AutosRe: Do Not Buy Any Used Vehicle Without Checking Out The Vin ! by Delta007(m): 1:52am On Feb 18, 2008
Ivvie:
Selling a salvage car and a used car are two different matters.  If the business is run in honesty, there is no profit made to it.  Salvage cars are vehicles with a montetary drop value of 75% off its current resale value.  A car that has been salvage except for theft cannot be as it was prototyped.  Some states have low requirements to deem salvage but Texas sure isn't one of them.

People try to reduce how much of a loss they'd encounter in the long run when they purchase a vehicle.  When you buy a salvage car, you pretty much cannot sell that car for it's intended value how much trade it in.  Body works are not precise as Integrated Manufacturing.  Nigerians are buying cars that have been wet, junked, salvaged and other conditions that isolate it from being road worth; patching it up and selling it at exhorbitant prices (as though used).  I don't know what part of the United States you are in but it sure isn't an investment.  Once that title says Rebuilt or Salvage, run from it.  I don't care the amount of experience you have.  Engineers go to school for 6 years and do all kinds of abstract discipline to be able to manufacture a vehicle and pass it as ideal (in some cases, perfect).  There is a lot more to a vehicle than just putting parts together and passing it off as good.  It's also common sense, no one wants to buy a car that wasn't properly maintained or driven hard how much more severely accidented.

I know one thing, once a police report has been filed and it has been in any kind of an accident, there is a huge depreciation to that vehicle.  If you can buy a non accidented vehicle at the same price of a salvage vehicle, why negate on your choice.
Ha. . .everybody get him own opinion sha. A vehicle basically consists of it's frame and Engine (transmission, shaft, cylinders, etc). It's not rocket science. . .that's why even our road side mechanics wey no go school fit repair car. If an accident occurs and those basic components are not affected or severely compromised, there's really nothing to be scared about if a good rebuilding job is done. And yes, I'm an Engineer. Lastly, there's alot of profit in the rebuilding business that's why thee are millions of peeps in the business today in N.America. I'm registered on several salvage auction sites in N.America as a dealer (just a side hobby) and bidding is very very competitive; it's definitely not aliens i'm bidding against. But like i said, everyone get him idea . . perhaps u are right while the millions involved in the bizness are wrongfully making decent profits. My last naira.

@Delta007

Well said. However I think the issue down here in Nigeria is when car dealers go over to the US, buy accident damaged salvage cars and repair, ship it back home and try to pass this off as new or one that has never been accident damaged before. I think if the car dealers gives a honest picture of the car history that would be fine, but a situation where in the quest to make ridiculous profits, they engage in trying to pass of an accident damaged car as new is nothing but fraud.

I enjoin anyone in naija buying tokunbo to shine their eyes and carry out this check. Could save you some $$$ on the long run.
There's nothing new there. Even in the US, people do it. The 2nd hand market all over the world is "buyers beware". I know a few folks who ship in rebuilt vehicles and their customers are well aware about the condition before it is bought and after it is repaired. They pass all the safety and mechanical tests before they are shipped in and the fact that the vehicle is rebuilt is reflected in their prices. I can vouch for 99% of all vehicles these dudes have sold and their customers keep bringing new customers. Infact, one of the guys don land another 3 40-ft containers few days ago.

It goes both ways, I must say.

TravelRe: Thinking Of Relocating To Canada. by Delta007(m): 10:54pm On Feb 17, 2008
@Amsky:

Hopefully, i can address a few issues based on my experience.

Firstly, with regards the tax issue, that is a big killer. Every province is different tho. Some are less than the others (depending on how wealthy the province is). At the moment, Alberta is booming cos of the oil sands. . .so u guessed right; every living soul is virtually moving there cos u can cash in within a cpl years and leave. The real estate market there is unreal. Thankfully, as a graduate, I have a regular well paying job most pple wud dream of, with a lot of flexibility and honestly, if i have to cater for my lifestyle (which some might say is abit flamboyant, but I no send grin), it wud be a tough one. I remember looking at the summary of my tax payments last year from this job and i just shook my head. . .wetin man dey pay, kai! I have to supplement my regular income from a few enterprises I tend to work out. I be Naija and even if they paid me 1million a day, I'm not just satisfied with coming home at 3pm because office don close. I just love challenging myself and fortunately, that brings me extra income. Like Debosky said, other ways pple use to combat the tax issue is buying a house, registering businesses, etc. I cant tell u how much tax u wud be paying; it just depends on which tax bracket u fall into. Feel free to browse the Canadian revenue Agency ( http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/menu-e.html ) to get an idea.

