can one make good decisions based on these few points?
Christianity Etc › The Mentality Of A Theist,Good Or Bad? (free Discussion) by davien(op): 1:45am On Oct 31, 2014
Believers have certain aspects of thinking that religion has bestowed on them....below is just a list of points i've noticed so far..

1.

MY RELIGION IS MY MORAL COMPASS;

Most theists love citing their holy books and citations as a "divinely" inspired account of how human morality ought to be..
In many cases they attempt to envision a moral high ground upon others based on their religion....it may be through childhood indoctrination, church and state governance, evangelism, public preaching etc..this can lead to hostilities..the promotion of certain norms as laws...the portrayal of certain human emotions as pure evil(in some religions)...the portrayal of certain thoughts as evil also(in some religions)...etc

2.

I AM NOT A PART OF THE UNIVERSE;

Theists(depending on religion/belief) will often see themselves as the product of a grand other-worldly plan in which someone or something perceived greater than reality has a plan for them...this plan is or rather was given to them through ancient texts of which have to be taken on faith alone...
This can lead to racist-like views on other people who do not accept their "divinely" inspired claims as true...
The major feature of this view is that, since theists perceive themselves as "greater" or "lower" than reality....they treat others around them differently(good/bad) because they believe their existence is only temporary...thus any decision made should only reflect to their perceived "goal reality"...

3.

LIFE, THE UNIVERSE, NAMES, SYMBOLS,ETC HAVE MEANINGS ;

Theists believe that nothing ever happens without a defining meaning...
It doesn't matter if the perceived phenomenon is well understood...it will have a meaning(infact the less understood the better)...
Have an extra digit?....it has a perceived meaning..
Born on a date or string of events?...it has a perceived meaning
Had a dream?.....it has a perceived meaning
The root of the meanings of such things have been instilled through the religion or belief,unaware or ignored to the fact that meanings are imbued by theistic people and differ among others...
Meanings are extended to understand and simplify any perceived event,object,emotion or experience..

4.

I HAVE A SECRET TO SHARE ;

Theists have a "message" to spread about their beliefs/holy books that will reveal an unknown "secret knowledge" to those unaware of it...whether this message is true or validate-able does not matter....the way the theist initially accepted such "secret knowledge" will determine the way they spread or disseminate it to others...
Rejection of the claims pertaining to this knowledge on the basis of lack evidence or the nature of the claim may lead to hostilities(verbal,physical,etc) or lead to pity(because of the consequences the claim is perceived to hold).

5.

TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT ;

Theistic claims to a theist has to be either accepted or denied.....

6.

IF SCIENCE DOESN'T KNOW OR CAN'T TELL ME HOW ...THEN I'M LIKELY RIGHT ;

This particular theistic view is held as an argument from ignorance....in which because there is a lack of knowledge on how something operates therefore their views are somehow automatically right or just as good as anyone else's....
This view is the driving force of most beliefs....the ignorance or lack of knowledge has to be filled up by an explanation...that explanation is mostly unfalsify-able....

7.

MY BASIC VIEW OR KNOWLEDGE APPLIES TO EVERYTHING ;

This is where theistic apologetics comes in...where fields of knowledge that take years to understand and study is belittled by a theist who perceives that his view of reality answers everything there is to know about reality....and any validate-able theory or testable hypothesis that goes against a theist belief' is utterly wrong...
regular or agnostic theist,staunch or gnostic theist and extremist or creationist religious theist use this view on varying grounds...
A regular theist might posit that "science doesn't know everything" therefore "my belief is probably true"
A staunch theist may claim that "god is beyond science" as though it had been established from the start by taking the theistic claims as absolutely true...
An extremist or creationist may see all other methods of knowledge as false and structure his/her mind to ignore any and all other views...
Any and all other evidence against such a belief even without presentation is false.. this only shows how true their beliefs are...if they have to ignore everything else with the extra motive of denigrating others...
Creationists may equate science to religion so as to create a false dichotomy that such things also are taken on faith and dogma...ignoring the fact that science changes upon discovery of more accurate knowledge whereas religion doesn't..

Arbitrary knowledge such as "everything observed is causal" therefore the "universe is also"....this perceived knowledge is then presented with a make believe answer... "therefore god"

SO FAR THESE ARE THE ONLY VIEWS OF THEIST I COULD TOUCH ...

A fallacious straw-man is all this op is spewing.....algebra is merely a mathematical statement that concurs with reality....it doesn't matter if Atheists, Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Greeks etc derived it.....the fact that it applies to reality and was proposed by a theist....says nothing about the theistic claims being true....
Because Newton derived a mathematical statement that described how planets orbit the Sun....doesn't mean alchemy that he believed in is true :-/

Anyway, the parallels fit and negate such arguments as "if God exists y is there so much evil on earth".
lets review your deductions shall we

A: there is evil on earth, therefore God doesnt exist.
correction there is suffering in the world therefore a caring god that has the ability and will to stop it 100% is not possible or rather is not really caring but uncaring.....
The feature of what you call "god".. does not match the reality of things....

