davidylan:It doesn't "seem" you confuse issues you are actually either confused in reality or stubbornly holding on to positions you cannot defend. And don't you go around assuming what you know nothing about implying that I go online ferreting for contradictions in the bible, we all grew up listening to all this cock and bull stories but some of use our brains and actually question what we are indoctrinated with. That is just one example I gave to which you couldn't give a straight answer all the other questions thrown up by others have also never been answered davidylan:If only you wouldn't selectively apply your principles or more importantly if only you would learn to question the dogma yu're indoctrinated with. |
LadyT:I am not upset but I felt your question was an unnecessary one but if you insist on my answering it I do remember the bible saying something like an eye for an eye and whatever that means to you is my answer. |
davidylan:Pardon me, but I think that is a case of the frying pan calling the kettle black. Was it not one of you folks who started this thread? the earlier thread was about all religions but na una come start this one again. |
LadyT:Selective writing is the more appropriate statement, you don't expect me to be writing the entire bible for you here do you? Why do you ask me the question? you should know what it is? it is in your nature to always confuse and obsfucate issues my point stands that selective justice was applied and even disproportionate justice IMO but you guys won't hear of it because it questions your belief in God. But I'm sure you will be quick to point accusing fingers at Allah, Shiva, Krishna or any of the other religion's Gods if there was something like that in their own scriptures. Hypocrites all of you and always selective in applying your principles. |
davidylan:He may not be real, but people like you who beleive this things without questioning them are very real and we do have to interact with you don't we? |
LadyT:You are now all singing discordant tunes meaning that you are only trying to justify your position at all cost. someone says it is forgivenes, another says it is symbolism of the ark, somebody else says my post is flawed when I only asked a simple question and painted a scenario when God himself gave the commandment saying thou shalt not kill and never gave a commandment saying thou shalt not lift up the ark if it falls. |
busybein:No need to get hot under the collar, I am not saying he should not have been forgiven I'm only asking why the other chap did not get the same treatment. |
LadyT:But isn't that a bit of selective justice on God's part? why God no strike am down immediately as he did to the person who tried to help in lifting the ark of covenant when it stumbled? If you were a judge and this two people were brought before you who would you kill and who would you give a light punishment? 1. Someone killed a man and started to panaki the wife 2. Your property was about to suffer some damage and someone rescued it It does look somehow doesn't it, and that is just one example. |
davidylan:There is no reason, all religion is the same beleiving they are the only ones who have the key and completely blind to anything else despite the fact that there is nothing tangible to what they hold on to being alll in the mind, it is just you "Christian" guys seem to be out in full force today |
davidylan:In your opinion, cos yu're the gatekeeper of heaven and hell abi? na yu get the database of people wey dey go to hell, no be so? that is assuming in the first instance that hell exists abi yu don see am before? any verifiable coordinates on how to get there? |
davidylan:Murdered a man and stole his wife too, if my memory serves me right. |
Adam Brody:Husshhh, , be careful in accusing our dear Rev/Pastor/Bro/etc David, people might think you're trying to soil his impecabble character. Though it is interesting to learn that our Dear David might be going down the path of his namesake in the bible (remember Uriah's wife) talking about all those "filthy" parts of the human anatomy in other sections of the site. Please let us allow him to come out of the closet at his own time and not force anything. |
@Huxley, That is some serious sh**t you dug up back there, I'm going back to do some research to verify this. LadyT:Some sort of clone then perhaps? remember the guy who was asking about the Holy Spirit and Sperm? not to worry, very soon you'll be telling me its some kind of mystery understandable only by some pastors e.t.c. |
@tonye-t No offence meant, but I do beleive yu're quoting the scientist you mentioned out of context. I don't think anyone on this forum is claiming to be a Know all. Infact, if there is anyone falling into that fallacy it is you "Christians" note the quotes who are fighting a battle no-one sent you. The scientist is only stating the limits of his knowledge but yu cannot capitalize on that and equate the definition of "God" that was forced out of him with the God of the bible or of any religion whatsoever. You have every right to beleive what you want to beleive but don't lend credence to your beliefs by twisting other people's statements, even your God wouldn't be proud of you for doing that if we are to beleive that he is everything you claim him to be. |
Abeg when someone almost dies from an encounter it is not something easily forgotten or mistaken. Scientists once believed that the earth was flat it wasn't just the catholic church. It was people. People that lived at that time believed the earth was flat. So while you are quick to shout that the Church has been wrong therefore they must be wrong, remember that not all were in the church and not all believed in God and they too didn't know. It's called being human and learning about our environment as time progresses. It's a pity we cannot rationalize due to contempt for one another.
