gidgiddy:An attempt was made by Obasanjo in 1978 to correct Ironsi's blunder so that we could return to true federalism or at least a semblance of it but it was still an Igbo man that sabotaged the process. You wanna know how? |
obynzo:At the time the UPGA alliance was being proposed between AG and NCNC with the objective of correcting Zik's blunder of aligning Igbos with the North against his fellow other Southern tribes, wasn't it from the East that Michael Okpara the leader of NCNC and other leading NCNC members were sent to Ibadan to meet with the wife of incarcerated Awolowo as the leader of the remnants of the AG? With this do you still need further evidence that the NCNC headquarters was shifted from Lagos to the East by Zik? |
Dedetwo:You seem to have forgotten that as at the time Ojukwu was opposing Gowon in the capacity of regional governor, Gowon had reversed some of Ironsi's centripetal Decrees and restored the regions back to a semi-autonomous status. |
gidgiddy:It is you that don't know what you are talking about. I don't know how many times one has to repeat this for you to get it into your skull. The resentment about Ironsi has nothing to do with how many subnational units he met and how many he left. It is rather about how autonomous he met them and how autonomous they were when he left. Look if he had created 1 billion provinces and 300,000 groups of provinces and never stripped them of their civil services cum autonomy like the former regions had, no one would be complaining about him today. After all, the minorities in the regions back then were all already agitating for further split of the regions so that they too might enjoy the autonomy in place thus have the opportunity to govern themselves and be free from the domination of the big three. But Ironsi came in and further centralized everything by his Unification Decree and centralization of the public service which effectively killed resource control. By so doing he did the exact opposite of what the general public had been agitating for. That is the issue. Stop being evasive. Contrary to your claim, no government which came after Ironsi did worse than him. In actual fact the worst thing that can happen to a young thriving democracy is the introduction of military rule and the subversion of a constitution drafted by the people themselves. Now tell me which other military ruler was guilty of introducing military rule into a democracy and also subverting a we-the-people constitution. |
nku5:So a coup which killed the cream de la cream of Northern leaders and left their Igbo counterparts untouched for running a corruption ridden government needed the British propaganda to make Northerners feel disgusted with such a coup? I guess it was also the British propaganda it took for Ojukwu to get disgruntled with the killings of Igbos in the North hence he declared Biafra? And how really developed today are your Greece and Argentina where military thrived till the eighties compared with the US, Germany, UK, Japan etc which remain top on world power ranking? Are you comparing apples and oranges? Your claim that it was after the counter coup that the West and Midwest began to act as they never supported your Igbo coup is the biggest joke of the year. You mean the Midwest people were all happy about the Igbo coupists torture to death of their son Okotie-Eboh, and the West was happy with the brutal and cold blooded murder of their illustrious sons like Shodeinde, Ademulegun, Akintola, etc all before the Counter coup? You must have assumed that Westerners and Midwesterners are like you Igbos who really don't get pained by the gruesome murder of your own people hence you always chose the North for political alliance almost immediately after they finish slaughtering your brothers in large numbers. Only you Igbos are actually that stupid. No other tribe shares that anomalous sadomasochistic DNA with Igbos. If the background circumstances of the First Republic justified the senseless Nzeogwu coup as you laboured in vain to convince the public here, then stop crying over your loss of over 3 million souls which resulted from the chain of events the coup sparked off. And if we are to follow your analogy in your last paragraph above, don't you think those who planned and executed the equally bloody revenge coup did so because they saw the planners and executors of the first coup get away with selective and lopsided killings? |
obynzo:Who told you I have gone silent? Are you suggesting that you live on NL and have nothing else to do each day? |
Confirmedzombie:Guy, if all this your grammar mistakenly hit person, na mortuary straight! |
Gyong:And to the PDP, he was a demon in 2016 who shouldn't occupy office due to certificate forgery and duping of investors in Lagos through his Afrinvest but in 2020 when he joined PDP he became a saint with a clean and genuine certificate to the extent that the same PDP is now defending him against the very forgery suit they started against him in 2016. Don't you see why it is not good to be emotional about Nigerian politics? It makes you one sided without realizing it. |
n3xt:Obaseki didn't use any certificate in first term. He used affidavits. |
Notatribalist:Seunmsg cited the cases in which PDP got to power through the back door in order to counter the guy. Did PDP get power through the courts in Imo to have warranted him mentioning it? |

gidgiddy:Was a militarily governed Nigeria the dreams of our founding fathers when they were struggling for independence? |
