Dave- Black

Serving as the first solo track on his Psycho Drama debut album (2019), Dave dedicates nonstop refreshingly thought provoking vibes on the struggles and beauty of being African across the world.

Verse

Look, black is beautiful, black is excellent
Black is pain, black is joy, black is evident
It's workin' twice as hard as the people you know you're better than
'Cause you need to do double what they do so you can level them
Black is so much deeper than just African-American
Our heritage been severed, you never got to experiment
With family trees, 'cause they teach you 'bout famine and greed
And show you pictures of our fam on their knees
Tell us we used to be barbaric, we had actual queens
Black is watchin' child soldiers gettin' killed by other children
Feelin' sick, like, "Oh shit, this could have happened to me"
Your mummy watchin' tellin' stories 'bout your dad and your niece
The blacker the berry the sweeter the juice
A kid dies, the blacker the killer, the sweeter the news
And if he's white you give him a chance, he's ill and confused
If he's black he's probably armed, you see him and shoot
Look, black is growin' up around the barbershop
Mummy sayin', "Stay away from trouble, you're in yard a lot"
Studying for ages, appreciatin' the chance you got
'Cause black is in your blood, and you ain't even got the heart to stop
Black is steppin' in for your mother because your father's gone
And standin' by your children when you haven't proven karma wrong
Black is doin' all of the above then goin' corner shoppin'
Tryna help a lady cross the road to have her walkin' off
Black is growin' up around your family and makin' it
Then being forced to leave the place you love because there's hate in it
People say you fake the shit, never stayed to change the shit
But black is bein' jealous, you'd be dead if you had stayed in it
Black is strugglin' to find your history or trace the shit
You don't know the truth about your race 'cause they erasin' it
Black has got a sour fuckin' flavour, here's a taste of it
But black is all I know, there ain't a thing that I would change in it
Look, black ain't just a single fuckin' colour, man there's shades to it
Her hair's straight and thick but mine's got waves in it
Black is not divisive, they been lyin' and I hate the shit
Black has never been a competition, we don't make this shit
Black is deadly
Black is when you're freezin' in your home and you can't get sleep but never feelin' empty
'Cause you got 20 cousins in your country living stress-free
Walkin' for their water, daughter wrapped inside a bed sheet
Black is distant
It's representin' countries that never even existed while your grandmother was livin'
Black is my Ghanaian brother readin' into scriptures
Doin' research on his lineage, findin' out that he's Egyptian
Black is people namin' your countries on what they trade most
Coast of Ivory, Gold Coast, and the Grain Coast
But most importantly to show how deep all this pain goes
West Africa, Benin, they called it slave coast
Black is so confusin', 'cause the culture? They're in love with it
They take our features when they want and have their fun with it
Never seem to help with all the things we know would come with it
Loud in our laughter, silent in our sufferin'
Black is bein' strong inside and facing defeat
Poverty made me a beast, I battled the law in the streets
We all struggled, but your struggle ain't a struggle like me
Well how could it be when your people gave us the odds that we beat?
I mean, fuckin' hell, what about our brothers that are stuck in jail?
That couldn't bust a bell, they held a bird and gotta live with it
Black is bein' guilty until proven that you're innocent
Black is sayin', "Free my fucking niggas stuck inside in prison cells"
They think it's funny, we ain't got nothin' to say to them
Unconditional love is strange to them; it's amazin' 'em
Black is like the sweetest fuckin' flavour, here's a taste of it
But black is all I know, there ain't a thing that I would change in it

Music/RadioPlug's Jam Of The Week by DejiPlug(op): 9:28am On Oct 08, 2019
Eventually replying his erring junior colleague and subsequently creating a general buzz across the music scene, Nigeria's Chairman of the rap game MI embarks on a no holds barred Maturity check against Vector in this return- diss track titled Viper. With every punchline designed to throw Vector into a mood, MI casually reminds Nigerians, and maybe Africa why he's the Rap Marshall.

