50k is a lot of money but certainly, it is up to the owner to spend it however they please.

Someone said earlier that they would never spend that kind of money to watch Anita Baker but they would rather watch Eminem (for the same amount) in concert. I think that is stupid because I hate Eminem but who am I to say how or where they should spend their hard earned (or otherwise) money?

Because one spends money on things that may seem trivial to others doesnt justify the "Nigeria is a third world nation and hence you should direct your money towards other goals" speech that is always and endlessly thrown in their faces.
True.

Lagos CP gets kudos for testimony
Tuesday, September 9, 2008

The testimony of Lagos State Police Commissioner, Mr Marvel Akpoyibo about his sojourn in the occult world before turning his life to God has provoked kudos from a cross section of Nigerians.

https://odili.net/news/source/2008/sep/9/sun/qq.jpg
Mr Marvel Akpoyibo

At the 6th edition of Breeding Leadership and National Transformation (BLENT) organized by The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM) in Lagos on Sunday, Mr Akpoyibo had revealed how, as a young officer, he was persuaded to seek spiritual protection in order to survive in the Nigeria Police.

He underscored the futility in reliance on charms for protection, saying he never felt secured until he accepted God into his life.

The police commissioner said he was prompted to give the testimony to encourage others who still believed that other beings besides God could provide protection, to retrace their steps.

Mr Akpoyibo said he felt joy in the church after the revelation, seeing the crowd that came out to give their lives to Christ.

The police boss, described by many as a committed Christian, said God had been helping him tremendously in policing Lagos State.

His words: “When I was made the CP of Lagos, after I signed a hand over note, I told God I will not deliver the note until he signed his own column. I want you to help me police Lagos State.

“Before then, we were losing 10 policemen everyday, and 20 to 25 cars were being snatched everyday. But I handed over Lagos State to the almighty God and since then crime has reduced.”

Akpoyibo, while calling for prayers for the Nigeria Police, urged youths and those indulged in crime to turn their minds to God.

“There is no virtue in criminal activities and those who engage in it will never end well,” he said, “Read the Bible and learn new things everyday. It will change your life for the better and take you away from sins.”

A female gospel minister, Evangelist Chioma Adeoye was full of praises for Akpoyibo’s courageous efforts at putting the devil to shame, saying the police boss deserves commendation from the Police as well as from all patriotic Nigerians.

Said she: “I want to congratulate the Lagos State commissioner for putting Satan into shame. When I read the story, my blood ran hot. I advise junior ones that nobody can give anybody protection but God. Satan cannot give anything for free. I want to assure Nigerians that there are many police officers who have not sold their conscience. I urge them to keep it up. God will see them through. I pray that God would continue to lift Akpoyibo up ahead of his enemies.”

Pastor John Olaifa, a Lagos-based cleric, also commended the courage of the police boss.

He said: “It is a highly commendable effort. It is a demonstration of courage. What he has done is the final lap of restituštion. It is the kind of testimony that is lacking in the church today. Testimony should serve as a propeller for one still in such sin to come out of it. This is the type of testimony that the Bible states. I commend him for coming out of the occult, not just coming out he has come out to let the world know the futility and nothingness in it.”

The man of God believed that this “wonderful testimony will serve as tonic for those members of the police who are still reveling in cultism and other people to quit the fold. You see testimony in this country is basically on physical blessing. The hosts of heaven rejoice when there is a testimony of this nature.”

Cultism: Lagosians, police react to CP’s confession

By Kunle Adeyemi and Olalekan Adetayo

The confession on his past association credited to the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Mr. Marvel Akpoyibo, generated controversy in police formations both within and outside the state on Monday.

Akpoyibo was quoted by newspapers as recounting his experience as a former member of cult groups at a function organised by the Bishop Mike Okonkwo-led The Redeemed Evangelical Mission in Lagos on Sunday.

The police boss reportedly told the bewildered congregation details of his escapades in a bid to get ”power” that would aid the performance of his policing work.

In all the police formations visited by our correspondents within the state on Monday, including the command‘s GRA, Ikeja headquarters, comments on the media report were on the lips of every policeman.

THE PUNCH also learnt that the report caused a level of disquiet at the police headquarters in Abuja.

A police source said many senior police officers viewed the publication as unnecessarily portraying them as cultists.

Another source said Akpoyibo himself was not comfortable with the media attention given to ”what was just a testimony to the goodness of God” in his life.

A cross-section of policemen who spoke with our correspondents on the condition of anonymity, said the publication was capable of further dragging the name of the force in the mud.

But the command‘s spokesman, Mr. Frank Mba, said the comments made by Akpoyibo were not meant to cast aspersion on any group or individual and should not be misconstrued.

