Doctors at the Central Hospital in Benin City are battling to save the life of one Alex Aigbogun who was stabbed in the stomach by his landlord, simply identified as Enogieru. The victim was brought to the hospital at about 9:00am Wednesday by policemen in a Hilux van. Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred at about 12:00midnight, but the victim’s family has no vehicle or money to take him to the hospital. A neighbor to the victim said police told them there was no fuel in their vehicle to convey the victim to the hospital and that was why the victim was covered with cloth till daybreak. The incident occurred at No. 5 Ogiemwenken Street, Off St Saviour Road, Ikpoba Okha local government area of Edo State. A witness who gave his name as Peter Igbinosun said the landlord ran away after stabbing the victim. Igbinosun explained that trouble started on Tuesday night when both the landlord and tenant went to a joint to take a drink. He said the duo fought over a girl. “They came to me and I settled the quarrel. I even asked this man to sleep in my house but he refused.” “He stabbed him at about 12:00am and we didn’t have any money to go to the hospital. We went to the police and they said they don’t have fuel to take him to the hospital.” “The landlord has no wife and he used bottle to stab this tenant many times.” The state’s Police spokesman, DSP Stephen Onwochei, could not be reached for comments. http://thenationonlineng.net/landlord-stabs-tenant-over-lady-in-edo/ |
Detectives attached to the Cross River State Police Command yesterday arrested about 54 prostitutes and 58 men during a raid at a popular brothel called ‘Flour mill’ in the Calabar area of the state. The operatives were led by Governor Ben Ayade’s security adviser, Mr. Jude Ngaji. Ngaji while talking to journalist after the raid said the brothel which used to be a hotel has now become a notorious place for commercial sex workers in Calabar. The security adviser noted that the brothel constitutes a major security threat in the State as it is a point where criminals converge. He observed that the brothel was a den for criminals and hard drug merchants in the State. “Given the tourism status of Cross River, Gov. Ayade frowns on this despicable act where under aged girls are engaged in prostitution. He has therefore vowed to take drastic and decisive measures to stem the ugly trend. “He has directed that the place be raided and shut down forthwith. Consequently, the governor has warned that other persons or groups involved in this unwholesome practice should in their own interest desist henceforth or face the wrath of the law”, he said. Ngaji called on teenage girls to engage themselves in meaningful activities, adding that there is no law in Nigeria that legalises prostitution. “Each time you pass here at night, you find under-aged girls of about 13 and 14 years standing by and waiting for men. “This place has become an area of concern to the State and Cross Riverians. This place has become a Sodom and Gomorrah in Cross River and the raid was carried out to stop prostitution and criminality in the state. All the girls that were caught here are prostitutes and some of them were caught in a compromising position. No law legalizes prostitution in Nigeria. The girls would be tried in court and we will ensure that they are returned back to their respective states,’’ Ngaji averred. http://dailypost.ng/2015/09/23/54-prostitutes-arrested-as-police-raid-brothel-in-calabar/

•Seeks N300b general damages Former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has sued the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), its State Chairman Chief Felix Obuah and two others – Jerry Needam and Chris Konkwo – for false allegations at an Abuja High Court. Amaechi, the former Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), is also demanding N300 billion as general damages done to him and the defamation of his character, reputation and person. Needam, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Rivers PDP Chairman, is also the publisher of a local newspaper, National Network; Konkwo is the Editor of the newspaper, said to be a propaganda medium for the PDP and Governor Nyesom Wike. The defendants (PDP, Obuah, Needam and Konkwo) alleged that Amaechi owned foreign bank accounts and embezzled funds belonging to the state government. The Rivers PDP, in a statement on August 6 and August 21, alleged that Amaechi stole $757 million (N80 billion) of Rivers State funds stashed in an account in his name at Bancorp Bank in Minnesota, United States of America (U.S). Rivers PDP also alleged that the former Rivers governor embezzled millions of dollars belonging to Rivers State and stashed it away in other foreign accounts, including a bank in Switzerland. The party alleged that Amaechi’s various foreign bank accounts were revealed and blown open by Christiane Amanpour of America’s Cable News Network (CNN). The Rivers PDP also claimed that Bancorp Bank, Minnesota, had written to President Muhammadu Buhari that part of the funds was to purchase a home for Amaechi in the U.S, adding that the bank (Bancorp) intended to return the stolen fund to Nigeria. Amaechi’s media office, in an online statement yesterday, said: “In the fresh suit, filed before an Abuja High Court, FCT, Amaechi stated that each of the malicious publications by the defendants is untrue and false, motivated by ill-will and without any foundation in truth whatsoever. “The defendants made the libellous publications after the PDP failed the presidential election (of March 28, 2015) and with a view to rubbishing him (Amaechi) in the eyes of right-thinking members of the society and the persons to whom the libellous publications have been made.” In his statement of claims in the suit, Amaechi said he did not steal $757 million (N80 billion) from Rivers State and did not stash it away at Bancorp Bank in Minnesota in U.S or Switzerland. Amaechi said: “The Bancorp Bank in Minnesota in U.S did not at any time reveal that the plaintiff (Amaechi) embezzled or misappropriated or connived in the embezzlement and misappropriation of money meant for Rivers State people, amounting to $757 million (N80 billion) and stashed it away in his name with Bancorp Bank in Minnesota in U.S. “The Bancorp Bank, Minnesota, U.S did not write and did not communicate President Buhari of any $757 million dollars allegedly looted by the plaintiff (Amaechi) that is kept with it and in Switzerland, since no such money was ever looted by the plaintiff. “The plaintiff did not steal funds belonging to Rivers State and did not lodge them in any private foreign accounts. The plaintiff did not admit that he lodged and domiciled in his name in an account in Bancorp Bank, Minnesota, U.S any money, as alleged by the defendants. “The plaintiff did not lodge $757 million or N80 billion in the bank account belonging to him and none was revealed or blown open by Christiane Amanpour of CNN.” The former governor also said since the libellous publications by the PDP, Obuah and two others to the public, he had been inundated, bombarded and confronted by many persons, who expressed lack of respect, loss of faith in him and who no longer regarded him as trustworthy. He added that he was being viewed as a common criminal. Amaechi said he had been confronted by disrespectful people, arising from the false accusations. The former governor denied committing the offences the PDP, Obuah and two others accused him of committing. Amaechi said: “By the many publications, the plaintiff has been seriously injured in his credit, character and reputation and has been brought into public scandal, odium, contempt and his person, character and integrity lowered in the estimation of right-thinking members of the society. The publications are false and most disparaging of the person of the plaintiff. “The defendants have widely further circulated the malicious publications to the public on the Internet. The wide and general circulations of the malicious publications have exposed the plaintiff to heavy and irredeemable ridicule, public odium, contempt and disparagement in the eyes of right-thinking and reasonable members of the society, including the persons already pleaded and other persons yet unknown and who will also be called upon to testify in the proceedings. “The defendants have continued with the republication, recirculation and widespread republishing and distribution of the libellous publications to the public through the Internet, leading to a deluge of enquiries from the public and well-wishers, who have severally confronted the plaintiff with the very wild allegations of the defendants and to which plaintiff denied any looting or ownership of any looted funds or looting of public funds of Rivers State.” http://thenationonlineng.net/alleged-corruption-amaechi-sues-pdp-others-for-false-claims/

Former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode has reacted to the abduction of Chief Olu Falae. The former Secretary to the Federal Government was abducted on Monday by suspected herdsmen at his farm, about 15 kilometers to his residence along Oba-Ile road, Akure, the state capital. Fani-Kayode in a statemet said “The abduction of Chief Olu Falae is not only unacceptable but it also an exceptionally dangerous development.” “I say this because he is not only an elder-statesman of our country but he is also one of the most revered leaders of Afenifere and the south-west. “We cannot sit by idly and watch our leaders and elders being endangered, shamed and humiliated in this way. It is the governments job to keep us all safe and secure and they are failing in that duty. “I call on the President and our security agencies to effect the expeditious and immediate release of Chief Olu Falae. They must rescue him from these vagabonds and vandals as soon as possible before things get out of hand. “Let it be clearly understood that if anything happens to him and if he doesn’t come home hale and hearty, we will hold the Federal Government responsible and there will be consequences. “Those that are in power would do well to take what I have said very seriously,” he added. http://dailypost.ng/2015/09/22/there-will-be-consequences-if-falae-is-not-freed-fani-kayode-tells-fg/

