Alleged fraud: Court asks Jonathan’s cousin to enter defence Posted By: Eric Ikhilae, Abuja On: March 29, 2018 A Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday granted in part, the no-case submission made by a cousin to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Robert Azibaola, his wife, Stella and their company – One Plus Holdings Nigeria Limited – in their trial for allegedly receiving $40million fraudulently from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) in 2014. Justice Nnamdi Dimgba upheld the no-case submission in seven of the nine- count charge contained in the amended charge and struck out Stella’s name from the charges after discharging her. The affected counts are 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. In striking out the seven counts, the judge said there was no sufficient evidence to warrant the call for the defendants to enter defence in relation to the charges. The judge retained two counts – 2 and 3 on the grounds that the prosecution had sufficient evidence linking Azibaola and the company to the charges, but failed to connect the wife to them. The judge said: “On the strength of the evidence adduced, I see no sufficient evidence linking the 2nd defendant (Stella) to counts 2 and 3. I therefore accordingly discharge and acquit the 2nd defendant of counts 2 and 3. “I hold that there is sufficient prima facie case against the 1st and the 3rd defendants. The no case-submission on these counts failed in relation to them and I therefore accordingly direct the 1st and 3rd defendants (Azibaola and One Plus) to open their defence to counts 2 and 3.” According to the prosecution, count 2 has to do with the defendants “directly taking possession or control of $39,999,958, which they received from the NSA office as allegedly instructed by the then NSA, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd). While in count 3, the defendants were accused of directly converting the said funds to their personal use. http://thenationonlineng.net/alleged-fraud-court-asks-jonathans-cousin-enter-defence/

Nigeria Moved From 169 To 145 On EU Trade Ranking - EU Trade Rep. Mr. Ibi Ikpoki of the European Union trade delegation said Nigeria has moved 24 places upward on the union’s ranking of trade strength of countries. He spoke at the ongoing on-going 4th International Agro-Food Fair, taking place in Lagos. The EU Trade delegate said that total EU trade in Nigeria increased by 27 percent from 19.9 billion Euros in 2016 to 25.3 billion Euros in 2017. BY SAHARAREPORTERS, NEW YORK MAR 28, 2018 Mr. He said “This trade increase mirrors the improvements in Nigeria’s external trade as a country that exited recession in 2017. Permit me to use this opportunity to congratulate the Nigerian authorities for some notable feats experienced in 2017, including the improvement in ease of doing business. On ranking, we saw Nigeria jump 24 places from 169 to 145 and also emerged one of the topmost improved 10 countries.” He also appreciated the efforts of the Nigerian government to develop agriculture sector and how the sector has played a huge role in the country’s exit from recession. Mr. Ikpoki said “The Nigerian agricultural sector has also played a crucial role in job creation, women, and youth empowerment and contributed immensely to poverty alleviation. Therefore, I am delighted today that agriculture in Nigeria is gradually evolving from being seen as a mere activity to a business, moving primary production to value addition. This is why this annual exhibition continues to be relevant for the development of the agro-business and packaging sectors among others.” The Agrofood fair is holding for the fourth time in Nigeria with over 80 exhibitors from countries like China, Turkey and some Nigerian agriculture entrepreneurs displaying their products at the fair. http://saharareporters.com/2018/03/28/nigeria-moved-169-145-eu-trade-ranking-eu-trade-rep

RMAFC: Each senator collects N1.6m monthly salary – aside N13.5m running cost March 28, 2018 The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) says each senator collects salary and allowances of N1.6 million every month. Ibrahim Mohammed, head of public relations at RMAFC, said this in a statement issued on Wednesday. He said the N1.06 million figure consists of: basic-N168,866, fueling and maintenance of vehicles, N126,650; personal assistant N42,216. Domestic Staff, N126,650, entertainment, N50,660, utilities,newspapers/periodicals, N25,330, wardrobe, N42,216, house maintenance, N8,443 and constituency, N422,166 respectively. Mohammed said the remuneration act only covers salary and allowances but not running cost. He said only the management of the National Assembly Service Commission could explain the N13.5 million running cost of each senator. Mohammed explained that the clarification became imperative in view of the recent revelation by Shehu Sani, senator representing Kaduna central, who disclosed that each senator collects monthly running cost of N13.5 million. Sani had said that this was in addition to the monthly salary of N750, 000 prescribed by the “Certain Political, Public and Judicial Office Holders (Salaries and Allowances, etc.) (Amendments) Act 2008.” Mohammed said some allowances were regular, while others were non-regular. “Regular allowances are paid regularly with basic salaries, while non-regular allowances are paid when due,” he said. “For instance, furniture allowance of N6.079 million and severance gratuity of N6.079 million are paid once every tenure, while motor vehicle loan of N8.1 million is optional which the beneficiary has to offset before leaving office. “The payment of running cost is not part of RMAFC mandate, therefore, only the National Assembly can explain it.” According to Mohammed, the law on salaries and allowances of public office holders is very clear. Mohammed also said auditing does not fall within the purview of the commission. He said any other payments being enjoyed by any political or public office holder outside those provided in the Remuneration Act of 2008 were not known to the commission. He added that the chief accounting officers of the agencies concerned should explain such payments. Mohammed advised that Nigerians to avoid misinformation and misrepresentation of facts capable of misleading citizens and members of the international community. https://www.thecable.ng/rmafc-senator-collects-n1-6m-monthly-salary-aside-n13-5m-running-cost

