Deputy Leader of the Senate, Senator Bala Na’Allah, on Tuesday, declared that any attempt to pad the 2017 budget will be strongly resisted. He said that the National Assembly would not permit any padding in the budget. Senator Na’Allah said this when the Rector and officials of the Nigerian Aviation College of Technology, appeared before the Senate Committee on Aviation to defend the agency’s 2017 budget. Last year, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, Hon. Abdulmumunin Jibrin accused the leadership of the House of padding the budget. Na’Allah said anything not captured in the original 2017 budget document submitted to the National Assembly should be resubmitted in the supplementary budget of the Federal Government. According to him, “We will not add anything that was not added in the original budget. If you want to increase the budgetary allocation, you have to send a supplementary budget. If we do that, you will accuse us of budget padding. We will not allow it. “We want to ensure that public money is spend judiciously. We want to be sure that whatever we are approving for anything is what will buy the same thing. We have looked at your budget. We will do everything possible to give you what you want. “We will also take out some money which we think you do not need. Since you are refleeting, you must tell us what your intentions are and what you intend to do with the old ones. Next week Thursday, we are going to the aviation college to see the state of the runway to see what is happening there.” Cc: lalasticlala, Mynd44 http://dailypost.ng/2017/01/31/will-resist-attempts-pad-2017-budget-senator-naallah/

Activist lawyer, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, has dragged President Muhammadu Buhari, the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, before a Federal High Court in Lagos, over the non-confirmation of the acting Chief Justice of the Federation, CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen. Also enjoined in the suit is the President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki, the National Judicial Council, NJC, and the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, Justice Abubakar Malami, SAN. The Lagos-based lawyer is praying the court to prevail on the President and his vice to forward the name of Onnoghen to the senate for confirmation. The activist lawyer sought an “order of injunction to restrain the President and the Vice-President from appointing another candidate for presentation to the Senate, for the office of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, apart from Hon. Justice Walter Onnoghen, who is the most senior justice of the Supreme Court and who has already been selected and recommended by the National Judicial Council.” He also prayed the court to stop the Senate from “accepting, entertaining, deliberating upon or considering the nomination of any other candidate that may be forwarded to it by the President and the Vice-President, apart from Hon Justice Walter Onnoghen, who has already been selected by the National Judicial Council.” He also seeks an order of injunction to restrain the NJC from entertaining any request from the President and the Vice-President, to consider another candidate for the office of the CJN order than Onnoghen, who was already selected. Adegboruwa prayed the “court to forthwith direct Hon Justice Walter Onnoghen to assume and take over and be performing and discharging the duties and functions of the office of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, until such a time that the President would agree to forward his name to the Senate for confirmation or until he retires at the mandatory age of 70 years.” In a 42 paragraph affidavit supporting his suit, Adegboruwa traced the history of the previous appointments of other CJN, stressing that it has never been the style of the executive to leave a vacuum in the highest judicial office of the land. According to Adegboruwa, “Upon the coming into force of the 1999 Constitution, the President has no discretion in the choice of candidate to occupy the office of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, other than the person selected and recommended to him by the National Judicial Council. Accusing the President of “negative bais against the judiciary which he had openly declared as his headache,” the lawyer stressed that Buhari was “deliberately withholding the appointment of Justice Onnoghen in order to destabilize the judiciary and to force him into compulsory retirement, being a Christian from Southern part of Nigeria.” He alleged that the President had a “hidden agenda to perpetuate civilian dictatorship and to implement his ethnic and religious agenda,” by frustrating the first CJN from the Southern part of the country in the past 30 years. Adegboruwa cited instances of the refusal of the President to obey the order of the ECOWAS Court to release former National Security Adviser, NSA, Col Sambo Dasuki(rtd) the order of the Federal High Court to release Shite leader, Ibrahim El Zakzaky, as precedents of the preference of the President for a system of lawlessness, contempt and total disregard for the judiciary and the rule of law. The court is yet to fix a date for the hearing of the suit. Cc: lalasticlala, Mynd44 http://dailypost.ng/2017/01/31/lagos-lawyer-adegboruwa-sued-buhari-osinbajo-others/

Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki and his lower Chamber counterpart, Hon. Yakubu Dogara have denied collecting money from the Federal Capital Development Authority as rent for official accommodation for the National Assembly leadership. The Senate President dismissed as outright falsehood a claim in a report credited to a group known as Citizen Action to Take Back Nigeria (CATBAN) and published by an online medium. It was alleged that the Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, Speaker, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, and their deputies, Senator Ike Ekweremadu and Rt. Hon. Lasun Yusuff collected money from the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) as rent for their accommodation. But in a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the Senate President on Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, he stated that though the four presiding officers were legally entitled to official accommodation, they have been living in their personal residences and do not get paid by any Federal Government agency. “There is no truth to the claim by this group. In fact, during the preparation of the budget, the Senate President and Speaker directed the FCDA to remove the 10 billion Naira voted for the construction of their official residence to save cost. “The current leadership of the National Assembly will not be part of any illegal payment to anybody”, stated Olaniyonu. .As Osinbajo, Dogara, Okorocha meet Olalekan Adetayo, Abuja The Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, on Monday met behind closed doors with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara; and the Chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum, Rochas Okorocha. The meeting which lasted about 30minutes was held inside Osinbajo’s office at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. At the end of the meeting, Dogara did not speak with journalists. He said he only accompanied Okorocha who is the Imo State Governor to visit Osinbajo. Speaking on the call for Igbo President, the governor told State House correspondents that that could only come up at the end of the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari. He said, “What I do know is that Ndigbo should talk about Presidency after President Muhammadu Buhari. I think we should support this government. “President Muhammadu Buhari has a tenure to work for: four or eight years. “According to the zoning arrangement and everybody should follow the zoning although I am not an advocate of zoning.” Okorocha said efforts were ongoing to reposition the ruling All Progressives Congress in the South East. He reiterated his position that some governors in the zone would be joining APC soon. He said, “The APC as a party is strong in the South East. We are trying to rebuild the party and redefine leadership so there will be no confusion. “As to whether the APC in the South East is in disarray as the case has always been, we want to have a united party in the South East. “We are hopeful from all discussions that about two governors will be joining us in the South East to strengthen the party. “Right now, we have agreed that Senator Ken Nnamani should take a lead of the party in the South East to enable us have a common understanding, along with other leaders like Chief Jim Nwobodo.” When confronted with the fact that some governors had denied his claim, Okorocha said, “I don’t think it is true, but if it is true it is probably because it is not time. It could be because I spoke when they were not yet ready.” http://punchng.com/igbo-should-talk-about-presidency-after-buhari-okorocha/ https://static.pulse.ng/img/incoming/origs5578423/3646366816-w644-h960/Okorocha.jpg |

Season of Arrest ![]() |
Bayo Akinloye A human rights group, Committee for the Protection of Peoples Mandate, has called on security agencies to arrest Senator Buruji Kashamu for threatening public peace. The rights group said it was shocked by the senator’s statement on Sunday, to the intent that people would die before he could be extradited to the United States to face trial. “We condemn in strong terms the inciting, irresponsible, barbaric, ‘unparliamentary’ statement and threats to national peace and security credited to Senator Buruji Kashamu, over his indictment for drug-related offences by the US appeal court and the order for his extradition to face trial,” a statement issued on Monday by CPPM’s Executive Chairman, Nelson Ekujumi, said. Kashamu on Sunday had said, “One has to kill one, because I am not ready to go anywhere. Before that happens, maybe about three, four or five people will die.” He also vowed that any attempt to “abduct” him by the US government would be met with violence; adding that he planned to engage the services of members of the Oodua Peoples Congress for protection. The CPPM pointed out that Kashamu’s public outburst was provocative and unbecoming of a senator of the federal republic. Ekujumi noted that the senator’s action was a denigration and an attempt to intimidate the law enforcement agencies from discharging their constitutional duties, as well as an assault on the Nigerian Constitution. “If Senator Buruji Kashamu, who is a member of our highest lawmaking institution, the Senate, feels strongly about a judgment of the court, whether in Nigeria or in any part of the world, one would have expected him, as a custodian of the legitimate mandate of the Nigerian people, to be civil, responsible and sensitive to explore civilised means of seeking redress, rather than threatening public peace by threats of violence. “Therefore, we call on the leadership of the Senate to immediately summon Senator Buruji Kashamu to appear before the appropriate committee for acts unbecoming of a senator, and for bringing the image of the National Assembly into disrepute. “We equally call for his immediate arrest,” Ekujumi said. http://punchng.com/arrest-kashamu-threatening-kill-cppm/ https://thenationonlineng.net/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/Buruji-Kashamu.jpg |

The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Olasupo Ayokunle, has disclosed that the body will not be sending an entourage to accompany Apostle Johnson Suleman to the headquarters of the Department of States Services, DSS. A media aide to CAN President, Bayo Oladeji, made the disclosure while reacting to rumours that the body was sending an entourage to accompany Suleman to DSS office today. Oladeji said though the body is solidly behind the fiery preacher, there is no plan to send an entourage with Suleman. According to Oladeji, “I spoke with him (Mr. Suleman) this morning. CAN is solidly behind him. He was invited to the office of the SSS; let him go. We are behind him, but as for whether or not we are going to the SSS office with him, my answer to that is no. He was invited alone. But we are solidly behind him.” Reports over the weekend had it that the secret police had invited the fiery preacher over his recent inciting comments. The Edo-born preacher had allegedly asked his members to kill any Fulani herdsman found around him and his church. Following the statement, the secret police attempted to arrest him in Ado Ekiti, but the Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose prevented them. http://dailypost.ng/2017/01/30/wont-accompany-apostle-suleman-dss-office-can/
