I am shocked that the Igbos are not speaking up at the apparent siege laid on their land by uniformed person of different categories. They range from Army, Navy, Police, Civil Defence, Customs, FRSC, etc. My journey had taken me by road from Isele-Mkpitime, where I had gone to pay tribute to a Nigerian icon, Chief (Dr) P.K.C. Isagba, the Odogwu of Isele-Mkpitime. He was one of the first Nigerians to believe in my ability as a young fledgling lawyer. I had been handling his cases whilst at Chief Gani Fawehinmi’s Chambers. When I left as Deputy Head to set up my practice in January 1986, Chief f Isagba personally went to Chief Gani Fawehinmi, to allow him move his files to me, to continue handling his cases; a request the amiable and selfless Gani granted immediately. So, Chief Isagba became my first major client as a tottering practising lawyer, trying to find my groggy feet. He became my bossom friend and elder brother.

My journey from Isele-Mkpitime, through Asaba, to Port-Harcourt, told me clearly that the entire Igbo land is locked down in a physical, psychological and mental siege, reminiscent of a civil war time.

When the Civil War ended January 15, 1970, the then military ruler, General “Jack” Yakubu Gowon, who became Head of State, at 31 and a bachelor, proclaimed the three Rs: “Reconciliation, Reconstruction and Rehabilitation”, which heralded his policy of “No Victor, No Vanquished”. This was after the unfortunate failure of the 4th-5th January, 1967, of the “Aburi Accord”, that would have prevented the bloody war in which over 2 million civilians and 100, 000 military combatants were killed. Or, was it an historical mistake that these people who had already manufactured “Ogbunigwe” (series of weapons, that included detonation mines, IED, and rocket propelled missiles), with which they prosecuted the Nigeria – Biafra war between 1967 and 1970, were prevented from leaving Nigeria? Perhaps, we would today have had a Japan, Singapore or South Korea lying side by side a sprawling “giant of Africa” on clay legs.

These policies were meant to quickly heal the gaping wounds of the gruesome blood-letting, forget the horrors and evils of the fratricidal war and quickly reintegrate the Igbos into the society.

But, have these hardworking, gregarious “Jews” of Nigeria been reconciled, rehabilitated and reintegrated into the mainstream of the Nigerian society? I doubt it. Simple proof: show me any Igbo man in today’s all powerful cabal kitchen cabinet of PMB’s Government. My journey from Isele-Mkpitime, Delta State, through Asaba, Onitsha, Oba, Oraifite, Okija, Ihiala, Mgbidi, Awomama, Owerri, Aba to Port-Harcourt, was a strangulating reminder that the Igbos, inspite of their unquantifiable contributions to the commerce, industry and innovations that drive the non-oil sector of the Nigerian economy and give it oxygen, are nearly a conquered people. The check-points along the above stretch of road are nauseating and asphyxiating, as the security agencies, including para-military ones out-do each other to harass, torment, search, intimidate and extort money from travelers.

Earlier journeys by road (I travel a lot on professional duties), had shown me the same siege through countless roadblocks: Enugu, through the Ugwogo Nike-Opi-Nsukka Road; Amansea in Awka-Ugwuoba Oji River; Nnewi, Alor, Ekwulobia, Amesi, Ugar, Umuchu; Okigwe, Awgu and Ituku Ozalla, Umuahia and Isiala-Ngwa, on Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway. On the Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene highway, you have exasperating road blocks at Michael Okpara University junction; Isingwu-Nkweogwu junction of the Isuikwuato-Uzuakoli-Ajayi-Igbere road; and the 14 Brigade Army barracks junction at the Ohafia-Arochukwu highway.

As you are crossing one check point, a mere look ahead of you, of less than half a kilometer, will reveal another barricade. It is all so frustrating. There is no war, or security breach. South East is not North East where Boko Haram still calls the shots (forget about Government’s pet words of “we have degraded Boko Haram”; Boko Haram is still very potent, controlling large areas, killing and maiming people on a daily basis. Their representative said that much at the 2nd May, 2017, Re-Union meeting of the 2014 National Conference delegates at Daar Communications Centre, Abuja, where I delivered the keynote address).

Yet, in this Boko Haram-ravaged region, you would not find this armada of security, treating the entire geo-political zone made up of five states (the least in Nigeria; some others have seven states), like a conquered territory.

It is only the recent suit by my good friend, Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, (six of us founded the Civil Liberties Organization (CLO) – the first human rights body in Nigeria-on 15th October, 1987), over ''marginalisation of the South East region”, that has perhaps brought to the front burner, these disturbing tons of injustice. That is why no one can ignore them.

