The absence of an Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, and Minister of Justice has been identified as what is delaying the prosecution of ex-government officials who served under the Goodluck Jonathan administration and their accomplices in the private sector for corruption charges. A presidency source, who confirmed this to ThisDay, noted that preliminary investigations had enabled the Buhari administration to identify some ex-government officials – mostly former ministers and heads of parastatals — as well as other persons in the public or private sector who helped to conceal their ill-gotten wealth for prosecution. He continued that the list of ex-government officials cuts across mainly the oil and gas sector, among other sectors, but their prosecution would only start in earnest once an Attorney General who is “constitutionally recognized as the chief law officer is appointed by the president.” He declined however to mention the ex-government officials or the number of persons who might be prosecuted by the Nigerian government. The presidency source noted that the dragnet would only focus on those who were once in the executive arm of government while any corrupt cases involving former governors, their aides and members of the legislature would be handled by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC). “The reason the attorney general is required for the prosecution of former government officials is because some of the cases will require the assistance of overseas governments to help in tracing where the loot may have been moved, the loot recovery process, and extraditions that can only be handled by the AGF,” he explained. Buhari, who is set to release his list of ministerial nominees in the next few days, will by that be unveiling his AGF and Minister of Justice. According to presidency sources, frontline contenders for the post include human rights activist and lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN) from Ekiti State; former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) from Ondo State; and a former Legal Adviser of the defunct Congress for Progressives Change (CPC) who also served as part of Buhari’s legal team during all his presidential election petitions against successive presidents, Abubakar Malami (SAN) from Kebbi State. http://dailypost.ng/2015/09/14/buhari-to-begin-prosecution-of-corrupt-officials-after-emergence-of-attorney-general/

oluwaSmith1:Lolzz, calling Fayose noise-maker? I hope you are ready for a fight today... |
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has berated Governor Ayo Fayose for his outburst on the search of the Akwa Ibom State Government House by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS). The party, in its reaction to Fayose’s advertorials, maintained that the constitution provided no immunity for any Government House. It said only embassies, high commissions and other diplomatic missions enjoy diplomatic immunity. Its Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun, in a statement yesterday said the DSS operatives acted in the nation’s interest. Olatunbosun said: “Let us educate Fayose that a Government House is not the same as an embassy or foreign mission that enjoy physical immunity from security activities by local armed forces. “While a governor enjoys immunity from physical and body security search, the same cannot be said of the Government House because no law in the constitution says the Government House should be a breeding ground for insurrection and insurgency. “We suspect Fayose as an accomplice in the Akwa Ibom arms stockpiling saga, otherwise there is no reason for him to be edgy and agitated in his response.” The APC spokesman berated the governor for trying to whip up public sentiment against DSS operatives, who performed their legitimate duties to secure the country. “No amount of blackmail would stop security agents from performing their legal duties against violent and corrupt governors. “We know why Fayose is blackmailing DSS. Ekiti Government House is home to thugs and criminals. They were used during the last elections to attack the opponents. “We call on DSS to be alert to its responsibilities of maintaining internal cohesion and security integrity across the country and should comb everywhere, including Aso Rock, if need be, to ensure that no one constitutes himself into a security risk.” Urging Ekiti people to be wary of Fayose’s inciting statements, the APC spokesman said: “Our party urges Ekiti people not to fall for Fayose’s attempt to use them as cannon fodder to preserve his illegal activities in government. “Fayose has kept all his children abroad while he incites and distributes weapons to the children of the poor to fight to defend his illegalities. “Fayose cannot survive in a society where the law works, that is why he keeps armed criminals permanently in the Government House for use to keep himself in power without opposition. “The Akwa Ibom example has put the governor on edge and so he is trying whatever he can to discredit the DSS and pre-empt the security agency from interrogating his illegal activities.” http://thenationonlineng.net/dss-apc-condemns-fayoses-outburst/

