Lol..... I never trust words.
But I know people can be genuine.
People can be hippocrates.
People can be struggling.
People can be anything they want to be.
Sexual purity is a choice and although it's a right choice, not everyone has the ability to go that path.
It is an intense discipline that needs the help of the holy ghost because you're making sure that all your faculties are pure.
Thanks for the post all the same (though I think In the long run, it may not really cause any change) but still, thanks.

Les Luka

So Ijeoma Chinonyerem made an interesting post about the supernatural, detailing a story of a woman who, it appears, “unintentionally killed her boyfriend” with charms and whatnot. The full story is on her page so go there for the gist.

I've been wanting to make a post on this and this seems like an opportune time to do so.

Whenever people find out about my irreligious leanings, the first question they ask is;

“so you don't believe in jazz?”

(which is funny, given the god they serve is supposedly more powerful but they never hesitate to use a ‘lesser power’ to validate the existence of their god, but I digress).

“No, I don't. Any wahala?”

Oftentimes, they'll regal you with stories that have no explanation and could only be as a result of the unseen. Not that their stories are made up but I'll explain why I don't believe in the supernatural.

1. The imperfections of cognition — selection bias.

For all the adulation and praise the human mind garners, it is not impervious to failures of accurately describing the human experience. One of this failures is the Selection Bias.

The selection bias is a quirk of human behaviour that predisposes us to accepting information that aligns with our preconceived notions and dismissing information that invalidates our opinions. Everyone has a selection bias to a certain degree. No human is immune to this. You will accept information that confirms what you already know and you will discard those that do not align with your beliefs.

For instance, an antifeminist will readily accept and ape the rhetoric of ‘indecent dressing leads to rape’ while ignoring the fact that conservative nations (with ‘decent dressing’) have far more incidence of rape than liberal countries (with ‘promiscuous dressing’).

Or what about the Buharist who refuses to factor in the overwhelming socioeconomic failures of the Buhari administration but agrees with the miniscule, two-bit crumbs of ‘progress’.

In the same vein, superstition is the mainstay of this selection bias, and religion as a whole.

If I made a prediction few days back that Manchester United with lose 6-1 and Liverpool would lose 7-2 concurrently what would happen to my reputation? Let's back up a bit; say I also predicted an 8-2 loss against Barcelona before the match what would you think of me?

I'd be heralded as a seer. People will slide into my DM to run their betslips by me, I'd be asked what charm I'm using, or the intellectuals amongst us would ask what statistical models I'm using.

But here's the catch, I make THOUSANDS of predictions. 99% of which turn out to be wrong, off-tangent most often. But the need to believe I have the powers of premonition predisposes people to SELECT the instances in which my prediction was spot on and dismiss the overwhelming chunk of it that was wrong.

It doesn't matter how unlikely my correct score predictions were, the fact that it is not consistent already eliminates it's viability.

We have been fooled by randomness. We see two or more unlikely events happen (usually within the same time frame) and automatically assume there's a pattern, neverminding the fact that these events wouldn't even register if they were far apart. Because of our need to understand our world, we force-fit randomness, select the information we want and toss the ones we don't like.

2. Imperfection in our cognition — mass delusions.

People say;

“well, I saw it with my eyes, Chinedu saw it too, so did Kemi”

Emmm.. that you all witnessed a “supernatural phenomenon” does not make it true.

There is a phenomenon in psychology called mass hallucinations — as the name implies, it simply means when a group of people witness an anomaly at the same time, usually within the same vicinity.

The history books are replete with stories of a mass of people witnessing a UFO, Virgin Mary, Jesus or an apparition. For instance, there was a time in Brazil, thousands of people ‘witnessed’ an apparition of Virgin Mary in the clouds (it turned out to be clouds of lightening).

As psychologists explain, mass hallucinations often start with one person seeing an unfamiliar object or activity. He or she then points this out to another person, who looks for this pattern (consciously or unconsciously), sees it, and points it out to the next person and boom! An entire mass of people are supposedly seeing something supernatural.

