IgbereTV reports that Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, yesterday, inspected the ongoing massive infrastructural development in the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu, being executed by his administration, in line with its concerted efforts to reposition the foremost state-owned institute to transit into a degree-awarding institution.

It would be recalled that shortly after the inauguration of the IMT Governing Council under the leadership of Deaconess (Mrs.) Ifeoma Nwobodo, the institute got approval from the Enugu State Executive Council (EXCO) to construct four massive academic buildings and other structures at the cost of N810 million.

The Ugwuanyi administration in furtherance of its commitment to return IMT to its past glory also approved the sum of N282 million for the prime institution to pursue the re-accreditation of 41 academic programmes.

Apart from all these landmark interventions in IMT, including rehabilitation of internal roads, renovation of the Administrative Block, Mass Communication Block and other buildings, it is on record that the institute, under this present administration, had its first convocation after 11 years.

Gov. Ugwuanyi, who was led round the project sites by Deaconess (Mrs.) Nwobodo, the Director of Works and Services, Engr. Dr. Charles Ajah and other management staff of the institution, expressed satisfaction with the progress of work.

The governor was accompanied by his Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Greg Nnaji, Deputy Chief of Staff, Prof. Malachy Okwueze and the Special Adviser on Special Duties, Hon. Uwakwe Azikiwe, among others.

HealthCOVID-19: Governor Ikpeazu's Two Aides Test Positive by EBMedia(op): 6:49pm On Jun 02, 2020
Breaking!!! COVID-19: Ikpeazu, Family Members Tests Negative As His Two Aides Tests Positive (Photos)

IgbereTV reports that Abia State Governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, his wife, Mrs Nkechi Ikpeazu, their children and all members of Abia’s first family have tested negative to COVID -19, following the release of results of their samples taken on Saturday, 30th May, 2020.

A statement to that effect personally signed by Governor Ikpeazu reads: “Leading this battle from the front as your Governor, I and all members of the first family subjected ourselves to COVID-19 tests on Saturday, 30th May, 2020 and the results came out negative today.

"Unfortunately, results of two of my aides who also subjected themselves to COVID-19 tests were positive while others turned in negative results. We are confident that within days, the currently asymptomatic positive patients who are now isolated will be successfully nursed back to good health, with God on our side," he said.

Continuing, Ikpeazu said, ”The new phase of the fight against COVID-19 in Abia will require that the state embark on massive tests of citizens to achieve at least 10% coverage of our population at the initial stage of the exercise.

“To this end, the state epidemiologist has been directed to work out modalities for case searches using sample population size of between 30 to 250 persons, in some densely populated LGAs of the state.

”Meanwhile, we cannot win and save lives as long as we continue to stigmatize our patients. If any person contracts COVID-19, it will be saddening but it is neither criminal nor is it necessarily the person's fault. Let me put it on record that statistics show that far more people recover from the virus than those who pass away from it", he said.

Meanwhile, Governor Ikpeazu has also directed all Chairmen of the 17 Local Government Areas of the State, together with their deputies, to present themselves for COVID 19 test.

“Further to my earlier directive on the testing of members of the State Executive Council, I wish to direct that all Transition Council Chairmen of our 17 LGAs, and their Deputies, present themselves for COVID-19 tests and thereafter isolate themselves pending the release of their test results.

"I urge all citizens and residents to eschew rumor mongering and get involved in the battle against COVID-19. Take responsibility because Abia is ready to win this battle with all hands on deck.”

Every Community In Anambra To Get A Burial Ground As Gov. Obiano Signs A New Law (See Details)

Organising a burial ceremony in Anambra State has always been a great task to many families, due to the fact that a lot of families would always want to show off and make the ceremonies look classy and flashy, even if they are not financially capable. This has caused many to borrow or source the money for burials through illegal means.

But Governor Willie Obiano has put an end to all these by accenting to the new law regulating Burials in Anambra State, with the aim of ending expensive burial ceremonies in the state.

According to IgbereTV reports, the law which came into effect in the state on May 14 this year provide that all the communities in the state must have burial grounds, showed that all burial/funeral ceremonies of indigenous deceased persons must be registered with the town union at a fee of N1,500, while the erection of any billboard, banner or posters of any kind of deceased persons would attract N100,000 fine or six months jail term or both.