http://www.naijapals.com/music/Viper__Vector_Diss__M_I_Abaga-103467

[Verse 1: M.I Abaga]
And so the Viper wants to war with me
My OG called and said “yo M.I?don’t?reward him B
Remember,?building bridges been our priority
Remember who?you are Juddah promise me.”
So I swore by my name cause there is no higher authority
I will not destroy you instead I give you maturity
Your soul is unclean, your heart is full of impurity and
Jealousy, jealousy nigga jealousy ahh!
This isn’t a diss, this is truth listen
This is wisdom I’m giving to you cause you my youth
You can never battle Jude your default setting is lose
That’s why I choose when you raise the alarm
To hit that snooze, you’ve always hated me
Your very first liner, your first single showed how you rated me
But Lanre see, I’ve always rated you
You no be mate to me tho
You should look up to me like your pàle
I’m happy my son is taller
Doesn’t mean you won’t dobale, chale

You had a jealous heart since you was a child
That why everybody who loves you ends up used and defiled
But yous in denial, blaming everyone but yourself
Already fake when no one knew you
And then famed it in hell
Look how you treated YSG
When them niggas really believed in you
Fucking snake, always bite the hand of people feeding you
AQ was your guy you did nothing to blossom no
But since he’s been around me, that nigga’s been doing awesome
Your manager and cousin gave you all cause he believed
When you got arrested he sat in jail with you and wouldn’t leave
But as you head dey hot, got rid of nigga just like a weave
And he still put you on his CV we gave him a job at CC
See we rise by lifting others who you lifted?
Nobody in all these years can say that Vector put em in position wow
You sinned against the order of heaven
That’s why the God has brought you to me
To be reborn and forgiven my nigga
Let’s, pray

[Verse 2: M.I Abaga]
I swear by my name cause there is no higher authority
I will not destroy you instead I give you maturity
I’m tryna save your life Lanre, that’s my priority
You let, jealousy jealousy Bleep your legacy up, yeah
This isn’t a diss, this is compassion
This is papa talking to you instead of giving you lashing
I know your fans are gonna demand that you revenge
But will they crowdfund for you, when It’s time to pay your rent
I’m willing and able, I’ll put 20 million on the table
That’s budget for you to spend and CC will float you label
Swallow your pride, let me show you how to be king
You came with chickens to my spot but didn’t buy chicken wings
Let your niggas fly, it’s my spot, y’all can eat free food
Shebi you waited for my reply so let me CC you
You have a choice, take my hand and let me free you
I heard you’re roasting in your girl’s place you B’s BQ
You’re not even top 5 from Yorubaland
Mode, Eldee, Bahdo, Dagrin, Remi, YCEE and Falz omo see the queue
When I’m the GOAT so tell me what I gain if me beat you?
I rather me teach you, so you can reach
Nah that will never happen

So when you old your children ask you what happened?
Cause people laughing just tell em daddy was jealous while rapping
Daddy was jealous from birth, was jealous inside the scrotum
Was jealously looking at other sperm cells
Wishing you choke me
Daddy was jealous of your mother and that’s how I bleeped myself
Daddy was jealous of MI damn, I should’ve stopped myself
One day on stage and daddy started blabbing
The reason why is when MI and I would fly together we’d sit in different cabins
When daddy saw MI’s cypher and jealousy got the best of him
MI was telling Hennessy, pay the rappers who’re rapping
But daddy thought it was about him and tried to send him a message
Then MI taught dad a lesson and MI made full confessions
Then daddy stopped being jealous and daddy became a blessing
Daddy said “yeah, Teeto and Boogey were disrespected.”
And daddy’s daddy MI said “son, your gift is special
Remember just don’t be jealous cause God wants you to be a vessel
My son” [Clears throat]

You mean, all this noise and seizures
Is because you didn’t get a feature? damn
I’m always helping people shine
You got the same platform
Worry bout yours not about mine, my nigga damn
I still love you like a son
So I promise that you can diss me how you want I won’t respond, to you
But after dropping your diss track
I hope you sit and listen back to everything that MI spat
Because it’s true
It’s better to give than to receive
And so I’m giving you for free
A gift and between you and me
You know I’m right (‘m right)
So give them all they want to see
Get all your memes and your retweets
But just don’t only win the beef, win in life
You called me short man at the Headies
And I could’ve been real petty
But my head is always heavy from the crown
Choc City want in doing biz
And my shares can help you feed your kids
When you sign I built that from the ground
You came and drank at the place I own
I’m tryna help you get your own Lanre
I represent a higher power
I represent the voice of God to you
(focus)