In terms of local magicians and ‘prophets’, they first prime the unsuspecting audience with cues; accentuation of key words, subliminal gestures and the rest. Then they often employ a hallucinogen — could be a plant, a powder, whatever — to induce psychedelic, out-of-body experiences, altered states of consciousness and then proceed to manipulate the person through suggestions.

The victims of this snake-oil plot never suspect they've been played because they don't know they've been played.

For good measure, consider the fact that psychiatrists can implant fake memories simply by putting the person in a highly suggestible state (using the aforementioned techniques) and telling them stories which they will remember as vividly as their own memories.

This is something that has gone on for centuries but now the scientists have a way an empirical way of understanding these blindspots in the human psyche.

When a person is doing feats of magic, stop and ask yourself this question;

“Can they do this again but in a different setting?”

Like 99% of magic, it is not reproducible in a controlled environment. They said magicians and native doctors cannot reproduce it with scientists controlling for variables and extraneous occurrences.

Summary of my extra-long post.

99% of our ‘supernatural experience’ have an explanation, and it is NOT a supernatural being pulling the strings. For the 1% that don't have an explanation, then they SIMPLY DON'T HAVE AN EXPLANATION, so terming it supernatural is fallacious.

Shine your eyes fellows.

Here's something to think about,

We are mortal because our chromozones decay, what if within the relatively near future, we develop the flexibility to renew our chromozones ??

Imagine how theists would react to it, who needs heaven once you are immortal on earth ?

Obviously, you’d need an off switch, for once you run out of things to try to to.

Gives you one more reason to resent, we could potentially be the last mortal generations of the humanity.

Imagine technology could return your youth to you, I doubt it might reverse the consequences of aging, but it could definitely halt it. Maybe quantum autonomous nano swarms riding our blood cells, acting as a brilliant system, regulating our body, giving us increased regenerative abilities.

Imaginatively, I do hope or envision a future time where money is recognized for what it's (an imaginary construct that facilitates trading and cooperation) - AND humanity will outgrow its needing the bible/Koran/fav holy book to inform you the way to be moral. However I don’t see that taking place until mankind as an entire starts to actually take responsibility and admits that it’s alright to not have answers.

The idea of AI causally being tossed as an alternate for humankind deciding and fair resource balancing scares the shit out of me. Why? Because
A) without emotions, it might be a psychopath
B) programmed emotions (for empathy?) are only nearly as good as mankind’s emotional maturity

Okay, i'll be getting sooner than myself with all this pseudo science and what ifs
I like the part where you said, Humanity should be begin to be responsible and that it is alright to not have answers. But we are curious and we must seek for answers and whether the answers are right or wrong, it is of no concern to us at all.
We choose that which conforms most likely to our mindsets and prejudice.

Majority of humanity are programmed.
If you're a fanatic, it is because you grew up in an environment that supported the possibility of fanatism.

If you are an atheist, it is because you gathered some outward Information and data that appealed to you that God doesn't exist and it clicked within you.

You're human, you don't need to choose or reject God. It is only a low level logic mind that thinks that only one option is correct. Logic will say it is either God exists or he doesn't exist but life will give 7 answers or possibilities.
1. Yes God exists and describable
2. No God doesn't exist and describable
3. God is both (exists and doesn't exist depending on the context)
4. God is not both (neither exists nor doesn't exist)
5. Silence
6. Yes God exists but indescribable
7. No God exists but indescribable

Of Religions, sentience and egos.
BY NWOBODO FORTUNE

When religious people say that Science proves Religion right and people that don't believe are "fools", what exactly do they mean?

Because from where I stand, it seems like quite the opposite.
A central flaw of religion is a desire to put man (and the earth) at the center of everything because we're the only beings that have the sentience to do so.
The earth must have been created for us. We must have some great, big purpose in this world.
The earth must have been the center of the world with everything revolving around it (this religion based belief was popular until the early 1600s).

This "special person, special purpose" belief is why the majority of religions have young earth creation dates. Man is the reference point and religions cannot conceive of a world in which animals existed for hundreds of millions of years before we did. Or a world in which until recently, we were no more special than these animals, just evolving humans at the middle of the food chain.
Thus, most religions aren't even made from the moment when man split from the ancestral apes or the moment when he first became sentient enough to make wooden tools. They're from the moment when he became sentient enough to think in abstract terms, in fact, in such abstract terms that he could imagine things that didn't exist and convince himself that they did because it was the only way this world could have been created. That period was just about half to one dozen millenia ago compared to the 200 millenia that our species, homo sapiens has existed or the approximately 6.5 million years since we split from the ancestral apes.
And most of their thoughts are bull... The exact bull by which most religions are proven false.

