Sincere 9gerian: 1. GEJ is the first president to sit with ASUU in a negotiation
Was he forced to do so ? Where was Minister for Education Wike ? GEJ was in meeting because he appointed a man that does not give a damn to Nigeria Education but a man that was only interested in Rivers politics. GEJ sack a professional in field ( Prof Rukayat) and leaves a politician to do the job , so what do you expect.
You even talk of Suswam, pls spare me that name, Suswam that is yet to solve ordinary primary school strike in Benue will now be talking of ASUU Strike.
Bros did you know that UCH Doctors has just suspend their strike for 1month, after 1month now and they embark on indefinite strike and FG will accused them of something else and also accused the oppostion of hijacking the strike.

Family › Are You Really The Father Of Those Children ? by dridowu(op): 10:14pm On Dec 04, 2013
My man, can you answer this simple question: Are you sure, really sure, you’re the father of those children in your house? I mean, are you their biological father? Do they carry your genes? Was it your sperm that impregnated your wife resulting in the birth of those children? Pardon my meddling in what clearly is your family affair. However, you do have a right to know that you’re not raising other people’s children under the illusion that they are yours. Recent revelations about disputed paternity of children brought to mind the agelong belief that it is the mother of a child who knows the real father.

Dr. Murray Conrad, remember him? He was the personal physician of the music idol, Michael Jackson. In a recent interview he granted a US news medium, the doctor said Jackson was not the father of his three children as he claimed he never slept with their mother, Debbie Rowe. (See: http://www.tmz.com/2013/11/24/dr-conrad-murray-michael-jackson-penis-interview-daily-mail/). The dust raised by that revelation had hardly settled when a newsbreak in Ghana revealed that Ghanaian football superstar; Nii Odartey Lamptey, is embroiled in a divorce suit with his wife, Gloria. Ghana newspaper, Daily Graphic of November 30, 2013 reported in its online edition that Gloria Lamptey has “filed for divorce at the Accra High Court on the back of marital problems arising out of alleged infidelity on her part, after the football star discovered through paternity tests that he was not the biological father of their three daughters”.

According to the 38-year-old Lamptey, “The issue is in court… it is a legal issue I don’t want to go into it now….but I am 100 per cent sure that the children are not mine after 20 years,” he was reported to have told Accra-based NEAT FM. However, Mrs. Lamptey allegedly claimed the husband was infertile and it was upon his consent that she proceeded to undertake InVitro Fertilisation, a claim the footballer is contesting.

Lamptey, a midfield maestro was a member of the Black Starlets team which won the 1991 FIFA Under-17 World Cup and went on to win a historic Olympic bronze medal with the Black Meteors at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, and a silver medal at the 1993 FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Australia. A former Aston Villa and Coventry City player, he was 1991 world’s best juvenile player. The Lampteys’ case is said to have come on the heels of a recent divorce case being heard at another Accra High Court involving a former Black Stars captain, John Mensah, whose wife of 10 years, Henrietta, is seeking a break-up of their marriage on the grounds of infidelity, among other accusations.

Before we think there are no similar paternity issues in Nigeria, let me bring to our attention a celebrated case involving the late business mogul and colourful politician, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola. The Nation in its August 7, 2007 edition reported that a DNA test conducted on the order of the administrator of Abiola’s estate and in compliance with the instruction in Abiola’s Will dated October 29, 1989 showed that some of his 113 children might not be his children as 25 of them were alleged to have failed the DNA test.

The question is why are cases of paternity dispute on the increase around the world? The simple answer may be due to increasing infidelity in marriages. However, that will not explain the entire phenomenon. The act of infidelity is itself driven by a number of factors. Among them are pressures from the extended family, fear of divorce as a result of woman’s inability to bear children or giving birth to only girls, lack of sexual satisfaction, and many others.

I have been married for over a decade and should know some of these things. Family pressures, if not properly handled may lead spouses astray. Though companionship should be the primary reason for marriage, however, in our traditional African society, children are placed over and above companionship. Mothers and mothers in-law especially want their daughters or daughters in-law to give birth nine months from the wedding date; that is if she’s not yet pregnant before marriage. Some mothers do tell their sons to be sure their fiancées are pregnant before fixing date of marriage because of fear of infertility. Those who believe that the marital bed should not be defiled before marriage start putting their daughters or daughters in-law under intense stress once a year passed by without signs of pregnancy in the wife. In some cases, the husbands too join in mounting the pressure on their wives to bear them children.

