lucabrasi:Hmm. . , well i did read some chapters of Leviathan, because I had to. No I haven't read Antonio Gramsci, I am afraid. I am more into political-economists. If you do get the Keynes book, I especially recommend the essays 'Economic Possibilities for our Grandchildren', 'Means to Prosperity', 'A short view on Russia', 'Mr Clissold' and the 'Economic Consequences of the Peace'. . . . I saw your opinions on capitalism on the Cuba thread, and I cannot think of a better riposte than Keynes for you. |
Needless to say, answers will be largely subjective depending on what you look for in a writer. Me, I don't like my writers being so obvious, laying everything out on the table. A writer that will make me think for days long after I read the last page does it for me. Now the obvious choice is between Soyinka and Achebe, all due respect to Adichie. Achebe is outstanding, the authoritative voice of the African soul. With such ease and simplicity he will charm even the most obstinate and cynical amongst us. Soyinka is difficult and sometimes seemingly deliberately inaccessible. Verbose in parts, sneakily crafty in others, he is almost an elitist writer where Achebe is 'populist'(in the positive sense of the word). But I prefer Soyinka. His craftiness appeals to me more than the wise old voice of Achebe. Plus he has range and he is a lot more subtle, a literary tease in every sense. And most of all everytime I read his books again, it seems I am reading a totally different book from the last time, cause new vignettes of literary brilliance seem to pop out from nowhere. So for me- - - - -the title goes to Soyinka. |
lucabrasi:I would like to meet someone who would actually take time to read Leviathan. Of all the classics, the only readable ones in my opinion are Macchiavelli and Adam Smith But for more contemporary thinkers, abeg i implore you to read Keynes's Essays in Persuasion. It is the most revealing, incisive and prescient writing. Especially his politcal essays. He more than anyone else has influenced the direction of Economic policy in the World today. You can also try his adversary Hayek's Road to Serfdom, for the classic case against Socialism. |
@4play There are honest mistakes and they are deadly mistakes. . . . . . And I am not even referring to the flimsy evidence. The prosecution of the war has been America's greatest undoing. In the military, they say 'assumption is the mother of all 4ck ups' and the invasion strategy was one long litany of assumptions, fueled by conceit. It is in that respect they failed those of us who thought some good might come from this whole excercise. |
I would have to say Evra. . . .Coming from Monaco, I hadn't been too impressed with his football but the boy has grown leaps this season. He provides an attacking threat and he is more than adequate defensively. Abidal on the other hand is limited offensively. He cannot take on a player like Evra has shown and he is pretty much limited to the predictable 1-2 football |
'jayfk Some things are just indefensible. . . . . .like the way the Cubans have been ruled for the last half a century. |
Cassiel:i am beginning to hav suspicions about who you really are ![]() |
Cassiel:Sounds like the rituals of a christian sect to me ![]() |
I don't think this is the 'Look at the Person's Profile above you and make a comment page' ![]() Abi una miss road |
Oh by the way. . . .Aren't there other religions besides Eslam and Christianity. What are the chances or a successful relationship between a Ifa follower and a Bhuddist. |
4Him:Isn't the fact that each relationship faces unique challenges the very reason why generalisations about the chances of such marriages be avoided. |
I went against my natural pacifist instincts and suported the war, cause I wanted a dictator removed and for a brief period you could sense dictators around the world at alert, trying to legitimise their regimes. But my wishes were betratyed by a poorly executed effort. Shortsightedness and largely conceit put paid to all that. Rumsfeld revealed all that is pompous and derisory about America. No plans about the borders, no adequate post-invasion plans, not enough military numbers etc. Frankly I do not think it is our place to pontificate on the culpability of Bush. It should be left to the families of thed thoundsands of lives lost, Americans and non Americans. |
Well I commented at the time of the Kidd trade that everyone keeps forgetting his shooting was woeful and his number of assists would not make up for that deficiency. This team was not bad at the time of the trade, but suffered from inconsistency and trading for Kidd has proved a non-solution. Some of them need to step up big time. . . . .especially John Terry. Josh Howard suffered from low confidence a few weeks back but he seems to have recovered his confidence. Bottomline though- - - - - -No Dirk- - - - - -No Ring @Other Matters The Hornets. . .Isn't it about time we took them seriously. . . .And Chris Paul is surely the MVP. He has the least amount of talent to work with amongst the other candidates. He is the most valuable player to his team. The Lakers. . . . . .The loss last nite to the Bobcats was a setback but this team showed in the thrilling game in Oakland they will be difficult to beat in a 7 game series. The Sixers. , . . . Nobody wants to play this team in the first round ooo. . . . |
I want to get the opinion of Barca fans on my opinion on the Barca defence. I do agree with the fans who think the defence is the problem of the team. . .But I argue not in the traditional sense of conceding goals but in aiding the attack. When Barca was winning the Champions League and two league titles, the right and left backs, Belletti, Van Bronckhorst and Silvinho were creative attacking full backs. Their replacements Zambrotta and Abidal less so. And this has been to the detriment of the attacking game which was the bedrock of the success of the team in those glory years. What do you guys think? |
Spencer1:They are intellectuals no doubt but I thought Ezekwesili's prescence was unneccesary. Okonji-Iweala's testimony was revealing though,as it partly proves Obj and the duo of Esther Nenadi and Lyel Imoke, for whatever reason decided to pass on due process at various junctures and with sums running into billions at stake. |
JeSoul:Me I need a hug ooo. . . .a snug Bostonian one ![]() |
Better. ![]() add Ogun too.
