Negro_Ntns: Lol... Lagos was not developed by FG. You have no clue what development is if Ibadan, to you, is nothing but a slum.

When you get your compass properly calibrated and oriented to true North, not magnetic North...but true North, then return for dialogue and lessons.
Then who developed Lagos?
If not the colonialists and FG.
I agree that the whole of Ibadan is not slum but the greater part is.
PoliticsRe: Constitution Amendment: Fashola Canvasses State Police, Special Status For Lagos by eaglechild(op): 11:01pm On Nov 17, 2012
Negro_Ntns: So why arent these places in SE getting developments? Your governors do not face the problem of high population density like Lagos, Kano, Ibadan but yet collect huge chunks of allocation....what do they do with the money if they are not using it for development?

Ibadan was the largest and most populous urban center only behind Cairo in the entire Africa and it stayed in that position uptill shortly after independence. People came to Ibadan from all over West and North Africa.

Kano was a huge city and a center of trade and learning and West Africans and Northern Africans came to Kano to settle and live. Exports, imports....huge market exchange across the Soudan goes through Kano.

No place in SE can boast of any market of comparable standard and scale as these two and I say if it wasnt so in the history, it can happen now.....yourpeople can change history. You can surpass Ibadan, Kano, Lagos. How are you going to do it point B?

You need schemes and projects funded by governors of your states to make the region attractive to trade and business.

Do you know what makes a woman hot and appealing? Its a magic called "come get me". Women that understand how this magic work attract a fitting partner and they keep him locked in. If he tries to leave they bring out "come get me" and he changes his mind and stays.

SE states need a couple of "come get me" projects. Do not wait on FG, your people and your governors must begin the small and medium scale renewal and then invite investments from FG for the high scale build out.
The last time i checked my geography book the largets market in West Africa was somewhere in the SE.
And i beliieve that same state just flagged off a refinery.

Negro_Ntns: ......and i forgot to add to the response on "Lagos was developed as a capital" point.

Abuja should be the one labeled as a developed city on capital status. Abuka was a bush, nobody knew the place, no history, no international market, beside Gwari farmers nobody goes there. Look at Abuja now!

So yes we can say Abuja has special status and wholly developed for its status as capital but that will be untrue for Lagos.
I beieve u are not serious right?
Name any meaningful/major infrastructure in Lagos that came from ur so called petty trade of Oba of Lagos with the portugese?
Next u'll tell me that third mainland bridge was built by Lagos fishermen.
Pls Lagos is what it is today BECAUSE it was made the capital of Nigeria.
Pls do not mention Ibadan(a relic), it is basically an overpopulated slum (which goes to prove that Lagos survived bc it was made capital), and it's population is not growing as fast as Abuja,Enugu,PH, Uyo or Owerri so i dont get ur point.
That the word Lagos came from the portugese does not mean that a multi million cowrie trade was going on btw the two.
They simply got there first and named it.
It's like a wild animal scent marking it's territory with urine.
PoliticsRe: Constitution Amendment: Fashola Canvasses State Police, Special Status For Lagos by eaglechild(op): 10:48am On Nov 17, 2012
Negro_Ntns: PointB,

Development follows population. When SS and SE attract migrants like Lagos does, Im sure development will come.
What are u trying to say?
Lagos has been the nation's capital and it's development results from oil wealth derived from the SS and SE not from any stroke of genius of the state govt.
IMO Lagos is largely self sustaining and even though governing it may seem demanding, there's is a lot of resources to do that.
PoliticsRe: Constitution Amendment: Fashola Canvasses State Police, Special Status For Lagos by eaglechild(op): 10:47am On Nov 17, 2012
PointB: I trust David Mark to agree. Lol. He is an astute politrickcian.

Is Lagos not already of 'special status'? I mean which other state is controlled by the past governor, to the extent that a huge percentage of Tax revenue finds its way to his pocket?

Which other state has been allowed to corner a huge chunk of Federal road to run private transport company - Babatunde Raji Transport (BRT)?

Which state shoots at Okada riders, hastening their extinction so that they can promote their Private Taxis company?

@Fashoal, over populated Lagos already has special status. What Nigeria need now is to designated investment and resources to other Zones - SE, SS. Those two oil producing Zones should receive massive government investment. They are the ones that deserve any 'new' special status, not Lagos. Lagos is not the only state in Nigeria.
Thanks bro
That's what Fashole does not seem to understand.
If state policing is to be adopted then Lagos shld not be singled out as SPECIAL, rather a wholistic approach shld be taken.