Similarly, there is another category of married women who do not have male children. They do have children but they are all girls. In some traditional societies, particularly among the Igbo and Yoruba, male children are preferred to female. For some reasons, such as a male child being the one to carry on or preserve the names of the family; a male child being stronger and hard-working and so on, some husbands and their extended families therefore mount undue pressure on their wives to give them male children.

Medically, it has been proved that men carry X and Y chromosomes while women carry X chromosome. A male child is produced only when a male sperm produces Y chromosome to fertilise the X chromosome of the woman. Invariably, it is the man who determines the sex of the child. Unfortunately, many men who blame their wives do not know this or rather choose to ignore the medical truth. In search of children, particularly male children, some women do silly things such as having extra-marital relationships including having sexual affairs with their husband’s friends, office colleagues, drivers, gatekeepers, etc. Some of them even resort to buying children from fake and mercantile maternity clinics and orphanages that dot our landscape. They do this in the vain hope of making their husbands and families happy and saving their marriage from collapse.

The Nigerian law may not recognise bastards but the Yoruba despise them. They are called “omo ale”, that is a child from concubine. There is an adage that “agbo ile to ba ntoro, omo ale ibe ni o ti d’agba” that is if a clan is peaceful, it’s because the bastard in the family is yet to be of age. Perhaps, if husbands and the extended family of spouses will stop putting their wives, daughters and daughters in- law under pressure, maybe, we will have fewer cases of disputed paternities. I do hope that women themselves will stop this nonsense all in the name of preserving their marriage. If they or their husbands are infertile, they should insist on written agreement or having a witness if they are to go for artificial insemination, in vitro fertilisation, child adoption or any lawful means of resolving their infertility.

Politics › Forbes Names Akinwumi Adesina African Of The Year by dridowu(op): 11:14am On Dec 04, 2013
The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development,
Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, has been named Forbes
African of the Year for his reforms in the country’s
farming sector.
A report by Reuters quoted Forbes Africa’s Editor,
Mr. Chris Bishop, as saying, “He is a man on a
mission to help Africa feed itself.”
Adesina was chosen ahead of some of Africa’s
most prominent businesspeople: Aliko Dangote and
Jim Ovia, also from Nigeria; South Africa’s Patrice
Motsepe; and Zimbabwe’s Strive Masiyiwa.
The report notes that although the country is one of
the world’s biggest oil exporters, most Nigerians
live in poverty, especially in the rural areas.
Bishop said he hoped the award would “encourage
the rest of the continent to grow more of its own
food.”
Analysts say Nigeria’s economy has long been
dominated by oil, while agriculture has been
ignored, even though it supports far more people.
Adesina said he wanted to help the people to
become rich through farming. “My goal is to make
as many millionaires, maybe even billionaires, from
agriculture as possible,” he said, in his acceptance
speech.
Aliyu Tanko from the BBC Hausa says Mr. Adesina
has introduced more transparency into the supply
and distribution of fertiliser, which had previously
been marred by massive corruption.
Most Nigerians still live in poverty, especially in the
rural areas.
The minister has also urged Nigerians to grow more
food crops, especially cassava.
In January, Adesina announced a scheme to hand
out 10 million mobile phones to farmers to “drive an
agriculture revolution” so that they can find out the
latest market information.
The phones are also used to get vouchers for seeds
and fertiliser.
However, Reuters says this goal has not yet been
achieved, noting that there is no mobile network
coverage in many rural areas.
The main opposition party criticised the scheme as
a “mischievous vote-catching exercise.”

Health › UCH Doctors Suspend Strike For A Month by dridowu(op): 10:02pm On Dec 03, 2013
After two months on strike, the Association of Resident Doctors, ARD, University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan, on Tuesday announced that its members would be going back to work for the next one month to allow further negotiation on issues leading to the industrial action.
The union began the strike on October 1 in protest against anomalies in the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System, IPPIS, recently introduced by the Federal Government.
According to the ARD President, Babatunde Babasanya, the strike was suspended out of respect for some eminent Nigerians who offered to mediate the impasse between the Association and the Federal Government.
The mediators, he said, included the UCH authorities and well meaning Nigerians, who have been appealing to the association to suspend the strike and give room for intervention.
Mr. Babasanya said the decision to suspend the strike was reached after a six-hour congress, where members agreed to give a month to see if the Federal Government would pay all the outstanding money.
“It is so sad that the IPPS scheme has caused most of our members to lose part of their August and September salaries. Some were paid as cooks, security men, cleaners and the likes, while others did not even collect any salary for these months. We were even shocked that when our November salary was paid, the shortfalls were not corrected,” he said.
The doctors wanted the August and September salaries regularised, as well as assurance that anomalies would not reflect in the December salaries if they prevent resumption of the strike.
“We are not asking the government for excessive money. This is our salary which we have worked for. We cannot cope further with this financial hardship that has befallen us.
“The government has blatantly refused to yield to our request but we are suspending it for peace to reign. The Federal Government has been shortchanging UCH authorities – N100 million every month since January – and this has been hampering the progress of this institution,” he said.
The ARD leader appealed to the Federal Government to address all issues raised.