As for the education thingy, firstly, Canada is way cheaper than the UK. That's a fact. Prior to my move to Canada years ago, I had the option of choosing both locations and it's no contest. Altho, previously, international students werent allowed to work off campus in their respective universities in Canada; so either they settle for crappy limited spots on campus or they work under the table. Hence, I always advised pple with little income to settle for the UK so they can generate some income for their upkeep while in school but that law has been scrapped and international students are allowed to work after the first 6mths of starting their studies. As a permanent resident or citizen, u are not subjected to those high international differential fees. Students in provinces like Quebec pay peanuts. Also, I believe the standard of education in Canada is relatively high and although about 8% students attend private schools, majority High School students are in public schools and the education is free.

Someone has already addressed the health care issue. . . yeah, it's free grin

Yeah, babysitting cud be expensive too. I got friends and relatives with babies and I feel their pain when they complain. The govt tries to assist by paying u some social supplements per child (which u do not get if u do not file ur taxes smiley ) which is barely enough for anything. The more u make, the less u obviously get from the govt with regards this subject. I think the best way is to help urself by settling in fast and making decent friendships that share similar interests. That way, u can help ur neighbour and ur neighbour can help u.

Transportation . . .not as bad as the UK in my opinion. Yeah, gas is getting expensive everyday and i drive those guzzlers (see? i told u grin ). Most provinces have rebates now if u buy a vehicle that qualifies for the program. e.g. hybids. Every city/province also tends to have its own unique public transport structure. Some cities have deals with the respective universities so that all students (whether u use public transport or not) pay a flat fee (which is less than half a student wud pay) for public transportation during the school year. If u drive, parking cud be a b!tch if u work or got business to do in the urban metros.

I wont fail to emphasize the weather. I've been here long enough and I dont for one bit, dig the weather. I've only learnt to live with the weather and structure my activities around it. The summers could be very hot, just that it's short.

At the end of the day, if asked if i'd still make the move, Yes I would. Life is all about challenges and in my sojourns on planet earth, there' no one place u can go where success is guaranteed.

There's Avis and Eurocar in Transcorp Hilton in Abuja (as at cpl wks ago when I was there). I think also in Sheraton but u can check for their numbers online and give them a call to confirm.

Also, most hotels in Abuja have a car hire service where u pay the Driver for the whole day and he takes u wherever u want to go, waits for u, etc. I've used the one in Valencial Hotels in Abuja; they have decent cars and decent drivers and it cost N8000 per day.

AutosRe: Do Not Buy Any Used Vehicle Without Checking Out The Vin ! by Delta007(m): 8:33pm On Feb 17, 2008
Guys,
This is a good thread, however, i'd like to point out that a vehicle being termed "Salvage" or "Rebuilt" doesnt mean it's a bad vehicle. The term "salvage" is brandished on the vehicle because it was "written off" by an insurance company in the event of an accident, flood, stolen and recovered, etc; perhaps the insurance company feels it'd be better to pay off the owner of the vehicle than to repair it or the mechanics in collusion with the owner, jacked up the repair costs of the vehicle so that they get paid out, when in actual fact, the vehicle had minimum damage. I have also seen severely wrecked vehicles with clean titles because they werent reported. There are a number of stolen and recovered vehicles that are sold as salvages as well. . .absolutely nothing wrong with them other than they were initially stolen and the insurance company has paid off the owner.

I have driven rebuilt vehicles in the past and unless u were told it was rebuilt, u'd never know. The market for rebuilt vehicles in large in the N.America (i must say). They are selling like hot cake. . .and yes, they can be registered again if the rebuilders do their job and the vehicle passes a mechanical fitness test. So rebuilt vehicles in Naija isnt a biggie, as far as i am concerned. The main "koko" is to work with the person who's selling it to u. Basically, u know what/where the bash occured and what is being or what was repaired. A vehicle that was bashed from the front, I'd stay away from (especially if some parts of the engine was affected). A vehicle bashed from the back or side is no biggie. In America, all u need is call the manufacturer and the collision center of body rebuilders can easily fix it. If the frame of the vehicle has been compromised, then there's cause for alarm also. Infact, there are some states that would term vehicles as "junks" and others as "salvage". The junks are sold for parts only while the salvages are sold for rebuilds or parts (up to the buyer). I've been in the car business (as a side hobby) for a few years now and if u ask me, will i buy a rebuilt vehicle? My answer would be absolutely "YES", if i can assess and understand the damage and repairs that was done in the past (pictures would be good). Why would I buy a 2008 Range Rover for over $120K, when I can get the same rebuilt vehicle for half the price?