The only sign post permitted is directional post leading to the venue, which must not be erected before seven days to the burial date and must be removed not later than seven days after the burial date, otherwise, the offender would be liable to pay the fine.

The Commissioner for Lands was required by the law to create the state burial ground in every community where rejected corpses and unidentified corpses would be buried.

There would also be monitoring and implementation committees and members of the committees would be paid remuneration to be determined by the town union.

The law stipulates that the monitoring committee would be responsible for registering all deaths in the town, giving clearance for every burial/funeral ceremony, and submitting records of the implementation of the law to the Department of Town Union and Chieftaincy Matters in the state.

It was also stated that the corpse must not be deposited in the mortuary or any other place beyond two months from the date of death;

Also, there will be no blocking of road/street because of burial except with the approval of the appropriate local government authority; and no wake keep of any kind for any deceased person, while religious activity for the deceased person prior to the burial must end by 9:00 pm; and there must be no food, drink, life band or cultural entertainers during and after religious activity for the deceased person.

Also, all burial ceremonies must be for one day and the burial services must start not later than 9:00 am and must not last more than two hours, just as no preserved corpse must be exposed for more than 30 minutes from the time of exposition.

It also provides that all condolence visits after any burial ceremony, must not exceed one day and no person must give the deceased person’s family a condolence gift exceeding money for one jar of palm wine, one carton of beer and one crate of soft drink.

Regarding women, there must be no demand of more than N10000 by her maiden family, while wearing of special uniform is restricted to the immediate family of the deceased person and church groups.

Offenders of the new burial law will be tried by Magistrate courts in the state.

The cab operators who spoke through their Chairman, Comrade Samuel Ajogwu, also commended Gov. Ugwuanyi for his untiring efforts towards containing the spread of the virus in the state.

Describing Gov. Ugwuanyi as “our father who cares for his children”, Comrade Ajogwu said that it was heartwarming that “our dear Governor, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. …As ESHDC commends gov on 13km Abapka-Harmony Estate- Emene link road

IgbereTV reports that Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has directed the State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure and its contractors to immediately commence remedial works on all emerging potholes on roads in the state, in line with his administration’s sustained zero tolerance for potholes and commitment to maintenance of existing infrastructure.

The governor also directed the works and infrastructure ministry to commence procurement for the asphalt overlay of Agbani Road dual carriageway, from the Nigerian Police College, to Gariki in Enugu South Local Government Area.

In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Nnanyelugo Chidi Aroh, Gov. Ugwuanyi further directed the Enugu State Rural Electrification Board (REB) “to as a matter of urgency resume work on the repair and rehabilitation of all traffic lights in Enugu metropolis to ensure full functionality”.

This came as the General Manager/Chief Executive Officer of Enugu State Housing Development Corporation (ESHDC), Mr. Chukwuemelie Lambert Agu, commended Gov. Ugwuanyi for the construction and inauguration of the 13-kilometre Nike Lake Junction-Harmony Estate-Amorji Nike- Adoration Pilgrimage Centre –Orie Emene road, which cut across the thick forest of Umuchigbo community, in Enugu East Local Government Area, where one of the corporation’s biggest low cost housing estate is located.

The Commissioner for Information, Aroh, in his statement recalled that the State Executive Council (EXCO) had earlier approved the above repair works which were put on hold because of the outbreak of the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) Pandemic.

According to the commissioner, the governor instructed that all agencies and contractors involved in the execution of the listed projects should ensure strict compliance with the regulations and protocol as advised by the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), for the containment of the spread of COVID-19.

Speaking further on the Abakpa-Emene link road, ESHDC’s Chief Executive Officer disclosed that the road has opened up the Harmony Estate for rapid development.

Agu added that the socio-economic value of the estate has appreciated, stressing that “this is a welcome development towards our vision to provide and encourage proliferation of affordable housing for the people of Enugu State”.

He, therefore, called on the public, especially allottees in the Harmony Estate, to take advantage of the recent massive road project in the area, by the Enugu State government, to develop their property to encourage the governor’s sound vision for the state.

Governor Abiodun Describes Striking Doctors In Ogun State As Irresponsible

IgbereTV reports that Ogun State governor, Dapo Abiodun, has labelled striking doctors in Ogun State 'irresponsible' following their request for a wage increase.