Two major differences between the church and the philosophers/scientists of those times: 1. The philosophers were not killing anyone for their beliefs even if he believed the earth was hexagonal or even crumpled up like a piece of paper all they sought was to understand natural phenomenon around them while the Church laid claim to supernatural inspiration which must be obeyed hence their giving Socrates a cup of hemlock to kill him because according to them, he was an heretic. Have you ever heard of someone being killed for being a scientific heretic? 2. The philosophers were open to a new understanding of their world provided that someone else could prove that what they believed in the past was wrong but the same could not be said of the church who were bent on maintaining the status quo because it was supposedly from some supernatural/religious authority. I do like the fact that you appreciate the fact that "We human beings learn more about our environment as time progresses" but am I to take that to mean that you are open to the idea that there is a possibility of the non existence of witches and wizards? if you are open to that idea, then reconsider some of the points that some others have made here and they might just begin to make a little more sense. I cannot say much about the "Near Death Experience" you had (or someone you knew had) because NDEs have largely not being studied and people do come up with a lot of "Revelations" from such experiences but I wonder why they never agree at the same conclusion of what the afterlife is or if there is one and my personal rationalization of it is that it is the brain once again at work since our dream atimes can be so vivid (and some people do claim to see the future in their dreams) but yu and I know that such phenomenon is largely unreliable and unreproducable because we all have dreams and dreams are usually verified after the fact but dream studies do show a lot of brain activity during the REM phase of sleep (this is my personal belief as I know of no studies in that regards but borrowing only from sleep/dream studies). And you do miss the point in my earlier post, it is not about the church being wrong before hence being wrong again (even though that is also a very distinct possibility) rather it is to illustrate the danger inherent in just accepting religious views as fact without even bothering to see other perspectives to an issue or phenomenon or alternative explanations from science which are often backed with factual evidence and are usually reproducable unlike these religious views that have often only been passed around by word of mouth. I'll give you examples of some of the beliefs that existed in the past(which some people still beleive unfortunately and which you will probably laugh at) 1. That a rainbow comes up in the sky when some particular breed of water animal are doing the wild thing 2. That Lightning can be controlled and sent to kill someone and that there is a lightning bullet that will be removed from the body (edun ara) 3. That the spirit of the dead come to the market to transact and that you can see them when you bend and peer backwards in between your legs. Need I go on?, And I must say that most of the contempt has come from the religious bigots on this forum who show no desire in even trying to think things through at all rather coming to spew well rehearsed thoughtless cliches on the forum. |
janami:You sound confused and incoherent even though you do sound a bit poetic and rythmic like a rapper (which convinces me that you have only heard that statement from somewhere, a pastor probably but you have not pondered over it to truly understand what it means) but please do not confuse belief with knowledge arising from provable fact. There is nothing wrong in saying that you "beleive" that witches and wizards exist because science cannot prove conclusively otherwise that they don't but that is a far cry from claiming that you know them to exist as a matter of fact when you cannot prove conclusively by observation, induction or deduction that they do exist. Your statement is a fallacy and in fact violates the very principle of the Christian faith you profess which stresses the importance of faith and belief in God over knowledge due to the presumed limitation of human knowledge and the unlimited nature of God's knowledge. I wonder why people don't work out their individual beliefs and get their personal doctrine right instead of all these follow follow like zombie. No wonder why the deception and exploitation of our people by these charlartans is so prevalent. |
True words from a true patriot who walked his talk unlike many others, even while battling a life threatning disease he is still fighting for the good of the country. Someday, a government will recognize these heroes who dedicated themselves to the restoration of our nation and generations unborn will read of their words and deeds. @empress, You are missing the point, people may disagree on methods while agreeing to tackle a common cause. The fact that Ribadu made some mistakes while in office is no excuse for this witch hunt. It sends a very bad message about our willingness as a people to tackle what we have all identified as the major problem in our society when those who champion that battle are being hounded (not even in a civillized manner) by the people who are custodians of our future. It leaves a very bad state in the mouth and makes you wonder if we have truly come of age to take our future in our own hands. Please take note that while you may condemn Ribadu for being high-handed, over-zealous, or Baba Iyabo's hatchet man; no one has been able to prove any corruption on his part and it does say something about the man's integrity particularly when his replacement is known to parley around with the very looters of our country. I also know from personal experience that what Gani said about the EFCC was true about corrupt leaders coming to the conclusion that the fear of the EFCC was the beginning of wisdom as I once visited the PDP HQ in Abuja on behalf of an IT company I worked for at the time and I clearly remember one of the politicians who came in to see the Secretary of the party while we were there being ill at ease because we were all young men dressed in black suits who he thought were EFCC agents and he did utter that phrase and shared a laugh with the secretary after being reassured we were not from the EFCC. |
