Going by your analogy: If some people come to claim the land where my parents and I have been living on (e.g. Lagos) as their land, what needs to be done is to confirm from historical facts if it is true or not.
If the records and witnesses prove and confirm beyond any doubt that the land actually belonged to them, the proper thing to do is to negotiate with them, and see how we could reach a compromise and live peacefully and harmoniously with them on the same land!