All of science does not agree with a young earth. The only thing that agrees with a young earth is our ego and our wanton desire to place ourselves at the center of narratives simply because we have the consciousness and the overbearing ego to do so.
From the petrol in our cars that represent the remains of dinosaurs that existed 66-230 million years old and the remains of myriad other species of extinct animals to the rocks that we can accurately date with Potassium Argon dating systems to 3 or even 4+ billion years ago to the earliest light from stars that we calculate to have left the star 13.4 billion years ago, showing us that the star is at least that old, we've consistently found that so much existed before us, so much exists with us and so much will exist after we have gone extinct. We're just lucky enough to have the consciousness of self / intelligence to enjoy the now.

I have always maintained that the more specific a religion is, the easier it is to be dismantled. Because while they can twist and turn, changing the goal posts on a number of these vague ideals they churn out, the truth remains that most of their beliefs are created by men who thought themselves special enough to be the mouth pieces of the gods whilst making quips that were only true in their time, mainly as a result of widespread ignorance in ancient times.
If you hold their more specific quotes, thoughts and attempts at science up to scrutiny, they crumble into fine dust.

No religion is special. They're all made up attempts to answer the questions, How did all of this come to be? Why are we here? etc.
That is why there are so many of them. (There were over 100,000 known religions before the conquest and colonialism of much of the world by superior armies spreading Christianity and Islam (for political means) reduced that number to the conservative 4,000 it is today.)

Unlike Mathematics or Physics which would be replicated almost perfectly if all of it were lost, religion is such a diffuse product of the imagination that if all the 4000 religions suddenly left our imaginations now, in time people would invent entirely new ones that would have only one thing in common with the old ones. A reliance on faith and absolutely no rooting in fact.

Have a nice day.
Religion and science can never complement each other based on the fact that science is an objective act and religion is a subjective act.
Even in the same religion, the same followers or worshippers have different thoughts, mindset and pictures of God because God is a subjective phenomenon not an objective one.

If God exists, that is fine by me. If he doesn't exist, that is also fine by me but one thing I am aware of is that I exist and I live and that's enough for me.

Religion is simply an attempt by man to explain the mystery of existence.
They try to explain that God created the world, of what concern is you that God created the world? Whether he created the world or not, does it matter? The mystery of existence or creation cannot be explained by logic or by words simply because this whole charade and game of life existed before you're born. It existed before your reasoning, your intellect and your emotions were born or formed so it would be impossible to explain the whole mystery of existence with that punit and tiny logic or theology of yours because life will continue to exist even after you're gone.

The focus shouldn't be for or against God
The focus should be on yourself.
Know thyself!
Christianity EtcRe: My Thoughts And Questions About Religion by dontrulee: 11:28pm On Nov 02, 2020
Religion is a phenomenon man created to shift responsibility from himself to some "unknown deity".

God cannot be proved nor disproved. So arguing for or against God doesn't make sense at all.

For me, I think it is better to just enjoy and live life here and now, be conscious of this moment. Live in the present and not in the past nor the future. Every religion claims to be the true religion and they say all other religions are false, I am not proving or disputing such facts at all. What I observed is that even if there is an element or iota of truth in any religion, the priests have woven doctrines around it and this has killed the truth.

It's better to go within yourself and look inside of yourself and discover your true being. Why become like Christ when existence has made you something else. Existence has produced one Christ and that's enough. Existence doesn't repeat itself and if you try to become Christ by all means, you'll only be a dead Christ and not a living Christ because you'll loose your authencity.

If you believe in God, fine.
If you don't believe in God, fine.

But, have you believed in yourself?
You've not seen God, but you can see yourself right? Why not start from going deep within yourself?

