Events / Eulogy To Late Mrs. Emem Peace John Ahmodu From Edet Edem Akpan by edet19892015(m): 8:59am On Nov 04, 2022
Death Has Dealt With Us

Sister Peace, I should be writing about your birthday and your marriage anniversary not eulogy. This is very painful to us, I have find it difficult to deal with, that it is real you are gone.

The news of your untimely death left me in tears and devastation, who would wish you death? A good and peaceful woman, NYSC connected us, you were so happy when I arrived at Tender Hearts College Idah, and your joy knows no bounds when I told you I am from Ibiono Ibom, because you are from Ibiono Ibom too. I remember you said I now have a brother and someone I will speak Ibibio language with.

Sister Peace you never failed me in Idah, you played a good role of a big sister, when I told you I hardly eat breakfast Sister you came through for me. You make sure that you provided it for me and when allawee is delayed to come by Sister you always came through for me. And I ask again WHO WOULD WANT YOU DEAD?
Your advice and guidance saw me through out my national service year.

Death is wicked and heartless, death has no pity, no sympathy and death doesn't think twice before it strikes.
Death has no pity towards your three lovely kids.
Death has no pity towards your darling husband.
Death has no pity towards your parents and your siblings and death has no pity towards us your friends and acquaintances.

Sister, I wish we have super powers we would bring you back, we didn't bargain for this, we wish you are still alive with us.
To your husband, I say be strong Mr. John be strong for the kids because automatically you are now dad and mom to them. My prayers will always be with you, the Almighty God who does things according to His will, will give you the strength and resources to take care of this children and He will always be there for you.

Sister, I didn't know my conversation with you over the phone on 22nd September, 2022 will be the last, that is why since 21st of October 2022 when the shocking news of your death came to me I keep listening to Bob Marley "No Woman No Cry" the lyrics got me when it says "The good people we meet and good friends we have, good friends we've lost along the way,
In this great future, you can't forget your past so dry your tears, I say."

Everything is going to be alright when we all get to heaven a place where there will be no death, no suffering, no pains, no sorrow and no hatred and blood shed.
At this point, Sister Rest In Peace and know that your memories will be ever green in our hearts and I have immortalised you in my heart.

Is this how you answer exam questions in school?

I simply asked why the tradition demands the Oba to have many wives. Being a traditional demand means there are consequences for disobedience. My question is what are those consequences?

What is the consequence of an Oba not having many wives? Even if he must have many wives, aren't two or three wives enough?

I am not condemning him having many wives. I simply wish to know what will happen to him or his throne if he fails to have many wives, especially if he he fails to have more than 3 wives.

If you don't have the answer, rest. What you wrote is not senseless but it doesn't address the issue at hand.

Nothing will happen to him...

Permit and demand do not have same meaning. The post says, "demand". I am not asking about what the tradition permits. I am asking about what the tradition demands. In other words, I am asking why the tradition demands the Oba to have many wives.
My understanding of the marriage concept as it applies to the typical palace in Yorubaland is that marriage to a monarch is fundamentally different from marriage to ordinary mortals. Let’s start from the very idea of the divine nature of kings: Ekeji Orisa-Friend of the gods. This characteristic alone already indicates that no woman can expect to have equal status with a Yoruba monarch. That you are married to a spirit does not make you a spirit even though it grants you special privileges. Those privileges end where that of the monarch begins.

But the awe with which our kings were viewed may have less to do that this more or less superstitious conception of their nature and more to do with the traditions they uphold, the way they comport themselves, the sheer scarcity of their royal presence. You can’t be seeing a god every day on cable TV. A god is not and cannot be a social media sensation. Imagine a god with a social media handle? I think that the social media handle should be that of the Palace. When gods descend from their heavenly abode to interact with ordinary humans virtually on a daily basis, humans, by their nature, begin to see them as just normal people.

Familiarity breeds contempt.
Culturally, a king does not go about “toasting” women to become his wives. There are distinguished personages who understand the traditional process of acquiring wives for a monarch. Take note: wives. It is not culturally acceptable for a true monarch in Yorubaland to have one wife. That creates the danger of a competing power base. The wife can become a virtual opposition to the king. She becomes entangled in Palace politics not just as an important factor, but as potential competition to the ekeji orisa. If care is not taken, she is capable of organising a Palace coup to eliminate the king in extreme situations.
To avoid this unpalatable scenario, and also because a king requires many trusted wives to carry out a wide-ranging set of duties, he is encouraged, if not mandated, to take as many wives as possible. This diffuses the alternative power base and allows the king his peace.

