By DAYO ADESULU Seven Nigerian universities have successfully emerged among the 15 African universities selected for the World Bank-sponsored project by African Centres of Excellence (ACE). The selection has indicated that some Nigerian universities are competitive in their tripartite functions of teaching, research and community service. The benefiting universities were selected after their proposals were evaluated and considered to have met the requirements for the ACE project, at the end of the Project Steering Committee (PSC) meeting, held in Dakar, Senegal, on 28 October, 2013. The new ACEs in Nigeria and their project titles are: Redeemers University, Mowe, Ogun State /University of Ibadan, Ibadan (African Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases, ACEGID); African University of Science and Technology, Abuja (Pan-African Materials Institute [PAMI]); Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (Centre for Agricultural Development and Sustainable Environment); Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (Centre of Excellence on Neglected Tropical Diseases and Forensic Biotechnology); University of Jos, (Phytomedicine Research and Development, ACEPRD); University of Benin (Centre for Excellence in Reproductive Health and Innovation) and the University of Port Harcourt (ACE Centre for Oil Field Chemicals). According to the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission NUC, NUC, Professor Julius Okojie, the project is aimed at developing regional higher education that would promote regional specialisation among universities and address particular common regional development challenges. He said that it is also aimed at strengthening the capacities of benefiting universities to deliver high quality training and applied research. “This is to meet the demand for skills required for Africa’s development, such as the extractive industries and agricultural productivity. The project would also contribute to the strengthening of the best African universities within science-based education. “The seven countries across West and Central Africa participating in the first phase of the project are Nigeria, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Cameroun, Burkina Faso and Senegal. It would be recalled that following the call for proposals by the World Bank on 15 July, 2013, Nigerian universities submitted 55 proposals to the NUC in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) as well as Agriculture and Health Sciences.” Okojie explained that in an effort to ensure that grant winning proposals were submitted from Nigerian universities, NUC constituted the National Project Performance and Review Committee (NPPRC), an evaluation Committee, headed by Professor Adebisi Balogun, to review and enhance the quality of the proposals. The proposals further went through desk evaluations by a team of 22 African and international evaluators. Of the 52 proposals that were submitted by all participating countries to the RFU/AAU, only 31 were shortlisted, with 16 of them from Nigerian universities. http://community.vanguardngr.com/profiles/blogs/7-nigerian-varsities-emerge-for-wb-sponsored-projects |
President Goodluck Jonathan is scheduled to meet the seven aggrieved Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors, G7, on Sunday, PREMIUM TIMES has learnt. The meeting, probably the last between both sides, is aimed at bringing an end to the crisis rocking Nigeria’s ruling party. According to a letter written to the governors, dated November 11 and signed by the President’s Chief of Staff, Mike Oghiodomhe, the meeting would hold by 9 p.m. at the First Lady’s conference room, the State House, Presidential Villa. The letter, seen by PREMIUM TIMES, was addressed to the Governor of Niger State, but was ostensibly replying a mail earlier sent to the president by the Governors, dated October 6, 2013. A source close to the Abubakar Baraje faction of the PDP confirmed that all the aggrieved governors received the letter, adding that the meeting would indeed hold and the governors would attend. He however said the feeling within the group is that nothing much would be achieved from the meeting in the light of the recent decision to suspend Mr. Baraje and three other top officials from the PDP. “The Governors may go, but honestly, I am not sure anything good would come out of the meeting because the action of the president and other officials does not give any hope for reconciliation,” the source, who sought anonymity as he was not permitted to speak, said. The meeting between the two sides was expected to take place on October 7, but the Baraje faction wrote to the President on October 6 asking for a postponement of the meeting because some of its officials were out of the country. The spokesperson of the Baraje faction, Chukwuemeka Eze, had issued a statement stating that the faction had sent an emissary to the president asking for the postponement. He added that the team expected to meet with the President would include five other governors who had indicated interest to join the faction Efforts to reach Mr. Eze on more details of Sunday’s meeting were not successful as he could not be reached on his mobile number. Presidential spokesperson, Reuben Abati, did not pick calls and was yet to respond to our sms enquiry on the meeting as at press time. Another presidential aide, Doyin Okupe, could also not be reached as he did not pick calls sent to his phone. PremiumTimes |

