most of Kano soon after.

Fall of Kano and Exile to Zazzau
After his crushing defeat at Dan Yaya, Alwali reviewed his situation with his advisors and clerics. He once again sent another delegation to the rebels, agreeing to surrender to their demands while remaining in office as a tributary. His offer was rejected and was told that dialogue was not an option and that they would attack Kano on the 12th of Rabi’ al-awwal. He fled Kano for Zazzau forty days before the due date.

Last Stand
While the Kano Chronicle suggests he was immediately turned out of Zazzau, it is widely accepted that he stayed in Zazzau for a few months. During this time, Gaya, which was ruled by the lineage of Alwali’s grandmother resisted the forces of Muhammad Bakatsine and remained loyal to the King. This inspired Alwali to make one last stand. He ordered Sarkin Gaya Gujabu to launch an attack on Muhammad Bakatsine who had moved and assembled a force at Wudil. Gujabu was defeated with heavy losses. Gaya was soon overrun by the forces of Muhammad Bakatsine and Gujabu was slain. Meanwhile, Alwali had already left Zazzau for Burum-Burum which was led by his relative Wambai Tagwai when he learnt of Gaya’s fall. The Fula soon assembled a heavy force led by Muhammad Bakatsine and launched a relentless attack on Burum-Burum.

Death
Burum-Burum withstood the Fula onslaught for several weeks but eventually succumbed to the unabated assault. While the Kings son Umaru escaped, Alwali lost his life in the clash that ensued. His death signaled the end of the Kutumbawa and the fall of a dynasty that according to the Kano Chronicle trace their lineage to Bayajidda.

Aftermath
After the King’s death, and with no leader to rally behind, the rest of Kano submitted. Alwali’s son Umaru fled towards Damagaram where he met the ousted Kings of Katsina and Daura. The King of Katsina would establish a kingdom in Maradi where his descendants use the title of “Sarkin Katsina” and that of Alwali use “Sarkin Kano”. A descendant of the King of Daura was reinstated as the King of Daura by the British in 1904.

After a few months, Dan Fodio appointed Suleiman Abahama as the first Fula King of Kano, subject to the Sokoto Kingdom. The Fula leaders of the war soon assumed various titles. Alkali Usman who led the initial Hausa supporters of the war though receiving much respect did not gain much status or power. His faction were dubbed as “Hausawa”.

Ciroma Dan Mama would receive his one hundred towns of mostly hamlets. Him and his Hausa followers were dubbed as “Kutumbawa”. Later on when the affairs of Kano became difficult to administer for the Fula kings, Ciroma Dan Mama helped acquaint them with the Hausa administrative system and practices. The rest of the people of Kano were characterized by the pejorative term “Habe” by the new royal house and subject to grating conditions.

Hausa resistance would continue through erratic raids by Ningi which came under muslim Hausa scholars led by Malam Hamza who opposed the discriminatory practices of the Fula Kings against the Habe, Maradi which became the new home of the deposed Hausa aristocracy, and the Kingdom of Damagaram. The latter, under Ahmadu Kuran Daga (Maje Rinji) gathered a formidable arsenal of thousands of locally manufactured canons and muskets and was on the verge of taking the Kano capital after sending the Kings forces into retreat when an illness and news of a French invasion sent him racing back home but not before collecting a great haul of booty from Kano. The Fula King at the time, Aliyu Babba, had paid 30 million cowries for intensive prayers and it was believed these prayers were why Rinji’s assault seized....

Crime / Yauri abduction: Kebbi Governor set To Lead Hunters, Vigilantes To Battlefield by DanZubair(m): 11:44pm On Jun 19, 2021
Kebbi State Governor, Atiku Bagudu, has vowed to lead local hunters and vigilantes to battlefield against bandits and to defend the territory of state against frequent attacks.

The governor stated this on Saturday in Birnin Kebbi while addressing hundreds of local hunter and vigilante groups from different parts of the state who stormed the state capital to declare their readiness to wage war against bandits.

Bagudu, in an emotional laden- voice, told the hunters that he and other governors were ready to be on the battlefield to defend the lives of the people, their properties and territories of the nation.

“We are not military yet and we are not police.

“We commend and respect what the security agencies are doing and they are doing a great job; but security agents are human beings.

“They also want the community’s support; they want the support from the vigilantes.

“So if we can go to electioneering campaign rallies and gather 100,000 people, what has taken place in Birnin Yauri, should be the last strike.

