Enugu Govt Approves Over N2.5 Billion For Developmental Projects

…As Gov. Ugwuanyi hands over five modern fire fighting trucks to state fire service

In continuation with its renewed efforts to provide more critical infrastructure in the state, the administration of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, has approved the execution of development projects worth over N2.5 billion.

According to IgbereTV reports, the Commissioner for Information, Nnanyelugo Chidi spoke to newsmen after the meeting of the State Executive Council (EXCO). Nnanyelugo Chidi Aroh, disclosed that the Council approved the construction of access and internal road networks at Golf Estate Annex, at Ngwuagu Amaezike, Abor, in Udi Local Government Area of the state, at the cost of N2,082,131,025.35.

Aroh who briefed the journalists, alongside the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Greg Nnaji and their Finance and Economic Development counterpart, Mrs. Adaonah kene-Uyanwune, added that the council also approved the construction/rehabilitation of Manuwa Street, GRA, Enugu and Agbalaenyi junction-Enugu-Onitsha Expressway link road at Oji River LGA, at the cost of N200,414,307.00.

The information commissioner stated that the council approved the construction of 24-unit of one-bedroom flats at old Government Lodge, Enugu, at the cost of N137,500,915.00, to serve as a support facility for the ongoing 10-unit guest houses, nearing completion.

Equally approved by the council were the construction of high double cell box culvert and drainage work at Umuchigbo Nike, Enugu East LGA and fencing of the forest reserve, adjacent to Michael Okpara Square, Enugu, now known as Unity Park.

The park, which will serve as a tourist attraction as well as a place for relaxation and recreation, is currently witnessing massive beautification with works of art, construction of artificial water pond and a monumental roaring lion of about 30ft high and 60ft length, among others.

Aroh stated that the council also approved the construction of a Chapel of Worship at the Government House, Enugu and the immediate purchase of five (5) rapid intervention vehicles in keeping with the state government’s commitment to protect lives and property of people of the state.

He explained that the customized intervention vehicles with emergency rescue facilities will be purchased directly from John Holt Nig. Plc, to tackle fire, health and accident emergency challenges in the state “in line with the state government’s sustained commitment to provide for the safety of Enugu people.

“These come in small trucks and are very important because they make shorter runs, get quicker to emergency scenes and more difficult places”, Aroh said.

The commissioner further disclosed that the intervention vehicles will complement the five fire fighting trucks procured earlier by Gov. Ugwuanyi’s administration for the five newly constructed fire service stations across the state, which were formally handed over to the state fire service by the governor, on Thursday.

Other Council approvals, were the purchase of 1000KVA generator for ESUT Teaching Hospital, Parklane, Enugu, and the approval of the report of the joint committee for the negotiation of consequential adjustment for payment of N30,000 Minimum Wage for state civil servants, which the Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development, Mrs. Uyanwune and the state leadership of Organized Labour, said was a product of collective bargaining, based on the economic indices of the state.

In his submission, the works and infrastructure commissioner, Engr. Nnaji, assured that his ministry will utilize the construction weather window available to actualize the approved project in record time.

PoliticsIgbos Group Orders Abaribe To Resign And Apologise For Speaking Against Buhari by EBMedia(op): 8:03am On Jan 30, 2020
A foremost socio-political movement in the southeast, Igbos in Nigeria Movement (INM) has disassociated itself from the lawmaker representing Abia-South Senatorial District, Enyinnaya Abaribe, after call for President Muhammadu Buhari to resign from office.

According to IgbereTV reports, on Wednesday at a press conference in Awka, Anambra State, the Igbo group asked the 64-year-old senator to resign and apologise to Nigerians for speaking against President Muhammadu Buhari.

In a statement jointly signed by Mazi Ifeanyi Igwe and Paulinus Ozoani, its President and Secretary General respectively, the Igbos in Nigeria Movement expressed utter disappointment and disapproval of Mr Abaribe's utterances.

Read full address below:

The Igbo in Nigeria Movement is disappointed by the decision of the Senator representing Abia-South Senatorial District, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, to abuse the sacred mandate of his constituents with his call for President Muhammadu Buhari’s resignation over the security challenges the country is grappling with.

Senator Abaribe’s tirade against the president, for that was all he did, is nothing but a cheap grandstanding by a man who is desperate for political rehabilitation after his stature was diminished by his decision to hobnob with terrorist leaders, Nnamdi Kanu.

It is disingenuous of the supposedly distinguished Senator to pretend that President Buhari’s administration did not successfully chase terrorists from major cities leaving them to only operate from beyond Nigeria’s borders with the incursions they make into Nigeria’s territory.

