BusinessRe: FG To Ban Foreign Goods That Have Local Substitutes by edicolove: 2:23pm On Jul 18, 2012
Seun: This is bad Economics. Most foreign goods and services have local substitutes:
- European Premier League (Nigerian Premier League)
- Calculators (Locally printed 4 figure tables)
- Guns used by the police and Army (locally made bows and arrows, cutlass)
- Wheat Flour (Garri & Cassava Flour)
- Peak/Dano Milk (Cowbell & Jago Powders)
- Aeroplanes (locally-made Canoes and Innoson Bus)
- Laptops by Apple, HP, Dell (expensive locally assembled laptops with inferior specs).
- Facebook (Nairaland)
- Google (Nairaland Search)

If you were actually to ban all foreign goods with local substitutes, you'd be banning just about everything Nigerians need and love. Nigerians will be miserable. It's madness. It's not even politically feasible. If the government pursues such a policy, the end result is that the government will end up banning goods that are produced locally by the friends of the people in government. Political donors, basically. This short-sighted policy is a recipe for institutionalizing crony capitalism.
As much as you have a right to your opinion, I am completely disappointed that this is coming from you. This is the single most important stategy that was used by the Asian tigers to revamp their economies. China push it almost to the extreme and we all praised them for it. Now you are against it for Nigeria and you want transformation. I am really really suprised. I would have expected you to talk about how the strategy will be pursued intelligently, but your outright condemnation is strange

Eziachi: Its funny when I read your above quoted, I thought you were being sarcastic, until I start to read you other posts afterwards.
Being a supporter of a Nigeria politician must really be tough for anyone that possesses a measure of conscience, because after reading the full content of the thread and many other Jonathan's presidential blunders after another in both utterances and deed, wouldn't your first reaction be:
God! how do I defend this one now? Can't he keep his gob sealed for one day, just a week after his Mrs perm sec debacle?

But trust you guys, you always manage to find a way around it, really clever bunch! in ironic way.
I don't know how you guys does it but you manage to do it anyway. I salute.
Exactly what part of the statement is a blunder and how do you define a blunder? From where I stand, you are the one trying to define it as a blunder because you hate him. Every neutral would consider what he said a fact and in order.

I will let you know this. If PDP goes burst, the nation goes with it. The error many of these ACN folks make is that they think PDP is in the name. It isnt in the name. PDP is just a platform for Nigerians to come together accross the country. In 1979 it was NPN, in 1960s. it was NCNC (though not as broad as it is today). The point is, Nigerians must always look for a common ground to come together and that common ground must

1. Not be controlled by one person
2. Not be controlled completely by one region
3. Must be able to accomodate different ideologies because thats the reality on the ground.

It doesnt matter what the name of that party is. Whether you call it PDP or DPD or PDD, it doesnt matter. It is the consensus across board that will matter. ACN and CPC dont have those qualities. No hausa man will trust a party that is dominated by Tinubu. No south south or south east man will trust a party that is dominated by Tinubu and moslems or Buhari and muslims. It is the reality on the ground. It doesnt matter what many of these south west peeps are posting here on Nairaland. Edo people did not vote for Oshiomole because he is in ACN. If he moves to any party today, they will al move with him, including PDP. His open credit to GEJ for the elections shows that. He was Jonathan's biggest defender during the fuel subsidy debate. Rochas is PDP thru and thru and went to APGA and unseated Ohakim. If the people of Imo state had considered is closeness to PDP, they would have rejected him. They voted for him because of who he is and their distaste for Ohakim, not because of APGA.

PDP is the only party you will find in many states of Nigeria. States like Cross River, Ebonyi, Abia, Nasarrawa, Kebbi, etc have practically no presence of ACN. Others have no presence of CPC. Jonathan was spot on in his statement. The ACN supporters here call it a gaffe because they want to paint everything he says as such. But he is very correct. If the PDP was like ACN or CPC, they would have brought down the federal might on the opposition just like ACN is doing in Lagos and the country would have plunged into a war. The goal of boko aram is for the military to take over because they believe they have a stake in a military government in Nigeria but even they are making a big mistake. The Nigerian military is not what it used to be.

Nigerian bomb blast hits army barracks during New Year celebrations

State TV reports that bomb attack in Abuja has left 30 dead, but police spokesmen cites four dead and 13 injured

Air marshal Oluseyi Petirin, the Nigerian air force’s top official, told journalists he thought that the bomb was placed where 'people are relaxing because of the new year'. Photograph: AP
A bomb exploded at a beer garden this evening at a Nigerian army barracks where revellers had gathered to celebrate New Year's Eve, witnesses said, and state-run television reported that 30 people died, though police immediately disputed that.