[Outro: M.I Abaga]
So all these years you ain’t helped one person
You ain’t put one person one person on
You ain’t sign nobody
There’s no manager, no artist, no fashion designer
Nobody connected to you doing well
It’s cause your heart is fucking bitter
Psalms 1, go read Psalms 1 bro
If you were right, you’d blossom and the people around you would be blessed

My brother knack am, knack am
Make we dey go, I no wan… see
This has to be the only one
Knack this guy, I dey feel am, knack am

PoliticsTrailblazer Wofai Samuel Shines At Hero Awards 2019 by DejiPlug(op): 11:50am On Oct 04, 2019
Renowned for chairing bilateral meetings that concerns African Development (Nigeria especially), within and outside Africa, delectable broadcaster turn social trailblazer, Wofai Samuel was recently honored at the Heroes Achievers Awards alongside prominent pacesetters, where she was duly presented the coveted award for International Personality of the Year due to outstanding activities in pursuit of national progress and quizzed over the nation's socio- economic stance internationally

Having thanked the organization for the special acknowledgement, Wofai dedicated her award to the One African Network before delivering a concise speech about the fate of Nigerians in the diaspora especially those in South Africa and the United States, which ultimately earned her resonding applause from the elitist crowd gathered to celebrate the national Heroes. When asked about the xenophobic attacks in South Africa, Wofai calmly stated that:“The attack on Nigerians and other black nationals’ in South Africa, is a clear pointer to the accumulation of a failed leadership system in these regions, Nigeria inclusive. The leadership of Nigeria and South Africa have a pivotal role to play on the continent especially on primary issues of Economic Integration, considering both countries are major economic players in Africa and Xenophobia has marred to a large extent this economic relationship".

Wofai rounded up by decrying the American President Trump's comment on Nigerians not wanting to return home, citing it as demeaning but with elements of truth while She graciously assessed interesting angles the POTUS might be speaking from and that culminated in a another hail of applause and standing ovation before the event further progressed without hitch till the end

Read her full Speech here about Nigerians in Xenophobia and American...

South Africa as well as it’s Nigeria Counterpart are major economic players in Africa and Xenophobia has marred to a large extent this economic relationship.
Statistics have shown that about 21,000 Nigerians inhabited South Africa in 2011 with an increase to about 30,000 in 2016, I am not sure of the 2019 figures, she added.
These numbers are way below black nationals from their southern African counterparts, Eastern Africa or even Central Africa.

The narrative of Nigerians seeking to be treated with premium as a result of their contribution to the struggle for majority rule in South Africa is unrealistic as there are no similar expectations from the other countries that supported South Africa’s liberation struggle.

While the response from the Nigerian Government and people is commendable, it is imperative to review the stimulants of xenophobic attacks.
The primary causes and begin to seek long – term solutions.

On January 14th 2018 , i put out an Article I tagged: “Nigerian Immigrants and the Trump Factor”, copied below.
“Is “POTUS”, President Donald Trump totally Wrong about Nigerian Immigrants not wanting to return to Nigeria once they get to the United States Of America?
This comment could be seen as somewhat demeaning especially coming from President Trump, by virtue of the fact that he is not exactly liked by a significant number of Nigerians living abroad (Going with the opinion of some pundits), but isn’t he talking reality?

