@Beaf, thank you! @Gekko, who isnt really a clown in our political class today? |

barneli:IELTS only! |
lovelynk:Go to www.cic.gc.ca and study the process. It's outlined there! blackpro:There's the Academic & General IELTS. General Test is what you need; it's also easier. Quite frankly, anyone that has gone through the Nigerian Educational system (even though broken) can get close to maximum points on the test without any form of studying. Google IELTS practice questions (General) and help yourself. If you have money to waste, then you can check for books around to buy. If you need to study a book to pass IELTS, I'd just advice you to stay put in Nigeria; trust me! Goodluck. |
Rare:A TRV is different from your permit to stay (in your case, Study Permit). A TRV just gives you permission to entert he country; it does not give you permission to stay; so even though you have a 1 day Visa (TRV), as far as you arrive before the Visa expires, you will be granted some form of stay depending on your status; in your case, I'd assume they'd give you a study permit in the airport which will be valid for 2yrs (they may give you a 1yr study permit, which means you have to renew it INLAND; that's where the 30days recommendation comes to play. It's just a recommendation, not a strict rule). Your TRV can be expired, while you are studying in Canada and it's no issue as far as your study permit is not expired and you do not plan to leave and re-enter Canada. It's when you plan to leave and re-enter, then you will have to renew the TRV (if it is expired). So, yes, you can send it to Buffalo for renewal via Canada Post whether it is expired or nearly expired. You also have to show that you are a registered student ( a letter from your registrar's office) with a valid study permit in Canada. It's a fairly easy process compared to what you face in Lagos. In the section where they ask you the reason for your application, you have to come up with a reason like you are planning to go home for Christmas vacation and want to be able to come back to continue your studies, etc. |
Rare:Very practical. 99dreamkid:Forget the number. Go to the CDHC and request to see someone. Make sure you get there before 8am and be as polite as you can be to the security guys while trying to press your case. Good luck! |
99dreamkid:Registration is not usually a problem for most Canadian institutions. You should be able to register online (from Nigeria). When did you submit your Visa application? |
Hotstepper:Like I said, it depends on the institution. Some, it may not be a biggie as far as you withdraw before the deadline. Others, they wont even answer you because as far as they are concerned, they helped you get your Visa and they literally vouched for you that you have paid your fees and you'd be taking classes within that year. Now after getting the Visa, you are telling them, "No, I'm not going to be attending classes; I just used you folks to come to Canada; give me back my money". Get the drift? |
@chamber2, Am still in Naija I wanted to inquire if this scenario is possible. A friend and I, due in Ualberta, are still trying to acquire study leave approvals at our workplaces. Already have entry visa. Is it possible that we 'land' in Canada this Fall; enroll as students; acheive activities such as SIN and bank account openings, possibly residency and acclimitazation (total duration of 3 weeks). After that request a defer of studies till Winter or next Fall, travel back to Naija and return to commence studies after concluding with employers. This allows to avoid not 'landing' and having to go through entire student visa processing again. Also having in mind that possible 2-year studey permit to be issued at port of entry would still be valid by time of re-entry. --------------------------------------------- @Rare, are your landing? Or are you coming in as a student? Landing usually refers to Permanent Residents arriving (landing) Canada for the "first" time. Based on your other posts, you are likely a student coming in with a single entry Visa. What I would do is, as soon as you arrive, apply to Buffalo for a multiple TRV by post (it will be a tall order to even get an appointment for a US Visa, and I doubt they'd even grant you one since you just came in; not impossible tho). It usually takes about 2-3 wks by post. You can give them any reason like you plan to travel to Nigeria for christmas break, etc. That way, when you leave Canada, you can return. If you make the mistake of flying back to Lagos, you will have to reapply to CHDC, Lagos. With a study permit (which you will get when you first arrive), it may be alot easier since you wont have to go thru medicals, etc but those people in Lagos defy all forms of logic and common sense. You can probably open a bank account as alot of banks come on campus during the first couple weeks of the session to "catch" new customers otherwise you may need to book an appointment etc; I do not think you will be able to get a SIN because you do not have a work permit and you are not eligible for one unless you have a job with your university. 3 wks is possible to get yourself sorted but that's really pushing it. Do you have accommodation sorted? You probably already paid part of your tuition. To get a full refund, you have to apply within a certain date. Sometimes, some institutions may refuse to make any refunds (especially the first year) because they vouched for you when the embassy contacted them. These are things you have to sort out. Goodluck! |
ucheawesom:There's nothing like Highly skilled. The program is a "Federal Skilled" Program; that's what you are probably referring to. You probably want to apply asap. The cap was only introduced on the 26th of June and will run till 25th June next year. The earlier the better for you. Goodluck! |