A local police spokesman said the blast occurred at about 7:30pm in Abuja, the capital of Africa's most populous nation.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the explosion in this oil-rich nation where citizens remain uneasy after bombings at other locations had killed dozens of people several days earlier.

"It's unfortunate that some people planted a bomb where people are relaxing because of the new year," air marshal Oluseyi Petirin told journalists. "Nobody has been able to give accurate figures (of casualties), but we have rescued some people." An anchor on the state-run Nigerian Television Authority gave a death toll of 30 to viewers this evening. The channel did not give an estimate on the number of injured.

Local police spokesman Jimoh Moshood immediately disputed the figure, saying only four people had died and 13 were wounded. Death tolls remain contentious in Nigeria, as politicians often inflate or shrink tolls to suit their aspirations.

The blasts come days after a similar attack struck a nation that remains uneasily divided between Christians and Muslims. On Christmas Eve, three bombs exploded in the central Nigerian city of Jos, killing dozens of people. That area has seen more than 500 die in religious and ethnic violence last year.

Members of a radical Muslim sect attacked two churches in the northern city of Maiduguri the same night, killing at least six people.

The sect, known locally as Boko Haram, later claimed responsibility for both attacks in an internet message. Police say they are still investigating those attacks.

Nigeria, an OPEC-member nation, remains a vital supplier of easily refined crude oil to the US. Unrest in the West African nation has affected oil prices in the past. Beyond that, western diplomats are concerned that ethnic, religious and political violence could undermine the nation of 150 million people just as it adjusts to democracy after years of military dictatorships and coups.

This conglomerate of ACN and CPC supporters on NL are beginning to sound like broken record. They really think people viewing this thread will not see thru their hypocrisy and partisanship. Lol. Twisting every GEJ comment to make it look bad and insulting him on every turn is beginning to have the effect I prophesied it would have. It is beginning to divide the country along hard coded lines with the north east and west getting isolated daily and south west split in 2. And I like it sweetly.

As usual, this band of used BB curve 2 peeps sponsored by Tinubu and El Rufai completely shied away from the thread where Oshiomole gave full credit to GEJ for the free and fair elections in Edo state. They almost freaked out when they saw that topic on the front page. Lol

Let them keep insulting GEJ. That's what their paymasters paid them to do but I feel sorry for them because posterity will come down hard on them and they won't have anywhere to hide. Lol
PoliticsRe: Oshiomole Gives GEJ Credit For Edo's Free & Fair Election! by edicolove: 8:36pm On Jul 17, 2012
Now tell me which party is the rigging party. ACN conducted a sham election in Lagos state. They disgracefully rigged the results of Badagry, Alimosho, Ikorodu and Lekki. Now GEJ is showing them how it should be done. The Edo state PDP is messed up because of Anenih. The next move will be to kick him out and Oshiomole should take over. Then the south south will come under one umbrella and tackle the Nigerian question. The New alliance should be South east, north central, south south. Let's see how it will pan out. The SS and part of SE has the oil and the north central has the food. If the SW like, they can join their boko brothers. Lol. But I know the SW will always be split in 2. One half are the boko sympathisers. But whatever happens, Nigeria will never be the same again and we will never allow anyone to dominate, oppress or maginalise us again, ever.

mikolo80: WHY DONT THEY SELL SHARES OF NEPA TO THE PUBLIC.SAME FOR ALL OTHER ENTITIES UP FOR PRIVATIZATION
If you sell shares to the public, is it the public that will raise the massive funds required to run these companies? Is it the public that will develope the expertise required to get the companies rolling? These are emergency projects that are required to hit the ground running. If 3 years after privatization, things are still trying to pick up, people like you will say the whole thing was scam from the begining. You need credible companies with the resources and expertise to hit the ground running and create instant impact. These companies can decide to go public on their own.
PoliticsRe: PHCN To Commence Privatization Next Week by edicolove: 1:04pm On Jul 14, 2012
Paentera: If this happens, it'll mean the management of NEPA is insincere. The recently jacked up maintenance fee/tax from N75 to N500 collected on at least 1 million prepaid meters should fetch the government a minimum of N500million monthly or N6billion annually. I am sure this should give the management a very viable means to pay living wages to their staff. And I am sure there're more than 1million prepaid meters deployed presently. That means NEPA should have enough funds at their disposal to run the organisation to make it a profitable one.
My problem with many of you is that you are lazy. You just sit in front of your computers and critisize. You dont contribute anything. I have been following this whole stuff online and to be fair on Bart Nnaji, he has been really engaging. But we need more people follwoing these stuff up and airing their views. Here is the NERC BB PIN: 28F1B6C5, Twitter handle is @NERCNG.