On the other hand, Chances are likely that, He is misinformed about Nigerians living in huts, action ready , seeking for aides from a white man, which could be as a result of images of Nigeria, showcased by western media , (often times ignoring metropolitan and urban Nigeria/it’s people, especially when the focus is on Boko – Haram & Fulani herdsmen.
By default, it is this kind of showcase, (mud houses, huts, primitive looking landscape) that the average Westerner or American has of an African society.
As much as Nigerians will argue about Nigerians being the most educated immigrants to America, or other countries around the world, the west will also see Nigeria as a representation of Boko-Haram, Libyan Slave Trade, failed state system with a failed pattern of leadership.
The intelligent ones living abroad should not be aloof while Nigeria continues to degenerate.
It’s up to each of us to project the good and positives, Nigeria /Africa has to offer the world.
It is up to us to chat a new cause for the next political dispensation, to create a Nigeria / Africa comfortable for our children and children’s children to live in.

The Leaders of any country in Africa, should always put their countries and citizens first.
History is beckoning on us to Rebirth our ideologies, towards making our Nigeria and other west African countries safe and habitable for us all.
In Summary, Nigerian Leaders, should Please confront the factors that push their citizens to flee the nation.

We can begin by strengthening existing Institutions – Health care System, Power and Electricity, Security.
Nigeria should Respect her citizens, develop their capacities, respect your Borders of other countries and respect its own borders.
Nigeria should uphold it’s rule of law, Regulations & Diversity.
Indeed, every citizen longs for a Government that fulfils it’s responsibilities and obligations.
Every citizen deserves a decent life, a government that cares about it’s well being, interest, security and prosperity.
It takes time but on the long- run when we become frail, our children’s children will be more wiling to invest in their societies and not emigrate, cos it will be safe for their investments with a more conducive environment.
African Union , tasked with the responsibility of ensuring unity and solidarity between African countries and African people has a major role to play.
The government of South Africa should stop sidelining xenophobic violence, and downplaying violence by blaming it on criminality or the natural resentment poor South Africans feel towards those they perceive as stealing opportunities from them.

HealthPlug's Top 4; Our Bodies by DejiPlug(op): 6:33am On Oct 04, 2019
According to extensive studies, (further simplified by Jill Willard), our complete bodies consists of four parts and while three of them seem intangible (emotional, mental, spiritual) they actually constitute the physical presence, though mainly as exterior body mass/rings. Two of these bodies are masculine (Physical, Mental)and other two are feminine (Emotional, Spiritual), which highlights reasons many of us seem long ways from whack when imbalanced or overlapping

It is a well known fact that society generally indulges the masculine side of things (do/ accomplish), and put less focus on the feminine (feel/ empathize) whereas it isn't black and white as they make it seem because the feminine part is what usually makes our daily experiences worth the adventure. Here Plug Nation assesses the four bodies individually and their significance within the universe

Plug's Top 4; Our Bodies

Spiritual Body:

This is the most exterior body that connects to everything that is in the universe (especially the divine or higher self), providing protection, union, help, and guidance from an outside source as well as from those who have passed on (ancestors). Many do not understand or want to acknowledge that the functionality of this body has little to do with religion but more of constant meditation. Basically It is the unity of all living things, including the union between our soul, life experience, and destiny. Everything tangible stems from this body.

Mental Body

Firmly balanced within few inches to a foot outside the body, The mental body has to do with all things intellectual and how we process information, It also includes focus, clarity, direction, and contributions to creation. It is a key element in thoughts becoming reality

Emotional Body

The connection between the mental-emotional body is the reason why there are always different sides to a story or situation. It defines how our general experiences are interpreted(i.e., how we react, interpret, and respond to situations and outside energies, particularly mundane issues like how we feel when people look at us in a certain way, or how we respond to something they might say, etc.).

Physical Body

The most regarded body and just as it sounds, it refers to our skin and everything related, i.e the brain, organs and everything between the ears. It also includes the skeletal system, fascia, organs, and blood, etc. We usually know when our physical body is full or not, hurt or not, happy or not, healthy or not. The signs are visible and generally recognizable. Medical culture places a lot of emphasis on this body and that it specifically not experience pain or discomfort being the host body.

