IgbereTV reports that former Senate Chief Whip, Senator Roland Owie, has said that the North should produce the next president of Nigeria after President Buhari completes his second term in 2023. He proposed that power should be left to the North for at least another four years. He said that the South East Region should produce the president when it gets to the turn of the South. Owie made this known to IgbereTV while speaking to journalists in Benin. He said that the South has had more time at the presidency since 1999. He said he had advised against President Goodluck Jonathan contesting for president after the sudden death of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua which was not heeded. This he said resulted to the South having more time at the presidency than the North He advised that balancing of power will ensure equity, fairness and political stability in the country. He said, “The problem we have in Nigeria particularly those of us from the southern part is that we are sometimes not realistic and we forget that if we are going to equity, we must go with clean hands. “Presidency came from South West with Olusegun Obasanjo even though he lost his unit, he lost his booth, he lost his local government and lost the entire zone but he became President of Nigeria and did eight years even though he was trying to take a third term. Then the thing shifted to the North and produced Yar’Adua, one of the best presidents Nigeria has ever had – may his soul rest in peace. “The man who agreed that his election was flawed, and brought peace to Niger Delta died and the vice president took over. “You can see the wisdom of Abacha in his constitution that was not used where he made provision for a second vice president from the zone that produces the president. If we had adopted that constitution, it means when Yar’Adua died, the vice president from his zone would have taken over; we would not have been where we are today. “Yar’Adua died and Jonathan took over and finished the remaining years in the tenure and took another four years. If there were no greedy leaders, I knew what I said in our South South leaders meeting that Jonathan should allow somebody from the North run for the presidency, age is on his side and that when it rotates back to the South-South, he can still run but those who felt that they owned PDP, who were not there when PDP was formed, lured the man and pushed him to go for a third term. “Today, when you calculate after Buhari’s tenure expires in 2023, the North will have four years, 244 days to complete their own quota of the presidency. So, it is not turn of the South yet. When there is no justice, there can’t be peace. “So, the slot for 2023 is for the North and when the thing finishes, the presidency will come to the South and then should go to South-East”, Senator Owie said. Giving reason why the presidency should be ceded to the South-East when it rotates to the South the former Senate Chief Whip said: “It is the south easterners that are making this country remain united. Go to every part of the 36 states of the federation, after the indigenes, the next most populated group are the Igbo. When presidency comes back to the south, it should go to South East, not South West, not South-South. “However, the only thing we are going to talk about is that power should now return to the South after the next four years. So whichever party is fielding a candidate in 2023, that candidate must be willing and ready to sign that he will do four years and then the 244 days can be sorted out through a doctrine of necessity probably by compensating them with appointments”. According to Senator Owie, as far back as 1983, there was already plan that the presidency should go to the South-East after the second term of Alhaji Shehu Shagari before the military truncated the Second Republic. “Our second generation founding fathers, late Alex Ekweme and co, after all the hustle, finally agreed on the six zonal arrangement and the civilian regime started in 1999. Quite frankly, I was the Edo State coordinator for Ekweme ahead of the PDP presidential primaries. It was clear power was going to shift to the East because when Shagari came in 1979 and did four years and he came in 1983, it was not negotiable that by the time he finished his second term, the presidency will go to the South, and go to the South East and by all standard, everybody was looking up to late Ekweme that he would take that slot but unfortunately, the evil carriers, the military came and truncated that regime in 1984 and so all those plans could not materialise. ”A civilian regime again came in 1999 and it was clear that the thing will start from the South and for me, I supported that it would go to South East but at the end of the day, my mentor, a man I respect, President Ibrahim Babangida and some others thought otherwise. “When myself and late Chuba Okadigbo visited Ibrahim Babangida in the build up to that election, he made a veil reference about the presidency going to South West one night and I went back to him for clarification and he said yes, it had to go to South West. “He said: ‘Roland, it is not my fault, for me I need to equalise June 12; God knows my heart, the buck stops at my table, they say June 12 was annulled, I took responsibility but only God knows what happened; the underneath things that happened’; by the time he told me that, I pitied him,” Owie said. http://igberetvnews.com/1227562/sen-owie-turn-north-produce-president-2023/

Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu This is the type of life changing experience that one usually comes across either in the Bible or in fairytales, but I was a witness to this event, and I so testify… Chukwuebuka Asika was a struggling boy who finished secondary school, took JAMB twice without success and ended up a road sweeper, starting out to work cleaning the city streets as early as 5:00a.m every day. The only child of his parents has as passion singing and music, which he uses his spare time to practice. This frequently pitched him on a collision course with his father who felt he was wasting his time. He joined his church choir a few years ago, and mother luck shined on him recently on the day of the Festival of Nine Lessons at the Holy Ghost Cathedral, Enugu. He performed the ‘Largo Al Factorum’ from Rossini’s Opera The Barber of Seville. It was a powerful rendition. Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi who was a guest at the event was awestruck; So was the audience. The governor asked him right there and then… “Make a wish….” Chukwuebuka dreamt of owning a design house and a tailoring training institute. Instantly, Governor Ugwuanyi doled out a largesse, which had this poor guy shedding tears and rolling on the floor. He literally had to be straitjacketed or he would have injured himself. It was a tear-jerking moment for many of us present. Today, Chukwuebuka is actualising his dream, acquiring floor space, industrial machine and generator, and other equipment for his institute. When we tracked him down recently, he had this to say… “I am just a struggling boy from Atta, Ikeduru Local Government Area in Imo State. I love to sing. My parents never believed any good could come from this. I used to feel I disappointed them, being their only child, but I never gave up. Who will believe that a road sweeper like me will experience this good fortune from a stranger? I never got the chance to thank Governor Ugwuanyi for changing my life. I pray God to meet him at every point of his need as he has done for me”. At a function yesterday I reminded Governor Ugwuanyi of his act of benevolence which he had almost forgotten, and he simply said… “Ambassador, I was a child of poor parents, so I have walked a few miles in that boy’s shoes. Our fate in this life lies in the hands of God”. I start this New Year with saying Bravo to an exemplary and compassionate leader, a shepherd of dreams, a humble servant of his people, magnanimous to his predecessors; benevolent to his benefactors, a destiny changer. Again I say, may your shadow never grow Dim. To all struggling youth out there, never give up on your God-given talent. Patience and perseverance are the true conquerors of time…. • Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu is former Nigeria’s Ambassador to Spain and widow of Igbo leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu (Ezeigbo Gburugburu). http://igberetvnews.com/1227270/ugwuanyis-miracle-road-sweepers-destiny/

IgbereTV reports that a Nigerian man by name Obinna has opened up on how he makes a living by selling roasted corn in Dubai. In a post made available to IgbereTV reporters by Obinna, he said he is a citizen of Anambra state who moved to Dubai and after his efforts to hook a job failed, he decided to start selling roasted corn for a living. Mr. Obinna revealed how it all started. “My name is Obinna. I am from Njikoka in Anambra State, when I arrived in Dubai and couldn’t find a job, so I decided to think about what to do to make a living. One day, while I was in a local restaurant, a man came in and placed an order. When the waiter came with the order, it was Chicken With Mashed Potato and Grilled Corn but the corn was not roasted in the Nigerian way as we do it with coals. “That was when the idea came and I decided to give it a try. I contacted a local farmer who supplied me with raw corns and I started roasting them close to my neighbourhood across the street. “At first, people who passed by looked at me with curiosity as they had never seen anything of its kind up until one man approached me and I gave him one corn cob to taste. On eating it, he liked it and the following day, he came with 4 of his friends who bought and even took some home.” Now I’m making about 60 to 80 Dirham (22$USD)(N8,000) daily.”, he said. http://igberetvnews.com/1226423/wow-meet-nigerian-man-dubai-roasts-corn-living-photo/

