As it stands Nigeria's victory over Iceland put everything back in their own hands ahead of the final round of Group D games. Will it be Nigeria, Argentina or Iceland who join Croatia in the knockout stages? Both goals were scored in the second half by Ahmed Musa. The first goal came in the 49th minute, resulting in Iceland defender Ragnar Sigurðsson requiring medical attention on the pitch. Musa’s second goal came in the 75th minute, when he rounded Iceland goalkeeper Gylfi Sigurðsson, who had strayed from the net to follow the ball. Iceland then missed a penalty awarded late in the game. Croatia is now on top of the group with 6 points, Nigeria second with 3 points, with Iceland and Argentina trailing behind with one point each. Argentina were humbled by Croatia in their second group games and now Argentina’s chances of qualifying for next round hing by a thread really. Croatia scored twice without a reply and qualified for the knockout stages as group winners. Ante Rebic and Modric scored after the break to ensure a rather comfortable 2-0 win over Argentina. The second match for the Super Eagles |
There are plenty of familiar names in the Nigeria squad though. No less than seven Premier League players are present, and their forward line is awash with Premier League players past and present. Odion Ighalo, Kelechi Iheanacho, Alex Iwobi, and Ahmed Musa all compete for a starting berth, and it’s this attacking presence that will give them hope. Indeed, Nigeria have scored in seven of their last ten matches overall, and they’re facing a Croatia side who have conceded at least once in ten of their last 15 matches. The favourites have scored in nine of these games though, whilst Nigeria have conceded in seven of their last ten too. |