Carmelily:Maybe they want to get rid of the Atheists and Agnostics before they declare Armageddon and end the world? |
Chrisbenogor:abi o, and maize cob wey u don chop go be space shuttle to go into space abi? ROFLMAO |
Lol, I have read the quran. R u new to this thread? Because if you aren't you should already know this information by now. I know a lot about Islam, it's in my blood. I choose to be A Catholic Christian. My eyes are open, they were once blind when I didn't know the Lord, but oh how open they are now that I know him. Once again Lol, you seem to think you know everything. I have followed your posts and all I can do is laugh at them and your ignorance of the world, you know a few things I can give you that, but dear you are quite lost on a lot, but hey you are human and so am I. The difference between me and you is that I rely on perfection and you rely on what you know will never be perfection. How do I know that there are different demons, I have experienced them in my life. I have econtered them and I am grateful to God, I once said to Chris that I have had experiences and I wish not to share it with people because I don't want to get anyone's hopes up. I'd rather they believe without seeing. Demons have no love, if they did, they won't be demons, they would be angels. Love heals all things, with love one can conquer all things. If I love you, I won't hurt you, If I have love within me I won't hurt anyone. How can demons have love within themselves, if all they do is cause hurt? Sometimes I wonder about you "rational" beings. How can you be so irrational? Pretending to know what you don't know is really the lifeblood of religion? Well then I guess you have your own religion and you believe in it. You speak of yourself and don't even know it.
I also encountered David Copperfield on stage and beleived he could defy the law of gravity until I learnt about invisible cables and all that magical trick stuff. While not trying to belittle your past experiences and leaving room for the fact that no one knows everything, I would just like to ask if yu're sure that you've explored all possible rational and irrational explanations for yur "experiences"? remember that the entire catholic church once beleived that the earth was flat and killed some early philosophers who dared to think differently but now even a baby who is learning how to walk now knows that the philosophers were right and the almighty church and pope who were supposedly God's ambassadors on earth at the time were dead wrong. It is a pity we don't learn from history and keep on repeating the mistakes of our ancestors. |
Ndipe:In short, you are using the "If a witch cried yesterday and a child dies today, the crying witch must have killed the child" principle abi? yu are forgetting that: 1. The child could have died from natural causes 2. The child could have commited suicide 3. Someone who knows that every one would accuse the witch could have used that window of opportunity to kill the child. 4. The witch could actually have been crying while trying to save the child Why must the only possible reason for the child's death be the crying witch? things are not usually what they appear to be initially. Can yu answer these questions? 1. Do you have the man's previous medical history? 2. Do you know what else he did prior to kickin the juju pot or after he kicked it? 3. Are you even sure the story is true afterall we hear a lot of these urban myths or is it rural myth in this instance? |
@Jen33 Quite a thought provoking write-up you did there, a pity it is not much appreciated. You threw up a lot of questions but most of the respondents unfortunately couldn't think to the depth from which those questions have come and just perceived it as an attack on the Biblical Christian God. I do have to speak up for this biblical Christian God but not in the way most of the others before me have done and that is to say simply that the concept and the totality of God is too enormous and mind boggling for any one person or any group of people to solely lay claim to having the total revelation of God. It is somehow like the poem "The Three Limericks" of 3 blind men who claimed to have seen an elephant but could only describe the parts of the elephant they had touched. What we see of God are bits and pieces and snippets that are revealed unto us, I draw an analogy from man's creations as I do wonder what PCs, cars and other inventions created by us think of us (if they could develop a consciousness that is) and I also ask myself if what they think of us really matters to us in anyway (being their creators) and wonder if what we think of God really matters to God. We can only describe God using ideas and concepts rooted in our human sphere, a sphere those of us who beleive God exists claim was created by him, how then can we totally describe him when he is above and bigger than all that? for example, how would a PC describe its inventor when it can only think in terms of 1 and 0. I think one of the main problems of the human race is that we want to be