We also challenge Senator Abaribe to deny that the other security breaches like kidnapping and banditry are not connected with the activities of his co-travellers in the opposition, who sponsor such criminality in order to create the impression that Mr. President is not delivering on his promise to keep Nigeria secured.

Our expectation was that Senator Abaribe would have used the time allotted to him in debating the motion tagged, ‘Nigerian security challenges: urgent need to restructure, review and reorganize the current security architecture’ by Senator Abdullahi Yahaya, in a better manner. He should have for instance called on his party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to cease fire in the war of attrition they are waging against Nigeria.

It is on record that while waging this war on behalf of his party, Senator Abaribe is a major contributor to the insecurity in the country through the sponsorship and arming of the designated terrorist Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) group in the south east for many years. He demonstrated his deep connection with the group when he stood surety for its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu who had put the country on fire of unimaginable proportion.

He even went as far as using his office, alongside fellow terrorist sympathizers, refused to grant approval for Mr. President to secure the loan needed for the purchase of arms and ammunition to fight remnants of the terrorists.

Of course, they had expected that the terrorists would have decimated Nigeria by now not knowing that the Nigerian military will rise to the challenge.

The Igbos in Nigeria Movement decided to take Senator Abaribe to task so that his misguided position will not be misconstrued by patriotic Nigerians to be the collective decision of the south-east geo-political zone or that of the Igbo nation.

We shall never align with what is criminal or evil, so it becomes necessary to disown this trader masquerading as the people’s representative in the Senate.

We consequently demand that Senator Abaribe resigns from the Senate since he has proven himself to be a misfit who is not qualified to speak on the floor of the Senate. In addition to resigning, he should apologize to Nigerians for his unnecessary tantrum.

PoliticsJUST IN!! Ugwuanyi: Enugu Becomes 1st State to Thrive Without Fed Allocation by EBMedia(op):
Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State says his administration can thrive without revenues from the Federal Allocations, IgbereTV reports.

He said that the state could thrive because the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of the state had improved.

Ugwuanyi said this on Tuesday in Enugu during the launch and public presentation of the Revised Enugu State Business Agenda (SBA), an initiative of the Enugu Coalition of Business and Professional Association (ECOBPA).

The governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Simon Ortuanya, said that his administration had implemented reforms to increase the state IGR.

The governor said that the narrative of the state as a core civil service domain had been changed to include a state that was renowned for business.

He said that the state was only behind Lagos State in IGR, adding that the administration had blocked all revenue leakages.

“Our state is currently the only one in the country that can survive without Federal Allocations. We pay our workers and pensioners as and when due,” he said.

Ugwuanyi said that he had the desire to make investors comfortable in the state by providing the enabling environment.

On incidences of multiple taxation, the governor said the state government had addressed it.

He however, said that the state government was not unmindful of some touts that go about extorting money from business owners, adding that such people do not have the mandate to do that.

He said that the state government had a unified accounting system with a central revenue account.

Ugwuanyi said that the administration had taken the security of lives and property to the next level to ensure that businesses thrived.

Presenting the policy brief, the Consultant, Centre for International Private Enterprises (CIPE), Mr Mathew Kalu, said that there was great need for economic reforms in the state.

Kalu, who decried the high rate of IGR and rent in the state, said that revenue generation needed not to be at the expense of businesses.

The consultant said that the issue had impugned on the development and growth of businesses in the state.

He said that granted that the state had made progress in the World Bank Index of Ease of Doing Business, a lot still needed to be done.

He called for the adoption of a business agenda for important reforms.

“There should be an institutionalised system or forum where the public and private sector players will dialogue and look at issues that are negatively affecting businesses,” Kalu said.

Earlier, the Chairman of ECOBPA, Mr Emeka Udeze, said that the organisation comprised of over 30 different businesses and professional bodies.

Udeze said that the commitment of the association was to partner with the state government to create the enabling environment for businesses to thrive.

The chairman, who is also the President, Enugu Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (ECCIMA) said that the maiden edition of the SBA dealt with eight priority issues that were affecting businesses in the state.

He said that it was gratifying to note that three of such issues had recorded some levels of improvement since the discourse.

“Interestingly, the 2018 World Bank Ease of Doing Business Report ranked Enugu State the second best in the country.

“There is no doubt that the implementation of the recommendations of this revised SBA would expand the state’s economy by attracting more investors,”Udeze said.

PoliticsUgwuanyi Charges ENSIEC On Credible LG Elections by EBMedia(op): 7:05am On Jan 21, 2020
Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has charged the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) to conduct credible, free and fair Chairmanship and Councillorship elections across the seventeen (17) local government councils and 260 electoral wards in the state.