Nigeria is indeed a very interesting country. The many imbalances in our economic, political, and religious structures have always evolved “messiahs” of some sort. Unfortunately the youths have been at the mercies of these merchants and their deceptive antics. From the Niger Delta Militancy to Boko Haram Insurgency, men and women who claimed to be fighting for justice have been found to be nothing but merchants taking advantage of our collective heritage.

Nnamdi Kanu is the new boy on the block. He has proved to be a master of the game. With well oiled deception and propaganda machinery he has become the latest “hero” in town. He promised us eldorado in his so called Biafra Republic. He called Nigeria a zoo, and its inhabitant’s baboons. He talked about political marginalization, convincing us on why we must all jettison Nigeria for Biafra.

For once in my adult life, I was tempted to see reasons with Kanu. Why? Because Ralph Uwazuirike was a scam, a self-serving agitator whose god is his belly. I therefore resigned to fate that all Biafran agitators are nothing but merchants desperate to sell their wares to the leadership of the Nigerian state; they want a chunk of the national cake. I couldn’t have been convinced by MASSOB and its affiliates who dominated the South-East for about ten (10) years, until the “ninja man” Kanu appeared on the scene.

He started as being part of a larger MASSOB agitation, broadcasting propaganda materials from the United Kingdom through the infamous Biafra Radio. But gradually but stealthingly, MASSOB was dethroned, Unwazuirike had had his fair share of the national cake; as Kanu sold himself as the new man to lead the charge.

Indeed, Kanu was smart. He added something unique to Unwazuirike’s gruff approach – Judaism, the opium of the Igbo people. Presenting himself as a Judaist, Kanu knew he will consolidate on the fairytale that the Igbos shares the same ancestry with Israel.

So this is how I fell for the Kanu’s sham. So while he was in custody, I joined in the agitation calling for his release. From Aba to Enugu, I fought hard and availed my contributions in the campaign for his release. I was at the Federal High Court, Abuja, many times. Staged series of protests between the Unity Fountain and Federal Secretariat countless times; and led various social media campaigns on why Kanu must be free.

Fortunately, freedom came at last!!! Kanu was granted bail. But that is where my problem began.

Suddenly, Kanu moved from being a freedom fighter to a political power house. Politicians, business moguls, and religious leaders lined up and paid their way to have audience with him. The social media is littered with pictures of those who had the “rare privilege” of securing audience with the IPOB leader. Even Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State paid his way by offering Nnamdi Kanu $50,000 and two Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) as political patronage, which Kanu gladly accepted as gifts.

On his part, Rochas Okorocha, is wooing Kanu to declare his membership of APC. The Imo State Governor has also promised him the party’s senatorial ticket come 2019, and a cash-backing of N50 Million. All these are going on while credulous poor men, women and children who don’t have much to give Kanu but their unalloyed support kneel before the IPOB leader to receive some forms of spiritual blessings. INDEED KANU IS A SMART CROOK.

While these gullible men and women keep the agitation alive in their hearts, Kanu has already positioned himself as the godfather of Igbo politics ahead of 2019. He has suddenly become powerful than all the South-East Governors put together. From Enugu to Owerri, Kanu will surely have a say on who eventually emerges as Governor, Senator, and Member of the House of Representatives; himself already sure of a Senatorial seat at the National Assembly. Wao! Nigeria My Country!

Just few years ago, the name Nnamdi Kanu did not ring a bell in the entire Igbo land. He was just another hustler in the United Kingdom trying to make ends meet. But today, Kanu is at the very top, dinning and winning with the great and mighty, while his naive foot soldiers hope in vain for that day when Biafra shall be free.

In clear terms and for the umpteenth time, Igbos want referendum and not war. We want to have a referendum towards actualisation of Biafra.

In the event of break up, we will have only three major countries out of Nigeria, thus this 6 present geopolitical zones will be scrapped immediately given way for the three biggest tribes to share the minorities.

Having said that, part of SS (the Igbo speaking part) will go to East while the rest will join SW. The end of Niger Delta.

Coming to Middle belt, part of Kogi, Benue and all those that shared boundaries with Biafra will go with them while the part that shares boundaries with North and West will go to their cousins.

If the SW has the balls(which I believe they'll grow by then) Will reclaim kwara state and other neighborhoods nearer to them.

My question is that WHAT IS THE CONTRIBUTION OF SOUTH EAST TO NIGERIAN ECONOMY

Wisdom is always a good guidance. One of the good reasons, according to you, why IPOB wants out of Nigeria is southeast does not contribute anything to Nigeria's growth. It is not nice for a person to reap where he/she did not sow. However, the taste of the pudding is in the eating. If Biafra should be actualized, we shall know who holds the solution to the equation. By the way, why is Nigeria terribly worried about the agitation to secede from Nigeria by the so-called group or section that allegedly contributes nothing to the economy of cesspit called Nigeria?
I have never viewed Nigeria as anything more than a worthless dirt.