The Rivers State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has said Chief Nyesom Wike of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was spending his last days in office as Governor of Rivers State. The party was reacting to the statement credited to PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, who was quoted to be talking about the failure of PDP and INEC counsels to appear before the Rivers State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal on Friday, September 18: Metuh said, “Even if our lawyers and witnesses didn’t appear at the Rivers Tribunal today and the remaining days, it doesn’t stop us PDP from winning at the judgment. But should we fail at judgment, we shall win even above 1.5 million votes in Rivers State re-run Governorship and other elections.” Rivers APC in a statement issued Monday in Port Harcourt and made available by its Chairman, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya, dismissed Metuh’s position as mere day-dreaming. The party said: “While we do not wish to comment on the likely outcome of the current sitting of the Rivers Guber Election Tribunal since the case is sub judice, we find Chief Metuh’s position laughable because the evidence before the tribunal indicates that Chief Wike is spending his final days in office as Rivers State Governor. Just like PDP, we as a political party are equally eagerly looking forward to a re-run of the Rivers State governorship election. Contrary to the empty boast of Metuh that PDP shall win even above 1.5 million votes in the envisaged re-run elections, we make bold to tell him that PDP died in Rivers State the day former Governor Chibuike Amaechi in November 2013 led all those who mattered in the party to join the APC and take a front seat in the vanguard for Nigeria’s political emancipation. We are convinced that our candidate, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, shall win the expected re-run guber polls with a landslide as he has the full support of the good people of Rivers State.” According to the statement, Rivers APC sympathizes with Chief Metuh in his difficult new role as an unprepared spokesman of the opposition, telling him to prepare for a big shock as Wike can never be elected by the Rivers State people in ”any free and fair election devoid of violence, killing and rigging as Rivers people do not only know him but also know what he stands for. “Instead of dreaming of winning the envisaged re-run election, we expect him (Wike) to explain to the world how he intends to defend the over 100 Rivers people that were murdered to install him as Care-Taker Governor of Rivers State by greedy INEC REC, Dame Gesila Khana, and other corrupt INEC officials who cannot defend their immoral and illegal actions of 1.5 million acclaimed voters is bigger than 273,000 accredited voters in the Register. “To us, the Biblical book of Hosea Chapter Eight Verse Seven, ‘For They Have sown the Wind and Shall Reap the Whirlwind’ captures the inescapable fate of Chief Wike and his collaborators. They have no one else to blame but themselves, for they have sown the wind and shall reap the whirlwind.” http://dailypost.ng/2015/09/21/wike-is-spending-his-last-days-in-office-apc/

President Muhammadu Buhari has washed his hands off the current travails of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki. In a statement by Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President,he rebuffed insinuation that President Buhari was behind the ongoing trial of the Senate President by the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) and the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT). He said such suggestions were unacceptable, especially as views that the trial can only be from an external instigation are uninformed. “There is no place in law that the Bureau and the Tribunal should take instructions from any quarters. “As an independent institution equal to any superior court of record, the tribunal is set up by the constitution to determine the issue of default, false declaration or forgery in assets declaration. “This therefore is purely a judicial process and has nothing to do with the presidency”, said Shehu. He added: “If anyone has an axe to grind with what they are doing, they should do it in a judicial manner by challenging those actions in a proper court of law. Let them hire a good team of lawyers to prove their innocence. “Government has no desire to persecute anybody. The President has vowed to respect the rule of law and this is what he is doing by staying out of this matter. He has said times without number that the war against corruption has no sacred cows. “Even if the President wants to help, there is no way he can do anything. Is he going to ask the judge to stop the trial? “It is purely a judicial process, the type of which are routinely dealt with by the CCB and the CCT. There are many cases like this that are going on. “The President has sworn to an oath to protect the constitution and will not violate that oath?” http://dailypost.ng/2015/09/21/i-have-no-hand-in-sarakis-ordeal-buhari/