The All Progressives Congress, Rivers State Chapter, has accused Governor Nyesom Wike of plotting to bribe tribunal judges with N10 billion. In a statement issued by Chris Finebone, the Rivers State Publicity Secretary of the APC, he said the alleged move was as a result of the PDP’s poor showing in the tribunal sitting in Abuja. According to the statement, “Following a spate of recent negative outcomes for the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the various Election Petition Tribunals sitting in Abuja, the Governor has commenced negotiations to borrow a whopping N10 billion from Zenith Bank PLC for the sole purpose of bribing judges of the Tribunals, Appeal Courts amongst others. “To date, the Governor has collected a total of about N100 billion comprising Federal allocations, Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), balance in the Reserve Fund and other sundry sums left in the State’s various accounts with the banks by 29th May. “The aforementioned sum is exclusive of the earlier N30 billion obtained from banks by the governor since he assumed office. In sum total, about N130 billion has passed through the hands of the governor in 3 months with only a few projects of his predecessor he is completing and some cosmetic asphalting and pothole filling of some streets to show for it. If he borrows additional N10 billion from Zenith Bank as he has already decided to do, Rivers people and our next generation shall have been enslaved further to the tune of N40 billion as loan before the tribunal shows the governor the way out of Government House, Port Harcourt. “Indeed, the APC is saddened at the carte blanche Nyesom Wike has handed to himself to recklessly borrow in the name of the people without consideration for the present and future generations of Rivers people.” He added that “With the Governor as Commissioner for Works, Due Process Office and Site Engineer all rolled into one, the world can better imagine the big scam going on in Rivers State by a master underhand deal-maker as Governor. “But most worrisome to the APC is the fact that information available to us indicates that the Governor made up his mind to borrow the N10 billion from Zenith Bank which he will keep exclusively to bribe judges every step of the way especially now that news coming to the Governor from the tribunals sitting in Abuja is not that cheery to his ears. “We recall that his earlier attempt to approach the Chief Justice of Nigeria [CJN] with a view to compromising the latter ended in fiasco as the APC exposed his antics before he could get close to the revered CJN. “After that unpalatable incident, we believed [though wrongly] that his disastrous experience with the CJN would have taught him a lesson but from what we now know, Nyesom Wike has learnt nothing from the CJN debacle as he has since devised other means of compromising some of the men of the hallowed realm. Our happiness is that some of the judges place premium on their reputation and name and care little about the filthy lucre the Governor dangles at them. “The APC will not forget that Nyesom Wike prides in his ability to compromise any living being as long as the person has a price. He boasts of his escapades with men of the judiciary; cavorts with court registrars, clerks and even bailiffs. We are sure he believes that he is the best at his game the way late Pablo Escobar saw himself in exaggerated terms in Colombia as a drug warlord. But there is always one mountain too high to climb for mortal man. “Therefore, the APC would like to appeal to well-meaning Rivers elders and leaders-of-thought to prevail on Gov. Nyesom Wike against incessant and needless high-interest borrowing he has embarked on for his selfish desires as this has catastrophic outcome for the future of our people and generations yet unborn.” http://dailypost.ng/2015/09/11/tribunals-rivers-apc-allege-wike-is-set-to-bribe-judges-with-n10bn/

Reports from Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, has it that thieves have invaded houses of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, delegates who are expected to vote for aspirants contesting the party’s governorship primaries. A delegate, In Lokoja Local Government Area’s Ward C, Suleiman Ibrahim, informed DAILY POST that his residence was ransacked and family members subjected to thorough search in a bid to collect the supposed money that might have been given out by the party. DAILY POST correspondent in Lokoja reports that postponement of the primaries has thrown a lot of people off balance, especially the delegates and anxious party members. Several delegates, especially those outside the state capital, complained of harassments by hoodlums who believe they have been given loads of money to vote for certain aspirants. “No body gave us money because it was not clear if the primary election was going to hold”, Adejo Onoku, a delegate from the Eastern flank of the state lamented. Thugs were spotted around the stadium area close to Lugard Road, keeping vigil on the delegates who might stray to spend part of their largess at the many bars in the area. http://dailypost.ng/2015/09/10/kogi-pdp-delegates-attacked-by-thieves/
