KANO (AFP) – Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau said in a video released Sunday that he led an October 24 attack in which 35 people found in military uniform were killed in the Nigerian city of Damaturu. “Look at what happened in Damaturu (capital of northeastern Yobe state),” the head of the Islamist group said in the video obtained by AFP through the same intermediary as previous clips. “Since we killed them with our hands — in fact I was the commander of the operation — so, you cannot say I’m making conjecture,” he said. The authenticity of the video clip — in which Shekau spoke for about 11 minutes in Arabic, Hausa and Kanuri — could not be independently confirmed. “This is a brief message to the world. We carried out the Damaturu attacks with Allah’s help, with Allah’s might, with Allah’s glory and with victory from Allah, the Creator,” he said. The video was titled “Battle of Damaturu” in Arabic. Thirty-five bodies in military uniform were brought to a morgue in Nigeria’s restive northeast after a coordinated assault by Boko Haram targeting the security forces, a hospital source had said. The attack in Damaturu was the first significant raid in a major urban centre in several weeks by the insurgent group waging a four-year Islamist uprising. Police and residents said large numbers of Boko Haram fighters, some in vehicles and some on foot, stormed Damaturu after dark. Armed with guns and explosives, they attacked and torched four police buildings, sparking a fierce, hours-long gun battle with the security forces. Contacted by AFP on October 28, Yobe state military spokesman Lazarus Eli did not deny reports that dozens of soldiers were killed during the clash. Vanguard |
Abuja – No fewer than 500 students of public and private schools across the country on Sunday observed the partial solar eclipse at the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Abuja. A solar eclipse is an astronomical event that occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the earth and partially blocked the sun. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the solar eclipse started in Abuja at exactly 1. 03 p.m. as predicted by NASRDA. NASRDA provided the students and some Nigerians with instruments, including Eclipse shades to observe the eclipse. The Supervising Minister for Science and Technology, Mrs Omobola Johnson, said the students were invited to motivate them to develop interest in the study science and technology. “We invited these students to boost their interest in studying of science and technology which is the bedrock for industrialisation of any nation. “That is why we are using this medium to encourage you to develop interest in studying science and technology, particularly astronomy and space science,” Johnson said. Johnson, represented by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mrs Rabi Jimeta, said the occurrence of the partial solar eclipse revealed that space technology was working in Nigeria. Partial Solar Eclipse She promised that government would continue in its efforts at ensuring the development of space science in Nigeria. The Director-General of NASRDA, Prof. Seidu Mohammed, described solar eclipse as a natural phenomenon with no direct impact on climate change. He described as false insinuations that occurrence of eclipse was an indication that the world was coming to an end. “All that is happening is a natural phenomenon and there is no religious sentiment attached to it. “This should help us to discourage the mysteries attached to solar eclipse by various religious bodies. “From the scientific perspective, it’s just a natural phenomenon. “The signal from geo-stationary satellites does not have effect on any of the communication gadgets like the GSM, aircraft and businesses,” Mohammed said. Some of the students, who spoke with NAN, commended government for the opportunity to observe it at the centre, adding that it would boost their interest in studying science-related courses. Mr Yat Japheth, a student of Baptist High School, Kubwa, FCT, said today was his first time of observing solar eclipse with such instruments provided by NASRDA. Miss Peculiar Daniel, Scintillate Int’l Model School, Lokoja, said the opportunity would help her to know more about the sun, the moon and the earth. Also, Mr Luru Adewumi, a teacher at the Oak Height Schools, Lugbe, Abuja, described it as an opportunity that some of the teachers never had when they were in schools. Adewumi said the opportunity would not allow anybody to deceive the students about strange attachments to solar eclipse by people. Children in Abuja, today. He said the experience would help the students to understand the practical aspects of science. However, Mrs Akinwumi Arize, who brought her five-year-old son to observe the eclipse, said such gesture would help children to know how the galaxy and the universe operate. NASRDA had predicted that a partial solar eclipse would occur in Lagos at 12:30 p m.; Kano, 1.07 p. m., and Enugu, 1.04 p.m. It also added that the entire African continent would be affected by the partial eclipse, while some other parts of the world would witness total eclipse. The agency predicted that another partial eclipse would occur in April 2014, March 2015 and September 2016. (NAN) Vanguard |
