Politics › Re: World Bank — Nigeria Poverty Rate By Geopolitcal Zone 2025 by DeepSight(m):
What did I see there? 137k per year as the National poverty line? Does that mean that they are using the premise that only people who earn less than this a year are poor? If so, they are saying that only people who earn 11, 400 Naira and less a month are considered poor?

If that is the metric/ premise used then the truth is that this is a bad metric. The global poverty line used by the World Bank used to be $1 a day which would mean that anyone earning less than N45K a month is poor, not this absurd N11, 400! Now consider that the $1 line is actually old and what is used today is more the $3 line! Consider also that minimum wage is 70k Naira.

So unless I am missing something, these stats are very very bad as the actual figures for the poor per region will be FAR worse than represented.

Economists please correct me in case I have assumed wrongly on the premises.

It is most likely that such interaction already exists for decades at the minimum but is classified.

In general, beware of the words of astrophysicist Robert Jastrow in his 1978 book, God and the Astronomers:

"For the scientist who has lived by his faith in the power of reason, the story ends like a bad dream. He has scaled the mountains of ignorance, he is about to conquer the highest peak; as he pulls himself over the final rock, he is greeted by a band of theologians who have been sitting there for centuries."

In quoting this, I mean to suggest that many ordinary and spiritual people already have experience of that which you seek.

Jakumo:
Your mention of the huge US military presence in Ramstein Airforce Base in Germany caught my attention, because that long-standing defensive collaboration between the US and Germany is a fine example of how a democratic nation in the heart of Europe can retain its sovereignty while allowing the world's most potent military force to maintain a strong presence which includes the housing of nuclear-capable strategic bombers, amid a phalanx of assorted combat aircraft. Now that the forces of Russia's deranged tyrant, Mad Vlad Putin, are waging war against Ukraine right on the very doorstep of Western Europe, that US presence in Germany is proving to be KEY to maintaining our planet's fragile balance of power, and averting WW3 in the process.

While the Russian Bear has remained Europe's main security concern for the twenty years since Mad Vlad Putin rose to power as Russia's reigning demagogue, the continent of Africa's greatest peril is that of Islamist terror, which we are now learning has been covertly funded by Middle Eastern Islamic theocracies such as the UAE, whose military support for East Africa's myriad Islamic terror cults is at this very moment sustaining and fueling a fundamentalist genocide of biblical proportions in Sudan, where civilians are being massacred on an industrial scale.

Now, if Germany has been able to rely on American military support to keep from being annexed by the megalomaniac tyrant Putin in Russia, then Nigeria would be wise to recognize that the multi-billion dollar funding of Islamic terror by Middle Eastern sheikhdoms poses a grave danger that looms large enough to warrant the presence of a counterbalancing force that will stand up against Islamist invaders and land grabbers who seek to turn all nations of the entire West African seaboard into an Islamic backwater comparable to Afghanistan.

Hopefully, President Bola Tinubu will seize this initiative and formally oversee the construction of not one, but several fully equipped and strategically located US military bases from which combat sorties can be launched within minutes of threats being identified anywhere within Nigerian territory. If Germany can maintain its cultural and political independence while for decades hosting a massive US airbase with thousands of military personnel on standby, then there is no reason to be concerned that Nigeria could become an American colony simply because US military hardware is based on Nigerian soil to maintain the balance of influence in the sub-region, by checkmating Islamist expansionism that is already manifesting all over Nigeria, at great cost in lives and property.
+
Alot to unpack here, but most importantly do note that the history of American presence in Germany springs from the second world war. And yes while it is true that such Western and advanced democracies may cooperate in that way, there is a huge difference when it comes to Africa. Witness France and the West African Sahel.

I may or may not revert, in detail, but will try. Really pressed for time.
Politics › Re: United States Conducts Surveillance Missions Over Nigeria From Ghana by DeepSight(m): 1:43pm On Dec 08, 2025
Jakumo:
My knowledge of US military bases is limited, so I truly do not know whether there is currently a US base in Ghana. All the same, it is exceedingly rare to hear of any Islamist land grabs, mass kidnappings and church massacres in Ghana, so clearly there is a STRONG deterrent in place in Ghana that is keeping terror gangs away, but whose exact nature remains a mystery to me.

China does have a massive expatriate population living permanently in Ghana, where they busy themselves mining for precious metals and operating numerous retail outlets, so it does strike me as odd that the USA might have a huge base in an African country where China has a strong economic and expansionist interest.
+
First and foremost, there is a history of the US trying to place its Africomm (African Command) in Africa. It was asked of the noble president Yaradua and he refused. They attempted to take it to Niger, we have seen the results. It is currently in Germany I believe.

And know this: Germany till today is not yet independent from the USA.

Yes, as for cooperation that has always existed in many ways and through many agreements. In Ghana, in Nigeria, in many countries not only in Africa but all over the world.