B. there are unkempt people, therefore barbers dont exist.
correction...there are unshaven people therefore they either prefer to remain so or are unwilling or uncapable of getting a haircut... smiley

This is the essence and it fits.
The op built his entire analogy on a false dichotomy....besides the one of there being a "god" in the first place....he posits that people do not perceive "god" because they don't look for "god" therefore to them "god" doesn't exist and people who do not seek barber's are somehow the same.....so far, we've all reviewed this as a fallacy... smiley

Christianity Etc › Re: A Story About God Existence Especially For Atheists.....must Read! by davien(m):
Godditex:
A man went to a barbershop to have his hair cut
and his beard trimmed. As the barber began to
work, they began to have a good conversation. They talked about so many things and various subjects.

When they eventually touched on the subject of
God, the barber said: "I don't believe that God
exists." "Why do you say that?" asked the customer. "Well, you just have to go out in the street to realize that God doesn't exist.
Tell me, if God exists, would there be so many sick people? Would there be abandoned children? If God existed, there would be neither suffering nor pain. I can't imagine a loving God who would allow all of these things."

The customer thought for a moment, but didn't
respond because he didn't want to start an
argument. The barber finished his job and the customer left the shop. Just after he left the barbershop, he saw a man in the street with long, stringy, dirty hair and an untrimmed beard. He looked dirty and un-kept.

The customer turned back and entered the barber shop again and he said to the barber: "You know what? Barbers do not exist." "How can you say that?" asked the surprised barber. "I am here, and I am a barber. And I just worked on you!" "No!" the customer exclaimed. "Barbers don't exist because if they did, there would be no people with dirty long hair and untrimmed beards, like that man outside." "Ah, but barbers DO exist! What happens is, people do not come to me."

"Exactly!"- affirmed the customer. "That's the point! God, too, DOES exist! What happens, is, people don't go to Him and do not look for Him. That's why there's so much pain and
suffering in the world."

Hope You Gain Something From This!
let me presume that you are an evangelical Christian.....
I'll first ask how is a barber and your "god" concept synonymous? huh
barber's are people who render their services in exchange for money..... "god" according to your sacred texts is a transcendent father of contradictory features ( namely being space-less,time-less and somehow omnipresent at the same time ) that by definition is caring and just ( with another contradictory feature of being merciful at the same time )....being a father that is supposedly caring.....just and merciful would not allow his children to stream off into danger and not do anything.... undecided
more so a father with those features to let his children willfully be punished infinitely for finite crimes that he himself dictated altogether is just appalling....
Overall barber's can choose to not render services whether you are willing to pay them or not....a father can also choose to ignore his duties to his children, but when this is done....we do not call such a father that neglects his duties...caring or just....
And people can choose to neglect a barber's services for whatever reasons they seem fit.....a child can also neglect a father's love ... but the love and care itself is not withdrawn(if the father is indeed caring)...it is rather geared towards the best interest of the child......
The case as to regarding your "god" concept are people who constantly do not seek harm towards themselves and yet come into a world that brings them harm and yet they are supposed to believe that in some way someone of unknown origin... exists that can willfully prevent it 100%, but chooses not to.. undecided

view the concept you call "god" with your analogy of it and see why it doesn't hold water in comparison to unshaven people....or did children in Somalia choose to be sickly or die of starvation just like a person can choose not to shave? smiley

the bible also shows tht the earth hangs in space and the universe is expansive before there was even a body of knowledge called science. Sorry, but ure kickg on d wrong brick.
So much for a "book of myth"
I rolled off my chair after reading your post.....can you tell me the difference between a circle and a geoid?...anyone with a basic grasp of geometry knows
what a circle is. It's a flat, two dimensional object....is the earth a flat two dimensional object? undecided
And science began with the knowledge of controlled fire basically way older than 2000 years cheesy ....so are you insinuating that biblical tales predates the knowledge of fire? undecided you are the one kicking the wrong brick here...
And it is a shame you don't know what a myth is.....because the Pleiades exists doesn't mean the myth of the seven sisters that turned into it is true....is that understood?

I doubt it very much... In a country that manages to produce university graduates who never read a single hour of history this is what you get. And then the churches do their own part by spreading any type of lies and pseudoscience that is convenient to them. Nobody will question it because nobody has the knowledge and skills needed to evaluate it critically. This whole situation resembles the "dark ages" in so many aspects. Religiosity and its nasty consequences in naija today are pretty much identical with that in 15th century europe. It won't end well.
its even the growing number of creationist lecturers in nigerian universities that worries me.....the spread of willful ignorance and peudoscience has never been higher...