Mba, a deputy superintendent of police, said the message was meant to admonish the youth on the futility of seeking power in whatever form from occultic forces.

He said, ”I want Nigerians to know that the CP never made the comment to elicit negative reactions; he was in fact, making himself an example of what Godliness means in everybody‘s life.

”Particularly, he wanted police officers to know that the only source of guidance and protection they could have is from God and not any evil forces.

”We are all aware that policing a state like Lagos is not a tea party, hence the commissioner thinks that if the youth become more God-fearing, they will shun crime and the state will be the better for it.”

BusinessEtisalat Gives Nigerians Free Airtime For Life by DeepZone(op): 10:58pm On Sep 09, 2008
Etisalat gives Nigerians free airtime for life
By Efem Nkanga, 09.09.2008

Nigeria ’s fifth GSM mobile operator, Etisalat will today launch its commercial service, by giving Nigerians, an opportunity to own an exclusive Etisalat number as well as free airtime for life.

THISDAY gathered from the website of Etisalat that Nigerians will get the free airtime every month for as long as they have one chargeable event characterized by sending a text message or initiating a voice call every month.

The unique opportunity aptly tagged ‘’0809uchoose’’ gives Nigerians three avenues through which they can get an exclusive number for life. One is by registering online, dialling an 0809uchoose hotline or visiting any of the 0809uchoose mobile road show tents in selected cities in the country.

The 0809uchoose opportunity which gives Nigerians the chance to reserve their desired numbers at no cost whatsoever is however only available for a limited time. Etisalat, which got its license for 400 million US dollars is commencing commercial operations after unveiling its network to Nigerians a few months ago. Etisalat’s network will ride on the 0809 numbering series and will accommodate 10 million subscribers in the first instance.

The commercial roll out is coming after some delays, which THISDAY gathered was necessitated by the need by Etisalat to ensure the creation of a world class communications infrastructure that will not be bogged down by challenges characterized by poor quality of service that had been the lot of Nigerians of late.

Etisalat’s entrance into the nation's telecoms sector was the culmination of the bilateral agreement between Nigeria and the United Arab Emirate (UAE). Etisalat is expected to economically, technologically and socially transform the telecommunications landscape of the nation. The new network is expected to use the marketing strategy of a sound technological network with good service quality, reduced tariff to give other operators a run for their money and gain considerable market share from already established operators when it starts commercial service today. Etisalat is expected to make the kind of impact reminiscent of Globacom when it hit the nation’s telecoms sector by crashing the price of owning mobile lines and introducing the per second billing which was the first of its kind in the country as at then. Its entrance is expected to heat up the sector and enable renewed competition for the soul of Nigerian subscribers.

The Chief Executive Officer of Etisalat, Saoud Al Shamsi recently remarked that the sector will be energised by the activities of Etisalat. He stated that the company was taking its time to ensure that the Nigerian people get the kind of services they have never gotten before in the history of the sector. He disclosed that Etisalat will replicate the technologies it has pioneered in different markets across the globe in Nigeria . These technologies he reiterated including the 3.75G network which it rolled out in Egypt recently, fixed line services over its Next Generation Network, and a range of services including 3G, GPRS, Blackberry and MobileCam will open a new vista in the nation's telecoms terrain.

It will be recalled that in January last year EMTS, a Nigerian company, in partnership with Mudabala Development Company of UAE, acquired from the Federal government a Unified Access License that includes a mobile license and spectrum in the GSM 1800 and 900 MHz bands for $400 million. Etisalat is said to have acquired a 40 percent stake in EMTS to operate the license in Nigeria . It also competed with renowned telecoms firms like Vodafone to emerge as the preferred operator of the license in the country.

Etisalat is present in 15 countries, ten of them in Africa , the company which has demonstrated its capacity to thrive in difficult and challenging terrains and succeeded in building a network that spans the middle East, Africa and Asia.

EducationNigeria Attains 56% Literacy Level by DeepZone(op): 10:52pm On Sep 09, 2008
Nigeria attains 56% literacy level

Minister of State for Educa-tion, Dr Jerry Agada, yesterday said 56 per cent of Nigeria's 140 million people had attained literacy level.

"Statistics indicate that about 56 per cent of the country's population are now literate, this means that only 44 per cent are still illiterate," he said.

Agada said this while speaking at the re-launch of the Read Campaign at Garki Junior Secondary School, Abuja.

He said the campaign was introduced in May, in a bid to restore the culture of reading and writing among citizens, adding that the campaign yielded some tangible results, as many Nigerians had started adopting the culture of reading and writing.

