He’s said to be subject of a transfer tug-of-war between Arsenal and Newcastle, and is regarded as one of the best players in Africa, but who exactly is Godfrey Oboabona?

What do we know about him?
Oboabona is a 23-year-old, 6’2 central defender who can also play in midfield (and has even been used as an emergency striker). He currently plays for Nigerian club Sunshine Stars in his home land, and has 18 caps for the national team.

Bit of a Jack of all trades, master of none then?
Not at all. Oboabona has proved himself in African football as a reliable player in whatever position, using his pace, power and strength to good effect.

Who exactly wants him?
Well, according to reports in Nigeria, Newcastle are leading the chase and hope to wrap up a deal at the end of the season.

But Arsenal had him on trial in March and are known to be huge admirers. They hold the advantage of being Oboabona’s boy hood club, but doubts over whether he would get a work permit mean the deal is complicated.

How much would he cost?
It’s thought that his club the Sunshine Stars would part with Oboabona for around £1million – a snip considering his quality and potential to improve.

With a little bit of negotiating, Premier League sides may even be able to bring that down further.

Godfrey didn't go for trials in Arsenal. He was invited for trials as early as February. The british journalist who wrote this in April assumed that he turned up for the trials.

He didn't go then - the NPFL was on. It was assumed that he would go at the Nigerian end-of-season. He has however turned the table on Wenger by slamming him rather than going for trials.

I respected your reply to my earlier post and only decided not to get into a personal e-debate with U. I didn't do so because your positions or deductions from my post, which U quoted, was right, but because your comments were very knowledgeable even though hugely deviant from my position.

Now let me reply you: Amir Zaki indeed was the Egyptian player. I think you really need to read Zaki's story in England. Zaki was LOANED by Wigan from Zamalek. He was highest goal scorer in England within his first 6 matches with 5 goals. He consistently stood on the goalscorers chart throughout the 2008/2009 season he was with Wigan.

Even while there, he didn't kowtow for his English managers. He was constantly being fined and all that but he didn't budge. He did his business, completed his season and EVEN REJECTED signing for Portsmouth, who wanted him badly because Algerians and Israelis were in the Portsmouth team and Management!

What more can you ask from a player who knows what he wants and stands by it? I was skeptical about Godfrey, not because I doubted his ability, having watched his meteoric rise to the Super Eagles from St James' Secondary School Team in Ondo town or because I had not watching him play well in the Super eagles defence during the qualifiers. However, I felt Keshi would prefer the foreign-based crop of Yobo, Omeruo and Efe Ambrose. Who could imagine that Efe would be discharged to Right/Wing Back back a 'previously-untested-at-a-major-tournament' Godfrey would be made to marshal the centre of the defence with captain Yobo? Yobo made so many mistakes in the opening game and Godfrey kept covering him up. Unfortunately for all of us, after doing well for 93 minutes, just as he did against Jordi Alba, a slight loss in concentration gifted the Burkinababes their equaliser in that opening match. In subsequent games however, he upped his ante and remained ever constant like the Northern star.

Even the Mba we all make noise about today was only lucky to have been played against Ethiopia because the favoured Fegor Ogude was ineligible (2 yellows) and Nosa Igiebor was injured. Otherwise, many wouldn't have seen Mba's abilities. That explained my skepticism before the tournament, not because I doubted his ability.

I have read with disgust all the shameless negative comments against Godfrey that has been posted here.

The truth is that our people are so hungry, barely insightful despite university education and have lost their overall sense of self-worth.

How many Egyptians and Tunisians go for trials in the so-called England? Godfrey played so well for Sunshine that he is not only their captain but led them to the CAF Confederations Cup and CAF Champions League reaching the Semi Final in both respectively for two consecutive seasons. If Wenger can't watch those tapes in addition to those which Supersports can gladly provide him of the Nigerian league (which most people here barely watch on DSTV anyway, all they do is complain & lament ignorantly!), he needs to see an opthamologist.

I was skeptical when Keshi took him to the Nations Cup but he shone brightly there and maintained so in the Confederations Cup. Remember that Godfrey is indeed a utility player - he began as an attacker in osfodec (Ondo state academy) and can really play all roles possibly except goalkeeping! For the Super Eagles, he has played as both Central Defender and Right Back (Nig vs Liberia).

