President Muhammadu Buhari’s 21 would-be ministers whose names he gave the Senate on Wednesday were unaware of their nominations, The Nation learnt yesterday. The President neither met nor hinted any of the nominees of their appointments, it was learnt. After shortlisting those he needed, according to a source, Buhari directed security agencies to conduct discreet investigations into their records. Those closer to him were not exempted, the source said. The Presidency yesterday directed all the nominees to submit their curriculum vitae. In 14 states yesterday, there was anxiety because no nominees were named. Some of the states are Ondo, Kogi, Abia, Enugu and Imo. A source, who spoke with our correspondent, said: “Most of the nominees announced on Wednesday were caught unawares because Buhari never sat any of them down or told them that they would be among his ministers. “Even though some of them had been coming to the Presidential Villa, he did not confide in them. “I can tell you that the President did not give assurance to ex-Governors Rotimi Amaechi, Kayode Fayemi, and Babatunde Fashola. Even as close as Lt.-Gen. Dambazzau and Sen. Hadi Sirika are to the President, they did not know that they would be in the cabinet. The President adopted suspense all through. That is his style. The source spoke of how some of the nominees nursed the ambition of being ministers but got frustrated after they could not read the President’s mind. “The President only directed security agencies to conduct discreet security checks on them for about one or two months. “The security checks were jealously guarded to prevent leakage. This was the nature of the appointment. “The President adopted intelligence approach in picking his team. A few others who were nominated by some highly-placed Nigerians, political leaders and governors could not scale through the discreet checks.” It was gathered that most of the nominees were only contacted yesterday morning to submit their curricular vitae at the Presidential Villa. Another source added: “You can see the transparency of the process adopted by the President. It was on Thursday morning that the Presidency started sending messages to most of the nominees to send their CVs. “Some of them sent their CVs through e-mail and others sent emissaries to Abuja to submit their credentials ahead of compilation for the Senate’s consideration from next week. “The President was sure of the pedigree of his cabinet members before asking them to bring their CVs.” It was gathered that a former Head of State wanted a particular candidate but his request was politely turned down by the President on account of age. Buhari asked the ex-leader to bring in a “younger person”. Five factors determined the appointment of ministers by the President. These are: strict adherence to principle of non-interference in choosing his cabinet, integrity or pedigree; selfless service; old acquaintances and less exposure to political influence. A highly-placed source in the Presidency said: “Buhari was his own man in choosing his cabinet, although he took certain factors into consideration. Those who came to advise him assisted in providing direction or guiding his mind. At a point, the APC leadership could not give exact situation of things. “He has done away with appointments based on favouritism, godafthers and egoism. “Apart from merit, Buhari gave ministerial slots to those who have the ability, those who can deliver and those he has trusted over the years, including those who worked with him in the former Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) and those in the trenches with him in the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC). He has rewarded selflessness, perseverance and loyalty.” There was anxiety yesterday in 14 states whose ministerial nominees have not been announced. ‘’There had been enquiries from the states. Political leaders from the states are mounting pressure on top officials of the Presidency to know their stand,’’ a source said. http://thenationonlineng.net/revealed-how-buhari-chose-his-nominees/

The Youth wing of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo has raised the alarm over what it called a well-articulated plan “by a certain fake Ohanaeze Youth Movement” to wreck havoc in Abuja during the celebration of Nigeria’s 55th Independence anniversary. In a statement made available to journalists in Enugu on Wednesday, the Ohanaeze Youth Council said the same group had earlier staged a “mock protest” at the National Assembly complex in Abuja on Tuesday. According to the statement signed by Ohanaeze Youth Council’s Deputy National Secretary, and the National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Stanley Nwanka and Hon. Obinna Adibe, respectively, it called on the Inspector General of Police and the Director-General of the Department of State Services, DSS, to monitor the activities of the said group. This is also as the OYC disowned the protest by the so-called Ohanaeze Youth Movement at the National Assembly, insisting that it was not involved in any such attempt to create tension in the nation’s polity. The statement read: “The Ohanaeze Youth Council Worldwide is pained and deeply worried by the well orchestrated plan by some elements to drag its name to the current happenings at the national assembly for selfish reasons. “We want to state categorically that at no time did the Ohanaeze Youth Council sit to discuss the current happenings at the National Assembly, neither did it sponsor or take part in any protest under whatever guise. “Therefore, we were indeed shocked and embarrassed over media reports that Ohanaeze Youth Movement staged protest at the National Assembly. It for this purpose that we alert the general public that there is nothing like Ohanaeze Youth Movement. The Youth wing of Ohanaeze Ndigbo is clearly identified as Ohanaeze Youth Council. “What happened at the National Assembly was a gathering of some criminal elements, who were transported to Abuja for some sinister motives. It beats our imagination why they chose to hide under the Ohanaeze Youth Council to satisfy their pay-masters. “No true Igbo man or woman could have gone to Abuja to engage in such a jamboree on the 29th of September, a day set aside as National Igbo-day celebration. As such, these people are not from Igbo land, neither are they members of the Ohanaeze Youths”. The statement called on security agencies to tighten their noose around leaders of the group with a view to nipping in the bud their plan to cause mayhem in Abuja. “We are aware that before that organized and politically sponsored protest, one of them, who claims to be a lawyer went from one television station to the other where he tried to sell his dummy to unsuspecting members of the public. “Having succeeded in deceiving the public for the first time, using the name of Ohanaeze Youths, their next plan is to launch a violent attack in Abuja in order to put Ndigbo in disrepute. We urge security operatives to go after them before they strike a second time”, the group further stated. http://dailypost.ng/2015/09/30/independence-day-we-have-uncovered-plots-to-wreck-havoc-in-abuja-ohanaeze/