Politics › ASUU Strike: Government Extends Ultimatum For University Lecturers To Resume by dridowu(op): 9:47pm On Dec 03, 2013
The Federal Government on Monday extended its deadline for striking university lecturers to resume work. The deadline was moved from December 4 to December 9.
The government, through the acting Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, had ordered the striking members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to resume work onDecember 4.
The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Julius Okojie, announced the new date while addressing journalists in Abuja on Tuesday.
Mr. Okojie explained that “Government decided to shift the deadline after it received notification of Prof. Festus Iyayi’s funeral rites slated for between December 5 and 7.
Mr. Iyayi, a former President of ASUU, died on November 12, 2013 in auto crash in Lokoja on his way to attend the association’s meeting in Kano. The accident was reportedly caused by the convoy of the Kogi State Governor, Idris Wada.
According to Mr. Okojie, the decision is also to avoid a situation where government and ASUU will have to deal with the ultimatum during the funeral of the former ASUU President.
“We just received information that the burial rites of Festus Iyayi begins on the December5 and would last till Dec. 7.
“Based on this information, government decided to shift the resumption deadline to December 9, to enable lecturers to participate in the burial,” the professor said.
The executive secretary said the directive had been communicated to the various university Governing Councils and Vice Chancellors for onward transmission to the academic staff.
Mr. Okojie added that there was no intention to victimise any lecturer for participating in the strike.
He said the victimisation clause which members of ASUU were using to discredit the government never came up when the unionists met with President Goodluck Jonathan on November 4.
“On the November 4, Jonathan had a meeting with ASUU. In attendance were senior government officials, the Ministers of Labour, Finance, Education, NLC, TUC, SGF, Chief of Staff to the President and a host of others.
“I recall the remarks Mr. President made that day that something has to happen, that all parties had to find solution to the nagging problems of our universities.
“ASUU came out from that meeting which lasted for over 13 hours, to say they would communicate with us through their principal officers.
“Let me also emphasise that the drafting of that communiqué had the input of ASUU,” he said.
The NUC boss said he wondered why ASUU would return three weeks later, after it had failed to get back to government on November 8 as agreed, demanding addition of new clauses.
“The 2009 agreement stipulates that any party that wants a re-negotiation should inform the Ministry of Labour.
“If ASUU had said they would resume, but the outstanding issues must be addressed, government would have no choice,” he said.
On the N200 billion Revitalisation Fund, which ASUU wanted government to disburse within two weeks; Mr. Okojie said the money had been deposited in an account in the Central Bank of Nigeria.
He explained that the money could not be disbursed based on ASUU’s demand because it was meant for capital projects.
According to Mr. Okojie, the order does not require students to commence lectures immediately.
“The school environment had to be made habitable for both students and the entire staff of the universities.’’
He said any lecturer who resumed work after the expiration of the new deadline would not have his or her salary arrears paid.
“You cannot pay someone who has failed to resume work. You are on strike and you want to be paid?
“What if some has already left the system? Some of our very bright lecturers may have got jobs elsewhere.’’
Mr. Okojie said government, as employer of labour, could not fold its arms while the institutions remained shut at the detriment of students.
The ASUU President, Nasir Fagge, had earlier explained that the union did not add any new demands in its letter to the president. Mr. Fagge, who said the strike would continue, condemned government’s ultimatum; same was condemned by other lecturers and civil society groups.
The ASUU boss explained that the government’s letter after the meeting with President Jonathan was not a total reflection of what transpired during the meeting.
“In the ordinary meaning of the word “resolution” the government’s letter was not a resolution. The document was a report of Government’s understanding of the decisions or agreement reached on the matters discussed with ASUU,” he said.