gidgiddy:So his breaking down the regions into provinces which over which he appointed military governors to head and be taking instructions from him from hence forth coupled with the castration of the regional governments through stealing their civil services away to the center were not tantamount to tampering with the regional federal arrangement substantially? |
Dedetwo:That there was a stalemate between the coalition partners wasn't enough reason for Ironsi to take over. All he should have rather done in that circumstances in adherence to his solemnly sworn oath of office to defend that constitution in all circumstances was to simply stand aside and watch the parliamentarians resolve the stalemate themselves while he only provided security to ensure that the resolution did not take a violent turn. It might have taken them many scheduled and rescheduled meetings to have finally reached an agreement on who should replace Balewa from among them. Politicians don't ever really disagree eternally. They have no permanent friends nor enemies. And trust me that the NCNC members would have later succumbed to NPC's choice just as they agreed to go with NPC on the floor of the federal house in 1960 when there was a stalemate in the 1959 elections by which no single party had the percentage to form the government of the day. As a disciplined and professional Army GOC conscious of his sacred oath of office, Ironsi should have rejected the parliamentarians call on him to take over and directed them to go and do the resolution themselves assuming but not coceding that that account is even true. There was also a stalemate in 2010 when the constitution was silent on what to do in the circumstances defined by Yaradua's prolonged absence from Nigeria. After much back and forth didn't they eventually all mutually agreed to a doctrine of necessity by which the resolved the impasse? So why did Ironsi even involve himself at all in the First Republic parliamentary stalemate? Why? |
obynzo:So what stopped Zik from pushing NCNC (which we are told had nationalistic outlook) to the North hence contest there? Was NCNC's nationalism only limited to the South? Hehe.... Do you recall that Zik practically moved to headquarters of NCNC to the East yet it was a party which leadership was handed over to him by a Yoruba man in Lagos the national capital. So much for a nationalist. |
obynzo:So what was the West too denied that made Akinjide say same? Please recall that both Shagari and Akinjide said these things independently and at different times. |
obynzo:The cross carpeting was in both directions and some of it favored Zik. The person who represented my own constuency the (Pa Awodi) from Kukuruku Division of the present Edo State crossed over to the NCNC side from the AG he initially belonged to. Stop these lies please. Moreover, Arthur Prest representing a constuency in Delta State of today was an Urhobo who crossed over to Awolowo's side. Would an Urhobo man (a non-Yoruba) have crossed to AG if Awolowo had based his alleged call for Cross carpeting on a Yoruba tribal agenda? In actual fact what happened on the floor of the Western House that really have Awolowo victory was the fact that the other parties like IPP and OIL, decided to go into coalition with AG just like how you Igbos of the NCNC decided to go with NPC at independence in the federal house. |
Dedetwo:Then you have obviously never read Richard Akinjide's account which was also corroborated by that of Shagari that the politicians never willingly gave power to Ironsi but that he seized it from their hands under duress. According to you the constitution didn't give any power to decide who became Balewa's successor. Good argument. But neither did the constitution give him the power to make himself Balewa's successor. |
obynzo:So you are still spreading this lie that NCNC won that election and Awolowo used tribalism to change the results? Awolowo must have been superhuman to have, without going to a court of law, been able to alter the results of an election already declared by the electoral commission. Chai! You Igbos are so funny. Now let me help you here: What Awolowo spoke against was the idea of someone from another region (not from another tribe) coming to rule the Western Region. There were many non-,Yoruba tribes in the Western Region then including Ijaws, Binis, Urhobos, Esans, Etsakos, Etuno, Okpameri, Unemes, Isokos, and even the Igboid Aniomas. Did any of these tribes indicate interest in becoming Western Region premier and Awolowo objected to it? Awolowo was a federalist who believed that the self governance for which the regions were created in the first place must be strictly adhered to and not for one of the regions to try to govern another in the name of one-Nigeria. And may I ask you why Zik, in pursuit of his fraudulent detribalization, didn't rather go and seek premier of the Northern Region where he was even born and brought up hence more popular? |
obynzo:Did the constitution say it must be the deputy prime minister? I thought your brother Dedetwo already argued here that there was no deputy prime minister position? And if there was deputy prime minister position and the law said he was next in line, why didn't Ironsi invoke that law to install him and back him up with his power as military GOC rather than take power for himself? |
obynzo:So why didn't the issue of a lift on the ban on political activities come up there if it was truly intended to just return the country back to how Ironsi met it in its state of people centered sovereignty? In going to Aburi, why did they sideline the genuinely elected political leaders of the people and opted for civil servants and other agents of the establishment who had never been involved in politics to have known what exactly the people wanted? May I ask you who represented your own federal constituency in Aburi summit the way we all had freely elected representatives to the 1958 London Constitutional conference that drafted the regions based federalism which we all adopted and still cherish till today? |