Dont just critisize, engage them and push them. If you use the same energy you spend here to critisize GEJ to push these guys, things will move faster and they will sit up. Dont just go and pay the stup1d bills they give you.Insist on PAYG. The meters are available. The regional offices are hoarding it because they make money from the current system. Bart Nnaji cannot go around every street. Report anyone you suspect to him or to NERC.

P.S The mini companies have names of their own already.
Are we just arguing for arguments sake or what? You are repeating the same thing and not following the original post.

The English is clear. "Companies from the unbundling of PHCN". Would you have prefered he list all their names instead? Even some people still call it NEPA verbally, just to get some people to understand what they are refering to. He never said the companies are called PHCN. He said the companies from the unbundling of PHCN. six generation companies, 11 distribution companies and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). The bid for the take-over of the 17 successor companies from the unbundling of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) will open next week.

This was disclosed by the Minister of Power, Professor Barth Nnaji during an interview with Channels Television on Friday.

According to Prof. Nnaji, the federal government will next week also sign a Memorandum of Understanding with Canada-based Manitoba Hydro International Limited for the management of the Transmission Company of Nigeria.

The restructuring of the PHCN saw the emergence of 18 successor companies – six generation, one transmission and 11 distribution companies.
PHCN was only referenced, not used as their name. I guess the writer didnt want to start naming all the 17 companies. And I dont think they even have a name. I think the bid winners will name them. They are just refered to according to what the do for now i think.

But the average benin man still have Osho engraved in their mind cos unlike lucky, Osho is actually seeking to rectify the dilapidated infrastructures Lucky left behind after 8 years of doing absolutely nothing.

But the Osho hype too plenty . . .If you no blow ya trumpet . .Who will grin
Like I said in my other post, I still prefer Oshio to the PDP guy. My ideal candidate would have been Osunbor. He started all the roads that Oshio has finished. Akpakpava, Sapele, etc. Many of my friends in Benin will not be going to vote because they are angry with Oshiomole but they can't vote for the PDP guy because he doesn't look credible. So they will prefer to stay at home.

What really gives Oshiomole the advantage is the point you made above. That is, compared to Lucky, he looks wonderful. Oshiomole will always look good as long as he is compared to lucky because lucky is probably the worst governor Nigeria has seen tille date. Even Orji will look good when compared to lucky. But evaluating Oshiomole on his own is something different. The guy even chased out all the people that were with him in ACN and went thru the court case with him. Most of the people in his cabinent and campaign train now are the same people that messed up edo state under Lucky's rule. The same former PDP thieves are now his main pals. Politics is a dirty game man. It is what it is.
PoliticsRe: Edo Gubernatorial Election - Live Updates by edicolove: 9:55am On Jul 14, 2012
It is peaceful so far but I pity edo state. They are going the same path with the ACN states. So much propaganda. Oshio has only completed ring road, akpakpava, ekewan and sapele roads since 4 yrs. All the other roads are rubbish. Terrible hold up moving inside benin everyday. Benin has one of the best network of roads in Nigeria, but the government has not taking advantage of that. Airport road has become a conduit to syphone money. Oshiomole has been doing airport road for 4 yrs now and no headway. The only thing he has done I like is the mass transit just like brt. Several schools have been renovated but there are no teachers. Oshiomole has pursued many of the teachers. Edo state has many good government schools with good structures because they were built by the missionaries. I am not really impressed by what is on the groud. I have been hearing that he is doing well and I was praising him as well but arriving here, its all wash. Nothing near what is happening in places like Imo, Enugu, Akwa Ibom. Oshiomole was even trying to deduct 30percent tax from workers but they resisted him.

But I think he will win because PDP brought out a useless candidate. If they had brought out a credible person like Osunbor, it would have been difficult for Oshiomole. But PDP are trying to play the ethnic card and it is what will make them loose

You are an id1ot if you think you are talking to a teenager like you. There is nothing in google search for mosques destroyed by BH. You think you can play that card here. Terrorist agent and informer like you.

Kobojunkie: Stop lying!! Boko haram has destroyed mosques as well. Majority of those the group have killed to date remain muslims, even as they continue to declare war against Christians.
Exactly which mosques did they destroy? Lets see who is lying here? Please can we have the names and locations of the mosques? If you cant produce it, then you are a lying scum and a boko aram spokesperson!