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has received praises from the Kwara Progressives Group, KPG, IgbereTV reports. This came as a result move by the state government to recover a state-owned property which was formerly used by Olusola Saraki to the deceased father of ex-Senate President Bukola Saraki. Bukola Saraki had in a release he personally signed alleged Gov. AbdulRahman of seizing his late father, Second Republic senate leader, late Olusola Saraki’s property and moving to rename the State University named after the deceased ex-Second Republic Senate leader. Saraki wrote, “This action is clearly a manifestation of vengeance and it shows that this Governor is not out to serve any public purpose or pursue any development agenda. In his narrow-mindedness, he believes his victory at the polls is empowerment, entitlement and enablement to settle scores, provoke and pursue inter-family rivalry. In a statement KPG released, and signed by its Publicity Secretary, Mr Rotimi Sulyman, the group backed Gov. AbdulRahman’s action and called on him to pursue the matter to a logical conclusion. The statement read: “We read with dismay the tantrum thrown by ex-Senate President Bukola Saraki over the justice done by Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq on the issue of government property at Plots 1, 3 and 5 Ilofa Road in Ilorin, which was converted to personal use and appropriated by him and the late Senior Saraki. We take enormous pride in the governor’s action because it is for overriding public interest and the state must pull out all the stops to recover all its looted resources.http://igberetvnews.com/1215157/gov-razaq-receives-praises-recovering-state-owned-property-saraki/

IgbereTV reports that a Pan-Yoruba organisation, the National Association of Yoruba Descendants in North America, has urged the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari to shy away from arbitrary exercise of power as well as its selective obedience to law. The organisation also known as Egbe Omo Yoruba of North America, stated this while reacting to Tuesday’s directive ordering the release of former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki and Convener of #RevolutionNow movement, Omoyele Sowore, which it described as a right step in the right direction. The organisation had on Monday, December 16, issued a statement, demanding the immediate release of Sowore, Dasuki and others who have been granted bail by the court but still being held by the government. Less than 10 days after the statement from the group, the federal government through the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami ordered the release of the duo. In a statement signed by its National President, Durojaye Odimayo Akindutire, the organisation said, “though happy at this change of heart on the part of the Federal government of Nigeria, this is a token of what we are asking for. “This administration still has more to do in adhering to the tenets of true democracy and the rule of law. It is also instructive to know that Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky mentioned in our previous release is yet to be accommodated under this order of the Federal government.” It also advised the Buhari-led government to shy away from choosing which lawful order of the court to obey and ones to disobey, noting that, “When our laws don’t apply equally to all citizens, including elected and unelected officials, we are as nation are teetering on the brink of collapse. http://igberetvnews.com/1212260/sowore-dasuki-group-warns-buhari-shy-away-arbitrary-exercise-power/

Following the attack on Deji Adeyanju and other protesters in Abuja, on Monday, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has written a petition against President Muhammadu Buhari's Government, IgbereTV reports. IgbereTV reports that in the petition dated 24 December 2019, signed by SERAP deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare, and addressed to the UN Special Rapporteur, Mr. Clement Voule, SERAP urged Mr. Clement Voule to use his good office to see to the end of "the growing human rights violations and abuses in Nigeria and call on the authorities to end violent attacks on peaceful protesters; alleging that, “Nigerian authorities and police on Monday morning in Abuja failed to stop attacks on peaceful demonstrators by young men apparently armed with sticks and sharp objects. The police officers who were present did not intervene decisively to stop the attacks or arrest any attackers.” Read the full petition below: 24 December 2019 Mr. Clement Nyaletsossi Voule, Special Rapporteur on the right to peaceful assembly and association Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) Palais Wilson 52 rue des Pâquis CH-1201 Geneva, Switzerland Email: freeassembly@ohchr.org Re: Urgent appeal to request the Nigerian government to end violent attacks on peaceful protesters in Abuja, Nigeria Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) is sending you this urgent appeal to publicly express concerns about the growing human rights violations and abuses in Nigeria and to call on the Nigerian authorities to