Godfrey is also good with free kicks. He scored Nigeria's equaliser in a recent away match. Mikel prevented him from showing his free kick abilities in the Confed Cup. Doubt me if you want, I guess you would also have doubted if any Kenyan could play that stunner that sank into Enyeama's net when the Harambee Stars came visiting a few months ago. I've listened to and read a lot of people say nairalanders are frustrated, lazy or jobless people. I disagree. I have been thinking of opening a thread to ask if that is true. Because for me, it is False.

What is the NGF? Is it in the constitution of the country? Ebi, Okonjuwa, which means Greed&Avarice in yoruba, is the problem of the average Nigerian. The report went thus: “Members of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, PFN, and Umuoji community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State are on each other’s throat, following the killing of a snake in the community by the Overseer of the Mercy Throne Assembly, Umuoji, Rev Jude Chibueze (God is King).

To the community, Rev Chibueze had committed a sacrilege, adding that the killing of snake in the area is a taboo. The matter is already before the Anam-bra State Police command which is trying to mediate between the two parties to avoid a breakdown of law and order.”

Undeniably, I was taken aback that in this modern age, 6,000 years after man, enslaved by Satan and more than 2,000 years after the Creator of man, came in the flesh, to show him the approved highway to The New Jerusalem, the earthman would still be groping in the dark (John 1:10, Rev 21).

According to the report, “Already, the church where the overseer is the pastor had been sealed with palm fronds by the community people.” Narrating the incident, Rev Chibueze said he heard his children shouting in the night and raced to their room. His words: “When I got to their room, I saw a big snake lying with them and I had to kill it and threw it into the nearby bush, the following day, some community members marched to my house and accused me of killing their god. They beat me up mercilessly.”

Rev Chibueze is not the first pastor facing such a situation. March 17, last year, a group of villagers in Akaeze, a community in Ivo Local Government area of Ebonyi State, expelled the priest in-charge of the Anglican Pentecostal Church in the village, Rev. Daniel Okoli and his family for allegedly killing a hallowed snake. They also destroyed the church building and personal belongings of the priest and his warden. Police investigated both cases.

Wearying times

Incontrovertibly, these are trying times for Messengers of God, who must contend for their faith as well as with the people, who they have to lead to repentance and acceptance of their belief. Moreover, the gospel, which is the power of God unto salvation says, “Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer.

Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation 10 days” (Rev 2:10) and “Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked; but now commands all men everywhere to repent (Acts 17:30).

If this is temptation and tribulation at the same time, Rev Chibuze must be praying now that God should not allow the temptation that will be above him to come his way and the tribulation should not pass 10 days. However, the question is; Should wisdom not have taught a man of God how to handle testy cases that involve given Caesar what is Caesar’s? (Matthew 22:21).

Childhood incident

Frankly speaking, some communities in Igbo land and other parts of the world worship snakes and other animals as gods. I recollect my childhood experience in Nnewi, Anambra State, serpents used to creep into the apartment rented by my late father, but he told me the blood-curdling “visitor” meant no harm. Did I believe him? As a child then, Yes. Now that I am grown up, I do not think I will accept such teaching.

Commonsense vs. religious conviction

Nevertheless, from Rev Chibueze’s account, the snake slept with his children without harming them. So, should he or should he not have killed the snake? Before you say crucify him, note that a sense of fear and danger is what beclouds any man when he sees a snake and he must have remembered the scripture, which says, “Lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices.”

Human beings think and react differently, that is freewill that God gave us to make choices. The devil came the way of Rev Chibueze in the form of Umuoji snake-god. Somebody suggested that if he were a prayerful and strong man of God, a snake-god would not have entered his house to inveigle him because his domicile should have been walled by invisible spiritual fire. (Zech 2:5). They fail to remember that Satan tempted Jesus (God Himself) even after his 40-day and 40-night prayers (Matthew 4:1-11).

Another maintained: “As a pastor in the community, I believe he already knows that the people worship snake and snake comes into their houses. He must also have seen plenty snakes around the community. What he should have done is to pray for God to smite the snake, instead of him (pastor) killing it or report to the traditional ruler of the town.”

The third person, referencing 2 Tim 1:7: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” said the pastor acted erroneously. His case: “By virtue of his revelation in this verse, as a child of God, I can never be afraid of snakes because I know God will protect me from injury. So, what I will do is to command Holy Ghost fire to burn the snake in the name of Jesus.”

Really, the decision is personal, according to one’s faith and power working in him. However, Apostle Paul faced a rather similar situation after surviving a shipwreck on Malta Island. It is written, “Paul gathered a pile of brushwood and, as he put it on the fire, a viper (snake), driven out by the heat, fastened itself on his hand” (Acts 28:3). The natives were the ones who kindled a fire for him and others because of the rain and cold that night.