When you are one of 15 or 20 wives competing for the attention of the ekeji orisa, the thought of ever challenging his royal authority will never occur to you. You are busy trying to please him, give him a child, cook for him, run his errands, prove your loyalty and when you have grown kids, protect and care for them.

The phenomenon of a “mono wife” who is celebrated on social media and decorated with the appurtenances of royalty which significance she may not even understand is alien to our culture and creates all kinds of problems. The biggest of those problems is that it opens up the monarch to constant competition from a woman whose understanding of marriage to a monarch lacks traditional depth. She is “one” Just like her husband, ( She is his “partner”. She can call the shots. Oh, maybe she also has his Prince in her grasp. Omo kekere o mo oogun, o npe ni efo…Okunrin kan bi igba.
Would this happen if there were a dozen pregnancies queueing up at the royal maternity?
I know I will be accused of male chauvinism. But mind you I am not preaching this lifestyle to regular folks. I am saying this is how our monarchs lived and thrived. And just if you make the mistake of thinking this is just a male thing, then please go read the story of Queen Amina of Zaria. Queen Amina took male companions the way the old Kings took wives, by royal command. And when she had exhausted them with her insurmountable libido, they were despatched to the nether regions. No man would walk away boasting of his exploits in Queen Amina’s oza room! So after all, it’s not just a man’s thing.

The long and short message of this homily this morning is simple: If your kinsmen are preparing to make you a king, don’t go there and start preaching the Christian ethos of one man one wife. The institution you are about to lead does not believe in that injunction. It has a different conception of marriage.

What is your problem? Did I say the tradition should stop? Did I say he is not free to have many wives?

The post says his tradition demands him to have many wives, I simply ask why the tradition is so. I want to learn about the tradition.

If you know the answer, tell me. If you don't know the answer, don't try to change the topic.

The Ooni explained that he tried making some changes but he couldn’t. Maybe referring to his decision to keep to only one queen and have concubines, the monarch said of the traditional heritage of Ile Ife, “This institution is bigger than me, beyond me. People in this palace are more than 800, they are close to a thousand. There are some people who have been living in this palace for more than 60 years, while some have lived here for more than 80 years old. Some people are over 100 years old in this palace.

If I had my way, I tried to challenge it but it blew in my face but thank God I’m still alive. It’s an institution that is rich in heritage, culture, and tradition.”

Nairaland / General / Coaching And Mentoring By Edet Edem Akpan by edet19892015(m): 2:38pm On Oct 23, 2022
The photo below shows United States of America athlete Anita Alvarez as she sank slowly to the bottom of the pool at the world championships in Budapest recently her coach, Andrea Fuentes, scanned the pool deck and made a split second decision, she dived in to save her.

This photo should remind us of the importance of coaching and mentoring, this coach had the ability to recognize when Anita was under longer than she normally could.

This coach had the desire to help, this coach had the willingness to save and this coach acted while others were still watching on the sideline.

We have too many young folks drowning right before us especially at work, school, home, community and church.
We watch as many walk away and unfortunately, some even taking their own lives due to the pressure that comes from navigating life's challenges.

Every Aristotle needs Alexander and every Alexander needs Aristotle.
If you are a young person that doesn’t have a mentor, find one now.
If you are a seasoned veteran and don’t have a mentee, find one now. There is no excuse for anyone to drown.

NYSC / What Edet Edem Akpan Told His Students On His POP Day by edet19892015(m): 11:16pm On Oct 19, 2022
1. Perspective is everything. Where your thoughts lead, your life will go.

2. It’s not about you. Nothing ever is.

3. Establish your own measures of success. Do this early on, and never look back.

4. Find courage in purpose and ideas, not some abstraction like “inside yourself.” Purpose can be courageous even when you’re afraid.

5. Use the wisdom around you. Learn to find wisdom everywhere. In nature, in music, in mistakes, in the quiet.

6. Pick your battles.

7. No one hates reading. You’re probably just a very picky reader. Most people walk into a bookstore surrounded by thousands of books, and may be deeply interested in only a few dozen. That’s normal. Find those few dozen.