end violent attacks on peaceful protesters and to take urgent measures to respect and protect the rights of all Nigerians to protest anywhere in the country. We urge you to call on the Nigerian authorities to address the root causes of protests and end persistent disobedience of court orders and impunity of perpetrators in the country. SERAP is a non-profit, nonpartisan, legal and advocacy organization devoted to promoting transparency, accountability and respect for socio-economic rights in Nigeria. SERAP received the Wole Soyinka Anti-Corruption Defender Award in 2014, and was nominated for both the UN Civil Society Award and Ford Foundation’s Jubilee Transparency Award. SERAP serves as one of two Sub-Saharan African civil society representatives on the governing Committee of the UNCAC Coalition, a global anti-corruption network of over 380 civil society organizations (CSOs) in over 100 countries. Nigerian authorities and police yesterday morning in Abuja failed to stop attacks on demonstrators by young men apparently armed with sticks and sharp objects. According to our information, the police officers who were present did not intervene decisively to stop the attack or arrest any attackers. Deji Adeyanju, one of the protesters, was hospitalised after sustaining bruises on his left arm. Protesters were reportedly chased from the Secretariat of the National Human Rights Commission where they had gathered to deliver a petition to the commission. The attacks are coming on the heels of similar violent attacks on protesters demanding the release of prisoners of conscience in Abuja in November, and another apparently sponsored and coordinated attacks against Amnesty International’s office in Abuja in March 2017, following the launch of its human rights report on the military. The demonstrations have taken place against a backdrop of the failure by the Nigerian authorities to respect human rights, release prisoners of conscience including Omoyele Sowore, Olawale Bakare and Agba Jalingo, obey court orders and respect the rule of law. The government of President Muhammadu Buhari is responsible under the Nigerian Constitution and international law to protect the safety and rights of peaceful protesters and create an environment conducive to a diverse and pluralistic expression of ideas and dissent from government policy. Freedom of peaceful assembly is a fundamental right guaranteed under the Nigerian Constitution of 1999 (as amended) and regional and international human rights treaties including the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights to which Nigeria is a state party. SERAP is seriously concerned that the Nigerian authorities have so far failed and/or neglected to address or redress the attacks on peaceful protesters, despite growing calls on the authorities to investigate the attacks and bring perpetrators to justice. The failure to hold to account those responsible has continued to increase the vulnerability of protesters and activists in the country. The wave of protests against repression by both the Federal and State authorities illustrates a broken social contract between the authorities and Nigerians. The authorities have been failing to meet the demands of Nigerians to respect human rights end restrictions on civic space, obey court orders and ensure the rule of law. We therefore urge you to put pressure on the Nigerian authorities to take all feasible measures to protect peaceful protesters demanding the release of all prisoners of conscience, and full respect for the rule of law. We urge you to put pressure on the Nigerian authorities to immediately and thoroughly investigate the attacks, identify the perpetrators and ensure the prosecution of anyone found to be responsible for the violent attacks. We urge you to put pressure on the Nigerian authorities to make clear that they will not tolerate violent attacks on protesters. The authorities have a responsibility both to respect the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and to protect protesters from violent attack. We would be happy to provide further information or to discuss any of these human rights issues in more detail with you. Please accept the expression of our highest consideration. Yours sincerely, Kolawole Oluwadare Deputy Director CC: Ms Michelle Bachelet High Commissioner for Human Rights Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) Email: InfoDesk@ohchr.org http://igberetvnews.com/1208494/serap-petitions-buharis-govt-un-violent-attacks-deji-others/