All the efforts of religion is to take the focus from yourself to God, whereas you're supposed to start from Yourself.
EducationRe: How Can A Medical Student Read And Remember? by dontrulee: 12:05pm On Oct 02, 2020
Let me give a summary since you don't like reading lengthy texts.
1. Learning isn't just by reading alone.
Right now, I don't like reading as much as before. The problem with reading is that you read and forget. Try discussions. They help a lot. Many times we remember what we discuss that what we read.
2. Check out YouTube videos.
Najeeb, osmosis and the likes will help you understand some concepts
3. Your problem is that you want to understand everything. That mindset wouldn't help you.
When you read a text, do not try to assimilate it word for word, rather see if you can reconstruct the sentence you've read to your own taste. That's why I like diversity, I notice the authors choice of words, then I reconstruct it to suit my taste and understanding and so anytime I remember my words, I remember the authors words and vice versa.
4. Relate what you read with what you can experience. I remembered I hated Biochemistry so much because of the many pathways and all that but I passed biochemistry wonderfully well because I associated with my mates who had first class in Biochemistry and came back for Medicine. I was the god in anatomy but I was deficient in Biochemistry and to overcome my weakness in Biochemistry, I will ask to be taught by the guru's and the funny thing was that I was scoring higher than them in progressive assessment. Infact it got to a point I was scoring higher in Biochemistry than Anatomy and that made me be the best in preclinicals.
Association is very powerful in Med school.
4. I can't say much about lecturers and attending lectures but it's good to attend lectures. Me for one don't like listening to a Prof who will just be ranting and changing slides. Attending lectures has its advantages, A.O.C and co, what lecturers emphazied upon and all that but I was able to boycott all that with the association I developed with my mates. So I may not attend some lectures but I will always have even more idea that those that did. But be careful with this approach, it doesn't work for everyone.
5. Practicals are very powerful oooo.
I love practicals, for my year two and year three I aced all my practicals. Anatomy, physiology and biochemistry practicals was a walk in the park for me. My mates nicked me god of practicals.
I attended practicals, read my practical manuals related with the staff there. Majority of time, I was reading in the laboratories and that gave me a very big advantage because I was able to associate with Master's and PhD's students and that improved my understanding tremendously.
EducationRe: How Can A Medical Student Read And Remember? by dontrulee: 11:47am On Oct 02, 2020
Good morning.
By the grace of God, I am a 500level Medical student and I have tasted the depth and heights of Medical school. I have passed wonderfully well and failed wonderfully well too.
'MB' is a double edged sword. It can be to your advantage or disadvantage. First thing I want you to know is that you should start thinking of MB as a tool for your advantage. I remember in 400level, I failed all my in courses. I failed everything and my pre MB was very bad. I had almost given up infact I had settled for resit or repeat but when the time for MB came, I prepared for it. I changed my attitude to study. I didn't consider the fact that because I failed my in courses or my progressive assessment that I would fail my MB. You know that attitude of if I perish I perish but I must give it my all. But by the grace of God, I passed my MB so well that I was promoted to 500level without resit. I couldn't believe it, it was like a miracle but I sat down to analyze how I did it and I realized the following points.
1. You need God in everything including your academics. Acknowledge him and he will guide your path.
2. Believe in yourself. Say good things to yourself, think good thoughts to yourself. Your mindset is very powerful oooo.
3. Be yourself. Don't compare yourself to another. My method may not work for you, you'll need to find that method that suits you best. In 200 level, I was the best student in my class because I tried a lot of methods. From Night classes, to cramming, to watching videos, to talking with seniors, to writing what I read, to teaching my classmates. I was so vibrant filled with energy and I passed well but failure descended on me when I got distracted, when I got seperated and wanted to be alone. I fell like a bunch of card. I thank God it wasn't late before I realized.
4. If it can work for others it can work for you too. Find out what works for others and try to incorporate it into your own experience.
5. Use your mates as an advantage. I remember vividly in 200 level and 300 level, males and females will come and meet me to teach them. They like listening to me because I can explain the basis so well many preferred listening to me than reading textbooks because I have almost all the medical books and I like reading a lot. I can quote several authors within the blink of an eye. And so, people understood that I was an advantage and they used me but I didn't feel use because I was benefitted myself. The truth is we are all not equal, that's why we have different IQ'S so use your scholars to your advantage.
6. Seniors advise are very Paramount oooo.
Utilize your seniors. Learn from their success stories and their failure stories. The first two people I met in Medical school were repeaters. They showed me were they failed and I understood what to do to avoid failing. I never knew that it was possible for someone to fail his pre MB and still pass his MB until I met someone with that experience

NPComplete:
The first problem is assuming God has always existed. There's no proof for God always existing other than some verses in the bible. And we all know the bible has never been an impeccable source of information.
So that assumption is an argument from dogma.