"Where we are today is a lot better than where we were before and this means that we have been able to achieve a significant progress in our campaign," he said, and pledged government's support for the campaign, because of its importance to the attainment of the targets of Education For All (EFA) by 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the campaign's re-launch coincided with the International Literacy Day celebration, which was marked all over the world yesterday.

CultureMagun Hoax Sets Uyo On Fire by DeepZone(op): 10:49pm On Sep 09, 2008
How the story of magun set Uyo on fire
From JOE EFFIONG, Uyo
Tuesday, September 9, 2008

Uyo, the ever-busy Akwa Ibom State capital was made even busier on Tuesday, August 26, 2008 when the entire town was awash with a story that an illegal couple–a married woman and her boyfriend who were having sex in an uncompleted storey building were unable to disentangle after the act.

advertisement

The couple said to have been found about nine o’clock in the morning by the workers in the uncompleted building were said to have been permanently hooked to each other since the previous evening when the married woman sneaked into the building to have a quickie before rushing back home to her influential husband.

The story also had it that the husband, said to be a permanent secretary in one of the ministries in the state, had since suspected his wife to be a serial adulterer and had thus decided to lace her with the dreaded ekpo nka owo juju, the version that the Yoruba call magun.

As at when Daily Sun learnt of the incident by 3.30 pm and rushed to the scene which is between 111 and 113 Abak Road, the place had been taken over by okada riders, motorists and pedestrians all coming to see the hooked couple.

Daily Sun learnt that the police had on several occasions come to dispel the surging crowd which had taken over the building. Some young men even mounted sentry and collected N50 from each person who wanted to go in and see the show live. Daily Sun had to pay and rush in to take photographs before the twosome could suddenly disentangle to kill a possible front-page lead.

Surprisingly, there was no couple inside the two-storey building. Our correspondent searched every room pointing camera like American soldiers guns searching for Sadam Hussien with machine guns, yet no love-making couple was in sight.

It was only after Daily Sun had struggled to get out of the choking building and asked those doing business around the place that it was revealed that the whole drama was a hoax.

A lady who preferred anonymity but who works at Ablaze Pharmaceutical and Distribution Limited, 113 Abak Road, told Daily Sun that the whole drama was scripted and acted by okada riders for the public to go crazy.

The True Story

The lady however said that that morning, the security man at the uncompleted building was accosted by a lady who accused him of putting her in the family way. “She started dragging the man but he took her inside the building to leave the crowd which had started gathering. “We never knew how the story of man and woman who could not disentangle came about. But it is the product of okadamen,” she explained.

Another man selling motorcycles on the same premises confirmed what the lady said and wondered “why people would leave they business to waste their time on false rumours.”

Hard Sell

But the true story was very unpalatable to thousands of pilgrims who had turned the building into a big tourist attraction. Even those who had entered the house and come out, still behaved like the “good men” of the Ali and the Angel story. “Chei! I have never seen such a thing in my life. See a married woman disgracing herself, her family, and her husband. She is even a deaconess on one church there,” a young man who came down from the building about 10 minutes after Daily Sun had done a painstaking search, exclaimed.

With such exclamation, others who had wanted to listen to the true story rushed and paid the gate money and went upstairs only to come down garnishing the rumour with different species of spices to make the crowd go wild with ecstasy.

The South South bureau chief of Champion Newspapers, Tony Etim, even called from Port Harcourt same day to confirm the story from Daily Sun. He was shocked when told that it was just a hoax. How news flies!

To make the story even richer, the rumour mongers later in the evening said the police had carried the fornicators (or is it adulterers?) away to the hospital. But which hospital? Nobody could tell. Some said the police had arrested them and were at the state police headquarters at Ikot Akpan Abia.

But the police public relations officer, Akwa Ibom State command, Mr Gabriel Ngban, said there was nothing like that. “I heard the story just like that. But there was nothing like that. We never arrested anybody. Don’t mind them.”

An earlier hoax

False but palatable rumour-mongering appears to have become a pastime in Uyo. Two months ago, the city was turned upside down when the “local radio” which Uyo okadamen have turned into, broadcast that the corpse of an old woman deposited at a mortuary along Atiku Abubakar Avenue, Uyo, had turned into a large fish when the children came to remove it for burial.

For two days, passing through that road became a nightmare. All efforts by the police to dispel the mob proved abortive. People were ready to swear by the grave of their great grand fathers that they saw when the corpse transformed into a fish.

It was only after a week that the true story was revealed that the fish, rare specie was taken to the mortuary by a private fish farm called Little Spring Farm Ltd to avoid its decay since it was brought to the farm already dead, but for research purpose.

It was when the fish was being brought that the okadamen saw it and went to town with the woman-turned-into-fish story.