The so-called quit notice is moronic as the people who issued it. As of now, no section of the cesspit called Nigeria has the authority to ask fellow Nigerians to vacate their places of abode. Even if Biafra is actualized tomorrow, both Biafrans and Nigerians or any other nation state can order the nationals of another country to vacate without diplomatic consequences. Therefore the so-called quit notice from the so-called Arewa Youth is a ranting of ants.

The Northern Elders’ Forum (NEF), on Friday expressed support to the call by the Coalition of Northern Youth Groups for Igbos to leave the region within three months.

The group made its position known despite widespread condemnation that followed the ultimatum earlier handed by the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum.

The forum expressed “disappointment” with the Northern Governors’ Forum for disowning the youth groups.

Ango Abdullahi, the NEF spokesperson, told journalists in Zaria on Friday that it was hypocritical for the Igbos to continue to live in other parts of the country while agitating for Nigeria’s break up.

Mr. Abdullahi said: “I am disappointed in the decision taken by Northern Governors’ Forum disowning and condemning the agitation by this young agile and progressive youth groups.

“Let me ask these Northern governors, whom are they representing, are they representing spirits, ghost or people of the north?

“Recently, people from eastern part of this country, specifically Igbo, were busy calling for the Sovereign State of Biafra and from all indication their leaders including governors are behind them.”

According to him, whoever feels Nigeria “is not conducive for him” let him quit, adding that what the northern youth groups did was not a sin.”

He lamented that none of the Northern governors reacted to the persistent call for the actualisation of Biafra and other agitations.

Mr. Abdullahi said when Nnamdi Kanu was released on bail recently, over 100 vehicles escorted him to his residence including big personalities from the south-west and south-east.

“This is somebody who has been agitating for the breakup of Nigeria but his people were behind him, therefore, I am behind the youths.

“This is because the Northern youths are pushed to the wall, we have been calming them down in any event similar to this,” he noted.

Speaking specifically on the Igbos, Mr. Abdullahi said the people from the south were always pretending that people from the north were cheating them.

“These people always pretend that the North is cheating them, not minding the fact that Southern Nigeria was developed by resources from the North.

“Please, look for a book written by Adamu FiKa, the Waziri of FiKa on Nigeria’s budget before and after independence.

“Each year, up to the time Nigeria gained its independence, none of the two regions was able to provide for itself.

“I mean none of the Western and Eastern regions had the money to effectively run the affairs of its region until they get financial support from the Northern region,” he said.

He recalled that the tradition had remained during the colonial masters and nothing changed after they left the country.

Mr. Abdullahi said it was the same money from the North that was used to construct Nigerian Railways, refineries and other facilities.

“First oil exploration was conducted using money from groundnut pyramid, cotton, hide and skin among other cash crops from Northern Nigeria.

“However, these people tend to forget all these goodies provided by the North toward ensuring the unity and corporate existence of Nigeria.

“They always look down on us, feeling that Northerners are parasites in this country,” he said. (NAN)

MAY 30th 2017 has gone down as a date that the Igbo people showed, with total accord, that they are dead serious about their quest for freedom. The sit-at-home call by the pro-Biafra groups, the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, and the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, was observed by Ndi Igbo all over the country, with the South East totally locked down.
Streets and highways were empty of commercial or vehicular activities, except for the vehicles of law-enforcement agencies which patrolled to maintain law and order. The skies over major cities such as Aba, Enugu, Onitsha, Owerri and Umuahia were patrolled by military jets and helicopters. Unlike other times when the pro-Biafra groups called for mass actions through peaceful street protests which led to loss of lives as a result of shootings by the army and police, no one was in sight to be shot.
Already, the initial mockery that greeted the Biafra independence campaign about two years ago is giving way to a new template for reality check. When IPOB called its first protests just before its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, was arrested in December 2015, former President Olusegun Obasanjo mocked the protesting youth, saying they were “looking for money”.
Others said they were unemployed youth given money by some politicians to carry out the protests for undisclosed political gains. In other words they were rented crowds. Unless care is taken and soon, if the masses begin to respond in this manner to calls for boycotts of the civic activities that make us all Nigerians, such as elections, the forth-coming census and what not, overwhelming pressure might force that referendum to take place. As I said, the result is likely to be an overwhelming “Yes”. What are the scenarios that will likely take shape thereafter?