Secondly if we are to believe that God has always existed, why is it hard to believe the universe has always existed in whatever form before it became the form we know of it now. Maybe this form we know of it is just our mental projection. And since our brains can't see beyond 3 spatial dimensions, it is plausible that our understanding of space time is skewed and limited. The universe may also be eternal for all we know. Perhaps the universe is God.

Personally, I don't see anything wrong with God Himself having a creator. I can live with it. And I imagine it is possible we also become creators ourselves after we leave this life. It might just be that that's the essence of life. Life birthing more life. Creators creating and getting created. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that.
So if I get you right, you're saying that the universe is the original or the first creator?

Then who created the universe? or is the universe also self existing?

and many other 'successful' people also.

I can understand his decision because I am also a 500level medical student. To reach where I am, I know all what I had to pass through despite that, I have always thought of being an Engineer and if I have my way, I will go back to study engineering. I am basically in Medicine to make my parents happy all other things are secondary.

So if he claims to be called by God, leave him be.
But if I am to advise him as a fellow medical student, he should wait till he graduates before going into the call of God. We have many 'qualified' doctors who are not practising and yet are making big impact in the society. I for myself do not wish to practice more than 5 years. I want to venture into business. Abeg, I no like stress.

By the way, I am the scholar of my class. Medicine to me is so simple like ABC, I need a more competitive or tough course like Engineering, perhaps that will cure my laziness.

Majority of medical students are actually very lazy, myself inclusive.

The astral body is likely detaching from the physical body into the astral plane..
On the other hand, you are returning with force to your physical body.
That reminds me, I read a lot about astral travel and lucid dreams. I actually experienced them before I read about them. Very wonderful experience

Nothing special about sleep paralysis though.
I have experienced this many times.
Sometimes, deep in my sleep, I see myself falling into a very deep ditch. The feeling is usually very strong that it wakes me up but I wouldn't be able to move an inch from my bed. It is usually accompanied with an increased heart beat but I have learnt to regulate my heartbeat to close normal even in extremely frightening situations.
Many times, I feel myself raising my hands up for someone to grab hold of and pull me out of the paralysis.
All I can say is that it is a very nice and refreshing feeling.

@op, how are you doing?
God bless you. Amen.
please read my post attentively sir.
one thing you should understand about dreams is that two different people can have the same dreams but with different interpretation depending on whether the person is a believer or not.
when I was still a young Christian, I use to eat in my dreams and it disturbs me a lot so I went to my spiritual Father and complained to him.
he asked me some questions.
1. Are you a child of God almighty?
I replied, yes I am.
he said, what does Father gives their children?
I replied. Food
he said, God is giving you food in the dreams as a sign for your spiritual growth. We all need food to grow, isn't it?
I said yes.
he replied me, eating in the dream is because God is interested in your spiritual growth.
he asked me a question. he said, before I gave my life to Christ, do I eat in the dream?
I replied, yes sir.
he told me, that's because you were outside of God's kingdom, to those outside of God's kingdom, Satan is their Father and of course, he will give them food.
but now ,you're in the kingdom of God and God is your father, of course he will give you food.
it is a sign that God is interested in your spiritual growth sir.
Another question he asked me.
As a Christian, do you think the devil will be nice to you?
I replied, no sir.
he asked again, will the devil be nice enough to give you food?
I replied, no sir.
you get the point now.
you're now in God's kingdom. God is your father and he will feed you with spiritual food to ensure that you grow.
so, accept it and give him praise for giving you food in your dreams and read more of his words.
never pray against it because if you pray against it, you are praying against your spiritual growth sir.
God bless you so much sir. Amen
