Edwardhead:According to Dictionary.com, both terms are correct. They are in fact synonyms. They both mean “a participant in any celebration.” One can be used for the other, and it would mean the same thing. However, celebrant also connotes “the officiating priest in the celebration of the Eucharist.” Methinks this connotation is what prompted well-meaning English professors and word mavens in Nigeria to preach that the correct term is celebrator. Well, it may be the more correct term as far as nuance is concerned, but its sound grates the ears of ordinary citizens in Nigeria who are not used to hearing it, let alone using it. That being the case, my advice is for you to use the more common word “celebrant.” It is still correct usage, and it is soothing to the ears of audiences in Nigeria. The best option, however, is to avoid both words. If you ask native English speakers, celebrant and celebrator are formal words. Their use can be awkward in non-formal occasions like in a birthday party. So that you won’t split hair and get a headache deciding which usage is more appropriate, follow my example. Use “birthday boy” or “birthday girl” instead of “celebrant” or “celebrator“. Say, “Let’s all clap our hands for the birthday boy,” instead of saying “Let’s all clap our hands for the birthday celebrator.” The first proposition to clap sounds soothing to the ears; the second does not. |
Evina:I sense sarcasm but the title on the FP does have 'Nigerian a Lady' in it... ![]() |

Afam4eva: Which crowd? Should we even be praying for a massive turnout?Ask them ooo... Which crowd indeed! Shouldn't they be hoping for a big crowd? If 100 people come attend, na 2000 pounds dey done make...half a million naira. Who wouldn't want a big crowd! |
Well this front page "advert" ain't gonna pay for itself. *Rolls eyes* ... Maybe I'll just go to my village, that'll be free! Yams free too, masquerades seen through your peep curtains if you are too chicken to come out. Various umuada cooking free food. Hmmmmm ...Which one should I choose! ![]() |
Did I hear my name? I'm right here?! Why don't you get the person to register on nairaland so that he/she can follow the various threads on nysc and also ask me directly whatever they wish to ask. Just finished camp myself and will be happy to answer any questions you have. 1stly...your friend needs to gather info from the nysc website. Don't bother writing emails or calling them cos they are a total waste of time, effort and space lmao! What course did your friend study? Cos it ll make a diff in the requirements. Also whatever info I give, pls feel free to verify on the nysc website (the website should be ur first port of call sha and then if u don't understand anything u can ask me). Nysc has recently changed and is still changing their rules which will start affecting batch c onwards so it might affect batch a 2015 too (like collecting call up letters online ...don't know if this will be diff for foreign grads.).. I digress... Don't mind me jooor!!! olashas: Hi guys |
So good to be back. We all definitely went ghost mode cos that camping no be beans sha...it was a tough experience (cried after 3 days on camp...lol) but extremely rewarding and I didn't even want to leave on the last day. Facilities was OK...cos I ve heard of worse in other camps. Running water, working showers, flush able toilets, constant electricity (with or without generator). Although facilities will never be 100%..it wasn't bad at all (from my own perspective sha). Small Disinfected water tanks dotted all over camp for hand washing to reduce and eliminate any Ebola risks. Lagos camp tried sha! I feel sorry for those in stream 2 who will not get to experience it! I made amazing friends and they will remain my friends for life (well most sha)... Made friends with some soldiers too and especially the camp commandant. Was part of the (well sought after) OBS. It was very different sha in a good way. Now a different kind of struggle begins with all the PPA, etc. No regrets!!!!! (Not yet anyways...hehehehe) yokiti: Hurray!!! My lady is back powerfully. To be candid, I will be lying if I say I didnt miss you and others that the 3 weeks orientation has limited your activity online (I ghost moded as a result of this on your B14 thread). To God be the glory that that has gone in the ways of its forefather. How was the orientation, the camp and its faclities, your co- corpers and the officials? Hope you had the best of it? Please, have a deserved rest before returning to your PPA for the second phase of your service year. Do have a glorious and fulfilling service year ahead. How is our Smeeky and Samguine, Meeky, Ojestas, Traecey, Rationalmind, Macuwon, Sowl, ajasa4link, jimwalex and all his other abusite, Buksich, adedeji, Skateboard and others; have you heard from them? Its good to hear from you again. Shalom omalicha nwa! |
Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx B14 in the house ...Feel free to ask me any questions relating to pre-camp (things you need), camp, best groups to join in camp to get out of drills, or just to have fun or avoid soldier punishments....etc, etc Foreign students questions (my specialty) also welcomed!!! Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx My very own Yokiti...I ve missed you!!! |
Mannylex: Uhm so the OBS thingy doesn't really workOh dear! |
That went quick!!! Now the running around begins... ![]() What PPA were you guys posted to. Heard no camp for stream 2...how lucky are you guys! |
He was one of the legends...RIP!!! |