Number one scenario, if the Nigerian State succumbs to a referendum, it is likely to be restricted to the people of the South East. Nigerian is unlikely to concede the former Eastern Region (which is the definitive geo-polity frequently portrayed as Biafra by its promoters) as the breakaway enclave. It will not give up the oil and gas resources that feed its treasury with free rent. It is also unlikely that the non-South Easterners will sign to be included in the Biafra. So, it is far safer for the Biafra activists to scale down their geo-political boundaries to a landlocked South East.

That being so, I dare say that being landlocked is not the end of the world. Switzerland, Austria, Botswana and Rwanda are landlocked, yet they are either developed or rapidly developing countries within their continents. Those who are predicting doom for a landlocked Biafra could be seriously mistaken. During the war, when the population of the defunct Biafra was largely on the run, there was no fuel scarcity. Biafran scientists created machines and technologies to fight the war and keep the system running.
A peaceful, landlocked Biafra, with the sheer power of the Igbo creative might unleashed, can only take-off like a rocket, though the initial stages will be very trying. Biafra might become the first African country to export the type of technologies that we currently buy from Europe, America and Asia to African countries within ten years. People should always remember that it is not natural resources that make a country great but its human resources of which the Igbo boast one of the most premium qualities in Africa. Even at that, the resources (oil, gas, coal, limestone and others) are there in enough quantities to serve the needs of the republic.
On the other hand, Biafra could run into an initial face-off between factions such as IPOB and MASSOB for supremacy. MASSOB might claim it restarted the struggle that won the independence while IPOB which is far more radical could claim to be the group that won the independence. If this is not sorted out amicably, Biafra could face the South Sudan scenario between President Salva Kiir and his estranged Deputy, Riek Machar, though the South Sudan conflict is mostly ethnic-based as opposed to the fact that Biafra will be a country of a homogenous ethnic stock.
Another scenario is that Igbo property left behind in Nigeria will probably be confiscated. States can make laws to appropriate them. That is a sacrifice the Igbos who own property in Nigeria outside the South East must be prepared to make. You cannot eat your cake and have it. Nigerians will likely tell you that “out is out”, as the Europeans are telling Britain after Brexit. Igbos who refuse to relocate to their country will be dehumanised as unwanted foreigners. Ndi Igbo, faced with the South East as Biafra, must be ready to start life afresh from the scratch, with the firm determination never to repeat the mistakes that makes Nigeria unworkable.
The break away of Biafra will likely lead to a break-up of the rest of this otherwise blessed nation. With a leg of the Tripod gone, the rest of the superstructure cannot stand for long. With the Igbo people gone to their own country, it is unlikely that the Yoruba people will like to live under the servitude of the North. They will become a very vulnerable junior partner to Arewa, a situation they are unlikely to live with for long. They will also want to go and form their own country. They already have fantastic natural geopolitical advantages which they will simply leverage on and move on with their lives. But will the North also allow them to go in peace?
The Ijaw nation, in particular, is likely to assert its independence. The North will, like Biafra, become landlocked. If Biafra goes, there is no way the rest of the country will continue happily ever after.
Nigeria is like an intricately knitted fabric. Cut the thread at any point and the rest will come undone. At this point, we probably have the last opportunity to sort out the problems militating against genuine unity in our country.
Time is running out on Nigeria as we know it. Already, the hearts of majority of Igbo people have left Nigeria. It will take some earth-shaking measures to bring them back.
It has nothing to do with giving them an “Igbo president”. If, for instance, the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in a most unlikely scenario, picks any of such individuals as Chris Ngige, Ogbonnaya Onu, Rochas or Okorocha Ken Nnamani to stand as a figurehead president, they will call Sokoto, Katsina or Kaduna every morning to take instructions for their daily work. It will make no difference for the Igbo or Nigeria.
There is no alternative to restructuring Nigeria to allow the federating units the freedom to develop at their respective paces within the overall Nigerian commonwealth. The Nigerian people need freedom. That is the irreducible minimum for real change.
If restructuring will not be possible, then let those who believe Igbo people will die if granted Biafra join hands in granting them independence. Allow them to “go and die” and see if they will actually die or become the toast of the African continent within the lifetime of most of us!

The scenario # one has been the main reason Nigeria is found in dilapidated form with certain ethnic minority groups trolled to imbecility. We Nigerian's are glad - the South-East has proven to the world they had and will never have any good intentions towards the Niger-Delta. The Biafran struggle was about the oil in the Niger-Delta and till this day it is still about the oil in the Niger-Delta.

The recent post showing Nigeria - how little the South-East is producing did not come as a shock to many of us become we know the South-East has difficulty courting sincerity and truthfulness. Anambra state did not make a dime in 2016 but recieved of 60BN naira from the center - most of this money comes from oil drilled in the Niger-Delta.