FG to PDP: Your apology not enough until you return looted funds MARCH 27, 2018 BY Emmanuel Elebeke ABUJA – The Federal Government has asked the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to go the whole hog with its apology to Nigerians by returning all the funds looted from the public treasury under its watch during its 16 years in power. Secondus: We are sorry In a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, also challenged the party to show the genuineness of its apology through a discernible change of attitude. He said , ”The PDP presided over an unprecedented looting of the public treasury, perhaps the worst of its kind in Nigeria or anywhere else in the world. Therefore, the best evidence of penitence for such a party is not just to own up and apologize, but to also return the looted funds. Anything short of that is mere deceit. ”Even with the paucity of funds, this Administration has spent an unprecedented amount of money on infrastructural development and Social Investment Programme, among others. Returning looted funds will provide more money for these programmes and make life more meaningful for Nigerians. There is no better apology than that.” Alhaji Mohammed also reminded the PDP of the quote: ”If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging,” saying it applies to the PDP at this time. ”PDP, press the reset button. Stop sabotaging the work of this Administration, which is packing the mess you left behind, through your reckless statements and unfounded allegations. Play responsible opposition politics. Put Nigeria’s interest over and above partisan interest. Temper your desperation to return to power. Spend quality time in the purgatory and you will be forgiven,” he added. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/03/963235/

Don’t vote Buhari out, Martin Luther King’s Jrn family charges Nigerians ON MARCH 27, 2018 Martin Luther King Jr’s nephew, Isaac newton-Farris Jnr, has enjoined Nigerians to unite and join hands with President Muhammadu Buhari to complete the work he begun in setting Nigeria on the right path and building a country every Nigerian would be proud of. Farris made the call in an interview with newsmen in Abuja after a get together in honour of the visiting Luther family who are in Nigeria. The luncheon was organised by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Mrs Abike Dabiri- Erewa to mark the first Black History Month in Nigeria. President Muhammadu Buhari receives a plague from Ambassador Erika Bennett and other members of African-American Human Activist Late Martin Luther Jnr during the conferment of The First Black History Month National Black Excellence and Exceptional African Leadership Award 2018 at the Council Chambers in Abuja. “My advice to Nigeria is this., I know that a lot of Nigerians feel a little displeasure with President Buhari moving too slow on some of his reforms. “I will counsel Nigerians to say give this man the time he needs to do the job that he is doing. He is one of the most legitimate leaders that the continent has produced. “And he would if you all just stick to him I assure you he is going to make Nigeria a better place,” he said. He said that though it was not easy to say as a visitor but Nigerian would benefit if they supported him to complete his work According to him, I know for instance what your citizens will say to me, he will identify the corruption but won’t do anything, he says until investigation is done. But that is the proper way to do that. “You know fortunately he is an honest man but if he would say traditional just decide in his mind what is corrupt and not corrupt and just taking action without a process what will happen with the next guy that comes who might not be as honest as he is. “So you need a process. So it is not about the person or personality but it is about the fact. “So I will just counsel Nigerians, I know, I am a visitor it is really not my business but be careful before you vote this man out of office,” he said. The Most oldest person in the Luther family, Dr Naomi King, earlier called on Nigerians to rise up to their responsibility and vote for the candidate of their choice “I want you to take the responsibility and vote when the time comes for the candidate of your choice because you have a voice and your vote is your voice. “Remember that if you love God, you love your neighbour and have in mind what the almighty God has done He will give you the desire of your heart,” she said. Also speaking, Dabiri- Erewa , said the Luther family was in Nigeria to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the death of Martin Luther King jnr “As they celebrate the 50th anniversary in Nigeria which is the first of its kind, we want Africans in the diaspora and Africa to work together for the development of the continent. “So it is a major step forward, it is our desire to work with our sisters and brothers of African descent to move the continent forward,” she said Dabiri-Erewa said that their coming to celebrate in Nigeria showed their belief in the country and the leadership quality in Nigeria According to her, the visitors appreciated what Buhari was doing especially in tackling corruption. yemaldo:This is not even about Tinubu. It is about doing the right thing, otherwise APC will go the way of PDP. Remember that it is also the same Tinubu that insist that Buhari must go for primary elections when some Governors led by El Rufai were singing automatic ticket for the President. This is about laying a solid foundation and doing the right thing. Cutting corners, sometimes makes the journey longer.. Short cuts only leads to short gains. |