Gov. Ugwuanyi, who spoke when he swore in four new ENSIEC Electoral Commissioners in the state, following their nomination and subsequent confirmation by the State House of Assembly, stated that the call for credible elections was consistent with his administration’s tradition of transparency, equity and fairness.

The four newly sworn in Electoral Commissioners, who now fill the vacuum hitherto created in the Commission, are Mr. Solomon Ifechukwu Ude, Mrs. Anthonia Chinenyenwa Ogbu, Hon. Mrs. Theresa Egbo and Dr. Mrs. Bernadine Ezugwu.

Gov. Ugwuanyi disclosed that pursuant to section 3, subsection 2, of the ENSIEC Law 2000, “the Commission shall consist of a Chief Electoral Commissioner, who shall be the Chairman and seven (7) other members to be known as Electoral Commissioners whereas section 11, subsection 4, provides that the quorum for meetings of the Commission shall be five (5)”.

The governor further disclosed that the vacuum in the membership of the state electoral body was created following the death of Chief David O. Ngene, resignations of Hon. Samuel Okechukwu Ngene and Hon. Mrs. Jane Chinwendu Eneh who got elected to the State Assembly and Engr. Dr. MaryRose Obiageli Abba, who got appointed as his Special Adviser, respectively.

He added that the depletion in the ENSIEC membership made it impossible for the electoral body to form the needed quorum for a properly constituted meeting, disclosing that with the new members who were sworn in, “as we just witnessed, the Commission is now properly constituted and ready for the forthcoming Local Government elections, amongst its other related functions”.

Gov. Ugwuanyi, who also swore in Barr. Chris Onyema Ezugwu as his Special Adviser, congratulated them for their new appointments wishing them God’s guidance in the discharge of their duties.

Responding on behalf of others, Dr. Mrs. Ezugwu, thanked God and expressed gratitude to the governor for finding them worthy to serve the state.

Noting that their responsibilities are “very challenging”, require firm character, dedication and commitment, the new Electoral Commissioner assured the governor that they will put in their best to ensure credible electoral in the state.

IgbereTV reports that a Ugandan Imam, Sheikh Mohammed Mutumba of Kyampisi Masjid Noor mosque in Kayunga District tied the knot with his ‘wife’ Ms Swabullah Nabukeera two weeks ago after they met in the same mosque.

But the couple which had not had any sexual intercourse before marriage also spent two weeks of their marriage, without enjoying conjugal rights as the “bride” claimed she was in her menstruation periods.

Mr Mutumba said after his wife claimed to be in her menses, he became patient and waited for her to get better.

However, Nabukeera’s luck ran out after Mr Mutumba’s neighbour claimed that his newly wedded wife had jumped over a wall and stole their television set and clothes.

Mr Mutumba rents a two-roomed house where they had been staying with Nabukeera. However, the wall that separates the two rental rooms did not reach the iron sheets.

The neighbor reported the case at Kayunga Police Station before detectives were dispatched to arrest Ms Nabukeera.

“It was when he was been searched by a female officer that the suspect had stacked clothes in the bra to hoodwink that they were breasts. On further search, we discovered that the suspect had male genitals,” said Mugera.

During interrogations, Nabukeera revealed that his real name is Richard Tumushabe and that he duped Mutumba so as to get his money. He was charged with impersonation, theft and obtaining goods by false pretence.

Nuuru Nabukeera, Tumushabe’s alleged aunt, was also arrested and admitted that Mutumba had paid dowry including two goats, two bags of sugar, a carton of salt and a Koran.

She claimed that she did not know her ‘niece’ was male as she got to know him when he was already an adult.

PoliticsGowon: FG Should Restructure The Country To Avoid Another Civil War by EBMedia(op): 7:14am On Jan 14, 2020
Former Nigeria Head Of State, General Yakubu Gowon has advised the Federal Government to restructure the country to avert another civil war, IgbereTV reports.

General Yakubu Gowon (rtd.), who ruled between 1966 and 1975 spoke at a conference organised by Nzuko Umunna and Ndigbo Lagos, in collaboration with civil society organisations in Lagos, to mark 50 years of the end of the civil war in Nigeria with the theme, ‘Never Again: Nigerian Civil War: 50 Years After’.

Gowon, who was the head of state during the period of the war, maintained that at that time, war was inevitable.

Gowon, who was represented at the occasion, emphasised that despite the end of civil war 50 years ago, it still remained a reference point in the country’s political discourse.

He noted that the war posed the greatest threat to the territorial integrity and unity of Nigeria and its promising multi-ethnic federation.

He stressed the importance of creating enabling platforms for dialogue on how the country’s citizens could live together in peace and harmony, as Nigeria cannot survive another civil war.

