It is still possible to enter a country with just a day to the expiration of your visa but not in some countries like canada.
There was a case of a friend who had two days left in his visa before travelling to canada , at the port of entry he was almost returned home if not he declared asylum.
Your personality will definitely determine your stay sometimes irrespective of your visa.
In countries where your visas are given at port of entry the bta on you determines the longevity of your stay as barbados, cyprus, qatar, jordan, latvia

This is not true. A Visa (regardless of the country) is a document that enables you enter that country. The officer at the border determines how long you can stay in the country. Canada is no exception. You friend might have been trying to play some "tricks" cos there's no reason why he shud claim asylum.

Congrats on ur PR. I hope you make the best out of it. Canada is not as rosy as some people try to paint it, however, there are tools in place to aid you achieve whatever you want. There's a decent Nigerian community in BC and AB. Also, note the moment u move to Canada, u go automatically become the weatherman cos most of ur activities will be dicatated by the weather. Vancouver is slightly better with regards the cold, but the rains get as e be.

As for your hubby's professional exam, it's going to be a "long" ride but if he's determined, he'd easily scale thru.

NAA takes u to NY and Baltimore (altho u have to clear customs and immigration at NY).
Delta takes you to Atlanta (which is their hub) and I believe they fly to Houston.

How about with a solid Engineering experience he gets a scholarship that would fund his education if he wants to go further? How about him doing well with the company that thyey are willing to fund his education? How about him well that promotes him to a better pay, hence killing 3 birds (satisfaction, pay and career) with a stone? We can keep going on with the "how abouts" but throwing a "new" presmise, "Abroad" into an uncertainty doesnt negate the fact that it is an uncertainty. You can never go wrong with making decisions based on reality. Like Bebure rightly pointed out, "What I understand about engineering is this: Every engineer should spend the first few years of their career gaining experience and building contacts in the engineering field of their choice, thereafter, if you have had your nose to the ground and your ears and eyes wide open you should be able to set up your own company and if you are good at what you do believe me the sky is your limit. With banking however, you tend to start off with a decent salary but in the long run I believe there is only so much you can achieve (based purely on my observations). "

As i'm typing now am in the same crossroad as the poster's friend.I read Elect/Elect and got a 60k job in an automation company but recently got another offer from Zenith bank.I was supposed to resume in the bank yesterday and i had to call them to shift the resuming date to wednesday.But presently i have made up my mind to stick to my automation job.so if they call me tommorow,i will tell them i'm rejecting the bank job.

Just curious, what's the name of the automation coy? I've been looking for Automation consultants or Coys in Naija for a very long time.

Everybody in naija is just crased about paper and degrees, it's not even funny. Imagine a final year student who's thinking of going for his/her masters but has no clue what area to specialise, and where does he/she look for clues? Nairaland; Wow!

This is the simple reason Naija is where it is today; everybody wan chop today without thinking of tomorrow. Funny to see peeps using God to cloud their reasonings; supposing he doesnt meet the target? Dem go say na winch for village. This dude just left school perhaps proclaiming he's an Engineer with virtually no experience. Now, he's got an opportunity to build something under his belt, but hey, he's got connection with a bank and they double his dough. What experience does he have in bank and marketing? Zilch. What passion? Nada but he's seriously considering it because it's double his pay, short term. I would if I were in your shoes, no doubt but it's not like u are at the end of your career, dude. Time is on your side so whatsup with building on your strength and while u are at it evaluating your options? This reminds me of a thread in this section (can't remember the title) where someone explicitly remarked the decline in practical professions like this. In the Western world, u'd see students even taking up internship jobs with no pay just for the experience, why? because of the long term benefit. Goodluck!

U are in SS3 and u are talking like this. Na wa oh. I be DJ (as a hobby) and I have a profession; there's no way being a DJ would generate enough dough to get me houses and several investments today. But if u wan break record, go ahead; you are on ur own. When alarm blow, u'd discover another reason why God created u. Otherwise u better challenge urself at this young age and make the best of ur opportunities instead of hating on your school work.

Anyway, there are a few firms, especially in Lagos that are involved in the Agricultural sector in Nigeria. Do some research; u may be suprised. U can also work for the ministry of Agric.

Oh please, with the current state of things and the program itself, it's an absolute waste of time and resources. The original idea should and will always be applauded by any sensible individual but the "Nigerian factor" don dabaru everything. One year is alot of time to waste especially at an early age. If everybody, both private and public workers do their work timely and effectively, i'm 100% there 'd be a positive impact in every life in Nigeria.