“We should follow these bandits wherever they are and kill them all.

“And I call on all my colleagues in other states too to do same.

“How many are they (bandits)?

“How many of us can they kill?

“So,we will discuss with the security agencies, so that we don’t interfere with the commendable jobs they are doing.

“But, we will go out there, like I promised you, on the day we move out, I will not be in office; I will join you in the field.

“And I am sure other governors will be leading their people so that we can all meet in the fields.

“It is not the weapons that win the war, it is the will of the people.

“Bad people cannot tramp upon the will of good people, and we would show them that we have the will power,” he charged.

Bagudu also commended President Muhammadu Buhari and security agencies for doing their best with limited resources, stressing the need for the people to mobilise themselves and take on the bandits.

“Yes, we are afraid of death; nobody wants to die, but Who will not die?

“We are afraid not to be hurt but who will not be hurt? Which one is more tragic, to die like a coward?

“I think that should be the greatest fear or to die without faith?

“Because, as the people of faiths, we know that our Scriptures, both Christians’ and Muslims, especially Muslim, Islam teaches us to put our lives at risk in defending our honours, or our properties or our faith.

“In all what these bandits are doing to us, they have challenged our faiths, our properties and our honour and we can’t allow them to go...

Crime / Zamfara Killings A Genocidal Attack Against Indigenous Hausas – HURIWA by DanZubair(m): 1:55pm On Jun 15, 2021
The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA has said that the recent attacks in Zamfara Communities by suspected Fulani bandits could be aimed at erasing the Hausa extraction. HausaToday recalls that armed bandits a few days ago stormed some communities in Zamfara State and killed over ninety (90) residents.

But the Rights Writers in a reactionary statement issued on Monday by Emmanuel Onwubiko, its national Coordinator and the National Media Affairs Director Miss Zainab Yusuf urged President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently declare the bandits as terrorists.

The statement alleged that expressing shock over the incessant attacks on communities would make no changes in the security situation in Zamfara State.

HURIWA also slammed the Nigerian lawmakers for keeping mum over the current state of the nation.

“The Senate President has become like a ‘pet dog’ of the executive arm of government and has abandoned his watchdog role ascribed to the National legislature by the Grundnorm.

“Sadly, the Speaker has also become a stooge of President Muhammadu Buhari who is totally disconnected from the constant ordeals confronting millions of Nigerians just as the cocktails of killings by organised criminal gangs do not disturb or worry their consciences.

“Now amidst the cacophony of violence and killings carried out and orchestrated by armed non-state actors, the National Assembly has gone on recess and are not bothered about the bad existential situations in all parts of the Federal Republic of Nigeria “.

Culture / The Hausa Plaintive Cry On Recovering Their Lost Kingdoms – Dauda Gora by DanZubair(m): 5:01pm On Jun 05, 2021
Nigerians, 50 years old and above who attended Primary School in any part of what used to be Northern Nigeria, must have been taught during History lessons about the 7 Hausa States of Biram, Kano, Katsina, Daura, Gobir, Rano and Zaria as well as the seven (7) Banza Bakwai Kingdoms of Zamfara, Kabi, Yauri, Gwari, Nupe, Kwararafa (Jukun) and Yoruba.

These Kingdoms were viable in virtually every aspect of human endeavour at that time. I should draw the readers attention to the meaning of the Hausa word ”Banza”. Banza, is a derogatory word which means worthless or anything that is of lower quality which clearly showed a marked distinction between the Hausa Bakwai and the Banza Bakwai Kingdoms.

There may have been the pastoral or nomadic Fulani as part of the population in these Kingdoms but not much if anything was recorded in this respect. The Fulani got a mention when migrants from the general area of the Futa Djalon foothills and the SeneGambia region in West Africa arrived Gobir not long before 1800.

Usman Dan Fodio who masqueraded as an Islamic teacher had issues with the leadership in Gobir, the reason he adduced being that a corrupt form of Islam was being practiced and he raised a band of followers that succeeded in violently overthrowing the leadership in Gobir under the guise of purifying Islam.

Instead of replacing the old leadership with indigenes of Gobir he appointed his own Fulani as the new leader and proceeded from there to wage what was erroneously called a Jihad or holy war. Wherever he put under, he appointed either his son or trusted Fulani as Emir thus silencing the Hausa who held power previously. He and his followers even conceived the dream of ditching the Quran in the Atlantic ocean meaning that their mission was to Islamize all the ethnic groups along their path up to the Atlantic Ocean.