Now, nobody knows what shipwreck Rev Chibueze escaped from in those hours of darkness, only to find an unasked lodger, a snake-god for that matter, inside his dwelling, which was under lock and key as at when he went to bed. Did the creature take wing into his room?

Apostle Paul’s experience

Like the Umuoji natives, “When natives (people of Malta) saw the creature (snake) hanging from his (Paul’s) hand, they said to one another, ‘No doubt, this man is murderer, whom, though, he has escaped the sea, yet justice does not allow to live” (Acts 28:4). What ensued: “But he (Paul) shook off the creature into the fire and suffered no harm” (Acts 28:5). Unmistakably, this was not what the people thought would happen. “However, they were expecting that he would swell up or suddenly fall down dead. But after they had looked for a long time and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds and said that he was a god (Acts 28:6).

Umuoji people, who accused Rev Chibueze of murder of a snake, would have expected him to fall and die. When that did not happen, they refuse to borrow from the example of their Malta counterparts, who waited for a long time. After reviewing Chibue-ze’s case in a time-honored court, the chief priest and his co-judges, found him guilty as charged and prescribed items he should purchase to placate their god. In Rev Chibueze’s words; “They wrote a list of items amounting to N54,890, which they said I should buy to appease their god. Being a Christian, I told them that it is against my faith and more over, I killed a snake and not a human being.”

Stalemate!

A community leader, Chief Paul Edekobi, disagreed, saying, the pastor had agreed with them that he would appease their gods, but instead of doing what he earlier agreed to do with the community, he reneged. The pastor dragged them to Ogidi Police Station where six of the community leaders were seized. Deadlock–you might fittingly conclude at this point.

Elijah’s alternative

Elijah made a conspicuous disparity with the prophets of Baal in their white linen robes and high-pointed bonnets. King Ahab branded him, ‘Troubler of Israel” and he responded, “I have not made trouble with Israel, but you and your family have. Ahab accepted the challenge the battle between God and Baal which is exactly what Umuoji people did by assembling their chief priests, who are waiting for the items. In a clash like the one at hand, no mortal can fight for God, the true God fights for Himself. If the chief priests think otherwise, particularly as police is not equipped to handle spiritual matters, it will not be an unspeakable proposal to go to Mount Umuoji to make certain the God that will answer by fire

Meanwhile, all those who support the snake-friend-tradition should cover their heads in shame - that's if they profess any form of Christianity.

Only 10% of all snakes are poisonous. That's a scientific fact. Let no one say that a python of whatever form in any village isn't harmful. That reptile is a constrictor which can wrap itself around its victim & kill it!

We must learn to let the 'gods' fight for themselves, rather than we for them. This is appalling especially for those who defend this inconceivable position of not killing a reptile that might pose danger to you because of a clearly fetish age-old tradition.

AWKA —  MEMBERS of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, PFN, and Umuoji community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State are on each other’s throat, following the killing of a snake in the community by the Overseer of the Mercy Throne Assembly, Umuoji, Rev Jude Chubueze.

To the community, Chibueze had committed a sacrilege, adding that the killing of snake in the area is a taboo.

The matter is already before the Anambra State Police command which is trying to mediate between the two parties to avoid a breakdown of law and order.

Members of PFN under the aegis of Umuoji Gospel Ministries Fellowship led by Pastor Celestine Ekpunobi, yesterday, described the tradition that forbids the killing of snake as barbaric, adding that such law should only concern the pagans.

Already, the church where the overseer is the pastor had been sealed with palm fronts by the people of the community.

Narrating his version of the incident, Rev Chibueze said a snake stormed his house at night when members of his family were already sleeping. He said the snake was lying where his children were sleeping and when the children started shouting, he ran out with his wife to see what was happening.

He said: “When I got to their room, I saw a big snake lying with them and I had to kill it and threw it into the nearby bush. The following day, some community members marched to my house and accused me of killing their god. They beat me up mercilessly.

“They wrote a list of items amounting to N54,890 which they said I should buy to appease their god.  Being a Christian, I told them that it is against my faith and more over, I killed a snake and not a human being.”

However, Chief Paul Edekobi, one of the community leaders said instead of the pastor doing what he earlier agreed to do with the community by providing the items, he dragged them to Ogidi Police Station where six of the community leaders were arrested.

According to him, what he did was capable of wiping out his entire family if sacrifices were not made to appease the gods.

“We do not want to destroy his property and that is why we used the palm fronts to tie round the church to stop him from worshipping there for now,” Edekobi said.