CareerPlug's Top 4: Surviving Professions by DejiPlug(op): 1:15pm On Oct 03, 2019
The world is fast evolving from Computer age to Computerised age and the rate at which employees are constantly being laid off (usually unexpected partly due to rise of the machines) it would involve divine grace to calm underlying fears of the rising global population. Even though some strongly believe that technology taking over might allow Man time to find his true purpose in the universe while another group suggests we are steps closer to biblical end times. Guardians are now enrolling wards at special skills training centres asides the already top notch education to enrich their chances in the job market. Here, Plug Nation briefly highlights 4 professions that won't be affected by the impending purge but instead thrive.

We encourage readers to drop comments, suggestions, thoughts, opinions and all that comes to mind

Pug's Top 4 Future Surviving Professions.

Teachers

Knowledge and information exchange is a basic foundation of our existence, regardless of how it is acquired. Aside books, data storage and diaries, We are all teachers in our own unique way, a part of each other but still apart from each other so the world can never run out of teachers. Jesus Christ and a number of history's greatest personalities were Teachers, subsequently adding more rep to the Teaching profession.

CEOs

Information begets ideas, ideas create opportunities while opportunities in turn create freedom, success and other beautiful perks associated with being a boss. Everyday there is power play and sometimes friendly rivalry across the world, usually between companies headed by informed people who capitalized on ideas to create their opportunity. As long as the gift of Life and that of Freewill continues to exist, Information will always flow to influence ideas that creates CEOs

Medical Workers

The variety in the medical field makes it evergreen and despite the rapid technological advancement in the sector, thankfully the machines would still require supervision by a professional hence diagnosis and prognosis remains an human factor. Competent traditional health workers and midwives will also thrive because of the growing population.

IT Professionals

Not up to a century after appearing, the IT field has successfully integrated into a part of our daily lives and infiltrated almost every other profession. Information databases warrant human oversight to function, CEOs need IT gurus to stay ahead, Medical equipment requires human supervision, basically the world is going digital and we would be needing competent caretakers to make sure things keep moving smoothly.

Others we didn't mention include;

* Broadcasters (although China has introduced the first artificial intelligence TV presenter), information has to be arranged and packaged before presentation

* Project/ Production Managers

Music/RadioTop Nigerian Broadcasters 2019- Plug Nation by DejiPlug(op): 12:20pm On Sep 26, 2019
When the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (originally established in 1933 by the British as Radio Diffusion Service RDS) was reorganized into Nigerian Broadcasting Services across Nigeria, it was with a mission to provide independent, impartial broadcasting services. Although the advent of social media continues to empower legions of unskilled broadcasters, a rising number of innate professionals are also evolving because of their love for the hustle like big dawg Do2tun of Cool FM, delectable Wofai Samuel formerly of MITV/ Star FM, Trek convener Samson Oki of Mckinggs Media and the unstoppable princess Oluwatomisin Ojo of MITV who are maintaining their relevance below the radar lately. This list consists of broadcasters on the evolution train who have been making waves since the beginning of 2019 and here's Plug Nation's Top 4 Nigerian Broadcasters for the year.

Ife Ajagbe (Celeb Stopover)

Top on this list of Nigeria's favorite broadcasters of 2019 is the popular honey voiced Kennis FM presenter and Celeb Stopover host with an enviable résumé of more international reference lately. A graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University (Ile Ife), Ife is indisputably the most celebrated broadcaster of 2019, given her move from Metro to Kennis FM, successful podcasts for entertainers and notably Celeb Stopover program which has featured stars around the world. Ife was celebrated by Punch Newspapers this year and is married to cinematographer, Lanre Olupona.

Caesar Ume Ezeoke (Man of Steel)

The handsome and charismatic lawyer cum media personality who proudly doubles as Africa's man of steel. Caesar Nathaniel Ume- Ezeoke is another brilliant mind steadily working his way up the executive ladder of progress. Widely recognized as the hunky honorable host/ producer of Rap Nation, Showbiz Weekly amongst other urban programs, Caesar who is of exotic bloodline is also a radio host at Cool FM, music entrepreneur and model who was at a time snagged by female rapper Eva.

K- Baba (Love Wantintin)

Any thoughts towards hiring capable hands to ensure an interestingly charged ceremony, give it up for the professionally private Love Wantintin crooner, K- Baba the Love Doctor, who asides his longstanding hookup program on Wazobia FM is a prolific Master of Ceremony at choice events with the charms to hold an audience spellbound and relief to a raving crowd.