Ok, Mary, u are sounding like a very big baby. At 20, I was already in my 3rd yr in my program in Canada, yes Canada; and guess what? I was an international student paying those fees and at thet time, we werent even allowed to work off campus unlike now. My point is, see it as a challenge that molds u instead of looking for an easy way out. Residents pay as little as $3K a yr and I find it hard to believe when I hear peeps like u crying. Even a good summer jab will take care of ur fees, accommodation, food, and other expenses unless u are a high-end girl; and yeah, there's nothing wrong in asking for assistance from ur folks. It has nothing to do with being a big girl. Being matured entails looking at ur options and maximising them; which means if ur folks are a financial option at this point in time, no biggie as far as u dont squander their dough. The Sweden option is not a bad idea but it's only the tuition that's free. You still got other expenses (similar to ur current situation) that may or maynot be more expensive (my guess is that they are more expensive in those Scan/Shengen countries).

I think part of ur problem is that u are finding it hard to adjust and settle down; this is partly due to ur location. Looking at ur number, it seems u are based in Manitoba, unfortunately one of the sh!tholes of Canada. It's true, Rural America is a glorified village; u cant compare it to Abuja. If u aint too far into ur program, it wont be a bad idea to move to a relatively decent city where u can mingle with other folks (Nigerians, Africans, etc), get decent jobs and have several other facilities at ur disposal. It wud aid ur settling down. Also, note ur location in Canada matters alot. In places like Manitoba, there are fewer jobs and since it's one of the poorer provinces, u are likely to pay higher tuition. You have the internet at ur disposal; make use of it and maximise ur potential here in Canada. If u got any other questions, feel free to holla @ me.

Your CV or Resume is what "sells" you for interview recommendations. If you are not getting interviews, it's either you are applying to jobs you are not qualified for or you are qualified but your CV/Resume is not "selling" you. That's a standard rule of thumb.

If you are getting interviews but aint landing any jobs, it generally means ur interview skills or personality isnt selling you!

those are just two-  like i said before - if you are truly curious about getting the names of any design firms in nigeria, just check out the billboards outside of any major constuction project. the names of all the involved parties will be there for you to see.

Perhaps, u don't understand what I meant be portofolio. I meant, what kind of jobs they do? their clients? perhaps their most recent projects or any projects worth knowing?, etc. Anyone can setup a consulting firm in Nigeria. I'm interested in firms that actually design, manage and commission projects from start to finish; not those that just spec and bid for contracts and then outsource; Need more clarification? And by the way, in this day and age, I'd expect any reputable firm to have some sort of e-contacts; perhaps website?

And by the way, how do u practise without being licensed? Or are u one of those that just read and highlight without comprehending? Even in Nigeria, for you to be registered as an Engineer, you must have "obtained the approved/accredited required academic qualification, must have four (4) years post-graduate experience which must be under the supervision of a senior registered Engineer". So what how does this debunk my point?

That's a poor argument there. When you take the oath, then you're a doctor. Have you done your NYSC yet? i edon't think you have, if you had you'd see the miracles these baby doctors pull off in clinics and hospitals everywhere.
You forget that these guys go through clinicals while in school, then go on to do housemanship before even serving.

In my Uni, 400L to 500L dentistry handled pretty much every day-to-day dental treatment for patiens, from root canal treatments to tooth extraction.

My guy, taking an oath DOES NOT make me an Engineer. I took an oath several years ago (as I pointed out in my first response on this thread) to provide Engineering services lawfully and ethically, just as medical grads do. Even the first day on my first job few days after my undergrad, I remember resolving an issue on a production line that was down for several hours. However, that never made me an Engineer. My experience after a few years made me one. Your point about Dental students carrying ourt tooth extractions, etc just buttresses my point that professions like these are "Practical" professions; the need for EXPERIENCE cannot be overemphasized; that is why you cannot earn accredited degrees from proxy unlike some management programs. Do u know that in N.America and probably Europe, you do not need an Engineering degree to be an Engineer? Go figure!

I'm not taking anything away from Engineers in Nigeria; most of the perceived incompetence is a system failure rather than the profession itself (altho there are incompetent Engineers everywhere, not just exclusive to Africa), hence my applause to my counterparts practising in the motherland, who despite the inadequacies of the Nigerian system have been on top of their game.

I don't think it is correct to say we nigerian Engineers do not design and that instead we do the work of technicians, If we don't do the designs, who else does? Frankly speaking, the engineering sector is onlu successful by the help of all: Consulting Engineers("designers", site Engineers, Technicians, etc. I worked in all these capacities and I think none is more dignifying or down-grading than the other it all depends on WHERE u work.

I'd be very interested in getting some info/contacts/website about existing Engineering Consulting Firms in Nigeria and their portofolios.