But the pastor said: “What they are talking about is not tradition; they see the killing of a snake as a taboo in their world of idol worshipping and not same in Christian faith

“If they do not desist from this act, our next port of call will be the court for the enforcement of our fundamental human rights.”

Can you imagine this scenario? Yes it is real -life!

@Dxy, that indeed might describe me. But there is a huge problem getting the right woman. The averagely tall and fair girl whom I seek isn't often intelligent. When you find one who is, she is materialistic and myopic. When you find one who has the initial three and lacks the next two, she isn't a Christian, or isn't a practicing christian. When you get one who is averagely tall, fair, intelligent and a good christian devoid of any form of immorality, she isn't a Roman Catholic like I am.

And she often is unwilling to leave her church or become Catholic - as I wouldn't want to convert a lady because of marriage. If you love me & would marry me, then you must from now let your God be my God and my people your people!

So U see, different strokes for different people. This marriage thing is indeed benumbling. I feel almost tired. Single & ready, but where is the lady?

I'm watching a documentary of Nigeria's Super Eagles 1994 matches both at the World Cup and the Nations Cup. Somehow, I feel the top dogs (top hierarchy) in the Nigerian sports media industry who have seen what I now see haven't done posterity a good deal by not commenting on this thread before now.

There are no excuses, everyone who is a Nigerian and uses Google.com would have come across nairaland.com at one point in time or the other.

Those boys were horribly envious of Yekini although Yekini seemed to have had his own attitudinal problems too as he did not gel with his new teammates after the World Cup when he moved to Olympiacos of Greece from Victoria Setubal of Portugal (where he was Portugal's season top scorer with 34goals in 32matches). Note that Yekini was the reigning African player of the period.

Even Finidi did NOT rejoice with Yekini who he passed to for the goal. It looked like though they 'beefed' him (meaning 'conspired against' in Nigerian parlance), they had national pride to protect too.

So, when they were desperately looking to score, they fed him - especially as he was the pointman - and the only seemingly irreplaceable in the 94 team, at least to Westerhoff. There was competition for every other shirt. Only Richard Owubokiri gave him some competition for a while in that period.

Amokachi passed to Finidi who laid it across goal and Yekini tapped it in just before Amunike who was on Yekini's left but neither of the trio joined Rasheed in the net for the celebrations! I've seen many players score goals and their teammates congratulate them in the net where they choose to do their celebrations. But not so for Yekini who scored our first World Cup goal and the man who holds the National goalscoring record.

The rest is history. None of the members of that bunch ever succeeded in the national colours vis-a-vis winning a major trophy outside of Yekini. The best they got were silvers and 'golden-bronzes.' Good for them!

As to the goals he missed, I agree with you. Yekini should have buried the Emenalo pass. That was the only clear chance he fluffed. The rest were at best half chances. There was no way we could have beaten Italy. Westerhof's decision not to play another striker and change the now-defective 4-3-3; electing rather to leave it as 4-5-1 was what killed us off. It did not matter even when we had a man advantage!

I remember asking the 14 year old obese girl that way my patient back then why she didn't simply go to UITH rather than come to Ife, missing school and exposing herself to the death traps that our roads were in the process. I was shocked and pained to know that she was referred here from there because they do not offer such facilities there. To see a little girl travel alone, to and fro, for 2 straight days-since she was an outpatient&we really have a deluge of renal cases anyway- was particularly worrisome.

So indeed, I'm happy for the girl&for the people of Kwara. Special thumbs up to General Latinwo too but one has this feeling of 'why give the people the belief that you've attained Olympian&unprecedented heights when it is actually considered rather belated in the league of medical professionals?' It would have been better to indicate that you are happy to be able to offer services that sister institutions have helped with in the past... Same goes for Plastic Surgery. We have a very functional plastic surgery department here too and it has been so for a long time.

I expect that this puts to bed the unnecessary tension that is building up here.

At the book launch where he launched these tirades and unprovoked innuendoes against the Iroko of Africa,who was represented on the same High table, he was regularly checked by his colleague ACN governors but he chose to continue to dish out his sophistry. It was a show of shame. I watched it on TV. Most people don't know the extent of what he did that day that's why they think this petition is a step too far. Indeed, it is appropriate for this period. It is however unlikely that he has been reviewed by a psychiatrist in the period under review so there might not be much to gain...

We maintain their renal patients here in Ife. I particularly had one. She had to travel several times because their Teaching Hospital did not offer the facility. Same for Plastic surgery. Those things are normal things here in Ife.
