Actually there are wild elephants in Nigeria ... There are in some parts of Ondo state the state owned forest reserve ,Edo state Okomu national park , Crossriver state ,Taraba state both in their respective National parks , Bauchi state @ the state owned wildlife sanctuary ...

you can't tell for sure from the angle the op took his picture. you said fangs look like switchblades, and you are right...and if that is true, then like a switchblade, the fangs will be curved backwards and resting on the roof of the snake's mouth...only projecting outward when it wants to inject venom...

Err wrong again though I said like switch blades but if you've handled a venomous snake before the moment you hold the head like that and force the mouth open the fangs are active i.e the come out of their grooves its more like an involuntary action and its sorta directly proportional relationship ie the wider the mouth the more of the fangs you would see this is so that the snake doesn't accidentally harm its self that's why it's so easy to spot them I know am a wild lifer and iv killed and handled snakes ...

well over 60 percent of the species of snakes in Nigeria are non to mildly venomous...but it is a fallacy to judge a snake's threat by it's eyes..cobras have round pupils...mambas do too..but vipers majorly have narrow slit pupils...and venomous snakes do have short fangs...cobras have short fangs, hence they kind of 'chew' in their bites to deliver the desired amount of venom in their prey..the curved teeth on the snake the op showed are not for injecting venoms..they are for holding on to prey to avoid escape...fishes also have backward curved dentition...that snake however, doesn't look like the common red banded cobra prevalent in Nigeria....

In as much as I agree with all you have written i will tell you that holding a snakes head like the op has done you would know of a snake is venomous or not cos the venoms fangs are not like the other dentition they stand out in length and are separated from the others most have the look of a switch blade so this snake is definitely a non venomous snake...

don't be its just nature ,the non venomous snakes are cool too they survive by constricting their prey i.e squeezing them till they either die or faint them swallowing em whole ,lots of peeps think only pythons anacondas and Boas feed this way but there are lots of other smaller species that employ this technique case in question the op's dead snake from the curved teeth you can see this is a non venomous snake so its a small constrictor the teeth are meant to hold down prey to allow the snake work its magic...

actually Edo state is among the oil producing states just not in commercial quantities like Bayelsa and Akwaibom reason being that the terrain is rocky so you spend more drilling even my tribe village we don't have wells cos when you dig it gets mixed with crude be enlightened ...

Am a wildlifer and I was simply mortified with what I saw for a CRITICALLY endangered mammal like the manatee to be butchered like that made me sad cos all through my school days I only saw this mammal in videos and pictures ,I thought they were extinct ...