sure of everything when it is obvious that we will always discover something new that we have never known before, the scientists at a time claimed the atom was the smallest indivisible particle in nature but that was before quarks were discovered, who knows what will be discovered tomorrow? I disagree with you that the bible does not encourage people to think or use their brains, rather it does the opposite because the verse that calls those who don't beleive in God "Fools" was from a thinking point of view as it was inconcievable to the writer "Solomon" that anyone could ponder at the wonders of creation and mankind and come to the conclusion that there was no intelligence behind its conception. It is the way the Christian faith has been preached and practiced to exploit the gullible that encourages such idiocy as to beleive things whithout thinking them through or questioning aspects you find puzzling. It only points out the limitation inherent in the knowledge of man and the supremacy of God. You would agree with me that mankind does not know everything. As to the supposed contradictions in the bible, I will only say that those contradictions have arisen due to the different eras through which the revelation of God has come and the fact that God had to interact with those who received his revelations at the level of the civillization of their time and utilizing concepts and ideas they could understand. Most of the supposed revelations have been largely misinterpreted and misunderstood down the ages but I beleive if God wanted them to be understood, they would have been passed down in plain language without ambiguity such as when the Bible says "Thou shalt not steal". For example when I encounter people who quarrel over evolution and creation I ask them this simple question "If the earth was created in 7 days? in whose "days" was it? it definitely couldn't have been Man's days because Man had not even been created at that time, if we then agree that it was created in God's days can anyone then define what God's days is? viewpoints that atimes seem divergent could become convergent when people approach issues with open minds. I explain the seeming contradiction by simply reminding them that there was no way Moses (who is beleived to have written Genesis) could have understood the physics behind Radiocarbon dating or the mathematics of millions and billions of numbers or the concept of infinity as an infinitely large number. In Moses days, I doubt if their counting ever went beyond thousands, the closest they came to infinity was "as many as the sands of the earth or the waters of the sea" which funny enough is still largely uncountable till today. In other words, God told him what he needed to know in a vocabulary he could understand which was the order of God's creation which also largely agrees with the scientific order of evolution and the fact that God existed and wanted to have a relationship with his creation. Some of the questions you raised are food for thought but you really cannot say with certainty that the God of the Bible could not exist because you are using concepts and ideas rooted in our human context to describe something beyond us. I beleive God exists but I cannot prove that he does and I'm aware that there are some questions that will probably go with me to my grave. I beleive in the God of the bible and in Jesus Christ his son not only because of what I've been told but because of what I've read in the bible and pondered over. I do acknowledge that it might not tell me everything but it does tell me what I need to know to chart my course through life and that is enough for me, anything more than that would be entering into the realm of vanity and fruitless exertions. I also accept those of other religions because Jesus states clearly that the 2 important laws to follow in life is the instruction to love God (or whatever you take God to be) i.e. having a moral compass that guides your behaviour and to love your neighbour (the entire human race). |
mazaje:I do love that your signature which states that pretending to know what you know nothing about is the life blood of religion, it is also the cause of all the chaos caused by religion in this world whether it is the catholic inquisition of the olden days, the Salem witch trials or even latter day terrorism. I beleive in God and in particular that of the bible but I cannot prove that he exists nor can I tell someone who beleives in Allah that he has gotten it wrong because we don't have the same background or growing up experiences who knows if our origins are interchanged I could perhaps have been brought up in a moslem family and be worshipping Allah right now. Religion is fine and dandy to the extent that it allows you to live in peace with yourself and your fellow man, anything beyond that is pretending to know what you know nothing about. There are some questions that will remain with us for eternity and are not worth getting bloody knucles over. |
Chrisbenogor:Why should it? this is a serious issue which affects all and even though it may sound funny, it is definitely no joke. |
busybein:So you are saying that God cannot protect his own? If that is how yu see your God then I don't want to have anything to do with such a puny god who can't stand up for those who beleive in him. |
abhosts:Scare tactics such as is used to scare young children to good behaviour, please we are all adults here at least I hope we all are. |

"Witches exist" yet people still queue at embassies waiting for visas. Y can't they just dissappear and land in "Manhattan", bullshit. "Witches/Money rituals exist" yet the central bank has never mentioned that currencies not printed by the Nigerian printing and minting company have appeared.