IgbereTV reports that the Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr Gbolahan Lawal has revealed that the 32,000-metric-tonnes Imota rice mill of the Lagos State government would be completed in June 2020. Mr Gbolahan Lawal, revealed this on Monday during an inspection visit to the rice mill at Imota, Ikorodu, Lagos State. He said: “The socio-economic importance of the mill is very significant to Lagos State. “Considering the number of people that are consuming rice in the state, we realise the need for the quick completion of the mill. “We are happy with the level of development and after the completion, I see jobs created. “About 250,000 jobs will be created. The investment and the initiative of this administration is to ensure that this project is completed on time." "As a government, we have demonstrated that we have the capacity to complete this mill. “The mill is expected to produce 2.4 million 50kg bags of rice and the cost benefits is very significant,’’ he said. Lawal who stated that the mill would create employment especially for the Youths in the departments of Production, Bagging, Transportation and Distribution also commended Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu for investing more in the project. Also on her own part, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Agriculture, Ms. Abisola Onasanya, said the team was at the site to monitor progress made so far on the project. Onasanya who noted that work has been ongoing on the site, in the last four weeks, promised that the team will continue to meet with all contractors at the mill site fortnightly. She said, “We come here on a monthly basis to see what we have discussed in our meetings and to ensure that contractors are actually keeping to the time." Mr. Sola Okeleye, General Project Manager, CIBA Construction Limited, said the rice to be produced in the mill would be polished, single colour and stone-free after going through all the stages of production. Also, one of the contractors, Henry Ossai, Managing Director, HenryKarl Construction Limited, promised that his company would work assiduously to deliver before the date of delivery. Ossai who earlier had a slow down at work due to some equipment trapped at the seaport said the problem has been resolved and work has continued. He said: “But now, the equipment has started coming into sight. We are working day and night to make sure we meet up with the target. Right now, there is no importation of rice, which means this mill is going to serve a lot of purposes, create jobs and opportunities for the state. We want the mill to run; we want people to be employed and we are 100 per cent committed to the completion at the right time." http://igberetvnews.com/1208079/imota-rice-mill-will-ready-june-2020-lagos-state-govt/

Former Chairman, defunct Pension Reform Task Team (PRTM), Abdulrasheed Maina and his son, Faisal, are to remain in Kuje Correctional Centre, Abuja, till January 2020, IgbereTV reports. Justice Okon Abang, who gave the order, on Wednesday, adjourned hearing on Abdulrasheed’s bail variation application till Jan. 13, 2020 while Faisal’s trial continuation was adjourned till Jan. 20, 2020. Earlier on Wednesday, Justice Abang had said that though it would not be convenient for the court to take trial, bail variation arguments would be taken. EFCC’s counsel, Mohammed Abubakar, however, said he was ready for trial continuation and that the next witness was in court. On his part, Abdulrasheed’s lawyer, Mohammed Monguno, reminded the court of the pending application filed on Dec. 6 for bail variation. Abubakar therefore urged the court to adjourn hearing on the bail variation application because the defence had just served on him its further affidavit the same day. “We apply that the hearing be adjourned to enable us react to their further affidavit,” he said. Monguno, who described the motion as “simple application,” said the call for the adjournment was to delay proceeding. “We were the ones who filed further affidavit in response to their counter affidavit. “We urge Your Lordship not to grant their prayer because it is an attempt to delay this matter,” he said. Deborah Apete, Counsel to Maina’s company, Common Input Investment Limited, adopted the submission of Monguno, saying “the motion is ripe for hearing.” Abubakar, in his argument, said that Maina’s application was brought relevant to provision of ACJA and 1999 constitution. He, however, said that there was no provision in ACJA or the constitution that precludes ones from filing further counter-affidavit in reaction to further affidavit filed by the applicant. “What the first defendant filed was a further and better affidavit. “Section 36 of 1999 Constitution affords us the right to file further counter-affidavit,” he said. Abubakar said Maina’s application was filed on Dec. 17 but they deliberately served him Dec. 18 in order to deny EFCC the right to fair hearing by way of responding to the further and better affidavit. “We urge Your Lordship to discountenance the learned senior counsel’s plea,” he added. Ruling, Justice Abang acknowledged that he had already signified intention to take the application. He, however, said that there was no provision of ACJA stopping the prosecution from filing further counter-affidavit. “What is fair is fair in both civil and criminal proceeding. “I think the law allows the prosecution to file a further counter-affidavit,” citing Denis Amadi and Ozor Mbachi 2016 case in which the Court of Appeal overruled his decision.