Unluckily for them, they came face to face with the realities of gun powder along the general line of Agbede a village south of Auchi and the Kukuruku range of hills running westward. From there the jihadists advance southward was blunted as they were forced to withdraw backward. In other words, they beat a retreat.

As time went on, an advanced form of the Stockholm syndrome may have had its place as the indigenous Hausa began to see the Fulani occupiers and usurpers of their lands as friends and were content with the crumbs that fell from the Fulani dinner tables.

When Karl Marx described RELIGION as the opium of the masses we have to believe within the context of this short essay that he meant much more than the intoxicating effect of the drug. He may also have been referring to the blinding and numbing properties too, otherwise how and why did a foreign invader succeed so easily in steamrolling over all the Kingdoms in Hausa land in less than 2 years ?

It is very obvious that a local form of Fulani apartheid was at play here otherwise having taken over the Kingdoms under the guise of purifying Islam why did they usurp the political arrangement which existed prior?

In all of this the Hausa people must hold themselves to blame for having collapsed like a pack of cards and in many instances, without a single shot being fired?

Had they resisted the political coup against their leadership the story could have been different today but like sheep to the slaughter they were deceived and blindfolded into the make believe that Dan Fodio did come to purify and clean up Islam. Oh, how wrong they were and still are.

The consequences of that terrible blunder over two centuries ago is what Nigeria as a nation is still struggling to deal with.

To acquire legitimacy the Fulani came up with the coinage, Hausa-Fulani again to further blindfold the Hausa population. Everything that was good at that time went to the Fulani causing the Hausa to develop a sense of inferiority complex. Hausa women were taken and are still being forced into marriages by the invaders as the Emirate system took roots.

When eventually the British colonialists came around they found it very convenient not to undo the Emirate system as it served her mercantilist interests. This gave the Fulani the opportunity to further cement and concretize their political as well as social and economic agenda over the Hausa.

The Hausa, their culture, history and tradition began to recede into irrelevance as the invading Fulani easily foisted their own values, tradition and culture over all that remained of the Hausa Kingdoms.

It must be noted though that not all of the Hausa speaking population accepted Islam. Many rejected the faith preferring to continue with their traditional religion and culture. Those who rejected Islam were derogatorily called Maguzawa for the simple reason that they rejected Islam. These original Hausa speaking people still occupy large swaths of land in many States in the North, not limited to the old and now extinct Hausa Kingdoms.

As punishment for rejecting Islam the Hausa over the ages have been subjected to wholesale neglect and deprivation. Government policies and projects like Schools, Hospitals, Justice and Roads have been denied them. To date, the hybrid Fulani are still treating the Hausa as if they are the booty of war. Hausa young women are serialy kidnapped and forced into marriages against their will. They have no access to justice as any protestation with regard to forced marriages and land seizures are usually summarily dismissed in the courts.

The Hausa have suffered untold hardship under the terrible, rapacious and corrupt feudal system forcing many to find refuge under the comforting arms of the Christian faith. It is under this arrangement that development is beginning to filter through by way of Schools and Medical care.

Politically, care has been taken to ensuring that the Hausa can only vote but can hardly be voted for in their own land. The fate of the original Hausa speaking people of the old Hausa Kingdoms is not any different from that which the Red Indians suffered in what is now the United States of America except that in the United States steps are being taken to reach out and to rehabilitate the Red Indians.

Can similar steps be taken in today’s Nigeria for the Hausa?

Surely a Historical wrong can be righted so that the Hausa can recover their place in History. The blood letting that has been going on in Zamfara and other States in the northern fringes appears to be a continuation of the political jihad by other means. The current state of insecurity all over Nigeria but particularly in the Northern States would appear to be the last phase of the Fulani political jihad.

Whilst the hapless population in Southern Kaduna, the lower Plateau, Benue and other State were ongoing, the Presidency was not concerned but when a governor gave a quit notice to so-called Fulani herders illegally occupying a Forest Reserve in his State the Presidency was up in arms at the instance of Miyetti Allah pontificating that Fulani have the right to settle wherever they so wish within the territory of Nigeria.