Why don't Aljanu and various djinns possess christians. Why don't satanic demons possess buddhists? Why doesn't Sango possess moslems, only arabic sounding spirit? I think if we can answer these then we'll have made great strides to answering the main question.
It is all schizophrenia and waning mental health my brother, I analyzed this phenomenon with a sister of mine who is a psychiatrist and we came to the conclusion that delusional people usually associate with myths and beliefs that are prevalent in their immediate environment. The equivalent of this in developed countries are those who claim to have been abducted by aliens or seen flying saucers and all that stuff. Some of all those people who confessed to being witches and wizards eating human flesh are simply mentally challenged/disturbed people, it is only unfortunate that instead of helping them with medication and social help as is done in developed countries, we end up lynching and burning them hence one of the reasons for our backwardness and lack of development as some of these people could have given birth to geniuses who could have pioneered discoveries and psychiatrists will tell you that there is a thin line between being a genius and being insane. The brain is a very complex organ and is still largely not well understood and mysterious, don't blame our people back home for believing in this things as people need something to find succor in with all the negativity that surrounds them. It is in human nature to reach out for something larger than you in times of trouble and distress. The only problem I have with our society is the fact that we seem to believe that everyone must think and act the same way and leave no room for deviance. |
mohawkchic:mohawkchick, I know that is not you in the picture cos that chic's hairdo is definitely no mohawk ![]() but that is some good and precise instruction though, you might have actually convinced some folks to grow a fro at the least you had me convinced until I remembered I was in a profession where such an exhuberant hair style would not be appreciated. |
Abeg make the man go siddon and work out how he will make life better for the people in his local government. Since the dawn of man, the strong and the powerful have always exploited the weak and if you can't beat them you definitely end up joining them except if you want to become kolomental with poverty and continuously unsatisfied longings. Some problems are inherent in human nature and there is no damn thing anyone can do to eliminate them, the only thing you can do is to create an environment where it is reduced to the barest minimum. Let nobody fool himself that this doesn't happen in developed countries, it is only that such countries are less conservative in their view of sex while their relative economic bouyancy, equitable distribution of wealth and standard of living reduces the desperation to make it at all cost afterall if everything else fails you, you have social welfare to fall upon to save you from starvation. My point is that things like this happen in every society, it only manifests differently for example I can assure you that similar things to what happens in the Nigerian banking sector happens in the showbiz and entertainment sector of most developed countries for example "Hollywood" and I'm not talking about stars who have made it only; remember that for every Halle Berry and Angelina Jolie you see, there are hundreds of budding startlets who have bit the dust a long time ago. Besides, each society has its red light district (even the so called Sharia societies) and if the country's economic situation has turned our banks into red light districts for the moneybags then it is simply another example of the "crossover success" potential of the sex industry afterall stranger things has happened in the past such as religious temples turning into brothels and that is not an unmitigated disaster no matter how distasteful it sounds. As long as we have men in "high places" with unlimited libidos who would do anything to plough any available "bermuda triangle" and girls and women who are either willing to do anything to become "successful" or economically desperate enough to escape the economic rat race that Nigeria has become, this "issue" will remain with us, it is simply the law of demand and supply at work. Notice my use of the term "issue" and not "problem", this is because I can almost assure you that some of those who do these things don't see it as a problem and are even asking themselve what the Chairman's beef is maybe na because him daughter no get job for bank. There is no one solution for such an issue that has its roots deep in the prevailing economic situation and the societal mindset that allows we menfolk to "fool around", the chairman is simply at his wit's end and blabbing rubbish. |