Ovie Osalue (Pidgin Radio)

The story of Africa's premier online vernacular radio company, Pidgin Radio and its colorful team of broadcast enthusiasts led by former TooXclusiv sound engineer, Ovie Osalue Cohen is an inspiring one. After years of continued programmings, the broadcasting company recently broke into mainstream and have been instrumental in promoting others too, while snagging coveted awards.

"I used to sell frozen foods when my husband was still alive. He died when I was one month pregnant with my last of 3 children. I was still managing at the shop until thieves came to rob and carted everything away. The suffering became intense as a widow with no source of income. After so much begging, my friends helped me raise money to start a new business. I started collecting and selling provisions and soft drinks in wholesale. But this time, I got robbed thrice. After the first robbery, I managed to borrow money from people to restock a little, but as soon as I started making profit, thieves came again and packed everything. The manager of the depot where I was collecting goods felt pity for me so I was given goods on loan with the agreement that I will pay back as soon as I start making profit. For the third time, thieves came again. Honestly, I don't know if I was being setup, but I've handed everything to God. I'm still in debt at the depot as we speak. I had to sell my generator to pay back a little from what I owed, so they've agreed to allow me pay N4,000 weekly until my debt is cleared. I'll complete the payment by August.
I started this Marwa business on September 9 last year. I collected it on loan for N1million and I've been paying back N16,100 weekly. I was told that if I don't complete the payment by November this year, they will collect it back, but if I do, it will become mine fully. That was our agreement and I've been paying them weekly for 10 months now.
Honestly, I still prefer frozen foods business because this keke business has too much wahala. I had an accident last month, a bus driver hit my keke from behind and it summersaulted thrice. I regained consciousness in the hospital where I spent a week and then another two weeks at home. I only just resumed work again three days ago after I noticed my children were crying of hunger. I still feel pains in my legs and left hand."

"My name is Anuoluwapo and I'm 18 years old. This food I'm carrying is not mine. I hawk for someone and I deliver an average of N4,000 a day, and at the end of the month, my boss is supposed to pay me N12,000. I just started though, the day before yesterday marked a month but she hasn’t paid.
I originally learned to be a hairdresser while I was still in secondary school, but I've not been able to raise money for my freedom. I did my hairdressing apprenticeship for 3 years, but I don’t know how much the freedom fee will cost. I haven’t gone back to my boss since 2015 because my dad told me not to until I am ready for the freedom.
My dad would usually tell me not to work, to sit at home but as I got fed up, I had to go out. Now I am making money for my boss and she hasn’t paid me. I asked for it but she says she can’t give me now and I am still watching.
My Dad has 8 children and 3 wives, he works as a commercial Driver and spends most of his money on women. I was 8 years old when my mother passed away and my Dad is not the serious type with children. Our first born is a bus conductor, second born has learnt several trades but no one to sponsor his freedom. Even me, I was unable to write WAEC alongside my classmates because my father didn't pay for it."
.
"Would you go back to school if the opportunity comes knocking?"
.
"I would prefer to go back to my hairdresser job since that is what is on my mind. I no longer have interest in school. When I was growing up, I always wanted to be an actress, on screen. I believe if I go for training, I can still catch up."

"My name is Charles Okosun and I have been in the entertainment business for close to 40 years now. I am a brother to evangelist Sunny Okosun, I managed him all through his career - locally and internationally, and from his management I was lucky to meet with so many international and local artistes. There’s a lot I have done in the music scene but it is not good to blow your horns, those who know will know.
What I do here is just a part time business. I have a radio programme every Tuesday on 104.7, the title is Which Way Nigeria, where we interview people and talk about Nigeria.
Apart from entertainment, I am a property agent, but with entertainment, I was able to sit with people like Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, who was in my house for one month, worked with Fela, Sunny Ade, Jimmy Cliff and a host of others, including heads of states like Sergeant Doe and Gadaffi.
I was the first manager to successfully tour west Africa and Liberia where I first met President Doe with only a west African passport. Also pulled off fundraising shows and concerts both here and abroad for several heads of state like Gowon and Ojukwu, who opened this place for us.
I toured America about 15 times, and when Peter Tosh visited Nigeria, he stayed with us and visited my village. Bob Marley’s wife too would always come here then. I no longer manage musicians as I am getting old, my last was Sunny."
_

