Don't derail from the thread. If a pharmacist is faulty, he will be castigated. Do you remember the case in Lagos in 2012 when a lady who died was said to have been drugged by a pharmacist? I can't remember the name. No one mentioned a doctor. That pharmacist is still facing trial till today. People are castigating the doctor because this particular story involves a doctor. Why should you blame a brick-layer when your mechanic makes a terrible mistake while trying to fix your car?
And the last time I checked, health care delivery involves team'seffort.

I've lived with pharmacy students and one graduated with a first class so I know a lot about the structure of your courses. see in medicine every course is like a degree programme. what I mean is we finish the whole physiology , anatomy etc textbooks from front page to back page within a stipulated time, normally 18 months. and that's the same workload people in department of physiology biochemistry cover over 4 years and we're expected to know it better than them, but in pharmacy your course is barely a 100 page material and different lectures take each course and set tests on their part further reducing the number of pages to be read per test. we read text books for exams and you read materials for exams. there's a whole difference, if you doubt any of these do your research.
see lie from the pith of hell. pharmacy is not a classified degree.

U are very very ignorant of the contents of human medicine. Dental students are absolutely ignorant of paediatrics, psychiatry, community medicine, family medicine, and only have introductory knowledge of internal medicine & surgery. Pls dont allow a dentist handle ur medical & surgical conditions. Its tantamount to suicide.
A medical(medicine) student is totally ignorant of all dental courses ranging from oral biology to restorative dentistry et al including cleft lip and palate surgery, orthognatic surgery, facial trauma, facial orthopaedic surgery et al..If a medical doctor handles all this, you're gone!..NB:Dentists are not ignorant of all you mentioned.

To say medicine and surgery is the most difficult course is an understatement.

For starters, in 18months you will have to do biochemistry, anatomy and physiology with an additional course. The whole of it, when you think it's the same courses each one of it some takes 4-5 years to study

In 4 months you will have to finish the whole pharmacology text
What it takes pharmacy and pharmacology students 5 years

Another 4 months to finish the whole pathology text
Pathology is divided into morbid anatomy, chemical pathology, hematology and microbiology
Microbiology is divided into bacteriology, fungalogy, parasitology and virology
All these are specialties, people take years to students
The clinicals is mad, medicine, surgery, o&g, peadiatrics.....

It's only in medicine 24hrs ain't enuf
Medicine makes extraordinary students ordinary
Turns humans into beast
I had to revise 175detailed slides in 20mins and know everything in there
It frustrates you
The stress, calls, wardrounds, practicals, annoying lecturers, exam tension, thrills

You have to have high tolerance, discipline and endurance level to survive

The exams are not here, time always insufficient

Negative marking, am not sure other departments does that

Lectures 8am to 5pm, evening you dey clinic
You don't have your saturdays to you everytime

I don't know about your medical school, but mine is really crazy in here
So don't even try comparing medicine with any other course

Mind you the best of the best are in medicine, many headboys in ma set, state champions, national champions, yet some still get withdrawn, majority keep on struggling.
Medicine is depressing, sometimes not mentally owkay, schizophrenic...

I don't expect you to understand, only one that passes thru the process will

If you so mad try to get admission to study medicine first, and not transfer aggression of not being able to secure an admission thus ridiculing how difficult medical school is
A king is only a king in his village!you can't know what you don't know.

enlighten me more please. Has it taken any tangible step towards getting accreditation?
Even if It had secured it's first clinical accreditation which I'm not sure ,you cannot rule out the fact that It won't face any challenge in the future ! It's more adviceable to pick a well established medical school. Even though, challenges may come up in one way or the other,It's reputation will speak for itself.I'm sure you wouldn't want to spend 12 years studying medicine. there are better institutions around.Goodluck!

You see, most people don't realize how medicine and surgery is until they experience it themselves....

My colleague mowah has told u just the academics that go with it, he didn't tell you anything about the responsibilities that flow with it....

Do you want to talk about the lectures (from 8am-6pm everyday, no break, sometimes some profs can hold lectures at 10pm, and you won't say crap) the practicals (during preclinical) and the ward rounds/clinics (during clinical)....

What of the crazy exams, answering 800 objective questions in 3hrs, then coming back that same day to answer all 17essay questions..... Even before that, you write exams nearly every month.....

During ward rounds, you are abused, castigated, told that you can never make it in life, you can never be a doctor, in front of your patient....

Medicine, to me, is the toughest course ever, then we could mention others later
This is your personal opinion!thanks.

More lucrative than dentistry.....
Reason: If teeth pain me, my grandmamma go give me agbo.. But if eye pain me I will not even allow a GP look at the eye cheesy
And If it requires surgery, an optometrist will do it?Dentistry is wider than what you think.

CareerRe: How Lucrative Is OPTOMETRY by Drdonzeez(m): 2:07pm On Feb 08, 2016
awolam:
A few points to note here

1. Optometry is recognized as a noble profession especially in the western hemisphere which can take up to 8 yrs to complete. (3-4 yrs Bachelors + 4yrs Optometry School). Pre-graduation for Optometrists theses are often considered Doctorate level. Most often than not, they bypass Masters degree and earn a PhD degree.
2. Dentists typically earn more salary than Optometrists in a hospital/clinical setting...but not by much really. Outside the west, Optometrists are not considered doctors...a myth... but they really are. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optometry

3. In Nigeria, and the Middle-East, Dentists earn more salary than Optometrists because they are considered doctors and Optometrists (not considered as docs.) Dentistry belong to the same association with Medical Doctors and will thus benefit from the political and lobbying power of the latter. For the record, the NMA approach the Optometry board to join, but were turned down for fear of suppression. Dental association agreed to join thus enjoying the largess that normally accrue to Medical doctors.
4. In a private clinic setting, Optometrists earn far more than Dentists due to the sheer volume and lucrativeness of eyecare. It is for this reason you often see optical retail chain behemoths in United States, Canada, Australia, U.K and the middle-east. The one my brother works in (Middle-East has about 100 branches and rakes in minimum N10b annually). Dentists will rely on occasional big-hitters which is often beyond the scope of most private dental practices (most surgical cases are treated in tertiary hospitals.
5. As far as course content is concerned, the Optometry curriculum closely mirrors that of their Medical Doctor counterparts. I won't dwell much on this here. A simple google search would suffice.
6. The failure rate within and outside Nigeria is huge. In Nigeria, you fail ONE clinical course, you repeat a YEAR! Fail two courses, you repeat TWO years...you get my drift.

My brother currently earns about $4,931/month in the middle-east in a private setting. Tax free.

A dentist (non-consultant) will earns between $5,480 - $7,670/month in the middle-east in private setups. Tax free.

Closing thoughts:

Optometrists earn a bit lower than Dentists overall albeit enjoying a "cleaner" work environment devoid of mouth odor, blood spills, and sundry discharges.

Both Optometry and Dentistry are noble professions in their own right and the success of individuals in each profession depends on how you go about your career (Salary earner vs Private clinic entrepreneur).

Hope this settles the unnecessary fight.

Thank you.
pls can you give us your source when and where the Dental association approached NMA and how optometrists turned down their offer?you could tell us optometrists refused to join the Ghana Medical association,Kenya medical association et al.and, they all accepted Dental surgeons.
