Katsumoto:
You seem to have gotten this argument mixed up somewhere. Did Zik not contest and win a seat in the Western House of Assembly? This discussion was centred on whether he had the moral right to be the leader of the Western house. I only responded to the points that you made when you entered the debate. The fact remains that a few Easterners won elections in the West. Yoruba people have the right to decide who leads them Yorubaland. If they do not want an Igbo man to lead/represent them, you can not fault them for that. Afterall, a non-Easterner did not lead the East and a non-northerner did not lead in the North. Also, Zik used Igbo numbers and influence to replace Eyo Ita who was Efik.
Did any non-easterner win any seats in the East or did any non-northerner win seats in the North? That Yoruba people were liberal enough to allow non-westerners to contest and win elections in the West should not lead to tham accepting a non-westerner leading them. I am not going to repeat this point again. If you argue otherwide, then I beg you to please convince one of your non-igbo friiends to run as governor of your state and also convince your kinsmen to vote for him.

By the way, George Galloway won the seat in Bethnal Green and Bow, an area with a high concentration of Asians, after campaigning for palestinian rights and being against the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan where anti-war sentiments were high in 2005. Little wonder he lost the election in 2010. Why did he not try his popularity in a predominanly english constituency in Surrey, Kent, or the west of England?
What morality are you talking about? Of course, Azikiwe had every socio-political audacity to be a leader in the western regional house of assembly. He contested and won seat to represent a constituency in western region. By the way, Azikiwe was not the only Igbo person that won a seat into western regional house of assembly.

I guess you got it wrong on the issue of Eyo Ita who was an Ibibio. There were more to the case than eyes could see. Eyo Ita was a victim of his greediness and ingratitude. Did you inquire while Eyo Ita became a spy of the British colonial masters? When Eyo Ita decamped from NCNC on the urging of Awolowo, he was trounced in the polls by a headmaster from his town who ran under NCNC.

At the same era in discourse, a Hausa man was elected the first mayor of Enugu. If there was non-easterner qualified enough and commands the credentials to win in the east, such person will win.

@Katsumoto

As much as Awolowo’s inconsequential vision should be appreciated by his Yoruba kinsmen, it is a stretch beyond any pale of comprehension to crown him a magician. Awolowo could not beautify Ibadan in five years (5) as the premier of western region of Nigeria talk less of transforming Lagos into a megacity.

Was he not the same Awolowo of western regional firm that Shell D’arcy requested money for crude oil exploration in Ondo and he pledged poverty? Yet few years down the line, he encouraged Yoruba sons and daughters to fight for crude oil in the name of One-Nigeria.

I found it studiously unfunny that few intellectual midgets of Yoruba extraction would ask Ndigbo to enumerate the political achievements of Azikiwe. Anyway, these nitwits would wait in disappointment because Ndigbo in particular and easterner in general are not known as chest-beaters and loudmouths.

It will tantamount to ludicrous attempt and extroverted indulgence for any human being to arrogate false political accolades to a person on the sole dictates of ethnic bias.

Katsumoto, it is unfortunate that you wrote Awolowo was the premier of western region from 1954 to 1959. The regions did not become autonomous with regional powers until 1956. All the regional governments were led by heads or leaders of government and regional governors.

The statement you made that Awolowo was the premier of western region is akin to Protectorates having a Prime Minister before Nigeria became independent country. Are you so mesmerized by the ethnic bias that you seem to loose the historical touch?

I am not surprise that certain trolls from the jungle called Nigeria would throttle to any length to twist history in order to ascribe unworthy accolade to impostors. I lived in Lagos for considerable years and never heard that Lagos was not capital of Nigeria but Lagos Island. What a condemnable fallacy.

From the so-called Lagos Island to Mainland, the federal ministry responsible for Lagos as a capital territory took charge. When it comes to citing National Stadium, National Theater, MMA, Industrial Estates, Parastatals, National Training Institutes and Infrastructures of international repute, Lagos, then capital of Nigeria and known today as Lagos State, was the domain of federal government of Nigeria.

I can not stop laughing at the jackasses that insist that Awolowo built everything in Lagos but Ibadan. It must be recalled that Ibadan was the capital of western region of Nigeria and Awolowo was premier for mere three years (3). In fact, if by any known chance that Awolowo, as premier of western region of Nigeria, accomplished all the feats few trolls would want us to believe, I say Awolowo is the greatest magician ever.  However, the deplorable state of Ibadan, the regional capital and seat of Awolowo’s abrakatabra, vehemently refused to accept such unfounded fallacy. Have you being to Ibadan lately?

I am bent on updating some loonies on this board about tough decisions made during Nigeria independent conferences. The issue of Lagos as federal capital and not constitute part of western region of Nigeria were contentious and protracted. Awolowo would have stuck to his guns and torpedo the national conferences and end what we know today as Nigeria.  Believe me it was wise decision on his side that he gave up on such petty issue. If he did not give up, Ibadan would have been better than Lagos. Could you imagine the dust bin?