PoliticsConstitution Amendment: Fashola Canvasses State Police, Special Status For Lagos by eaglechild(op): 9:26pm On Nov 16, 2012
President of the Senate, Senator David Mark,
and Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos
State have agreed on the need to give Lagos
State a special status in the constitution.
They said this, yesterday, at the South-West
zonal public hearing on proposed amendment
of the 1999 Constitution, in Lagos. Also,
Senator Gbenga Ashafa (ACN, Lagos East)
justified the need to accord Lagos a special
status, saying: “From the opinions of the
people of this district, there is no going back
on our resolve that Lagos be given Special
Status.
I have continually stressed that Lagos remains
the commercial and industrial capital of
Nigeria in spite of Abuja. It is also the
largest employer of labour in Nigeria, a
situation, which only a special status can
sustain and enhance for the benefit and
welfare of all Nigerians.”
This came as Mark dismissed insinuations that
the leadership of the National Assembly had
a hidden agenda in reviewing the 1999
Constitution. He explained that the public
hearings being held across the six geo-
political zones of the federation, were aimed
at ensuring that Nigerians make contributions
to the constitution amendment exercise.
No hidden agenda – Mark
Dismissing allegations of a hidden agenda,
Mark said: “The Senate and indeed, the
National Assembly has no hidden agenda.
Nobody can say what will happen and what
will not happen. There are so many topics
that are before us, but we may not be able
to take all of them in one single sweep.”
Fashola restates need for state police
On his part, Fashola restated his stand on the
need for a state police and a special status
given to Lagos State. He said: “As far as Lagos
State is concerned, its strategic importance to
the Federal Republic of Nigeria cannot be
over-emphasized; its contributions in terms
of GDP, political, social and economic
development cannot be argued. All those
who have defined themselves in this country
can call Lagos their first or second home.
“Lagos is a place where you would see
somebody who looks like you, who dresses
like you, who eats your kind of food and who
speaks your language. Lagos State was a
federal capital of Nigeria but this is the only
former capital that has been left on its own.
And I think that in the national interest,
Lagos now deserves and should be treated as
a special state.”
I do not say it because of Lagos, but I say it
because of Nigeria. This is where all the food
producing regions sell their food, this is the
market for the whole country. Now, the
reality is that if this state (Lagos) does not
prosper, prosperity will become difficult in
any part of the country. And therefore, it is
my humble opinion that Lagos be given a
special status.”
While identifying the limitation of time, he
advised the leadership of the National
Assembly to take necessary steps that will
ensure the process ends well. Speaking
further, Fashola said it was imperative for
each state in the federation to develop at its
own pace saying that will enhance
development in the country.
According to him, “a federal arrangement for
this country, in my view, is not negotiable.
We are so different yet the same and the
best way therefore is to allow each
independent state to develop at its own
speed, according to its own resources,
according to its own ability in a way that the
prosperity of each state can become the
prosperity of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
So to issues like fiscal federalism and political
federalism, I will put them on the top of the
line. What is most important to deal with is
our national security because without national
security, people will continue to live in fear
and there is very little we can do. It is only
in an area of peace and security that we can
do business, that we can govern and plan.
Therefore until each state is able to enforce
its own laws, we will continue to be beset
with this problem of national security. And
my advocacy for a state police does not
mean that it will exist without the federal
authority, but very clearly, the central
government has been unable to recruit
enough personnel to distribute across the
state.
There state laws relating to local issues that
even the federal police is not bothered about
any more. In advisory manner, the issue of
more states and more regions must be
looked at by balancing the agitation with
realities of our finances.
On the one side, the Nigerian people are
strong in their views that there is too much
money being spent in running governance.
Let me also advise that the constitution does
not create any organ without responsibility
and with responsibility comes personnel. So,
if you decide to create more regions and
more states, it will bring more money.”
Earlier in his remarks, the Senate Minority
Whip, Senator Ganiyu Solomon explained that
the zonal public hearing was aimed at
bringing the review closer to the people.
Senator Solomon assured people from the
South West that the committee would
consider all inputs in the ongoing process to
amend the constitution.

Why does it have to be sth controversial?
Lagos is not particularly the expert at agric and they dont have the land.
If they claim to have made the survey, they can provide the skills they claim to possess and Ogun will provide the land without having to "allocate" it.
A patnership can still hold without all the ado.

Car TalkRe: Why Do Nigerians Dislike Nissan Cars? by eaglechild: 10:18pm On Oct 22, 2012
Siena: Your friend's method of checking fuel consumption is seriously flawed. You can't work out consumption data by saying a 100-litre tank runs dry in a week, driving from Ketu to Marina daily. That means nothing. I don't know what the route is like - distance, average speeds reached on these trips, coolant temperature (does the engine ever get up to full operating temp?) Short trips are heavier on fuel than long ones.

And I feel your friend is expecting too much from his Nissan Altima. It has a big 2,5L motor mated to a heavy automatic tranny, and he expects it to be as economical as a Toyota Corolla 1,4. To produce good power, you need to produce heat. And to produce heat, you need to burn fuel, end of. If your buddy feels the Altima is too juicy, there's always the Nissan Sunny 1,4L.
Thanks a lot.
Dont know why someone would expect a 2.5l engine car to have the same fuel consumption as a 2.2l or 1.8l.
Nissan makes cars for pple who enjoy the art of driving and cant afford the luxury brands.
They make the best engines in the japanese lineup and their cars are pretty reliable.
Toyotas are good but too ubiquitous and simplistic (i guess that's what makes them durable and easy to work on).
Driving a toyota is like eating garri every afternoon(boring).