8. Learn to laugh at yourself.

9. Surround yourself with inspiring people and ideas.

10. If you don’t like something about your life, change it. Nothing is worse than letting yourself down.

11. Leave things better than you found them.

12. Be brutally honest with yourself.

13. Question everything.

14. Having integrity means doing the right thing when no one is looking.

15. Think globally, act locally.

16. Digital citizenship is human citizenship. If we’re going be super-philosophical about things, your life isn’t yours, it’s everyone’s.

17. Trust yourself.

18. Your work and your life don’t have to be “separate.” Your “work” doesn’t necessarily mean a career, and definitely doesn’t mean “job.” Your work is your daily interaction with the world. Choose carefully.

19. Know who in your life to go to for what.

20. Talk less, listen more.

21. Happiness isn’t what you think it is. You’ve been taught by Nollywood and social convention that jobs, money, marriage, and always-on entertainment are the goals of life. But true happiness comes from, among other sources, a sense of alignment–of volition and agency. Freedom. Artistry. Craftsmanship. Connecting. Living out what you believe.
It may work out differently for you–and that’s the point. It’s different for everyone.

22. Every now and then start your thinking over. Reset your perspective. You’ll never really be able to do this, but try. All the crap you’ve been internalizing for all of these years you’ve done so without experience—and you’re likely to take those cognitive biases and emotional prejudices out with you into the early stages of your adult life.

23. Don’t do what your teachers and parents have told you to do. They love you, but they can’t possibly understand the complexity of your life and hopes and thoughts and dreams and fears, and will try to anyway, unwittingly projecting their own insecurities and aspirations on you. And when you follow it, your life will be an underwhelming, room temperature, sticky wet noodle. It’s your life, and thus your work.

24. Decide what is “good work” for you, and resist the urge to socialize it to get everyone’s approval. While the product of your work may ultimately be public, your own moment-to-moment interaction with that work is life, and is fiercely private. Every night when the lights go out and we’re all ultimately alone, those well-intentioned people that love you are somewhere being forced to confront their own work, and their own insecurities, hopes, frustrations, and dreams. And you with yours.

25. Prioritize endlessly. It’s not always easy to see that X will cause Y. As things change, don’t be afraid to let go of things that no longer fit.

26. Admit when you’re wrong.

27. I’m your teacher for life. If you ever need me, find me.

28. Don’t oversimplify what’s complex; don’t over-think what’s simple.

29. Try to align your behavior with your belief system and not the other way around.

30. Thank You.

Nairaland / General / Giving Is An Investment Written By Edet Edem Akpan by edet19892015(m): 7:42pm On Oct 16, 2022
Giving is an investment, therefore a giver usually has a return on his or her investment.

I read a story on the Internet sometimes ago about a farmer who went to his mango farm for inspection, fortunately he saw only one big ripe mango fruit, he plucked it and returned home with it, he gave it to his daughter and the daughter gives it to the mother, and she gave it back to him and the farmer shared the big mango fruit among themselves.

On the 9th of July, 2022 I visited a wine shop I usually buy wine from with my uncle who came into Uyo from Calabar, actually I wasn't there to buy wine but my uncle wanted a wine shop that sells assorted wines. So I took him there and he bought wines worth ₦150000.00K and the shop manager was so pleased with me and she gave me St. Lauren Fruit Wine a product of GrandOak Limited, in appreciation for bringing someone to buy with such amount and that was the first sales for the day.

I always crave for St. Lauren Fruit Wine, so I kept it for my birthday so I can drink it on that day, unfortunately I didn't celebrate my birthday so I didn't drink it, the wine was still in my refrigerator. My friend invited me for his school advanced studies inaugural ceremony and I didn't have money to give him so I gave him St. Lauren Fruit Wine. However I graced the occasion and thereafter he did a little reception for his guests so he brought the St. Lauren Fruit Wine and shared with us, so I had a sip from it.

When giving him the wine I lost hope that I won't drink from it but it wasn't so because giving is an investment and it will definitely return.
I encourage you to give, don't just give but give a good gift so that when it returns to you it will come in good measure.
Scripture admonish us to "Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.”

NYSC / Impact Of COVID-19 Pandemic During Edet Edem Akpan National Service Year by edet19892015(m): 4:40pm On Oct 15, 2022
Today 15th of October, 2022 makes it two years since I passed out from the National Youth Service Corps. It may interest you to know that I served during the outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19) and it impacted my National Service Positively and Negatively.