IgbereTV recalls that resident doctors at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, Ogun State, had on May 22 announced a strike action over the way the state government had been handling the welfare of doctors.

In a video which trended online, Governor Dapo Abiodun condemned the strike action by the medical practitioners, saying they should be more concerned about people’s welfare than going after money.

He said, “I find it difficult to believe that when we are all putting our thinking caps on, trying to figure out what to do and how to do it, any set of people will be irresponsibly requesting for a wage increase. And these set of people are people that we have entrusted our health to at a point like this. I am very disappointed, I think, that is what I will say for now.

“I am beginning to wonder and it is being speculated that this may actually have political inclinations, these people may be politically sponsored. I am yet to believe it but at this point in time, anything is believable. If you see people who are educated, people who went to medical school, people who graduated, whose charge is to look after people, that is what they are charged for; that is what should be paramount to them not money, and we have done our best.

“I authorised the use of PPE to them, face mask and everything. I increased their hazard allowance by 300 per cent.”

…As traders hail Gov. Ugwuanyi

Sequel to further directive of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, the Enugu State Fire Service, on Saturday, commenced the decontamination and fumigation of Ogbete Main Market, Enugu, IgbereTV reports.

It would be recalled that the state fire service carried out the first phase of the exercise in the market on April 1, 2020, shortly after it was shut down by the state government as part of the proactive safety measures to contain the spread of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) in the state.

During the first phase of the decontamination of the market, monitored by Gov. Ugwuanyi and heads of security agencies in the state, the State Chief Fire Officer, Engr. Okwudiri Ohaa, hinted newsmen that “the state government will fumigate major markets in the state before they are reopened”.

Addressing newsmen during the second phase of the decontamination, at Ogbete Main Market, Engr. Ohaa disclosed that the exercise will last for two days (Saturday and Sunday).

He added that the state government has been consistent with the exercise to ensure that “the fight against COVID-19 is won in Enugu State”.

The Chief Fire Officer maintained that the decontamination is a continuous one, stressing that “when the market reopens, it will be a weekly event”.

He, therefore, advised residents of the state to continue to adhere strictly to all the precautionary measures for the containment of the spread of COVID-19, including the guidelines on personal hygiene protocol by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), among others.

Reacting on behalf of the traders of Ogbete Main Market, the market’s Chief Security Officer, Justus Kasie Ezebinagu, commended Gov. Ugwuanyi for the initiative to decontaminate the market for the second time.

He promised that the traders will comply strictly with the government’s precautionary measures as well as the WHO and NCDC laid down protocol.

His words: “When we were told that the governor directed the fire service to come and fumigate this Ogbete Main market, it was highly commended. The whole market was happy because this is the second time they are coming to fumigate the market since this pandemic started.

“We thank our amiable governor for coming to our aid. We are happy; even though Ogbete is partially open for now, we believe that our governor is going to do more in our collective interest”.

HealthConfirmed!!! Chief Imam In Kogi Tests Positive For COVID-19, Family Reveals by EBMedia(op): 4:40pm On May 30, 2020
IgbereTV reports that the Chief Imam of Kabba, Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Ejibunu, is positive for COVID-19.

According to IgbereTV reports, his family confirmed his positive status in a statement titled, “The COVID-19 Case Infection: Matters Arising

IgbereTV recalls that there has been a disagreement between Kogi State Government and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) over COVID-19 cases in Kogi. While NCDC insisted two cases were confirmed, the Government insisted the state is coronavirus-free.

But the family of Ejibunu told Kogi Government “to stop denying the obvious.” Chief Tai Ejibunu, Obatebise of Oweland, in a statement by the family, said the Chief Imam exhibited symptoms of COVID-19 because he eventually tested positive after referral from the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Lokoja.

In the statement, the family said, “Our attention has been drawn to the series of discussions going on concerning Covid-19 index case in Kabba and the identity of the index case.

“I wish to affirm, on behalf of Ejibunu family, that the Chief Imam of Kabba, Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Ejibunu, was down with flu some few days back and he had to be hospitalised at the Specialist Hospital in Kabba.

“Further medical attention was sought at the Federal Medical Centre in Lokoja, as the flu did not abate after some days.

“At the FMC, he was referred to the National Hospital in Abuja and the test conducted on him by the NCDC showed that he was Covid-19 positive.

“The test conducted on one of his sons who had been with him since came out negative.”