The resistance of a government, when it comes to having a military base of a foreign power (and that of the most powerful country in the world for that matter) on your soil, is most reasonable. In most cases, it transforms your country instantly into not just a client state, but a virtual colony. And in this, try not to compare Nigeria and Ghana. There are significant differences in terms of size, economy and international importance. A Nigerian president, be he Christian, Muslim or even animistic, must be watchful on account of the sheer size of Nigeria. At 230 million people we are circa 2/3rds of the population of the entire USA, with circa the size of Texas. We cannot, and should not be bullied. The idea that the USA should place a massive military base on our soil is extremely misguided. Military cooperation and intelligence sharing is enough.

You can pass a bar exam if you have the minimum intelligence to grasp some issues and retain them in your head for a while. Many however, pass it after several attempts. Your comments about the debt burden Nigeria has incurred with China are cause for worry, concerning how that indebtedness will be discharged if Nigeria falls behind in its repayment schedule, given the loan shark extortionate clauses typically buried deep in the contract documents signed by Nigeria and China.

When it comes to the question of whether Tinubu's acceptance of American and European military assistance was a decision made of his own free will, as opposed to having been made under duress, I would say that the end justifies the means, in that regardless of how such an urgently needed Nigerian and American military cooperation pact came about, it is an alliance that is both positive and timely, which came to fruition during the presidency of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
+
One more thing to add. The record of France in particular, in "fighting terrorism" in the Sahelian states, is enough to rest this matter.

Politics › Re: Temporary Suspending My Support For This Government by DeepSight(m): 10:41am On Dec 07, 2025
Jakumo:
Deep Sight you speak the truth about the nosedive of Nigeria's economy that is traceable to the abrupt removal of subsidies by the incoming administration. The subsequent precipitous devaluation of the naira alone has wrought devastation to the hard-currency worth of any asset held in Nigeria. On a personal finance level as one with modest investments in Nigeria, I suffered as a direct result oft he aforementioned economic policies that are yet to yield tangible benefits.

Despite my gripes about economic matters in Nigeria, I remain keenly aware that it is only when there is peace, with safe roads, cities and towns, that the citizens of any nation can enjoy the luxury of indulging in economic analysis. Right up until the point at which the Bola Tinubu government formally announced its strategically brilliant military alliance with the USA, Britain and France, I had been consumed with a gnawing sense unease with each new report indicating that terrorist slave-raids were occurring much deeper into the previously stable south of the nation, than at any time since the Islamist invasion kicked off in 2009.

Former Edo State Governor Oshiomole is among several Nigeria's of note who recently again raised the alarm about illegal Chinese gold, tantalite, and lithium miners operating in northern Nigerian Nasarawa and Gombe States, where low-flying helicopters ferry in arms for freelance Islamist gunmen to use against villagers living in the vicinity of areas where precious metals abound. Bola Tinubu's REFUSAL to choose China as a military partner in Nigeria's escalating war against terrorist slave-raiders can only therefore be described as a political masterstroke, given the conflict of interest that China has all over Africa, a land of bounteous natural resources.

Russian troops from the Wagner Group have earned a reputation for frequent massacres in all African countries where they were invited to intervene, from the Central African Republic to Mali. By steering well clear of Mad Vlad Putin's henchmen in Africa even in this Nigeria's desperate hour of need, Bola Tinubu again displayed a keen understanding of contemporary geopolitics. Putin, who has thus far in 2025 presided over the death of a million of his own Russian soldiers in his futile land-grab war in Ukraine, is NOT the sort of person whose offer of military assistance is worthy of consideration even for a second by any well-informed and wise African leader.

In short, Bola Ahmed Tinubu is my nomination for Africa's Man of the Year 2026. No shaking. We dey follow am for back.
+
Well you are entitled to your opinion, which I dont share. One thing is clear: BAT made no such "masterstroke" stance against China in anyway shape or form: if he had, the Chinese would not still be ripping up our mines (several of which I have been too over legal issues) till date. Neither would several billion dollar Chinese financing deals still be in the pipeline and on the way which far exceed any amount of Western financial aid. So please, let us tone down on attributing genius to Napoleon. I quote from George Orwell's "Animal Farm" - as follows -

"The pigs were in ecstasies over Napoleon's cunning. By seeming to be friendly with Pilkington he had forced Frederick to raise his price by twelve pounds. But the superior quality of Napoleon's mind, said Squealer, was shown in the fact that he trusted nobody, not even Frederick. Frederick had wanted to pay for the timber with something called a cheque, which, it seemed, was a piece of paper with a promise to pay written upon it. But Napoleon was too clever for him. He had demanded payment in real five-pound notes, which were to be handed over before the timber was removed. Already Frederick had paid up; and the sum he had paid was just enough to buy the machinery for the windmill."

Let me add that the said bank notes turned out to be fake.

It seems to me, that just like the pigs (the governing class in the book) you are currently "in ecstasies over Napoleon's cunning." Try to temper the ecstasy because it has already led you into praising Napoleon for things he most certainly has not done.

