As the economic crisis continued to weigh on businesses, telecommunication firms are planning to adopt drastic measures to boost revenue.

Telecoms companies in the country are planning to curb losses from international calls and meet a revenue target of N20 trillion by blocking subscribers from using Skype and other internet call services, called Over-the-Top, the Punch reported on Sunday.

According to the report, subscribers might also be prevented from voice and video calls on Facebook and Whatsapp, among other OTT services.

A manager at one of the major telecommunication companies in the country, who preferred not to be named said, “It is an aggressive approach to stop further revenue loss to OTT players on international calls, having already lost about N100tn between 2012 and 2017.”

The manager added that “If we fail to be pro-active by taking cogent steps now, then there are indications that we may lose between N20tn and N30tn, or so, by the end of 2018.”

This further support Ovum report, a United Kingdom-based research and analytics company that about $386 billion would be lost over a period of six years, between 2012 and 2018, from Nigerian customers using the OTT voice applications.

“Generally, the main fear of the telecoms operators here will be that customers will increasingly use Skype as a substitute for conventional international calls,” said Mattew Reed, the Principal Analyst at Informa Telecoms and Media.

Whereas telecoms operators in the country have said international calls made up the bulk of their revenue due to Nigeria’s large diaspora population, but that the Nigerian Communications Commission is not doing enough to regulate the sector and keep them in business.

However, the Director, Public Affairs, NCC, Mr. Tony Ojobo, said, “We don’t have any evidence that we do not regulate the Internet.”

Gifty has just been evicted from the on-going Big Brother Naija game. Gifty, who has had a pretty controversial time in the house with her string of kisses, multinational accent and comments about not knowing celebs, leaves the house empty handed.

Recall that just some days ago, it was revealed with photos that Gifty before coming into the Big Brother Naija house, was a local hairdresser in Obosi, in Anambra state.

However, from her response above when Ebuka asked her, Gifty who is known for her "fake" attitude did not seem to be proud to call herself a hairdresser.

Hi Nailanders,

My cousin travelled to the US a week ago for a Art conference ( he is on a business visa). The Art Residency as its called is still ongoing and will finish soon.

He made an arrangement with his friend in Ohio that after the conference he would be coming over to stay with him. When he got to the US, he called his friend and the friend started ignoring his calls. He finally got through but the friend told him that he has changed his mind that he should look for somewhere else to stay.

Cousin is disappointed, and doesn't have anybody or place to stay after the conference. The conference is in New york. The Art organizers provided him with accommodation until the end date of the conference.

Nairalanders, I need your help to assist this brother.

After all successive Nigerian governments and individuals did for them. These people are nothing but ingrates. Even the legendary Mandela enjoyed reading Achebe in prison. The goverment of South Africa must execute strict measures against this criminal act. If not that Nigeria is a very accommodating country, things would have worsened beyond control. But for some parts of the North and the Niger Delta, foreigners enjoy their stay here in Nigeria (I am an example) without harassment. Instead of harassment, they even get special treatments. The South African government should not only condemn the act but create measures to deal ruthlessly with it.