It also said: “The family would have come out to speak on the matter but we were not comfortable with the ding dong game going on between the NCDC and the Kogi State government.

“The family is concerned about the wellbeing of other and we wish to confirm that Covid-19 has found its way sadly into our community and the state.

“Therefore, no need for Kogi State government to deny the obvious.

“We would like to stress that the Chief Imam, of recent, had never ventured outside Kogi State by way of travelling outside the state. So, the ‘virus’ could have been contacted within.

We wish to advise our people to please abide by the protocols emplaced by the NCDC and play safe.

“The family is cooperating with the Kogi State government and the NCDC to stem the spread.

“This evening, contact tracing and testing of family members of the Chief Imam had begun.

“What we need from our people is empathy and no need for the acrimonious exchange of views and counter views.

“May God save Oweland and her people in particular and the state in general.”

EducationLagos To Employ 2,000 Primary School Teachers, Plans To Re-Open Schools by EBMedia(op): 6:54am On May 26, 2020
Lagos Govt To Employ 2,000 Primary School Teachers, As Govt Plans To Re-Open Schools

The Lagos State Government has made known its plan to employ 2,000 teachers in its public primary schools, IgbereTV reports.

The state Commissioner for Education, Folashade Adefisayo disclosed the plans or the recruitment during an online show, Covinspiration show, moderated by a United Nations (UN) Youth Ambassador, Dayo Isreal, while giving scorecard of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu led administration within the 360 days.

Adefisayo said the move to employ more teachers was aimed at the standard of public primary school education in the state.

She said that the pandemic has held the ministry of education back in the completion of its plans for the sector.

Adefisayo said, “The administration after assumption of office decided to address the challenges in education aggressively in 2020 but the pandemic which country’s index case happened in Lagos has halted various plans for education in the state.”

She said that administration went back to the drawing as soon as President Muhammadu Buhari lifted the lockdown earlier imposed on Lagos and other states so as to fast track completion of 2020 plans which includes recruitment of teachers.

Adefisayo said, "The most important aspect of learning is the quality of teachers and we did not have enough teachers to actualize the set plan for learning in our public schools."

“And one of the earliest things we requested for and was granted by the governor was the recruitment of teachers.

“We have concluded the recruitment of 1,000 secondary school teachers. And we are currently working on the recruitment of 2,000 teachers for public primary schools.

“And we are looking at employing teachers every quarter because the rate of retirement of teachers is very high in Lagos.

“The administration has granted the ministry permission to replace retired teachers.

“Aside from recruitment, we have sent a lot on the training of current teachers to improve their teaching skills in classrooms. And this COVID-19 period was the time when we were able to do a lot of things in the education sector of Lagos state,” she added.

Speaking on school reopening, Adefisayo explained that governor Sanwo-Olu does not have the authority to unilaterally give directive for the reopening of schools, saying, “Like other sectors already approved by the Federal Government to reopen, the state government is meeting with officials of the Federal Ministry of Education to design guidelines that must be adopted before the schools will be reopened.

“We are watching the behaviour of the pandemic to see what happens next and we are working with the Federal government on the reopening of the schools in the country as soon as possible.

“This is not a decision that any state can unilaterally take on its own. If we are certain that the children are safe, we will reopen the schools for learning to resume.

“We are already working with the Federal Ministry of Education and they are working with National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) on the guidelines that could be adopted when the need arises for the schools to reopen.

“After the protocol is completed and health officials assured us that the coast is clear, we will give the schools some days to adjust their premises in accordance with the guidelines on commencement of academic activities”.

According to IgbereTV, Governor Obiano made this known on Monday during a statewide COVID-19 broadcast at the Governor's Lodge, Amawbia.

While stating that the state COVID-19 task force headed by himself, will keep working to curb the spread of the virus in the state, he urged the hospitals in the state to create an isolation place where they can keep anyone whose test had been taken as a way of protecting them.

As at the time of this report, Anambra State has recorded a total of nine cases of COVID-19. Four of the cases are currently in the Protective Care Center. According to the governor, one of the cases was accompanying a corpse from Lagos to Imo State, after which his sample was captured for testing in Anambra. He has since returned to Lagos, and his whereabouts has been communicated to the appropriate authorities. Three of the cases have been discharged and one of the cases has passed on.