THE Christ Apostolic Church Good Women Association of Ijesha Land District Coordinating Council has praised the performance of the Osun State governor, Rauf Aregbesola, since he assumed office almost three years ago. The CAC women Association, who paid a courtesy call on the governor in Osogbo, said the beneficial programmes of government are now the talk of the town. The leader of the group, Lady Evangelist J. K. Orimogunje, said CAC women know and appreciate the ongoing school reform because it is directed at reshaping and securing the future of school children in the state. Orimogunje, who is also the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Chairperson in Ijeshaland, equally mentioned other laudable programmes of government in education, health, welfare and security, like the OYES scheme, monthly welfare scheme for vulnerable elders (Agba osun), school feeding scheme, free uniform initiative, eye surgery and free breast cancer test. “We what to tell this government that we have intimated ourselves with the restructuring ongoing in the education sector and we approve of it in its totality because we know the ultimate beneficiaries are our school children, who are our tomorrow. “Indeed, you are God-sent to the State of Osun and we the Good Women of CAC Ijesha District coordinating council know your worth and salute your courage in doing all that you are doing,” Orimogunje said. She said that the move of the governor has been misconstrued by many people, who are alleging an Islamisation agenda. According to her, the governor is impartial to all religions. She noted that Aregbesola’s impartiality, therefore, informed the decision by the CAC Women to select him as life patron of their organisation so as to demonstrate to the whole world how fairly he treats all religious organisations. In his response, the governor commended the boldness of the group in coming out to commend the achievement of government and supporting its programmes and policies, particularly the school restructuring. Aregbesola said things have gone so bad that the efforts of government look like an oasis in a vast desert. He, however, promised that government would not rest on its oars until life become better and comfortable for the people in the state. “I want to commend your group for this visit. I can say that yours is one of the first organisations that has studied government’s programmes elaborately and come out with a better understanding and appreciation of what we are doing. Origin |
Germany has become the first European country to allow parents of babies born with no clearly-defined gender characteristics to leave the ‘male/female’ field on birth certificates blank, creating a ‘third sex’ category in the public register. The law, passed in August, comes into force on November 1. It was prompted by results of a 2012 study by the German Ethics Council, which found the rights of intersex people weren’t protected well enough. The legislation is meant to prevent parents from making hasty decisions on controversial genital surgeries for their not-entirely-male-or-female newborns, done to make one of the two gender characteristics prevail. "This will be the first time that the law acknowledges that there are human beings who are neither male nor female, or are both -- people who do not fit into the traditional legal categories" University of Bremen law professor Konstanze Plett said as cited by AFP. As adults, German intersex individuals will soon be also spared from the necessity to fit in the conventional gender framework, as the current two options of entering either ‘M’ for male or ‘F’ for female in a passport gender field, will be officially supplemented by a third option: ‘X’. This kind of three-gender-choice system was introduced in Australia in 2011. New Zealand followed suit a year later. Intersex advocates, however, say that legalizing the status of intersex people is not exactly where the fight for their rights ends. “As an adult with an X passport I can tell you that actually using that passport is fraught with difficulty. I can’t fly to the US with that passport, indeed I can’t even book a meeting about that with their consulate,” says Morgan Carpenter, president of Intersex International – Australia, in an official late October statement at the group’s webpage. Still harder than coping with legal confusion is coping with centuries-old stereotypes, the activist believes. “Intersex people are regarded by medicine as having ‘Disorders of Sex Development’,” Carpenter says. "The term ensures that sterilizations and unnecessary genital surgeries continue today. This remains our most fundamental concern. Genital surgeries continue in Australia to make infants and children ‘appear’ male or female.” Germany is expected to face some of these issues as well, as the country’s marriage and partnership laws, for example, are based on the binary gender system. Besides there are so many everyday life situations, in which a neither-male-nor-female child might feel ill-at-ease. "Schools have toilets for boys and toilets for girls. Where will the intermediate child go? There are separate sports activities for boys and for girls, and so many other things like this. The law doesn't change that. It does not immediately create a space for intersex people to be themselves," AFP cites Silvan Agius, policy director at ILGA Europe, a lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex rights group. It’s estimated that on average one in 2,000 births is of an intersex baby. Advocates argue the actual figure is much larger as intersexuality might sometimes not be immediately defined. According to German government figures of 2007, cited by Reuters, at least 150 intersex babies are born in Germany each year and 8,000-10,000 people have ‘serious variations’ from physical gender-defining characteristics.