The state police commissioner, Mr Mike Zuokumor said there was nothing the police could do to stop hoaxes from being spread in Uyo. “We don’t have any law to charge them with. We can only help to dispel the crowd. It only becomes a crime if they use the occasion to extort money from people like fraudulently collecting gate fees from people.”

Well, with Uyo lacking recreation facilities, maybe, such hoaxes have come in handy as comic relief. Up okadamen!

Igbos never ruin the country at any point in time. We have contributed more to the development of nigeria more than any other ethnic group. Igbos are the MOST complete nigerians (detrabalized) compare to others and the fact is backed up by the real FACT that we are the second largest ethnic group in all states of nigeria apart from Igbo states. During the time you mentioned, the country was on it's way to economic self reliance. In fact, it was the fear of Igbo dominance which started then and culminated into the backlash against Igbo by other nigerians, your ethnic group included, but spearheaded by the hausa/fulani. I still maintain that the fear of Igbo by you nigerians is the downfall of your country. Deep inside you, you already know that this is a fact, but shame will not let you to admit it openly.

Ohh, you should know the reason is because of the fear and the need to curtail the continued rise of the Igbos and their dominance in all spheres of life in nigeria coupled with the fear of igbo revenge of all the attrocities that was visited on them by other nigerians. Don't be surprised that other nigerians also share the same fear and sentiment with the hausa/fulanis. Tpia and his ethnic group are not alone in this fear of the Igbos.

Seriously, what is the difference between this dance and what some women do while walking down the road almost bare chested? The west will always have their way with us. I'll only turn against it if they were forced to do so. They did the same with muslims only to withdraw after seen seeing some o their women dress the same way in the western world. If we preach freedom, we should not impose our cultural values and religious principles on others because they chose to live in a particular way. These girls are even clothed to an extent as opposed to strip girls that walk around naked. Some American movie stars(excluding the porn stars) must either show part or their full naked body in any movie as long as the price is right. What is good for the goose should also be good for the gander.

God has seen you struggling,

God says it’s over.

A blessing is coming your way.

If you believe in God send this to ten people.

Don't ignore, you’re being tested.

'Lord, whatever you are doing in this season,

please don't do it without me!'

This one is definitely between you and God. Don't disappoint. Read to the end.

GOD: Angels, do you know what I was just thinking about?

ANGELS: What were you thinking about?

GOD: Christians seem to have forgotten what kind of power they have available and the devil keeps on deceiving them!

ANGELS: God, exactly what are you driving at?

GOD: I have made my children in such a way that when the people of the world are sitting, they would be standing, when the world is standing, they will stand out, when the world stands out, my children must be outstanding and when the devil dares the world to be outstanding, my people will be the standards to be used!

JESUS CHRIST: They (Christians) are also forgetting the words in Ephesians 1:3.

GOD: Please read it out!

ANGEL: PRAISE BE TO THE GOD AND FATHER OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST , WHO HAS BLESSED US IN THE HEAVENLY PLACES WITH EVERY SPIRITUAL BLESSING IN CHRIST .

ANGEL: So what do we do now since the end is almost near?

HOLY SPIRIT: My Presence is still among men and I will teach and remind the Christians of all that we have discussed. I will also make sure that they pass this message on!

JESUS CHRIST: I will also keep on interceding for them & stand in for them even in their weaknesses.

GOD:
I will also make sure that I give to all those who ask of me, seek me and try to find me . The blessings I have promised them through My Son, Jesus Christ will be delivered to all those who discover that I, Jehovah, am ready to bless them! Not because of any special things that they have done, but just because I LOVE THEM !

JESUS CHRIST: I will also give all My followers who are willing to pass this conversation on, enough strength to carry on!

ANGELS: We are all backing THE TRINITY and even the devil cannot stop us! How funny! Christians are finally taking over and ,

'A Godly Example Is Worth More Than A Thousand Words'

DEVIL (eavesdropping behind the gates): I hope you all heard! I will deploy more troops (demons) and make sure the Christians pray less, read their Bibles less, preach less and
make sure this mail does not move anywhere! Also,

YOU SURE HEARD THAT! THE DEVIL WILL MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT PASS THIS ON BUT PROVE HIM WRONG AND SHOW HIM THE POWER YOU HAVE IN CHRIST JESUS AS A CHRISTIAN. PRAY MORE, STUDY THE WORD MORE AND PREACH THE WORD! DO NOT DISAPPOINT GOD ! PASS IT ON!
People generate emails like this one above and request you to pass them on. It's a good thing but some of them come with a threatening message that if you refuse to pass it on, your blessings or something bad will come upon you. How do you deal with these emails?