And still, for the life of me, I cannot comprehend why you say that Bola announced his "strategically brilliant military alliance with the USA, Britain and France" - repeatedly attempting to ignore the fact that you know that alliance was forced on him, stampeded indeed, with threats and insults of the highest order. Jaks, you are not addressing children. How can it be that these forced actions followed with threats of invasion are what you reserve to be for the credit and genius of Bola? Its just amazing that you can say that.

However, you are entitled to your opinion and do know that my great love of you will persist always.

As a person who has never cast a vote in any election anywhere on earth since the day I was born, and who cannot therefore lay claim to any political affiliation, a personal appraisal of any government running a given nation can best be informed by the two key indexes of civilized life and peaceful existence, namely security, and the economy.

In fairness to the currently elected federal government administering the Nigerian nation's affairs today as the year 2025 gives way to 2026, long festering security challenges, in concert with a global economic post-COVID recession, added up to enormous challenges that don't lend themselves to speedy resolution.

Now that the might of the US military is confirmed to be operating collaboratively to battle Nigeria's terror invasion alongside with France, the UK and other well-meaning nations, even the most jaded observer can rest assured that by officially teaming up with the militaries of the democratic West, the government of Bola Ahmed Tinubu is FINALLY acting with the urgency necessitated by the rapidly spreading bloodstain of terror in Nigeria.

"Better late than never", as old saying goes. As a Muslim president of a secular democracy already under silent diplomatic pressure from Red China and Russian tyrant-warlord Putin to lean the wrong way, Bola Tinubu wisely took his time to consult, confer, and consider before doing the RIGHT thing, by allowing Uncle Sam to send a few of the toys in his inventory of ground-attack drones, with no strings attached besides perhaps favorable pricing for Nigeria's crude oil exports, after the smoke clears, when the last Islamist terrorist has either fled back to Mali, or has been recycled into organic agricultural fertilizer by millimeter-precise drone strikes.

All things considered, this one-time neutral political fence-sitter is now a die-hard Bola Tinubu supporter who is thankful that Tinubu recognized the enormity of the challenge posed to Nigeria by well-funded Islamist slave-raiding hordes, before acting swiftly and in good faith to accept offers of military assistance from the USA, France and the UK, rather than from any of the usual suspects featured in our planet's despot rogues gallery, who ALL harbor dark ulterior motives with genocidal implications, for Africa.

1. You speak as though Bola acted decisively, wisely and altruistically when even you know that whatever he is doing in the last few weeks is as a direct result of the fear and pressure Trump subjected him to. How does that make him a wise leader and convert you to a die hard fan? So you are converted when your leader is literarily forced, bullied, insulted and threated into action by a foreign power - a power who he knows has the capacity to unseat him? That is what impresses you? That is what converts you into a die hard fan?

+2. Nigeria is not a secular state, it only claims to be. No secular state has religious based criminal laws such as Sharia.

+3. In the red part of your post you surprisingly try to attribute the economic failure of this government to Covid and even global recession. Uncle Jaks, not even you can wish away the hasty and ill considered way in which subsidies were removed in a single day and the naira floated shortly thereafter, a combination with such bad timing especially in terms of proximity to one another that would crash any economy in a blink. How could you for heavens sake, even if you agree with those policies or the manner of their implementation, ignore them, only to reach for Covid and global recession as excuses?

Kukutente23:
I understand very well your point. But psychological and emotional maturity does not have anything to do with age as well. I have a friend who began taking responsibility for his younger siblings when they became orphans when he was in secondary school. Due to poverty and the wicked (if I can say) disposition of relatives, he took over his mother's trading (dangerous as it was) and he began fending and taking care of his younger ones. This delayed his own education though. The point I'm making is that emotional and psychological maturity are not mechanical as well. We have fools at 40!!

You seem fixated on making it a case of sex exploitation. But I'm looking at the wider view. Indulge me pls. I'm trying to connect how the lady and the boy got to the point where they started having sex. Don't forget this is Africa where the system is not as permissive as the West.

I've read most stories like this in the West and it's usually easy to see where contact occurs. The teacher sees the physical attributes of a male student and then goes close to him, inviting him to her house for one thing or the other, attending parties he's billed to attend etc. Those kinds of situations simply don't exist here. The gap between strident and teacher is very wide to leave room for such exploitation.

I suspect the teacher got wind of the guy's sexual prowess and instead of taking action by exposing him and getting help for him, she decided to take a piece of the pie. My point is she couldn't have groomed him because the conditions for such to occur are far limited in our social setting. If she wasn't privy to his sexual ability, I doubt she would have made a move on him.

Also, what if he set off his sexual journey by engaging prostitutes. I hope you're aware prostitutes especially in Africa will be least concerned about a customer's age. I have firsthand knowledge of this when growing up. In such circumstance, is the prostitute the one coercing or using power or is ur the other way round?

I just want us to have a clear understanding not condoning the behaviour here. I'm strictly against child abuse of any form.
+
To add, 99 per cent of boys of that age will cherish the experience forever as a badge of honour.

Not condoning it oh.
