Plans have been announced of the increment of fares on all routes of the Lagos State Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) scheme, an operator with Primero Transport Services said. The company’s Managing Director, Mr Fola Tinubu, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ikorodu on Thursday. Tinubu said that the increase, which will take effect from February was as result of its increasing operational cost. The company has maintained a fare of N75, N120, and N195 from Ikorodu to Mile 12, Fadeyi, and CMS, respectively, since it started operations in November 2015. According to him, the company will introduce new fares which will take effect between the end of February and early March. Tinubu said: “we are going to increase our price because of the situation in the country, our cost has just gone through the roof. “At this time last year, we bought 1.2 million litres of diesel monthly at N120 per litre, we are now buying at N260; tyres that cost N70,000 each now go for N140,000. “All the parts used for the buses are imported so they’ve all doubled or tripled in price; and we have no choice but to continue to buy them. “So, in doing that we have to find a way to make it work because you all know that the buses were bought in China; so, we have a foreign dollar component in our debt portfolio. “When we bought the buses it was N168 to a US dollar and now we are talking of N470 and we still have to pay the dollar component back. “So, our debt has increased and our cost of operation has gone through the roof, and we have managed to keep the pricing same for now. “In fact, right now, we are subsidising every person we carry, and if you are running a business, you can only do that for so long.’’ He said though the company was aware of its social responsibility, but the increase in fares was inevitable if its bus services were to be kept on a sustainable footing. “The airlines have increased their between 200 per cent and 300 per cent but we will not even do 100 per cent. “So, it is going to be something manageable for people. I will try not to put a figure to that now because the governor still has to approve it, and I don’t want to preempt him. “What I can say is that it’s going to be a marginal increase and not a drastic increase and still less than what the commercial bus operators are charging right now. “We are not even going to be close to that; but there is no other solution to it because if we do not, it is going to be recipe for disaster down the road,’’ Tinubu, said. NAN reports that operators of the yellow-painted commercial bus currently charge N150, N200, and N350 from Ikorodu to Mile 12, Fadeyi, and CMS, respectively. On the issue of delays caused during drivers changeover, Tinubu said the company had introduced the Early Riser System to check the menace. “We send a total of 75 buses out at 4.30 so that when majority of the busmen are changing over the early risers are still on the wheels. “As time goes on, we may increase to 100 buses so that that way it would completely eliminate 1.30 p.m – 2.30 p.m delay issue. http://www.newshelm.com/2017/01/brt-introduces-new-transport-fares.html

Chairman of Transcorp Group and United Bank for Africa, UBA, Mr Tony Elumelu, has said Nigeria’s power sector will soon collapse if urgent action was not taken. Elumelu told CNBC Africa: “The agency of government that is responsible for making sure that this sector delivers on its potential is not doing well enough. We are owed a lot of money. “Transcorp Power Holdings is owed almost N50 billion. When we put in the invoice for this month, we should be owed almost N54 billion or N55 billion. How do you survive in business like this, how? Other GenCos I know are actually dying. “We are struggling because of our diversified resource base, what of others? Something urgent and drastic must be done. It is as urgent as yesterday. The truth is that Transcorp Power, as a key operator in the sector, is struggling. And if we are struggling, you can imagine what others are going through.”He went on to ask the government to allow it generate its own gas, adding: “Where we are located, we are sitting on a lot of gas.” http://www.newshelm.com/2017/01/nigerian-power-sector-may-soon-collapse.html cc lalasticlala

Lagosians who want to purchase the government's Lake Rice, which costs N12,000 per 50kg bag, are complaining bitterly. The news of Lake rice's arrival had been greeted with cheers but when sales began on Thursday, the cheers turned to complaints. Instead of finding relief in the scheme like they had expected, many people in fact had their problems compounded while trying to access the product. The frustration is mounting. Here are accounts of three residents who were frustrated trying to get the product: Kelechi Ukatu, from Ori-Okuta, Ikorodu said: “In my life, I have never suffered the way I did on Thursday,” “I left my house very early that morning to go to Farm Service Centre in Odogunyan where the LAKE Rice was to be sold for interested buyers living around Ikorodu. Of course by the time I got there around 10:00am, I met more than 200 people who had already registered and gone to pay in the bank. By the time it was my turn to register my name; I was the 700th person for that day alone. “While I was still there, waiting to get a teller to go and pay in the bank, the 200 people who had already paid were asked to wait for their payments to be confirmed at the state secretariat at Alausa before they would be given their rice. Many of them waited for hours and later left the place angrily after some of the officials asked them to check back the next day. “A lot of people also left in frustration after waiting several hours just to get a teller to go and pay in the bank. I left the place by 1:00pm without recording any success. On Friday morning, I went back to check, the situation was worse, I had to give up. I am just pained that I wasted that much time waiting in a queue for something that won’t even get to me. If not for God, I could have fainted in the midst of that suffering,” she said, fuming with rage. Mr. Ayodele Bamgbose, another Ikorodu resident said: “It is a good thing that the Lagos State Government came up with this idea of selling bags of rice for N12, 000 each but their good intention has turned to a huge disappointment for many of us who cannot even get to buy the product even after visiting the Odogunyan centre for two days. “Apart from the large number of people at the place, the process one is subjected to before he or she can purchase just one bag is not fair. In fact, if you are not healthy, you could faint in the process. “How can people wait in the queue for more than two hours just to register and be given tellers to go and pay in the bank? Even by the time you pay and come back, they tell you they have to confirm if your payment has reflected in the server in Alausa. This is madness to me; it does not make sense in any way,” he said. “How can they ask us to provide our LASRA cards just because we want to purchase rice?” Bunmi Ogunleye, a hairdresser, asked angrily. “It is not as if it’s a document that every resident of Lagos has yet, so I don’t know why that should be used as a condition to purchase the LAKE Rice. I left the centre I visited because the idea did not make any sense to me,” she said. There were similar tales of frustration and disappointment in many of the sales points across most local government areas of Lagos between Thursday and Friday. For many, the exercise had not lived up to their expectations especially with the criteria adopted to select beneficiaries. http://www.newshelm.com/2016/12/lagosians-complain-bitterly-about-lake.html