Sorry for the late reply Boo...my stress levels do not seem to be coming down. Female hostel is 26 people to a room. A large double room you barely fit 13 or so bunks into. Not too bad compared to other camps I ve heard of. Toilet/shower (yes, shower!) have running water most of the time. But where a bunch of ppl are living, there is bound to be blockages. Mammi market isn't too expensive at all. Just see my previous reply to his excellence. You can slim fit your khaki for 1000 or less (if you go in plenty of time to avoid the rush and price hike). Food is ok. Again see my previous post to His majesty lol. I don't know about nigeria students (they need your student id, statement of results, UNi certificates and lots of passports with red backgrounds).only one point asked me for a copy of my UNi certificate and that was when I went to my platoon to register and collect my kit. Have some money on you though in case they have to charge you for little things (they charged 200 naira to register you online...but if you have a capable phone, you can go online and register there and then but be ready to show them the registration page after you are done. 10 naira for the actual reg form) No, I'm not having fun!!! Simple as that! Maybe it ll be different next week... Who knows?! prixxy7: babe xup dint know U̶̲̥̅̊ ar among d stream 1 peeps. Anyway A̶̲̥̅♏ in ƒø̲̣̣я̅ stream 2 lagos. Pls how ȋ̝̊̅§ d female hostel? How expensive ȋ̝̊̅§ d mammi market? How much did U̶̲̥̅̊ slimfit ur khaki? How ȋ̝̊̅§ d food been served? And wat documents PRECISELY did D̶̲̥̅̊ε̲̣̣̣̥γ̲̣̣̥ require from U̶̲̥̅̊ guys? And above all, α̲̅я̩̥̊ε̲̣̣̣̥ you having fun? |
I hate camp! I ll see how I feel in 2 weeks but right now, I don't like it. Valentinooo: nice one there, hope you are enjoying your stay in camp? I've really missed you o |
![]() Hissexcellencie: *in Yaw's voice* Tans ah bunch! |
Jbluv55...I ve missed you ooooo Jbluv55: I doubt if I still remember how to do this so if I'm not doing right then in Bryan Adam's voice "Please forgive me". I have been trying to avoid having to be the one to reopen 'The Bar' on Forum Games but it seems the crimes I'm committing if I choose not to reopen it have already outweighed the ones I felt I would be committing in reopening it. To those whose hearts I might have broken one way or the other I ask that you give me a chance to mend them. To those who have been watching my back I give to each a big hug and say THANKS. My Oga please note. |
Well... Shaping clothes cost from anything between 500 to 2000 naira depending on the amount of adjustment you need them to do. A simply reduction in size for your khaki should not cost you more than 1000. Just budget 2000 for adjustments sha so that you can have leftover money. I wasn't even asked for a single photocopy of my call up letter. How strange! To be honest, the only document I was asked for a copy of was just my university certificate. Every other dozens of copies I made are still with me. Maybe I ll get to use it at some point ... But please take copies with you ooo..Better to have them and not need them than not to. I heard photocopy at mammi was 20 naira but could go up in price due to demand. So just be prepared.Food is 5 sha.... It's not restaurant quality but it's not bad at all. 5 because the meat/fish is non-existent. I have only stuck to rice, porridge yam and bread. Avoiding beans and eba for obvious reasons. Do not want to have any stomach worries. But overall quality is not bad. Not bad at all. You can get filling food for 200 naira with one meat/fish/plaintain (if you are not a humongous eater shaa) but look around sha...different stalls have different prices so could be higher. Takeaway is extra 50 naira so you can eat in or take your foodflask is you don't want to pay extra. Army men are neutral sha...they are not friendly becos they are obviously army but they do crack smiles. They are humans too so not too callous. Like I said, if you are late or don't do what they say, they WILL punish you and the punishment scales vary ranging from embarassing you on parade ground if you are not standing right or matching properly to frog jumps if late to decamping you if you break a rule (someone has already been decamped for fighting...that s what I heard sha!) Goodluck!!! Hissexcellencie: How much dem dey use shape cloth? |
Lagos Stream 1 guys...I ve never know so much stress ever ooo... Please feel free to ask me whatever you need to know sha... Registration was hellllll...and this is the best way to describe it. Drilling/parade was even worse sef...My feet were swollen from all the standing and your left feet especially from all the "Attention". "...under the sun or in the rain" - part of the NYSC anthem...well, let me tell you to be ready to practice what you sing. ... But they are being a little nice though and yesterday when it started raining, out physical training was cut short and we were sent back to the hostel. Absolute Bliss!Cherish any little time you have to grab some sleep within the first few days (I.e. If you are tired...if you are not tired, feel free to spend all YOUR time at Mammi market). Your body does start getting use to waking up at 3am/3.30am after a few days though. Do not go out to parade late ooo...The soldiers were nice for the first day or so but after that, some people were made to do frog jumps and squats while holding onto their ears for being late! Do not let this be your portion...lol Please feel free to ask me anything else....my brain has so much going on right now...call it "Information overload"...but I go try respond to any questions sha. |

Houseofglam7: Pay a stripper to give him a lap dance, and then shoot him for getting an erection.I definitely like this suggestion! Hahaha |
chinziaski: A woman does not need to tell her man she loves him. A man reads actions more than words and he his a physical being. These are the few thing women need to do to show their men they love their men. 1. "Caringly" ask about his wellbeing. 2. Cook a good meal for him when he's hungry. 3. When he is angry, don't shout back. Just listen. 4. Thrill him with little stuffs, like surprises. 5. Always show him you enjoy his company especially his jokes. 6. Give him good and emotional sex. 7. Give him advice and see it as "our" problem and not his problem. 8. Don't nag. 9. Don't pester him about money. 10. Always look your natural best whenever you're with him and ask him if he likes your outfit. 11. Let him see you as family person and not an outsider. 12. Praise him when he achieves a feat and console him when he's down. 13. Learn to know that he's a man and give him freedom and breathing space. 14. Scold him when he's wrong and give him corrections. 15. Give him a cute child. But you can't help the "cuteness" of the child naa... ![]() |