Thunder fire your mouth |
I know no one cares to listen to me. . .but I still think playing Adebayor up front on his own with three central midfielders is the way to go for Arsenal. For the simple reason that it gives Fabregas the freedom to go forward, and there is nothing more dangerous than players arriving in the box from deep. Fabregas and Flamini can't hold a midfield on their own. I thought Arsenal bringing Eduardo into the side was a mistake. . , Their football lost that edge it had at the beginning of the season when you Gunners were touting Fabregas for player of the season. ![]() Anyway that is my own two cents. |
Cassiel:Well I am always open to persuasion. . . . . . .Honestly Marx is old news now. Nietzsche a bit of a drama queen. . . . . Currently Wole Soyinka is the flavour of the month |
@Debosky Through whatever prism you want to view Obama's association with Wright, he doesn't come out looking good at all. His membership and avid attendance of the Church is a tacit acceptance of his Pastor's views regardless of whether he repudiates them some years later. It is the nature of racial politics that a slight taint or ripple that suggests any kind of association with a racial remark, gesture or action is rightly frowned upon. The BNP, a right wing party in Britain probably has many upstanding members of the community who send money to impoverished villages in Africa, or even have black friends. But their membership of this fringe organisation dominates how the public views them. |
@4him I hear those Egbas aint bad at all on those IQ tests either ![]() |
I bet Adenike Grange sounded intelligent too before her posting and probably impacted positively on some statistic Didn't count for nought when it came to managing an Organisation. Anyways. . . .Debo, Osotimeyin is prolly your Uncle ![]() |
What about Ekiti people? Every household seemingly has a professor |
Philosophy ooo. . . .My Professor in University just happened to be an expert. Walahi. . .the man had an answer for every question |
Well I don't think we would gain anything by comparing which gaffe or controversy is polically weightier. But 4play does have a point. . . .The Pastor scandal goes to the foundations upon which Obama's campaign was built The Clinton gaffe. . . .well it simply reinforces the view that the Clintons are quite dishonest folks. If they were Nigerians they would have gone the ritual killing route to gain power. |
Frankly, sod the quota distribution of posts abeg. Dora has proven that she can make a moribund organisation in the health sector relevant. Let her have it. . . . |
Cassiel:@Cassiel Na long story oo. . . .A whole load of Nieztsche and Marx. ![]() Well about those guilt tripping Christians. . .well i reckon it is at the heart of each religion especially the Big Two to conquer new grounds whichever way they can. This might be out of context. . .but don't 'the violent take it by force' |
@Cassiel I am on the fringes of atheism myself, but I just leave each to their own. On the other hand, you do get the ubiquitous and zealous Christian faithful who seem to be on every corner or on every channel, trying to guilt trip the 'unfaithful'. |
Morenike. . . .you should have noticed by now. i am a reformed character. No pick up lines and no looking for trouble. Kapish |
My master Sura, sewed a cloth jus like that for customer last week. . . . |

As a Christian,go marry an Ifa worshipper.Shey na love abi? By the time you see pots of blood under your bed,an idol that looks exactly like you in your wardrobe, and some black feathers in your work briefcase, maybe some suspicious-looking pieces of meat in your egusi soup, i hope you will remember words like 'sacrifice' and 'tolerance' and 'love transcends all things'.
I think all sungod simply needs is a hug