COVID-19 affected the global social, political, academic, economy and financial markets. It leads to significant reductions in income, lose of jobs, a rise in unemployment, and disruptions in the transportation, service, and manufacturing industries.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, technologies played a crucial role in keeping our society functional in a time of lockdowns and quarantines, most things were done virtually and in the process of physical activity social and physical distance method were used.
The following are ten technology trends during COVID-19 pandemic:

1. Online Shopping and Robot Deliveries: COVID-19 has transformed online shopping from a nice-to-have to a must-have around the world.

2. Digital and Contactless Payments: cash might carry the virus, so banks implemented various measures to ensure banknotes are clean before they go into circulation.

3. Remote Work: Many companies have asked employees to work from home. Remote work is enabled by technologies including virtual private networks (VPNs), voice over internet protocols (VoIPs), virtual meetings, cloud technology, work collaboration tools and even facial recognition technologies that enable a person to appear before a virtual background to preserve the privacy of the home. In addition to preventing the spread of viruses, remote work also saves commute time and provides more flexibility.

4. Distance Learning: As of mid-April 2020, 191 countries implemented schools closures, impacting 1.57 billion students. Many educational institutions started offering courses online to ensure education was not disrupted by quarantine measures.

5. Telehealth

Telehealth were effective way to contain the spread of COVID-19 while still providing essential primary care. Wearable personal IoT devices can track vital signs. Chatbots can make initial diagnoses based on symptoms identified by patients.

6. Online Entertainment: Although quarantine measures have reduced in-person interactions significantly, human creativity has brought the party online. Cloud raves and online streaming of concerts have gain traction around the world. Chinese film production companies also released films online. Museums and international heritage sites offer virtual tours. There has also been a surge of online gaming traffic since the outbreak.

7. Supply Chain 4.0: The COVID-19 pandemic has created disruptions to the global supply chain. With distancing and quarantine orders, some factories are completely shut down. While demand for food and personal protective equipment soar, some countries have implemented different levels of export bans on those items. Heavy reliance on paper-based records, a lack of visibility on data and lack of diversity and flexibility have made existing supply chain system vulnerable to any pandemic.
Core technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, such as Big Data, cloud computing, Internet-of-Things (“IoT”) and blockchain are building a more resilient supply chain management system for the future by enhancing the accuracy of data and encouraging data sharing.

8. 3D Printing: 3D printing technology has been deployed to mitigate shocks to the supply chain and export bans on personal protective equipment. 3D printing offers flexibility in production: the same printer can produce different products based on different design files and materials, and simple parts can be made onsite quickly without requiring a lengthy procurement process and a long wait for the shipment to arrive.
However, massive production using 3D printing faces a few obstacles. First, there may be intellectual property issues involved in producing parts that are protected by patent. Second, production of certain goods, such as surgical masks, is subject to regulatory approvals, which can take a long time to obtain. Other unsolved issues include how design files should be protected under patent regimes, the place of origin and impact on trade volumes and product liability associated with 3D printed products.

9. Robotics and Drones: COVID-19 makes the world realize how heavily we rely on human interactions to make things work. Labor intensive businesses, such as retail, food, manufacturing and logistics are the worst hit.
COVID-19 provided a strong push to rollout the usage of robots and research on robotics. In recent weeks, robots have been used to disinfect areas and to deliver food to those in quarantine. Drones have walked dogs and delivered items.
While there are some reports that predict many manufacturing jobs will be replaced by robots in the future, at the same time, new jobs will be created in the process. Policies must be in place to provide sufficient training and social welfare to the labour force to embrace the change.

10. 5G and Information and Communications Technology (ICT): All the aforementioned technology trends rely on a stable, high-speed and affordable internet. While 5G has demonstrated its importance in remote monitoring and healthcare consultation, the rollout of 5G is delayed in Europe at the time when the technology may be needed the most. The adoption of 5G will increase the cost of compatible devices and the cost of data plans. Addressing these issues to ensure inclusive access to internet will continue to be a challenge as the 5G network expands globally.

COVID-19 has demonstrated the importance of digital readiness, which allows business and life to continue as usual as much as possible during pandemics. Building the necessary infrastructure to support a digitized world and stay current in the latest technology will be essential for any business or country to remain competitive in a post-COVID-19 world, as well as take a human-centred and inclusive approach to technology governance.