Thanks bro. I do not intend to argue with you on this issue because we all will die someday. I just want to clarify the points i made. What i'm talking about is not what happened at the hour of death and the struggle/pain surrounding it. Some of these people died in accidents on the spot, some were not sick at all but died suddenly, some were also sick. The mysteries that surrounded their actions, the words of their mouth some days before their death(I mean before the accident or whatever that killed them) are things one cant have time enough to tell. But they are mysteries that makes the reality of the after life obvious to whoever that witnessed such things.
so their actions before their deaths entailed something beyond life?....elaborate please..

May be you are looking at afterlife as a one room where everybody that enters it will have the same story to tell. Even here on earth, someone in Nigeria cannot have exact story to tell as someone in the USA will tell. Yet the after-life is far much more than here. Whether we have same story to tell is not the issue i"m raising but the fact that a lot of people of different religion have experienced this. Even if i would doubt them, i wont doubt the one of the atheists (both whites and blacks) who have experienced it and today they are no more atheists. Some of these atheists were born into the families of atheists. I have witnessed some of these happenings live and have also heard or read about some of them too.
I do not even have the slightest idea of what an after-life would be....nor if it does exist....there is no evidence to support it....so it doesn't apparently appear to exist....so goes any claim that cannot be proven outside people calling it "obvious"...
and whether an atheist or agnostic has an nde...doesn't make an nde into evidence of an after-life and as i've wrote earlier....nde's are historical and the experience has been linked to beliefs...societal influence...culture...suggestive messages etc...
and yet again i fail to see how because an atheist is convinced an nde is proof of an after-life...therefore it is true?.... if an atheist is convinced allah is real....does that make it true?... if an atheist is convinced that the earth is flat... does it make it true?.... so why then do you consider an atheist being convinced of a phenomenon will make it true?....and by the way....through your online research did you not also come across atheists that according to you are the prime source of evidence for life after death that remained atheist or better still theists that have become atheists through ndes...? undecided

2.what would be your reaction to someone who asked you to prove otherwise...

3.If you had evidence against such a belief....will you withdraw it till you find it true?

4.what can you say for the vast others that have lived before you in ancient times....are their beliefs different from yours and what do you think death must have felt like for people living in ancient days.....would they consent it being the end with their level of understanding?

If you ve witnessed the mysterious events that took place within the dying period of some people(christians, muslims, athiests etc) you will know that this world is not the end of life. I have witnessed a lot of them personally, including that of my younger brother who died some years ago.
apologies for your younger brother....i've witnessed the deaths of a lot of my relatives.......and nearing death the body does what it does best.....try to keep the brain active.....oxygen deprivation and neurones firing off within the brain cause a lot of weird things....even in the living oxygen deprivation through auto-er.otic asphyxiation can lead to extreme euphoria...

Again if you ve heard testimonies of those who had near death experience across the globe (christians, atheists, muslims , budhists, traditionalists), you will know that life doesnt end here on earth. I have witnessed such testimonies face to face with those that experienced it. I ve also read some of the testimonies both online and offline.
For many years when i was a theist i held such things as true also but when you take a closer look objectively....its a convolution of sorts....
results of alleged ndes' experiences varies throughout history....and are mostly influenced by culture....beliefs...society...and even suggestive messages affect and produce nde's……… i bet you wouldn't believe me if i told you people become atheists after nde's just like the reverse cases you are used to hearing.....the thing is i can't suddenly say "aha,that means blah blah blah"..as you are presenting to me right now...

Bro, life is larger than you think. I am not forcing you to believe but your unbelief doesnt change anything. Even if i decide to agree with you, it still does not change the truth about this mystery.

look at the bold in your comment.....how is such a rearrangement after death impossible?
because by definition...that system tends towards death.... each cell in your body die at one time or another....main death is when that system cannot sustain itself anymore...

What makes people unique? dna? What if people have the same dna? The same shape of brain etc? What really hinders reincarnation?
actually humans have less than 1% variation and in that if we were to express the part of your genome that belongs to you in bytes....it would just be 10 megabytes.....even still we are all born with an average of 150 mutations(mostly neutral)....and accumulate no less than a dozen in a lifetime....that continuous changing system that makes you unique cannot be derived in the same way it began....

Heaven awaits
i am not sure why you instantly brought up "if the brain is just chemicals and matter..." yet still such a re-arrangement after death is impossible......
as biological beings that need to sustain ourselves with biochemical energy....we are constantly re-arranging cells(and destroying cells) as we age.....that is why you never look 100% the same as when you were 5.....that configuration of cells has been modified....and when you die....the process stops....the energy is then given back to the environment albeit in the conversion of the lifeless husk that was once you into useful energy by saprophytic organisms.... smiley

For most people it is true because a book says so...
For others it is true because they can't fathom an only mortal life...
