Islam › Re: Wife Beating Rules - Muslims Take Note by deols(f): 3:13pm On Nov 07, 2010
Sweetnecta:
The Qur'an does not endorse beating wife for insubordination. If the wife shows disloyalty and ill-conduct towards her husband, the recommended steps in sequence are - (1) verbal advice or admonition, (2) separating bed so as to suspend sexual relation, (3) have sexual intercourse (so as to win her over), and if that too fails to reconcile, then (4) a family council that is comprised of two arbiters, one from each family with the intention of setting things aright (4:34-35). [See, e.g., Al-Qur'an: a Contemporary Translation by Ahmed Ali, Princeton University Press, 1993] [Note also: The Arabic root word "daraba" being taken from the prosaic example "the stud-camel covered the she-camel." (Raghib, Al-Mufridat fi Gharib Al-Qur'an)].

These verses were revealed in relation to the wife of a Muslim who complained to the Prophet (S) that her husband had beaten her, and she wanted retaliation. If beating of wives were allowed in the Qur'an then it could not have prohibited it by saying, "If a wife fears cruelty or desertion on her husband's part, there is no blame on them if they arrange an amicable settlement between themselves; and such settlement is best; even though men's souls are swayed by greed. But if ye do good and practise self-restraint, God is well-acquainted with all that ye do." (Qur'an, 4:128) See also the verse: "Do not retain them (i.e., your wives) to harm them, " (Qur'an, 2:231).

I am, however, aware of the fact that because of a misinterpretation with the Arabic word Adribu in the Qur'an (derived from the word 'Daraba' which has multiple meanings, depending on the context) some translators have mistakenly assumed that the third option means scourge, or light beating.

This discussion once again demonstrates that relying on a mistranslation in English or other languages rather than the classical Arabic of the Qur'an, in which the Islamic scripture was revealed, can distort the actual meanings intended for the verse. This problem is also quite acute with many old scriptures that are open to so many interpretations. Little knowledge on religion can actually be dangerous! (My own word: And only an evil scholar will say it is permissible to beat a mate, a wife, a mother. And only men of injustice practice such acts).
Thanks for this. I pray Allah increases your knowledge.

juman:
What the father did was right because getting visa sometimes may be difficult and expensive for the father.

Exactly
How about that the father's responsibility is to see that his daughter is married the right way and to the right man. If he couldnt get the visa, ow about the daughter going down to see him. But this isnt the main issue, but that of distance

Marriage is supposed to curb zina. but how can it in this kind of situation?
Islam › Re: Our Understanding Of Islam by deols(f): 9:03am On Nov 07, 2010
dexmond, evn though ur questions are not directed @ me, here are my answers

- equality before the law-yes

- freedom of speech-Oh yes! evident by an hadith that a woman stood up to Umar, d second caliph of Islam and corrected him in public. Thereafter Umar told her she was right while he was wrong!

- freedom of the press- there was no press during the time of the prophet. Except otherwise proven by an hadith, the press should have freedom under Islamic states(but u would expect that they'r not allowed to broadcast pornography or anything lewd as that is what a religion, any religion should be against).

- freedom of religion- of course! The Qur'an says:' To you is ur religion and to me is mine' and in another verse,'there is n compulsion in religion'

- the right to own property- Yes again and again. Even women are allowed to own property and to spend what they own as they wish. They are also given a portion of their dead father, husband and close relatives'wealth.

- freedom of opinion and expression- just as in the press, if not lewd or wv any form of social vices

- the right to receive an education- the prophet said that education is the lost property of a muslim. and he said that education is compulsory on all muslims(whether male or female)

- freedom of movement-to where?no one is restricted to their homes. Visiting is in fact a virtue upheld by Islam.

- freedom from cruel and unusual punishment- depends on the definition of unusual. what is done in Nigeria might be unusual in China.Maybe when u'r specific,i'd give my ansa to dat

- the right to an attorney-in matters of divorce, a woman speaks thru a qaddi, that should mean attorney to you. Yes!

- the right to a fair trial by jury--yes, yes and yes!

Well, its the truth. So, no qualms.

These people do movies that portray the bad sides of America too.at least i know that 24 shows how Americans are very much involved in many of the terrorist acts on their soil and who's complaining about that.

War in seattle is another one about what the whites do against blacks, its a new world.let nollywood also tell the world what Nigerians see the whites as, and then the equation can be balanced,

I have heard this story before

He couldnt av known the shahada at that instance but he later became Muslim!

Of note is that Muslims are not divided on the compulsory aspect of islam. We all pray, fast, etc the same way, at the same time and in the same manner and language all over the world. Allah be praised for this.
Romance › Re: Rejections And Relationships by deols(f): 7:36am On Nov 07, 2010
MrsEve makes me laffffffffff-a lot.

On a more serious note, Men handle rejection better while doing the chase. But in relationships, men tend to do a whole lot that women put up with. Girls date guys who are already with other women, are rejected or say, neglected at some point and still stay in the relationship whereas men might not be able to take half of that.In this case, women handle it better.

Islam › Re: Muslim Girls Executed by deols(f): 7:29pm On Nov 06, 2010
The prophet (SAW) said that knowledge is the lost property of a Muslim. I dont think there's a better way than to make known the true teachings of Islam. an extensive da'wah that can cut across nations, get to people considering this path, already in it, or future victims of their recruitment.

We also have to stand strongly against them. We shouldnt keep waiting for the west to condemn these acts.Believing men and women are afterall referred to in the Qur'an as those who enjoin good and forbid evil.

May Allah help us to achieve these
