Do You Know What's Lurking on Your Toothbrush?

Your toothbrush is loaded with germs, say researchers at England's University of Manchester. They've found that one uncovered toothbrush can harbor more than 100 million bacteria, including E. coli bacteria, which can cause diarrhea, and staphylococci (Staph) bacteria that cause skin infections.

But don't panic. Your mouth wasn't exactly sterile to begin with.

Mouthful of Bacteria
"The bottom line is, there (are) hundreds of microorganisms in our mouths every day," says Gayle McCombs, RDH, MS, associate professor and director of the Dental Hygiene Research Center at Old Dominion University.

That's no big deal. Problems only start when there is an unhealthy balance of bacteria in the mouth, McCombs says.

"It's important to remember that plaque -- the stuff you're removing from your teeth -- is bacteria," says dentist Kimberly Harms, DDS, consumer advisor for the American Dental Association. "So you're putting bacteria on your toothbrush every time you brush your teeth."

Could Your Toothbrush Be Making You Sick?
Probably not. Regardless of how many bacteria live in your mouth or have gotten in there via your toothbrush, your body's natural defenses make it highly unlikely that you're going to develop an infection simply from brushing your teeth.

"Fortunately, the human body is usually able to defend itself from bacteria," Harms says. "So we aren't aware of any real evidence that sitting the toothbrush in your bathroom in the toothbrush holder is causing any real damage or harm. We don't know that the bacteria on there are translating into infections."

Still, you should exercise some common sense about storing your toothbrush, including how close it is to the toilet.

Toothbrush Storage Tips
Once you've moved your toothbrush away from the toilet, here are a few other storage tips to keep your brush as germ-free as possible:

•Keep it rinsed. Wash off your toothbrush thoroughly with tap water every time you use it.

•Keep it dry. "Bacteria love a moist environment," Harms says. Make sure your brush has a chance to dry thoroughly between brushings. Avoid using toothbrush covers, which can create a moist enclosed breeding ground for bacteria.

•Keep it upright. Store your toothbrush upright in a holder, rather than lying it down.

•Keep it to yourself. No matter how close you are to your sister, brother, spouse, or roommate, don't ever use their toothbrush. Don't even store your toothbrush side-by-side in the same cup with other people's brushes.

•Whenever toothbrushes touch, they can swap germs.

When to Toss Your Toothbrush
The best way to limit the bacteria on your toothbrush is to replace it on a regular basis.
The American Dental Association recommends throwing out your toothbrush every three to four months. If the bristles become frayed, you're sick, or you have a weak immune system, throw it out even more often. If you use an electric toothbrush, throw out the head as often as you'd discard a disposable toothbrush.

You may say the aim is defeated but NYSC is still a year of experience. You gain working experience and how to live independently; how to manage 19800 per month. You also get to interact with other people, know their culture, way of living etc. Most people always refer to their service year.

One can also use the opportunity to apply for professional courses at subsidized rate and also apply for jobs.

As for me, I don't think it should be scrapped.

There are many types of chocolate such as milk chocolate, white chocolate, dark chocolate, etc but the best type of chocolate that is benefit is dark chocolate.

Dark chocolate contains less sugar than other types of chocolate. It may support cardiovascular health. Other effects under preliminary research include reduced risks of cancer, coughing and heart disease. Chocolates may lower blood pressure; improve vascular function and energy metabolism.

Some potential effects of chocolate in the body include:

1. Support of Cardiovascular Health: Limited research indicates that cocoa or dark chocolate may produce certain effects on human health. Cocoa has antioxidant activity, an effect not proved in the body. Some studies have also observed a modest reduction in blood pressure.

Flavonoid which is present in dark chocolate help relaxes the blood pressure and help balance the hormone to be stable. Other than that, dark chocolate help decrease a high blood pressure, and also help get rid and decrease bad cholesterol. It would also stimulate the endorphin production.

Consuming milk chocolate or white chocolate, or drinking fat-containing milk with dark chocolate, appears to largely negate the health benefit.

2. Slows Down Aging: Dark chocolate has flavonoids (usually found in vegetables or fruits with dark color) that act like antioxidant to our body. Antioxidant helps slow down our body from aging.

3. Aphrodisiac: Romantic lore commonly identifies chocolate as an aphrodisiac. The reputed aphrodisiac qualities of chocolate are most often associated with the simple sensual pleasure of its consumption. A gift of chocolate is a familiar courtship ritual. Research looking at the psycho activity of chocolate reveals that methylxanthine, an active biological substance found in chocolate, competes with adenosine, a presynaptic inhibitor modulator, and blocks its receptor. This induced blockage can lead to arousal. The participants' blood pressure decreased, and they showed improvements in insulin sensitivity, meaning they were better able to metabolize glucose.

4. Stimulant: Chocolate may be a mild stimulant to humans mainly due to the presence of theobromine. It is much more potent for horses, and its use in horse racing is prohibited.

Chocolate contains a variety of substances, some of which may have an effect on body chemistry. These include: Anandamide, arginine, caffeine, dopamine, methylated xanthines, oxalic acid, phenethylamine (an endogenous alkaloid sometimes described as a 'love chemical; it is quickly metabolized by monoamine oxidase-B and does not reach the brain in significant amounts), theobromine (the primary alkaloid in cocoa solids and chocolate and partly responsible for chocolate's mood-elevating effect).

5. Mexican healers use chocolate to treat bronchitis and insect bites.

6. The carbohydrates in chocolate raise serotonin levels in the brain, resulting in a sense of well-being.

7. While the sugar in chocolate may give energy, too much of it can cause tooth decay and gum disease if eating without regular and proper teeth brushing. Sugar plays a harmful role in tooth decay by providing the bacteria in your mouth with energy. The bacteria begin to multiply faster, and plaque begins to grow in size and thickness on your teeth. Bacteria can also use sugar as a type of glue to cling to your teeth, making it difficult to get rid of with just a toothbrush.

8. Chocolate contains caffeine and too much caffeine may lead to hypertension, insomnia, anxiety, dehydration and inability to concentrate.

9. Addiction/craving: There is some evidence that chocolate may be addictive, or at least subject to craving; people who crave chocolate or obsessively consume it are referred to as chocoholics.

And to all those saying edo state govt. dont pay, its because the state dont pay that why your PPA is paying, for the state that are paying, you are not entitle to any money from PPA, i.e Osun, PPA dont pay that why aregbe pay 5k, so you see its almost the same,

Some things you said are wrong. I'm currently serving in Edo. Agenebode to be precise which is 45mins drive from Auchi.

The first problem corpers will encounter is the camp. Okada camp is in a bad condition and we are in the rainy season; which makes it worse.

The people I've come across here are very tight fisted. Most of them farm and fish but they never remember to give their corper any food stuff. We buy all our food stuff ourselves.
We are even the ones that give some of their children food when they are hungry and the worst part is that they keep coming almost everyday. I've started chasing them away sef.

My PPA which is a secondary school is to pay the corpers 3K monthly but they are failing in their responsibility. We always have to complain, write letters to their Chief before we are paid. I'm owed for 4months now; they are waiting for me to complain again.

So Brownlord, what point are you trying to make here?
