My Matrix consumes a lot of fuel. This is my first week on the job and I made 75k total but I spent almost 40k on fuel. And I don't run around much. The other day I bought fuel of 2k and it couldn't take me from Gbagada to Gerrard road in Island and back to Gbagada.
I've serviced the injector and it seems to have gotten worse. Opinions needed urgently.....
Car Buying / Gas Mileage
8 Main Causes of Bad Gas Mileage
November 8, 2016
13 Comments

Bad gas mileage is caused by a number of different things. The list goes on and on, but there are various things that attribute to this problem. Bad gas mileage means that your car is not running as efficiently as it could, and it also means you are losing money at the pumps because you are filling up more often. Here are some of the main causes of poor gas mileage.

See this month's best deals on fuel-efficient cars >>

Bad Gas Mileage Causes:

Incorrect tire pressure is a common cause of bad gas mileage. It's also one of the easiest things to correct. Periodically checking your tires with an inexpensive pressure gauge is a good way to catch this. Just be sure to use your car manufacturer's recommended pressure levels stamped onto the driver's side doorplate and not the "maximum pressure" numbers shown on the tire itself.

Having bad oxygen sensors and air filters can reduce your gas mileage by up to 20%. The oxygen sensors help keep the proper mixture of air and fuel, and having this off balance can be inefficient. The air filters can get clogged and simply need to be unclogged to fix the problem. Air filters need to be cleaned so that the engine can work at its peak performance.

Your spark plugs are responsible for sparking combustion in your engine. If they misfire, or are working poorly, this can affect your gas mileage in a negative way.

Having bad fuel injectors can cause bad mileage. This is because the fuel injectors are responsible for putting fuel into the engine. If there is a leak of some sort, then less fuel will make it to the engine, and then in turn make it run less efficiently.

Having your air conditioner on causes a lot of gas to be wasted in powering the system. Depending on your local climate, consider turning off the air conditioner when it makes sense and ride with your windows open. At higher speeds, close the windows though to reduce drag

A common cause of bad mileage is your own driving habits. If you are an aggressive driver, likely you accelerate to quickly. This causes more fuel to be used, and will use up more gas than you need. Same goes for revving your engine. It may sound cool, but it uses up gas for going nowhere.

Many people waste gas by idling. Idling is when you have your engine on, but you are parked and not moving. Common places where this occurs is when you are trying to warm up your car in the winter, or while you are waiting to pick someone up. Your car really doesn't need more than 30 seconds to warm up the engine. When it comes to waiting for someone, turn your car off or put it into neutral. Since you aren't moving, you might as well save gas and the environment.

The type of motor oil that you are using can also affect your gas mileage up to 12%. You want to use motor oils that are high in reducing friction. Either use a synthetic oil or the oil that the car's manual recommends.

Check the manual you attached... Use API SJ

In lube selection; API Classification plays the major role.
It gave you two types of oil you can use .. It stated 5w30 for types of weather and 10w30 ... but it highly reccomends 5w30. If I don't see 20w50 I will not reccomend it plain and simple... Keep in mind this is a 1999 Camry we talking about......

Even I do go back to my 07 Elantra manual... The Elantra was used for uber and previous manager I had was using Mobil xhp . The wrong oil to begin with..... It does not matter if the xhp was changed often or not .. It was the wrong oil to start with.. Now if I had a warranty on it , it would have been null and void.....I had to sell of all my cars and start over again.. Please my brother let us educate our customers and encourage them to read the owners manual... The manufacturer knows better than us , .. Car engine is a big business in ladipo.. And mechanics and engine sellers are smiling to the bank ..trust me I used to ship parts ..these guys are making millions of people's ignorance....

I know what Im telling you. Get a Toyota Camry 1999 model and check the Engine oil Cap. You will see 5W30. Buy a 5W30 and use on it, you will notice that the oil dries up. Most of the times, these cars arent meant for the market we are using them in. Check Toyota Products from SA, you will see that there is a table for selection and you will see 20W50 there.