Senators of the Peoples Democratic Party on Wednesday pledged their support for the current administration under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari. Speaking on behalf of the Senators during plenary, the minority leader of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio stated that Nigeria has recorded it’s longest democratic experience without interregnum for the consecutive 16 years, adding that it was the Peoples Democratic Party that effectively managed the nation to this level. “As we pledge our support for the success of this administration, I want to say that Nigeria has recorded it’s longest democracy in the last 16 years without interruption which all us know, the PDP effectively managed this far,” he said. Akpabio admonished the ruling party to see PDP as a trusted ally in matters of governance in order to move the nation forward, stressing that such was what is important at this auspicious time. He added that the All Progressives Congress should stop chasing away those who were willing to support the government of the day, adding that they should allow all arms of government to function properly. http://dailypost.ng/2015/09/30/pdp-senators-pledge-support-to-buharis-administration/

The Trade Union Congress, TUC, Enugu State chapter has insisted that Senate President, Bukola Saraki should resign. The Office of the Attorney General of the Federation is prosecuting Saraki for alleged false declaration of assets at the Code of Conduct Bureau. Some organisations, including labour unions, had already called for Saraki’s resignation from office. Chairman of the TUC in Enugu State, Chukwuma Igbokwe, while speaking with newsmen in Enugu maintained that Saraki should step aside, pending the conclusion of his trial at the CCT. Igbokwe said, “Any public officer that is found to be corrupt should vacate the position, or step aside to allow the judicial process take its course. If he continues to occupy the position, he can subvert the course of justice. “Now that he (Saraki) has taken his plea, he should step aside, pending when he is found guilty, or acquitted.” The labour leader added that the rule of law must be allowed to prevail in Saraki’s trial. Igbokwe said, “Nobody is above the law – he should vacate the office for now and wait for the rule of law to take its course. “In the current administration’s anti-corruption campaign, nobody should be spared. There should be no sacred cows and those in sensitive positions should step aside if they have been accused of corruption and taken to court.” http://dailypost.ng/2015/09/29/assets-declaration-saraki-must-resign-tuc-insists/

Police operatives attached to Pen Cinema police station in Agege, Lagos, on Sunday arrested a woman for trying to use twins belonging to Mrs. Ruth Uche for fraud. The woman was nabbed at College Road Estate, after she took the four- month old babies to a retired police commissioner’s house, claiming they were his grandchildren. The Nation gathered that the suspect, a mother of two, identified as Victoria, was introduced to the Uches by one of their neighbours. She was said to have deceived the children’s parents that she wanted them to appear in a film. Although Ruth’s husband, Emeka Uche, was said to have declined initially, he eventually consented to her request on the condition that his wife must go along with the children. But rather than taking them for the film shooting as claimed, she reportedly carried them to the big man’s house, who was overjoyed when he saw the children. Trouble, however, started after the suspect could not state the actual sex and age of the babies. Victoria, who had earlier taken pictures of the twins and sent to the man, had told him they were boys and two months old. But when the retired commissioner eventually saw the babies, he realised they were a boy and girl, and looked much older than two months. It was at that point that Mrs. Uche suspected something was amiss and told the man the babies’ actual age and sex. “I did not understand what was going on. I do not even know the place we went to. She has been pleading with us that she wanted to use the twins (youngest set) in a film. “My husband initially declined the proposal, but he later changed his mind since the woman said she wanted the children to act in a film. I begged my husband and he said he will only agree on the condition that I go with the woman. “So, around 11:30am on Sunday, we all left the house and came to Agege. She took us to one big man’s house. I do not know the place and she told me to sit down that it is the kids that will act the film. “But when I sat down, I heard the man asking her whether the children are two boys and how old they are. “She said two months and that they are boys. But I told the man that they are a boy and girl, and that they are four months old. “The man asked whose children and I told him they are my children, that the woman said she wanted to act film with them. “That was when the man started shouting, saying that she told him that my children are his grandchildren. The man said she has sent their picture before, saying his son impregnated a woman before travelling abroad. “The man now said that we were in it together and that I knew about it. I told him I do not know anything that the only thing she told us was that she wanted to act film with my babies. “Before she did not want to talk, but when people threatened her, she told them that I am innocent. The woman told them she wanted to get money from the man. That woman is a criminal,” Mrs. Uche said. http://thenationonlineng.net/woman-arrested-for-attempting-to-use-twins-for-fraud/ |

As preparations heat up ahead of the December 5 governorship election in Bayelsa State, the current governor of the state, Seriake Dickson has boasted that the All Progressives Congress cannot unseat him with its ‘noise.’ He said this, weekend, while addressing newsmen at the sidelines of the 2015 Ojude Oba festival in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State. Dickson, who was in company of a former governor of Bayesla State, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, said the APC was only making unnecessary noise against his administration. He said, “For all of us in Bayelsa, we know there is no challenge, contest or threat of any kind. All you have heard or read about us is all propaganda. There is no APC in Bayelsa to threaten us.” Disckson further called on people of the state and other Nigerians to disregard the criticisms and unfounded allegations against his party, the Peoples Democratic Party, by APC chieftains. He said, “I’m not here today for politics, I’m here to honour our father and also to celebrate with my friends here and others in the ‘regberegbes,’ particularly my own group, the Jagunmolus, and all the people of our country from far and near. “I am very delighted with the colourful cultural display that I have seen here today. This is what we have been preaching back then, we want our children to know about our tradition and culture and to make them know that our tradition still has dignity.” http://dailypost.ng/2015/09/28/bayelsa-guber-apcs-noise-cannot-remove-me-from-seat-dickson-boasts/