The President noted that following the expiration of the tenure of the Chairman, DG and the Commissioners of the commission, he decided to nominate those listed for confirmation in line with the provisions of Sections 16(3) and 17(1) of the Pension Reform Act, 2004. For the Chairman of IRS, Jonathan noted that it is pursuant to the provision of Section 11a of the Federal Inland Revenue (Establishment) Act, 2007, which stipulates that “the Executive Chairman shall be appointed by the President, subject to confirmation by the Senate. The Director of Health of the local government, Hajiya Amina Jibril, disclosed this on Monday in Illela while briefing a team of Journalists monitoring the exercise. “These cases were recorded between Saturday and Sunday in 347 households across the area. “ Over sixty per cent of these rejections have been resolved and all the children hitherto missed, had been fully immunised,” she said. According to her, about 60% of the targeted children have been immunised so far, since the exercise began on Saturday. “We are also hopeful that the exercise would record about 95 per cent success by Tuesday, “We have also planned a mop up exercise between Saturday to Tuesday next week to cover all the children who will expectedly be missed,” she added. Jibril disclosed that the state government had provided 115,520 doses of the polio vaccines to the local government, adding that 492 health personnel were administering the vaccine in 11 wards of the area. “We have some of them immunising children on house to house basis, while there are fixed and special teams,” she explained. The director said the local government was providing incentives to encourage parents to allow their children to be immunised. “These include plastic plates and cups, noodles, detergents and toiletries, among others; we are also doling out other items to the children, like sweets and biscuits,” she added. Also commenting, the Chairman of the local government, Alhaji Garba Sabongari said the council had earmarked N900,000 for logistics, to ensure the success of the exercise. - See more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/11/polio-453-people-reject-vaccination-sokoto-lg/#sthash.f3sZqXWA.dpuf |
World champions Golden Eaglets are in line for plots of land in Nigeria’s capital city of Abuja, officials said. “We have filled forms for plots of land in Abuja,” coach Manu Garba said “All the players and officials filled these forms.” Some observers had blasted the federal government for not rewarding the history-making team with a more enduring gift like land or houses as was the case when the same team won in 2007. (FIFA/FIFA) The Super Eagles received plots of land in Abuja when they won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in February. A top official said the government ought to have done a lot more for the team, many of whom are already bread winners of their families. “The rewards could have been better and so it was very disappointing for both the players and officials,” he revealed. “But it is hoped the government could still address this issue properly.” The Cross River State Government has since rewarded the team with houses in Calabar and NigerState have offered plots of land to the players and officials in Minna. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/11/eaglets-get-abuja-land/

Nasarawa – A blind man, Shaibu Ibrahim, on Monday told a Grade 1 Area Court, Aso Pada, Mararaba, Nasarawa State, that he and his wife, Lami, could not resolve their differences. Ibrahim, 56, of Aso Pada, Mararaba, told the court that all his effort to settle with Lami, 38, proved abortive. “I took one of my friends to her place but she refused to listen to us. She did not regard us as human beings, instead she walked out on us,’’ he said. The blind man urged the court to continue with the case. The Judge, Malam Danladi Musa, adjourned the case to Dec. 2 for continuation of hearing and ordered Lami to come with her witnesses. On Nov. 14, Lami had urged the court to dissolve her marriage to Ibrahim for his alleged excessive sexual urge. Lami told the court that she was no longer interested in the 15-month-old marriage. “I urge the court to dissolve this marriage because I can’t stand his excessive sexual urge. He likes sex too much, I can’t bear it. “Most times, he would have sex with me from midnight till early hours of the morning, even when I am crying, he will not stop,’’ Lami alleged. She alleged that Ibrahim was uncontrollable anytime he wanted sex and that whenever she refused his sexual advances, he would beat her up even in front of their children. Governor Abiola Ajimobi of the western Nigerian state of Oyo today reflected on happenings after the dissolution of the State Executive Council, saying that he was under serious pressure from all sections of the public to field their nominees, before the appointment of the new Commissioners and Special Advisers. The governor, while speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of the newly-appointed Special Advisers at the Executive Council Chamber of the Governor’s Office, Ibadan, said that the pressure was borne out of the willingness of several indigenes to serve his administration. Governor Abiola Ajimobi congratulating his SA on media, Dr. Festus Adedayo on his re-appointment Governor Abiola Ajimobi congratulating his SA on media, Dr. Festus Adedayo on his re-appointment Consequently, he charged the new appointees to be mindful of the fact that they were selected out of the many other people who were equally qualified, able and willing, and then put in their best to justify their appointment. “The appointment of a Special Adviser, who is of cabinet rank, is a position of trust and responsibility. You are expected to know more than the commissioners and even me, in order to be able to advise me. Therefore, you must see your appointment as a rare opportunity and discharge your duties to the best of your ability,” the governor said. He attributed the re-appointment of some of the Special Advisers to their contributions to the success of his administration during their first appointment, adding “you made pass-marks, for you to be able to get re-appointed into the cabinet but you must always reflect on your activities in order to notice your areas of imperfection.” Governor Ajimobi told the new appointees not to be afraid of criticisms, saying “whatever you do, people will criticize you; it is normal. Today, people criticize Ajimobi; yesterday, they criticized Alao-Akala; day before, they criticized Ladoja. Many past leaders had equally been criticized. So it is a normal phenomenon”. Source |
