A member, Peoples Democratic Party Board of Trustees, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, has said his party will hang the portrait of President Muhammadu Buhari in its national headquarters at the Wadata Plaza, in Abuja. He spoke in response to an earlier comment by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh. “We will never hang his portrait in this office, because President Buhari is not known to our party,” he said on Tuesday. “He is not a leader of our party and, therefore, we will never put his portrait here. We are a political party, very partisan and therefore, we are not going to hide that,” “Can you find out if the APC had the portrait of former President Jonathan in their office before he was defeated? That is just it,” he quipped. But speaking to The Punch yesterday, Babatope said the President’s portrait should be hanged although the PDP leadership was trying to make a point by not hanging it. His words: “The President represents Nigeria. He does not represent the narrow and parochial interest of the All Progressives Congress. He represents the larger interest of the people. “The PDP may be making some points and I think Nigerians should hear them out before crucifying the party. “The PDP will hang President Buhari’s portrait. Nigerians have spoken through the ballot. They’ve shown their preference for Buhari and we have accepted their verdict. “We shouldn’t really have any problems with the portrait of Buhari. The APC should not try to mislead Nigeria.” . http://dailypost.ng/2015/09/10/pdp-bot-member-opposes-metuh-explains-why-party-will-hang-buharis-portrait/

No fewer than seven persons, including a female police officer and ADC to the First Lady of a northern state (names withheld), were injured in the wee hours of Wednesday, when the popular Mekaval Hotel located in Effurun-Warri, Delta State collapsed. It was gathered that the collapse hotel was similar to the collapse of the Synagogue of All Nation Church in Lagos, as the victims were mostly indigenes of neighboring state who besieged the city seeking salvation at the Christ Mercy Land Church, headed by Pastor Jeremiah Fufeyin, popularly called ‘Ijaw TB Joshua’ by followers. Although the cause of the collapse was yet unknown at the time of this report Wednesday, the Deputy Governor of the state, Mr Kingsley Otuaro, a lawyer and deacon, hinted of possible structural defect. Otuaro, who raced to the scene of the incident at about 10:45am, immediately ordered the closure of the hotel buildings, as well as the standing two-storey main wing of the hotel, as a precautionary measure to avert further loss of lives. He said, “The state government has ordered that the hotel be closed immediately to avert further loss of lives. We are going to send engineers straight away. “It is very possible that there have been some structural defect ab initio during construction works because that place seems to be a waterlogged area and maybe the proper engineering works were not done.” Otuaro spoke with newsmen at the Divine Grace Clinic, where five of the victims, including a pair of brothers and three females were being treated, decried the incident and described it as devastating. He laments the devastation and trauma suffered by some of the lodgers at the hotel, including a lady from Bayelsa simply identified as Evangelist Florence, who spent over seven hours under rubles of the collapsed hotel. While stressing that it wasn’t time for bulk-passing, the Deputy Governor assured that competent engineers were on their way to the site to assess the immediate and remote causes of the building collapse. He commended public-spirited individuals and organizations like the Red Cross which promptly responded to distress call and assured that the state government would pick up the medical bills of the victims some of whom were being treated at the nearby Divine Grace Clinic. Otuaro, who also visited five of the victims, thanked God for their safe evacuation from the scene and assured them of the support of the state government. He advised inhabitants of buildings close to the scene to evacuate them pending examination by professional to ascertain the state of the structures. Nevertheless, The Nation independent check revealed that the victims of Wednesday disaster were mainly religious pilgrim from outside the state, who were in Effurun for a church programme organized by Pastor Fufeyin The ADC to the northern state First Lady, who was simply identified as Adeza, told Otuaro that she hit the city from Abuja on Tuesday afternoon in search of solution to some family problem. The lady, who hails from Agbede, Edo state said, “I am a Muslim, but I came here to see the man of God. Only recently I lost my elder brother who was in the Army and so many things had been happening in my family. So I came here for prayers.” The lady, who occupied Room 206 before the unfortunate incident, said at the time of her rescue she was still hearing voices from under the rubles from the collapsed hotel building, hinting that more people could still be trapped underground. Her view with contrary to those expressed that by the hotel management that the seven recorded lodgers had all been rescued alive at about 11am on Wednesday. Speaking in the same vein, another victim, who simply identified herself as Evangelist Florence, told our reporter that she came from Yenagoa, Bayelsa state for the church’s programme. “Immediately I got into town I went to the mountain for prayers. It was after the prayer that I came to Mekaval. “As I was sleeping, at about 2am I heard a sound creaking sound and everything came down, I tried to unlock my door but I couldn’t; it seemed like the door was locked outside. I was under the ground till about 7am when I was rescue,” she added. http://thenationonlineng.net/scores-wounded-as-hotel-collapses-in-delta/ cc: lalasticlala, dominique, Sissy3

Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday morning claimed that Nigeria is gradually sliding into dictatorship under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari. Rising from a meeting of the PDP Governors’ Forum (PGF), held in the inner chamber of the Bayelsa State Governor’s office, Government House, Yenagoa, the governors decried the activities of the Department of State Security (DSS). After the meeting that lasted for over two hours, the governors led by their chairman and Governor of Ondo State, Mr. Olusegun Mimiko, condemned the alleged invasion of Akwa Ibom State Government House by the DSS. Reading the communiqué to journalists, Mimiko, said the action of the DSS was against the spirit, ethos, values and fundamental tenets of democratic norms and tradition especially with the existence of a duly elected and inaugurated governor of the state. He said: “We insist that the trend must stop henceforth. No democracy survives without a viable opposition in any part of the world and we must also remember to remind the APC members that they are the real beneficiaries of the liberal democratic ethos of the PDP. “We once more advise the DSS to preoccupy itself with the task of ensuring internal security and desist from daily harassing and intimidating members of the opposition. “We implore the international community, the civil society organisations and human rights activists to call the APC- led Federal Government to order and to insist that it respects the well entrenched democratic tradition. “We all have a duty to prevent what looks to us like a steady slide of this country into dictatorship.” Mimiko said the PDP governors were disturbed, alarmed and shocked by what he described as desecration, adding that the action of the DSS was an assault on democracy. He said the Akwa Ibom incident spelt doom and posed serious danger to the country’s fledgling democracy. He said the development was one of the continuous attempts by the APC-controlled government to stifle the opposition. Two governors and four deputy governors out of the 13 PDP-controlled states attended the meeting. The governors present at the meeting were Mimiko and the host, Seriake Dickson. http://thenationonlineng.net/nigeria-sliding-into-dictatorship-pdp-governors/

A 20-year-old scavenger has been given 12 strokes of the cane by an Abuja Magistrate’s Court for stealing a compressor at Byazhin, Kubwa in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Abdulahi Mohammed of Byazhin road, who was charged with theft, an offence that contradicts section 287 of the penal code, was also sentenced to two weeks imprisonment with an option of N2, 000 fine. The prosecutor, Mr. Babajide, told the court that the complainant, one Zachang Aji Sala of Byazhin, on August 24, reported at the Kubwa police station, how the accused stole his compressor valued at N12, 000, kept inside his shop. He said the accused was, however, arrested with the item while attempting to escape. When the charge was read to the accused, he pleaded guilty and was ordered to be given 12 stokes of the cane by Magistrate Mohammed Kutigi. In a related case, three scavengers were arraigned before an Abuja Grade 1 Area Court for allegedly deflating the car tyres of the Divisional Police Officer, Dutsen Alhaji and denying her access to the car. The accused, all of Dutsen Alhaji, were charged with joint act, mischief and inciting disturbance. The police prosecutor, Arziki Kaura, told the court that the complainant, ASP Emmanuel Abba, O/C Surveillance Team ‘A,’ attached to Dutsen Alhaji Police Station, on August 29, arrested the accused when CSP Aisha Yusuf, DPO, Dutsen Alhaji, was invited by the district head of community for a meeting. He said the accused conspired and deflated her vehicle tyres, damaged and removed the plate number, and in the process, denied her access to the car before they were arrested. When the charges were read to the accused, they pleaded not guilty and were granted bail in the sum of N100, 000 each by the judge, Mohammed Marafa with a reasonable surety who must be resident within the court’s jurisdiction. The case was adjourned to September 30. http://www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/city-news/scavenger-receives-12-strokes-for-stealing-compressor/109801.html

A 16-year-old teenager, identified as Timehin Jinadu, was Monday morning, reportedly burnt to death when a duplex of four bedrooms at the Lekki area of Lagos, caught fire. P.M News reports that the fire started at about 2am on Monday in a duplex at 35C, Ajiran Road, Agungi area of Lekki. The boy’s family was said to be asleep when the fire began. Director, Lagos State Fire Service, Rasak Fadipe said the fire service station was called around 2am and that it responded promptly to the call and succeeded in rescuing three people from the duplex of four bedrooms. “The body of a 16-year old Timehin was discovered at the bathroom roasted. It might be that the boy ran to the bathroom to escape from the fire but had nowhere to go to after that,” Fadipe confirmed. Fadipe divulged that the fire was caused by power surge after light was restored in the night to the area. The Director also added that the father of the boy and two other children inhaled smoke which made them unconscious and had to be rushed to the hospital. http://dailypost.ng/2015/09/07/teenage-boy-burnt-to-death-in-lekki/