Anyway, my point is, not all salvage vehicles are junks. Only u (the buyer) can make the call when buying a Rebuilt Vehicle. My 1-naira!

@the poster, u're doing well. Carfax is a paid service and u are obviously using your time. Keep it up!

He wants to live large, but has no motivation to even start and run a bizness; the living large will only happen if u continue to give him awoof.

I wont be too fast to jump on the "You wont regret choosing Canada" wagon. Take that with a very large dose of salt. Personally, I don't regret my move here but my next move is back to Naija, God willing. Like I said, it's relative.  Taxes are a b!tch especially when u working for a corporation, just like in the UK. The US has a better tax system imho. The weather is no better than the UK. But like I said, it's all relative and depends on what stage u are in life and what you are looking for.

This was meant to be an interesting topic but posts like this (amongst others) smacks of pure stupidity. Unfortunately, there are only a few intelligent comments on this thread.

@tro-ode,
How many Naija boys have u met in the UK and US that warrants the sweeping generalization? I'm not holding briefs for anyone but hanging around riff rats and wannabe "Fiddys" (which is not exclusive to only Nigerian boys based "abroad"wink with no ambition doesnt mean every Nigerian dude based abroad is like that. Anyone can make similar generalizing comments with regards the Nigerian ladies, but I know there are very ambitious ones (and I've met a few of them). Assuming u are right, what about the Naija boys (yeah, young chaps) based abroad I meet (and hear about) on a daily, monthly or yearly that are constantly making headway with regards their professions, the surgeons, lawyers, engineers, accountants, etc; Are they from Mali? My advice to u is change ur neighbourhood or ur circle of friends (or riff rats) or perhaps u are just a riff rat like dem guys (last time i heard, brids of a feather flock together).

As for my Etsako lady, na Uselu get u.

Who said something about meeting them, omo I have more class than that but its just something I witness daily from this so called Nigerians aboard

Most Nigerians abroad still leaves with their parents, all they have to show is their cars and those called ghettos designers clothing like roca wear and co.

There are limits to clubbing e.t.c especially when you are planning to be responsible man and have a great future for yourself and whom u are getting married to

Most of them work get pay and blast it on shopping, partying, clothing and not think about saving.

Some of them don't even have a saving acct

They live day by day and not think about tomm

am sorry if my story is too long, but i want people to understand why this is so hard for me to decide.
I studied Electrical-computing engineering. now my focus is on non-profit organisations and working with youths. presently i'm working in an NGO, whilst following a classical music dream, so you see, i have my hands full.
Nice; that's pretty neat. I'd love to know how u are making out with the NGO bizness. I might be willing to give a helping hand.; I'm an EE.

With regards your love story, I don tell u. Leave all of them and come to the love doctor. smiley

On a more serious note sha, nobody can tell u (not) to go for Olu or PJ or Tammy or even the love Doctor (altho love is guaranteed with the LD  grin). Only u know how u feel. Right now, u are trying to feel your "reasonable" long term potentials, which is perfectly normal. The only sure decision is that the first dude is def out of the picture. There's really no need to rush anything altho I must say u definitely missed the boat on the Tammy dude. I doubt if u go back to him things will ever be the same (cud be much worse or way better than both of u anticipated, my guess is the former) regardless of what he says to u. See that r/s as an experience and move on. One thing u gotta realise is no matter how nerdy, bad or good someone is, if both of u are determined to make a relationship work, distance will never be a factor. You can always grow to like/love anybody (that's how u and Tammy started out) if u guys iron out your goals.

Lastly, with regards to career, my sincere advice for u is that, no carry career for head. Do what is necessary and a little bit more to make your career move but it's a very bad idea to sacrifice your relationships for your career. At the end of the day, your relationship/partner is what completes u; we are all humans. You only feel accomplished with a good career. So use good judgement. Bottomline, take your time, use your head and with time, things will fall in place.  My 1-naira.