Folks, you may not be eligible for a Social Insurance Number (SIN) few days after you arrive as an INTERNATIONAL student on a STUDY PERMIT. This rule applies mostly to undergrads (and grad) students. As a graduate student, you may be offered Teaching Asst or Research Asst positions. With that, you can get a SIN. For those that do not know, SINs are issued in cases where you have to earn money for Tax purposes and other Social Services. Up till 2005/6 (can't remember), you just had to show up with your study permit and you were issued a SIN (without an expiry date). However, alot of int'l students were breaking the rules (working off campus) since they had SINs (as no employer can pay you legitly without a SIN); my guess is that a way to curb this issue was to issue SIN to students with work permits and students that had jobs in universities. That's why if your SIN starts with a "9", it now comes with an expiry date (which either denotes the end of your work permit or study permit or your contract job). If are a student and you do not have either (or both), there's no way you'd get a SIN today. |
debosky:It's not even near impossible. 4wks? It is impossible. Someone coming from Nigeria on a Visitor's Visa will need to undergo medicals to obtain a Temporary stay (Student, Worker, etc). The person has to apply to Buffalo; Buffalo then acknowledges the application and if everything looks legit, they'd ask the fellow to undergo medicals. The medicals are all sent to a central place in Ottawa where there are uploaded. Everything goes well, then Buffalo sends you a letter approving your application and you;d have to go to the border to get the SP or WP. This takes at least 3mths. All thru this process, the person has to remain in status in Canada. The only way you can change status is if the border agent gives the fellow the usual 6mths Visitors stay when he/she arrives at the airport. These days, they have been purposely giving less; 6mths is more than enough to change your status. Otherwise, the person will need to renew his/her stay; and for one to renew a visitor's stay, you have to prove that you carried out what you initially came for and that particular business is making you stay longer (or something else came up). Medlabgirl:That's more like it; "Consider" is the keyword. Not "COMING TO CANADA Choose British Columbia". |
kunle93:You an an international student, whether applying from the UK or Rwanda. Go to the institution's website to see their requirement for your program. Good luck! |
Medlabgirl:No problem. Next time, I'd draw pictures for you. ![]() |
debosky:You were in Victoria for Canada '07? Maybe na you I see. How bodi? Long time! BTW, I agree with your post. |
canuck:This is the mistake lots of immigrants make i.e. writing off Eastern Canada or other provinces like say na ethnic diversity we go chop. As someone that has travelled (and lived) the length of Canada, I'd always advise immigrants (especially professional immigrants) to settle in the smaller provinces (NS, NB or even NFLD). There's no point moving to Toronto to rent or buy a house and compete with fellow immigrants to get jobs, while the Eastern provinces are always tweaking their programs to attract immigrants. For instance, if you are a medical practioner looking to practice, you are more likely to get your license easier in NFLD than in ON; infact, you can start practicing in less than a year and get a full license 2yrs afterwards then you can relocate to any province of your choice; but guess what? There are thousands of MDs in ON, AB & BC that have been applying for years trying to get in the system because of ethnic diversity. Same thing with Engineering. NB just started a program that will accept foreign experience and grant you a P.Eng ceritificate without writing exams all over again within a few mths; the P.Eng certs are interchangeable within the provinces; but guess what? There are several hundreds of Engineers that have been writing exams in ON. I can go on and on; The trick to immigrating is planning properly and knowing what each province can provide you based on your outlook & priorities in life. If my parents were immigrating to Canada today, I'd tell them, go to Victoria cos it's a beautiful & nice place to retire. If you are into full time business, I'd advice you to move to Toronto because it;s very close to the US and you'd most likely be doing business in the US. If you are looking to settle as a professional and need a license to practice, you need to look for a province that has a clear cut program that will absorb you. Once you are absorbed into the system, you can move anywhere you want to. If you are looking for manual labour jobs, every province offers something although there are obviously more factories in ON, so there are more opportunities there. But then again, there are usually lesser applicants for every position advertised in the Eastern province compared to cities like Toronto and the cost of living is obviously relatively cheaper. When you find your feet, then you can move to wherever you can to find your diversity wahala; but quite frankly, no offence to other immigrants, I like my non-diverse neighbourhoods, relatively little or no crimes, house value appreciating everyday and you get to deal with people that know how to deal with other people. Unfortunately, immigrants (Africans, Indians, etc) most times end up in this part of the world very arrogant and ignorant, rude, loud and could care less about their neighbours. . .same traits we exhibit at home. I will not buy an overpriced property in Jane and Finch (Toronto) but I'd willingly buy properties in the Eastcoast. |
Medlabgirl:I never said there were no jobs in BC, I said, "Unless you have guaranteed income (a good job, business, etc), do not move to BC. There's more to living than weather and scenery. Cost of living is relatively high in BC". Simple! Is the cost of living relatively high in BC compared to other provinces? Yes. Are there jobs in BC? Yes, but you can get the same $22/hr jobs you are bragging about in other provinces and you spend less on your upkeep. Moreso, the job market is pretty tight, even in BC. Again, for anyone reading this thread, if you re lookng to immigrate to Canada, look for where suits your lifestyle, jobs, etc. |