He declared that it was only in a peaceful atmosphere that Nigeria could witness stability in its politics, economy, security, and development in all spheres, and called on all and sundry to ensure the country averted another civil war.

He said, “Our commitment to Nigeria must be total and patriotic. To me, our Nigeria of today of over 500 ethnic groups of diverse socio-cultural and religious colourations and spread across 774 local government areas and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is worthy of your support and defence."

In his remarks, Sen. Banji Akintoye, the co-chairman of the event, expressed the fears that the current mood among Nigerians was similar to that of 1966 when the war broke out, stressing that the nation’s affairs were being unfairly managed by a section of the country.

He said: “There seems to be an agenda being pursued to establish this minority in all positions of command in the executive, administrative, judicial, and security services of our country."

“The voices of the minority register protests continually and are continually disrespected and ignored."

“The state of our law is patently being submerged to the needs of that agenda, with seriously damaging effects on human rights."

“These situations are inevitably fostering, among the peoples of the Middle Belt and South of our country, the feeling that they are being reduced to the status of conquered people in Nigeria.”

CrimeTragedy!!! Pastor Murders Wife, Commits Suicide In Front Of Congregation by EBMedia(op): 8:05am On Jan 07, 2020
IgbereTV reports that members of Ground for God’s Gospel Church in Mombasa, Kenya were left in shock when Elijah Misiko, who is the assistant pastor at the Ground for God’s Gospel Church in Mombasa, left his seat at the front row, approached his wife, Ann Mughoi, a senior pastor, on the pulpit and stabbed her with one of the knives “he’d hidden in an envelope”.

Julius Kiragu, Mombasa sub-county police commander, confirmed the crime saying they found a 17-page suicide note on Misiko where he accused his wife of changing ownership of the church to her name, despite being founded by both of them.

“He walked up to his wife while the church was praying as if he wanted to whisper something to her,” Kiragu said.

“Then he took one of the knives and stabbed her two times. He believed she was dead. He then stabbed himself three times in the stomach and slit his throat.”

Misiko was said to have died instantly from his stab wounds while his wife died at a local hospital a few hours later.

The police also revealed that the deceased have had serious disagreement lately over the ownership and leadership of the church.

The couple who reportedly have four children together were said to have been living apart since the dispute started.

In 2017, Misiko was reportedly detained by the police in Mombasa after his wife alleged that he planned to kill her but was released the following day after the force said they found the accusations untrue.

“She had been trying to stay away from the husband since the dispute over the ownership of the church began,” Kiragu said.

“They had even reported the matter to church leaders but they were unable to resolve the dispute.”

PoliticsUmahi Is Still A Full Member Of PDP – Chairman by EBMedia(op): 6:40pm On Jan 06, 2020
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has debunked the report that Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, is planning to decamp to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Some news media had reported that the governor told some media organizations that he belongs to both parties.

In a statement which was made available to IgbereTV on Monday, the Chairman of PDP in Ebonyi State, Mr. Onyekachi Nwebonyi, dismissed the claim, saying Umahi is still a bonafide member of the party.

He said: “The story is a blatant falsehood aimed at tarnishing the image of the governor and as well derailing him from his focus.”

“It is mischievous to twist comments made by the leader in order to curry favour and deceive the general public.

“The governor has severally admonished politicians to be 100 percent dedicated to whichever political party they belonged to. He had said that if he is in APC, he would be 100 percent there and not playing double standard or jumping here and there every time.

“There is however no way he could turn back to say that he is in APC when he advises PDP members not to romance with the APC. He has severally threatened severe consequences for those who are caught in anti-party activities. Such a person cannot turn overnight to do that what he cautions others against.”

Foreign AffairsDanger!!! Iran Abandons Nuclear Restriction Agreement It Had With The US by EBMedia(op): 8:20am On Jan 06, 2020
IgbereTV reports that on Sunday, Iran declared that it would no longer follow the agreement reached with the US to abide by any of the restrictions imposed by the 2015 nuclear deal.

According to IgbereTV reports, the government said it would no longer observe limitations on its capacity for enrichment, the level of enrichment, the stock of enriched material, or research and development.

The statement came after a meeting of the Iranian cabinet in Tehran.

This comes amid tensions after the killing of the top Iranian General, Qasem Soleimani, by the United States in Baghdad.

Under the 2015 accord, Iran agreed to limit its sensitive nuclear activities and allow in international inspectors in return for the lifting of crippling economic sanctions.

US President Donald Trump abandoned it in 2018, saying he wanted to force Iran to negotiate a new deal that would place indefinite curbs on its nuclear programme and also halt its development of ballistic missiles.

Iran refused and has since been gradually rolling back its commitments under the agreement.