The onslaught on in-traffic robbers by the operatives of Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command is yielding results with the arrest of five robbery suspects in different parts of the metropolis. The suspects were apprehended during a special raid by the RRS operatives on robbers who were attacking and dispossessing members of the public of their valuables in traffic. The suspects, Oyeleke Abdullah (24), Olajide Dipo (17), Saheed Alayande (17), Azeez Yusuph (21) and Oyeniwa Wasiu (18) were nabbed in Victoria Island, Ojodu Berger, Oshodi, Obalende and Ilubirin around the state. RRS investigator revealed that before the arrest, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, had directed the RRS Commander to deploy more operatives to Ojodu Berger, Lekki and Oshodi in order to ensure ‘Ember’ month free crime. It was gathered that some operatives of the RRS’s Decoy Team, in arresting one of the suspects, Azeez Yusuph, pretended to have had a broken down car under the Ilubirin Bridge around 4:23 a.m. “It was very early in the morning when an undercover policeman pretended as if his vehicle broke down on the bridge while some of his colleagues hid somewhere to ambush the robbers who would come and harass the lone occupant of the vehicle…. The suspect showed up few minutes trying to collect handset and money from him, that was when we arrested him,” the source said. He hinted that the operatives also got complaints from members of the public on RRS social media platforms about the activities of miscreants on road users with broken down vehicle in Ilubirin. Abdullahi confessed to interrogators “I was trying to make ends meet by snatching valuables of stranded drivers on the bridge,” adding that he sleeps underneath the bridge along with his colleagues. In his confessional statement to interrogators, another suspect, Oyeleke Abdullah, a danfo driver revealed, “I snatched a Zeltel phone from a passenger around 9:00 p.m. on Saturday…. There was traffic entering Lagos on Saturday at Berger, I decided to use that opportunity to snatch handset and other valuables from commuters. My colleague and I do this whenever we need money.” Another suspect, Saheed Alayande, who was arrested in Oshodi disclosed that he was a bus conductor in Oshodi. “Whenever I am not doing that, I carry load and wares for people with my friend. It was here that I stole the phone that I was caught with before I was arrested.” Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Dolapo Badmos, said that the Command was on high alert to curb social miscreants who exploit traffic situations in the metropolis to dispossess Lagosians of their valuables on the road. The suspects have been transferred to State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yaba, for further investigation. http://www.newshelm.com/2016/12/photo-rrs-nabs-five-in-traffic-robbers.html

Nigeria's Minister of Youths and Sports, Mr. Solomon Dalung, on Friday said his statement that the Federal Government did not expect the Super Falcons to win the just-concluded CAF African Women Cup of Nations in Cameroon was taken out of context. Dalung made this known at the Presidential Villa in Abuja yesterday when President Muhammadu Buhari received Senator Kabiru Gaya-led committee on the National Youth Open Water Swimming Competition. In his words, "May I conclude by trying to put into proper perspective an impression that has made national headlines to the effect that the Federal Government was not anticipating the victory of the Falcons and so could not have planned for it. This statement was attributed to myself. I want to categorically state that this is a statement taken out of context. And I cannot imagine or reconcile how," he said. Dalung described the government's commitment to supporting the Falcons as overwhelming, saying "That explains why the Vice President himself had to abandon his tight schedule to visit the players in camp. That is evidence of preparations for victory." The minister said the Federal Government was prepared because it had records of the antecedents of the performance of the players. He said the challenge in the payment of the players' bonuses and allowances welfare was being given attention as the government was working around the clock to raise fund to address the issue of their bonuses. http://www.newshelm.com/2016/12/i-was-quoted-out-of-context-about.html cc lalasticlala |