Surely, the Fulani must be operating under a hybrid 1999 Constitution which is why they are flaunting themselves all over the place. The Nigeria Police is quick in arresting Sunday Igboho for being a threat to Fulani interest in Oyo State but the same Police have been so lethargic in arresting the Fulani terrorist jihadist responsible for mass murder in Zangon Kataf LGA. This is justice the Nigerian style.

Since Usman Dan Fodio’s foray into Hausaland early in the 19th Century life has never been the same for the Hausa speaking population then and even now. The social, political and economic conditions of the Hausa took a turn for the worse especially during the British colonialist enterprise and up to independence in 1960 when the Colonial masters handed Nigeria to the Fulani wholesale.

At independence, Nigeria held some beautiful promises of growth and progress but because those who inherited Nigeria after the British departure were inept in many ways, especially under Fulani hegemony the new nation very quickly became stunted.

The Fulani through the period of military dictatorship worked from below the surface to ensure that with the influence of their Emirs that the best of everything was reserved for them and their apologists. The Military either advertently or inadvertently simply became errand boys of the powerful Fulani Emirs. At every stage of State Creation the North had the preponderance of States in the so-called Federation. At the Federal level juicy appointments were reserved for Fulani people and so overtime, they have gotten to become very powerful in Nigeria while the Hausa whose lands had been taken over became onlookers.

Prompting this essay is an audio message by an extremely courageous Hausa speaking lady which has gone viral on Social Media in which she was lamenting the plight of the Hausa people even under the brutish Fulani ruling class.

That it is a woman and not a man who is taking up this fight against the injustice that is being meted to the Hausa people is simply wonderful. The lady in the audio has heaped all the blame for the plight of the Hausa on the occupying Fulani especially under the Buhari junta then and now. Usman Dan Fodio’s politically minded jihad may have gotten stunted in 1804 but clearly as current events are now evincing, the Fulani have not given up on continuing with that age long dream of completely taking over the whole territory called Nigeria. In this endeavour there appears a modern day Usman Dan Fodio in the president of the nation.

The strategy for achieving this grand objective has been throwing open our porous borders to imported Fulani jihadist terrorists from the Sahelian North of Africa many of who were mercenaries in Libya before the fall of Muammar Gaddafi. These terrorist groups simply moved into Nigeria under the guise of being pastoralists or herders and have brought with them death and destruction of lives and property.

The Nigerian State watched the unfolding events probably with amusement. Because it is an Islamist agenda being executed, no counter action was taken. That a modern State in the 21st Century can still be making a case for nomadic Fulani and open grazing is as laughable as it is shameful.

I will continue referencing the Grazing Reserve and Ruga Bill in the National Assembly as the ploy the PMB regime had wanted to deploy for a subtle yet complete takeover of the entire territory called Nigeria.

Today, Fulani either as herders or terrorists are everywhere in the territory of Nigeria, flaunting themselves and the sophisticated arms being smuggled across the borders in the North.

What if one may ask, are Fulani herders doing in the forest areas, but particularly in the Reserves of Southern and Eastern Nigeria ?
By whose authority are the Fulani forcefully occupying lands across the nation without even consulting the local communities?

The present government has on purpose turned deaf ears to the highly incendiary and combustible language of Miyetyi Allah. From all available audio and video recordings as well as press briefings, Miyetti Allah qualifies as a terrorist organization.

While there is no secret as to it’s leadership, no action has been taken by the national security architecture to have them explain some of their utterances.

Many dissatisfied parts of this beleaguered nation are in ebullition and unless a more suitable political arrangement is agreed upon and soon, Nigeria as presently constituted may be living on borrowed time.

The current leadership can choose not to learn from history by dismissing what happened in the former USSR, former Yugoslavia, Indonesia and Ethiopia at her own peril.

If the Fulani, their sponsors and apologists continue to toy with the unity of this nation, they will soon find out too late that they have committed a terrible blunder.

To God Be The Glory.

GBOLAGBURUGBURU:
What do you think is the most famous masculine and feminine name in your ethnic group. Or other ethnic group if you may.

Well I'm Igbo so I think
Emeka for males
Chioma or Chidinma for female.

Then if I am permitted for Yorubas I think Femi and Funke.

Whilst Hausa I am guessing Musa.

TAMBUWAL AT 55!
Fifty five years ago
A child was born solo

Into an aristocratic family
Full of nobility and erudition

Aminu according to the tradition

We’ve gifted Nigeria Aminu
A trusted servant of the nation

Everyone clapped and chorused

Their use of the word is for political reason as usual, unknown to many.