You guys love to hang onto the Biafra line, now answer this question; would the entity called Nigeria exist if Zik did not go with the Northerners to create Nigeria to meet his greedy ends? Because the westerners refused him leadership he wanted to rule them by all means and settled for figure head ruler. what a shame to Igbo's. Now when that same entity Nigeria did not work, they wanted to carve out Biafra. You think Yoruba's will follow you into that nonsense? after forcing them to be in Nigeria, you now want to run when you dont have your way. Abeg stop crying over spilt milk, no one betrayed you, you betrayed yourselves. The moment you begin to ccept and acknowledge that the faster Igboland will progress. Awolowo was the greatest and a great visionary, he saw the dangers of Nigeria, and concentrated on his own regional development which many Igbo's benefitted. Zik's greed is the cause of Nigeria's failure and the failure of the so called Biafra. That is who you should be blaming. Stop throwing blame where it does not fit. If not for the fact that Yoruba's are very good with History, you guys will be trying to tell us who we are.  grin
You seem to be one of many Nigerians that missed the boat on correct and proper recorded events. The answer to your unfortunate and juvenile question is capital YES.

Please disabuse your mind on the political issues of 1959. As a matter of fact, Zik did not rush to northern region for personal ends. Rather the coalition government of NPC and NCNC was as result of Awolowo fast draw when he sent secret teams to Bello and Azikiwe for political deals.

Awolowo was the first to give up Lagos as part of west region hence Lagos as capital of Nigeria.

Awolowo and your forbearers fought in 1967 to keep Nigeria as one entity hence the cesspit.

If I remember correctly, Scottish MPS sit in the House of parliament and are allowed to vote on certain issues. Scotland may have a football team but the last I remember, all scots, Northern Irish, Welsh, and English carry British passports. I can also draw parallels because Nigeria received its independence from great britain.
Great Britain comprised nation states that were politically held together through a loose federation. Most world bodies regard Northern Ireland, Wale, Scotland and England as countries. In fact, they are countries that makeup United Kingdom. Granted that Nigeria gain its independence from Great Britain does not mean it was politically organized as the later. If this was the case, the regions in Nigeria would have given way to more politically independent nation states with loose federation at the center than obtained in 1950s and 60s.

Place of residence to determine where to contest. I ask again, there are many scots living in england, why has not one contested in England? Also why don't the english contest in Scotland? What you should be doing is citing many examples of people who have contested and won elections in places outside their regions of origin. Instead you are postulating some utopian fantasy. Did we not learn democracy from the British? Why should Nigerians suddenly develop a political maturity that our teachers and other more mature democracies have not developed in several centuries? Please stop this silly argument. Perhaps you can say this because Awo or TOS Benson were not seeking to be premiers in the East and please forget this place of residence bull.sh.i.t.

Besides, I am not a fan of the central system introduced by Gowon. I believe in true federalism or confederationism. Nigeria needs strong regions based on a collective will and a weak centre. Why should an Easterner be the premier in the East and the West and Northerner the premier in the North? Are you suggesting that there were no credible leaders in the west? Being a westerner I want a westerner to be my leader. That westerners were accommodating should not be misconstrued as them been mugus. If a man from Zamfara born in Anambra and residing in Anambra decides to run for governor of Anambra (or the state you are from) will you vote for him? Zik was born in Zungeru in the North, why did he not contest for the premiership there? Residing in Lagos was not enough for him to have contested the premiership of the West.
I could not believe you are bent on drawing unparallel analogy between Nigeria and the political arrangement that involves Scotland and England. The last time I check though, Scotland had football team that represented it as a country in a sport competition played amongst nations. Scotland had qualified as one of the countries to participate in World Cup.

However, the political entities known as regions were not consider as a nation or nation state. As far as I am concerned, Scotland is a nation state with loose federation with England and another entity to form Great Britain. It is very unfortunate you are drawing such comparison.

The loose federation that existed in Great Britain can not be compared with the federalism in USA.

Katsumoto:
As usual, you argue with your hands and not your brains. Is democracy not about numbers? Why did Americans not vote for a black president 200 years ago? Could it be because their country was in its infancy and blacks were still considered primitive? How many Yankees have won elections in the confederate states? Has a scottish man won elections in england? Has an English man won elections in scotland? Do you see where I am going with these? Those cpuntries, the UK and US, have had democracies and their country for several centuries but people still contest primarily in their regions. There may be a few candidates who have contested outside their regions in the US and the UK but I am sure it will be a very small number.

So back to my questions, ode. Why should Zik want to be the leader of the Western region? Why not the Northern region that had less qualified candidates than the Western region. Nigeria was not yet a nation and to expect the kind or political maturity which is absent in almost all republics is not only naive but also disingenuous. Yoruba people had had different leadership and organised societies for several centuries and you expect that they would accept leadership from a man from a region that did not have the sort of organised leadership that they were used to. This is also considering that there were several credible leaders in the west at the time. The fact is that Zik miscalculated; he assumed that because Yoruba people were very liberal and accommodating, that they would allow him be their leader.