"A lot of things have changed about the entertainment industry. Unlike what we have now, music was on a serious level in my days. I call this present generation of musicians miracle workers because, then we had professionals. You can not just walk into a recording studio and decide you want to sing. If a recording company gives you a recording date because they like your music, you have to rehearse for 2 to 3 months, because then it was analog not digital where you can afford to make mistakes and corrections. Again, it was just 4 tracks and if you do not play well, the producer will have issues with you.
Nowadays, so many CDs are in the market that people don’t buy because it’s just too digital. It’s not like the musicians are not good but when you talk of professionals, a musician must learn from somebody, and know how to play instruments, if not, who will back you up?
Like in the case of organizing an all night concert, without 10, 20 bands, it can not work because most of the artistes we have now cannot play through the night. Those days, someone like Fela can play all night, Sunny Okosun too, likewise Sunny Ade but the big boys of now can't stand the night. Thank God for them, they are making the money but I hardly pay to watch a band now because there’s nothing to hear.
Look at what is happening in the country now. Those days, government no dey try am. When people like Fela and Sunny Okosun dey? Music had value, it was a weapon and they fought seriously.
Our women can now shoot videos in pants, without brassieres and the youths are enjoying it. Those days, women rarely shot music videos lest to talk of appearing nude.
Most of my clients here are elderly people, they are all going back to old music because new school music is like a written letter without purpose and conclusion. Back then, there was always a lesson to learn from an album but now what is the content of the music? But I know very soon, the old sounds are coming back."

"I came to Lagos from Cotonou 10 years ago and I've been selling variety of seafood at this spot since then. I left my hometown because there was no money and it was just my Mom going through all the stress as Dad is no more. I also have younger siblings that needed my mom's care, so I had to leave to reduce her burden. I came down to Lagos with my dad’s younger sister. She owns the stock I sell here and I get paid weekly. Profits are irregular so I make between N1,500 and N2,000 at the end of the week, depending on the sales I make.
The money isn't enough but my husband who is still studying to become a Doctor, told me to endure till this year’s end so he can get me a small shop to start selling provisions.
My husband and I are from Cotonou but we met here at this spot. We currently have two kids."

"I began this business with 30 thousand naira when I newly arrived in Lagos in 2015 and I was selling in traffic at the time. Depending on how well sales go, I make between 10 to 15 thousand naira weekly, and it is from the money I make that I send to my mother and brothers in the village for feeding."
~
MSS: Are you married?
~
"I'm not married yet because there is no money. Although I have a girlfriend back home waiting for me. The only delay is the bride price."
~
MSS: How much is the bride price?
~
"Depending on the culture, you might be asked to pay 100 thousand naira as the initial bride price, then 50 thousand to the bride’s mother, and another 50 thousand to the bride’s godmother. The estimate for the bride price is 200 thousand and so far I have been able to save up to 100 thousand.
I can't wait to bring her to start living with me here in Lagos so we can both enjoy together."

When I arrived in Lagos 40 years ago as a newly wed and didn't know what business to do, I decided to continue with fruits. I started with hawking but I have been selling at this spot for almost 20 years now. With this business, we trained our four children in school. They all have good knowledge about fruits business, but I encouraged them to go into different trades.
My fruits are blessed because 'Esogbewa' is our name. Even Doctors in this area recommend our fruits because they are fresh and chemicals free so they don't cause stomach aches."

Uber and the rest have spoilt this business for us, especially yellow cabs. We no longer enjoy it as we used to but we are still managing. We now make less than N3,000 per day and it is not regular, and there's nothing we can do about it. People don't really learn the business these days. All it takes is to be unemployed and able to drive to divert to this profession. There is no orderliness and the government is not doing anything about it."