Crime / Group Send An Open Letter To President Buhari, Sultan Abubakar Over Killings by DanZubair(m): 11:26pm On May 23, 2020
A branch of Gobir Hausas group, Gobir Development Association (GDA) Sabon Birni, has written to draw the attention of Federal Republic of Nigeria, Government of Sokoto State, the Council of Sokoto Sultante, over the persistent killing and maiming of their sons and daughters by bandits believed to be Fulani in Sokoto East district. Below is content of the letter:

AN OPEN LETTER TO MR PRESIDENT, FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA

GOBIR DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION
C/O DISTRIC HEAD’S OFFICE
SABON BIRNI
SOKOTO STATE

23RD may, 2020
Your Excellency,
President Muhammadu Buhari,
The president of the Federal republic of Nigeria,
Aso Rock Villa,
Abuja.
Your Excellency,
APPEAL FOR URGENT DEPLOYMENT OF SOLDIERS TO TACKLE BANDITS IN SABON BIRNI AND ISA LOCAL GOVENMENTS IN SOKOTO STATE
We the over traumatized and fear stricken people of Sabon Birni and Isa Local Governments in Sokoto East Senatorial District, with a heavy heart, humbly wish to seek your intervention in resolving the intractable banditry situation in our area, that has made living a nightmare and peace elusive for over three years now.
2. Since about 2017, when intermittent bandit attacks on our villages bordering Niger republic began to manifest, we have never known peace, we have in fact learned to live with the banditry situation and always sleeping with one eye open. Until very recently, the escalation of the attacks on our people had reached an intolerable level, virtually all villages have been attacked at one time or another, especially since the run up to 2019 General Elections.
3. What started off like a child’s play has degenerated into a big monster threatening our very existence as a people, as now, hardly a day passed without a village or two been attacked by bandits believed to be of Fulani stock; whereby our people are being slaughtered like chickens, our able bodied youth beaten up, maimed or both, our women being abducted or raped.
4. Your Excellency, Sir, to summarize the situation, from about January 2019 to date, more than fifty (50) communities have been attacked, more than seven thousand heads of cattle (7000), 13,000 sheep and goats, 1,800 houses, sixteen (16) markets have been lost to the bandits. In addition, an estimated 250 person have either been kidnapped or missing or both with more than fifty killed.
5. Your Excellency, the bandits are still serially attacking our villagers as we write Kurawa and Garin Faji were attacked only last night, the Kurawa people came out en masse and repelled the attackers, but the other village was mercilessly ransacked and one person abducted as well as broad daylight road block and attacks on villages of Gajit and Dakwaro, a village head killed and many wounded (23/52020). Sometimes the attacks were in broad daylight or an overnight operations. House to house checks were made lasting several hours where raw cash, livestock and motorcycles eventually carted away. They were heavily armed and come in convoys of an average of fifty motorcycles with each carrying at least two of them. They also graze their livestock on our farmlands at gun point.
6. Your Excellency, to compound our plight distress calls to the Military and police stationed in both Local Governments were not responded to in good time despite good mobility at their disposal. When they eventually come, it was usually long after the miscreants had left, they were also reluctant to follow the trail of the criminals or effect arrests. Of the few arrests made, usually by the vigilantes, none to the best of our knowledge has ever been brought to book. We believe that the security forces are deliberately aiding and abetting the bandits for reasons best known to them.
7. Sir, we have been following similar issues in Katsina State and the recent directive you have issued for flushing of the bandits out of the state. We strongly felt abandoned by not being included as our areas are contiguous and the bandits could easily relocate to our are in the event of military action, thus, exacerbating the already precarious peace situation in the area.
8. We as law abiding citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, request that you as a matter of urgency, re-issue that order to include Sabon Birni - Isa- Shinkafi- Gundumi axis along the borders of Niger Republic and to ensure that the troops assigned for the job are accountable for their actions.
9. A detailed situation report is attached to this letter for your information, Sir.
10. With a heavy heart Sir, we hope and believe that you would use all means necessary to bring lasting peace to our areas. We are largely farmers and rearers and farming season is at doorstep, the continued attacks and fears instilled in the minds of our farmers will definitely deter them from farming with serious implications for food security and wellbeing of not only our people, but the entire Sokoto State.

Your Peace Loving and loyal Citizen;