Please save your idiotic argument for lalaland; in the real world, people vote their own. You can ignore me all you want but I will not let you pass your conjectural crap as fact on these forums. I will defeat you each time because I use facts to debate while you use your ninny.
Are you sure about this present day feel-happy and make-for-media-house concoction? I think exploratory research would have uncovered a well balanced, not made for all eyes, historic appendages about African-Americans and USA presidency.

Democracy also guarantees that a citizen can register to vote and voted for where the citizen domiciled. In this case, Azikiwe was living in western region and had every privilege in the books to vote and contest electoral position in western region of Nigeria. In USA, the major factor that will determine if candidate contests an election is place of domicile. During the era in question, an Igbo person contested and won electoral seat to represent Benin city.

Wow!!! I could not believe my ears about these tidings generated by Katsumoto. If you have proffered that Nigeria had been and will remain fractured during voting, why are we deceiving ourselves about one-Nigeria? I guess it is hypocrisy.

@BOMANY

If I should go by the unbiased history, I had to point out that your historical knowledge of the real estate referred as Palestine is woefully wrong. At the end of World War 1, the areas that comprised Jordan, Israel and the so-called Palestinian Authority  formerly known as Palestina was changed to Palestine by British mandated to take charge by the League of Nation resolution.

In 1948, Arab League of Nations which Syria was a bona fide member and under the leadership of its secretary-general, Raham Persha, declared total annihilation and momentum massacre of the young State of Israel.

As it turned out, it was not an ordinary threat as Arab armies descended on Israel. In fact in such attack, a Jordanian Brigade led by a British Colonel captured Judea and Samaria and the area was promptly named West Bank because it was situated at the west bank of River Jordan. To trail the deceit of Arabs, it is only West Bank that retains the English name within the so-called Palestinian Authority. It must be recalled that due to this unwarranted attack on the young state of Israel by the Arab countries, many Arab settlers ran way and became refugees. In fact, the Arabs evacuated the state of Israel based on the stern warning of momentous massacre issued by the Arab League of Nations in 1948.

But it is the rabble-rousing Zik who may wind up running the show. Last year he journeyed north to the Sardauna's palace with a proposal to work together to defeat Awolowo. The Sardauna was happy to cooperate, for he bitterly hates Awolowo, who for years has urged that the powers of the northern emirs be reduced and is trying to split off the large non-Moslem "Middle Belt" from the Northern Region and make it a separate state. None of the three regions is likely to get the absolute majority needed to rule all Nigeria by itself, but a Northern-Eastern coalition could make Zik the first federal Prime Minister; the North's Sardauna appears to have his own eyes on the dignified post of Governor General.

Helicopters & Trinkets. Awolowo's
Action Group is fighting all out to beat this powerful combine. By far the best organized and disciplined party in the country, its slick politicking is worthy of the U.S. pressagents Awolowo has hired to steer his campaign. He and his aides sail through the back country in helicopters, festoon the towns with modern banners and posters, and hand out books of matches and other election trinkets by the thousands. Two TV stations—the first in black Africa—will carry Awolowo's campaign cries when they start operating early next month.

Awolowo styles himself a "liberal democrat" and favors uncompromising allegiance with the West in foreign policy. Zik swears he is not anti-West (his son is at Harvard), but insists that independent Nigeria should follow a neutral foreign policy, much like that of Kwame Nkrumah in nearby Ghana

Such sophisticated distinctions have little part in the campaigning—Awolowo and Zik prefer to denounce each other as oppressors of the people. It goes over much better.

What a load of rubbish. This is a disservice to humanities such as history. It was Awolowo, through Rosiji and Akintola, who journeyed to north to the so-called Sardauana’s palace treacherously begging for the position of finance minister.

Action Group was politically destroyed by the combined efforts of NPC led by Balewa and NNDP led by SL Akintola during 1964 regional election. Again, it was Azikiwe and NCNC that extended political ladder to the political remnants of Action Group that give rise to United Progressive Grand Alliance (UPGA).

This is self-aggrandizement gone seriously out of control. It is funny the so-called Awolowo’s achievements during his tenure as the premier of western region blossomed immediately after the Nigeria-Biafra civil war orchestrated by the propaganda machines of western Nigerian regional publications. Anybody who had any sense of arithmetic would easily understood Awolowo could not humanly accomplished what had been erroneously accredited to him during the time he served as premier of western region of Nigeria.

Awolowo was the head of government with remarkable limited powers for western region of Nigeria for about four years (4) and premier of the western region of Nigeria for about three years (3). Anybody with iota of clue about the era in discussion and knowledge of construction will discern that, unless batchers for house, stadium and TV station, all the so-called first in Africa were indeed jokes suited for moonlight gathering.

Talking of vision, I am yet to see where Awolowo demonstrated the much-talked about political vision when, in fact, political parties led by Awolowo did not win majority seats in elections conducted either in the protectorate or Nigeria. In addition, Awolowo was a political chicken. During the electioneering campaigns in1956, Awolowo promised to storm northern region of Nigeria only to back-pedal on the barking of northern region political stalwarts who promised political calamity if Awolowo dares step onto northern region.