obynzo:Thrash as usual. There was no single remedy in Aburi Accord. The Accord was an illegality which lacked the stamp of the people's sovereignty as those who attended it and made the Accord were all either soldiers or unelected civil servants working for the establishment and therefore had no business with politics and law making courtesy of the civil servants anonymity principle. Where on earth do soldiers and civil servants make laws for people? Moreover, Aburi Accord had nothing on lifting Ironsi's ban on political activities towards an election time table for a return of power to the civilians. It was just an agreement on how soldiers would henceforth share power across regional lines. Were we going to be ruled forever by the military? And you call such trashy document a solution to the problem then? |
obynzo:It is you that doesn't know anything about parliamentary system. Pursuing election dispute outside the court is illegal be it in presidential or parliamentary system. Stop playing on words. |
obynzo:Balewa's removal didn't alter the constitution. In fact the constitution spelt out what to do when the prime minister was no longer available on a permanent basis. Then the military court-martial laws also clearly stated what do do about soldiers who mutiny. Ironsi did neither of these and that was where problems started. Didn't the North promise not to disrupt Ironsi's government provided he punished the coup plotters? That means the Northerns themselves didn't see the killing of their own Balewa as a problem but Ironsi's tampering with the constitution which made them stage violent riots targeted at Igbos right under Ironsi's nose. |
obynzo:Nigeria's mess was wholly Ironsi's fault for introducing military rule at all in the first instance and therefore violating the people's sovereignty and power to determine who leads them and change the person by themselves when they are no longer okay with him. |
obynzo:I should respect a dead man who laid the foundation of all the problems we face till today? Why haven't you given this same admonition to your brother here who just called David Ejoor some vile names here? What did Ironsi achieve other than a constitutional crisis which ended up in a war that took the lives of over 3 million of his own innocent civilian kinsmen? Do you even know what an achievement is? |
obynzo:As long as the results of that election had been declared by the electoral commission, it was valid until upturned by a court. So without going to court, Zik was doing an illegality by disputing the election outside the courts while still trying to retain his position. However his refusal to resign from the government to pursue the case in court meant he still saw himself as part of the NNA governing coalition. |
obynzo:Gowon was already trying to rectify the mess but had to halt it because of Ojukwu's intransigence. Moreover, Gowon didn't take over power from the civilians like Ironsi did. As at when Gowon took over power, there was no longer a democratic structure on ground for him to have handed over power back to. In fact there was no constitution on ground again. It had become a chaotic situation. But Ironsi met on ground a political structure and the very cconstitution he swore to protect and defend and which clearly spelt out what he should do in that circumstances but he refused and chose to start drafting his own selfish and Igbocentric constitution to pursue a separate agenda totally different from genuine national interest. |
obynzo:So violating his solemnly sworn oath of office was not an act of indiscipline? Refusing to punish majors who killed their seniors in cold blood was not a way to show the seeds of indiscipline in the army? Did you even read what you wrote before posting it? |
obynzo:Neither were you yourself born then. If Balewa was losing it then, was military take over supposed to be the answer? Didn't Ironsi too end up losing it so badly that Nigeria became the mess it is today? If Balewa wasn't circumspect can we describe Ironsi as being better of than Balewa in being circumspect? The same Ironsi who surrounded himself with Northern army officers as security details at a time Northerners were seething with anger over his brothers brutal and lopsided murder of Ahmadu Bello and Balewa. Was that how to be circumspect? The same Ironsi was told of a Gowon and T.Y. Danjuma involvement in impeding revenge coup by Maddiebo his brother from the east and surprisingly he invited Gowon and T.Y. Danjuma to his office and asked Maddiebo to repeat what he said to him before the duo. Was Ironsi by so doing not far worse than Balewa in not being circumspect? When you Igbos talk you don't think deeply in this your quest to defend Ironsi's blunders at all cost. |
obynzo:The more reason Ironsi was an irresponsible and power hungry idiot. If he himself wasn't greedy how could he fall for an advice from his own inferior officer to violate his sacred oath of office? Do you now see that Ironsi sowed the seeds of indiscipline, lack of professionalism and non-adherence to the culture of seniority in the Nigerian Army? |
obynzo:If Zik was not back in NNA, then how come he still retained his position in government after the NNA had been declared winner of the 1965 elections? Didn't the East later break the UPGA agreement to boycott the election? |
