Kalabari were actually neigbours with Bonny in the Rio Real but had to move southern ward after countless defeats in wars with Bonny. Bonny and Kalabari shared a lot in common with Kalabari influencing Bonny in Language over her aboriginal Ndoki dialect. Any wonder you hear names like Fubara, Tonye, Alabo, Senibo, Ibinabo bore by each.

The meaning of Fubara in Kalabari was copied from Fionnbarra (Portuguese) and given to a Diety in ancient times. But the meaning remained the same.

Fubara as a name has Irish origin (Finbar) of whom the early Portuguese sailors among whom where Catholic missionaries in our shores bore Finbhara. Whether Finbar, Finbhara or Fubara each has similar meanings. Fairheads or Forehead.