BBC reported that 200 million people lose their jobs due to COVID-19. And the financial burden often falls on the most vulnerable in society. Digitization and pandemics have accelerated changes to jobs available to humans. How to mitigate the impact on the larger workforce and the most vulnerable is the issue across all industries and countries that deserves not only attention but also a timely and human-centred solution.

Nairaland / General / Success Doesn't Know Your Age Written By Edet Edem Akpan by edet19892015(m): 6:09pm On Oct 10, 2022
I heard about Harland David Sanders who was also known as Colonel Sanders in a seminar I attended few years ago, I found his personality interesting so I began to dig deep about his history.

I learnt so many from the life and time of Colonel Harland David Sanders who was the founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) so, like this Colonel Sanders spent half of his life, doing many odd jobs for a living, failing to achieve anything significant in his life.
Colonel Sanders failed to stay in one particular job for an extended period of time; as a result he was always on the search for a new job.
He understood that instead of randomly switching careers which would lead him to nowhere, settling in a single career would be more beneficial.

Colonel Sanders was 62 years old when he founded KFC.
He was born on September 9, 1890 and founded KFC on 24 September 1952, this means at the time of founding KFC he was 62 years, 0 months and 15 days old.

Colonel Sanders’s history is very inspiring.
From a very young age, he did many odd jobs but wasn’t happy with them.
Later in life, Colonel Sanders decided to work on his passion of cooking chicken.
This passion inspired him to found KFC and make it hugely successful.
Eventually, as his recipes grew in popularity, many travellers used to regularly visit his service station to taste his yummy food.
Colonel Sanders became well-known for his steak and country ham meals.
And as his small eatery failed to accommodate the ever increasing customers, he decided to open his own restaurant.
So in 1936, Colonel Sanders bought a large piece of land in the nearby area and built a restaurant with all his savings.
And during these times, he also did an eight week hotel management course from Cornell University, to run his business more efficiently.
In this restaurant, Colonel Sanders served many new dishes which also included his legendary fried chicken dish.

Colonel Sanders wasn't a real colonel because he never worked in the military.
The Governor of Kentucky, Ruby Laffoon liked his chicken, so he bestowed him the honor of a colonel.

I like to encourage you that success doesn't know your age, I so much like this lyric from the Nigerian popular female musician Teni "Uyo Meyo" which says "Everybody is born a winner, if only you just believe, don't you worry about a thing, cause if you work hard you can get it if you want, if you strive hard you can be just what you want.
If you work hard you can climb the mountain top cause nothing is too small
and nothing is too big.
Don't let them tell you, you can't
And they won't help you just so you know
Just keep on pushing."

At the age when many people retire from work, Colonel Sanders went on to become an entrepreneur and eventually succeeded to become one, thus inspiring millions of people.
His success story affirms that you are never too old to achieve success in your life.

This story also proves that you can be successful at any age, provided you possess the qualities like persistence, determination and passion towards your work.
Now, KFC is one of the biggest and most successful global brands, all thanks to the relentless determination and persistence of Colonel Sanders.

I believe you are motivated by this piece.

Culture / Edet Edem Akpan Celebrating Igbo's Culture On His 2022 Birthday by edet19892015(m): 1:08am On Sep 29, 2022
This year's birthday I am celebrating igbo's culture and heritage, according to Wikipedia Ọmenala ndị Igbo are the customs, practices and traditions of the Igbo people of Eastern Nigeria. It consists of ancient practices as well as new concepts added into the Igbo culture either by cultural evolution or by outside influence. These customs and traditions include the Igbo people's visual art, music and dance forms, as well as their attire, cuisine and language dialects.

Modern Igbo traditional attire is generally made up, for men, of the Isiagu top which resembles the African Dashiki. Isiagu or Ishi agu is usually patterned with lions heads embroidered over the clothing, It can also be plain, usually black. It is worn with trousers and can be worn with either a traditional title holders hat a fez named okpu agu or agwu, or with the traditional Igbo stripped men's hat which resembles the Bobble hat. For women, an embodied puffed sleeve blouse influenced by European attire along with two wrappers usually modern Hollandis material and a head scarf are worn.

Abacha is my favourite Igbo delicacy and the first state I visited in Igbo Land is Enugu State.
My Igbo name is Ikemefuna and self acclaimed Igbo chieftaincy title is Ichie Ifechukwude. I love Igbo people because they are friendly and industrious.
Igbo Kwenu! Kwenu Kwezo Nu!

Happy Birthday!
Ikemefuna Elite Edet Edem Akpan