Do you want an evidence? Check the picture attached for Selection chart. You MUST consider TEMPERATURE before selection but OilGrade ie API Classification MUST be maintained

This is my field!
During these oil debate.. One thing I didnt do is go directly to owners manual to read . All the information is free and readily avilable on line... as u can see 5w30 is good for all extreme weather ... most of the tokunbo cars are from the USA ,which are built better than SA.. Apart from that ,you can the 1999 Camry owners manual at the bottom.. I rest my case ...

Over 80% of engines in Nigeria are already high-milage, most engine oil filters in the market are inferiors, also we are in a temperate region and finally our driving conditions are mostly short stops-and-go. Using lighter oils in this conditions doesn't make economic sense in my opinion.

Copied... https://cartreatments.com/what-do-the-numbers-on-motor-oil-mean/

....."Most people have either changed the oil of their car themselves or they’ve taken their car to an auto servicing company and had professionals do it for them. An important aspect about oil changes involves choosing the right type of oil.

This doesn’t just mean choosing between synthetic or conventional mineral-based oil. You also need to pay attention to the numbers on the label of the motor oil. You might see something like “10W30” or “5W20” and wonder what the heck they mean.

Even if you have your oil changed by a professional, they normally put a sticker on your windshield which indicates the numbers of the oil they used in your vehicle. What do these numbers mean?

In a nutshell, the numbers before and after the W represent viscosity. The letter “W” itself stands for Winter. As you may know, viscosity means the thickness of a fluid. In the case of motor oil, it is the thickness of the oil under certain temperature conditions

The number to the left of the W refers to the oil viscosity when the temperatures are low. The number to the right of the W refers to the oil viscosity at hotter temperatures.

If the first number is low, it means that you have thin oil. Whenever there are colder temperatures in your environment, it is better to have thin oil in your engine. Otherwise, it will be harder for thicker oil to flow throughout your engine and lubricate its components.

The second number will be dependent on two things; the temperature of your engine and the heat of your environment. If you live in a tropical area with a lot of heat, you will want this second number to be high because it means the oil is thick. It is good to have thick oil in hot temperatures because it will do a better job of lubricating the engine’s components.

In North America, the standard motor oil to use is 10W30 or 5W30. If you live in a very cold nation like Finland, you might need even thinner oil like 0W30. Likewise, if you live in a very hot country like Nigeria, you could be using 10W40, 20W50, or 15W40.

If you check the owner’s manual of your vehicle, they will tell you the proper viscosity oil grade to use in your vehicle. However, the manufacturer doesn’t always take into account where you are living in the world or where you might be relocating too with your vehicle. Therefore, you need to understand the various types of motor oils so that you can make your own best judgment."

Car Talk › ......2003 Toyota Corolla....... Stop Using 20w50 by dru23(op): 10:51pm On Sep 15, 2019
Again I just pulled out the manual of 03 Corolla... This is the most popular car in Nigeria .. And most abused car with 20w50 mobil xhp 20w50.. The correct grade of oil regardless of weather is 5w30.. 20w50 is not good o .. You killing your engine gradually and car is not working efficiently... Again read the circle part.. If you have been using 20w50 please continue ,it is too late now ......but if just got a nice tokunbo, start using the correct oil either conventional or fully synthetic oil ... I prefer fully synthetic oil ... you get better protection.. And in none of the manual did they mention 20w50.....wake up people...... Wake up......

To all the Toyota camry lovers out there ....most of use are still using 20w50.... Very wrong oil ....like I said for all temperatures types 5w30... using 20w50 will in the end kill your engine ...Just a matter of time.. Below is A Toyota manual for 2005 Camry... please pay attention to circle parts ......... Enjoy .... If you have been using 20w50 .please continue until the engine is worn out and you ready to replace it .... Than you can start using correct grade.......

Car Talk › ... ...this Is Why You Should Read Your Owners Manual..... by dru23(op):
The hot debate about using 20w50 or when not to use it .. Again it is very important to always read your car manual.. Again am not a big fan of 20w50.. It has to do more with with people using 20w50 automatically because we are in hot climate.. People will say Nigeria is hot very hot it -7degree c just use 20w50 with out reading car manual..

Below is car manual for an accord that was pointed out to me.. If you read the circle small print .. It states don't use 10w40 or 20w50... It is essential you read before you start doing oil change .....big thanks to Dickerson for pointing it out....
