Interesting...even small Vietnam get clean courts with modern tiles. I went to a magistrate court recently, the dust in that place ehn, and apparently most of the workers dont bother turning up for work . Many are just too greedy and selfish. |
No reasonable SS person will be celebrating the prospect of northerners occupying both the Senate Presidency and HoR speakership. Should that happen, that's the end of the PIB as we know it and we can also say sweet good bye to any oil revenue sharing reform that will benefit the SS. But some will still prefer the north in both positions, just to spite the SW. To what end? Aseni se ra e. |
JingoOAU:Just the order of seniority. Gowon was the earliest head of state, followed by OBJ hence why they stand next to the current President. After OBJ in 1979, then Shagari, Buhari, Babangida, Shonekan, Abdulsalam, then OBJ again - in that order.OBJ don be head of state when GEJ just dey comot secondary school. No wonder OBJ teach am a tough lesson in how not to talk back to your elder. |
chukwudi44:Not that I needed to respond to you, but I understand Mr Arise is going to the House for the first time. The rules of the house are a bit complicated and takes a while to get to grips with. Having a fresher as a Speaker is not the best. And why must I support someone just becos he's from Edo? I dont see everything through a tribal lense. Gbajabiamila is proven and tested, and was a torn in the flesh of the outgoing evil party. But, any other experienced person from the South will do. But not a fresher. |
Beremx:My sister, Tinubu's push must be supported. Nigeria is a country where if you dont ask (aggressively), you dont get. The North has inbuilt majority in both houses to defeat any Southern contestant. So, if you leave it to them, they will vote their people as Senate President and House speaker, and nothing will happen. That is why, the South must negotiate forcefully for one of the positions. These people are instinctively conservative. Having them dominate (which they can with their majority) will stall any form of change. |
I'm so furious with these Northern political jobbers who are now telling the world the SW's contribution was only '500,000' votes. What a joke. With the north occupying all these posts, the SS's fight for increased derivation will be dead in the water. With Gbajabiamila, there is some hope that SS issues will receive a hearing. Northerners will not even allow it to come up for discussion. |
It was the SW that masterminded and drove the momentum that then caught fire accross most parts of the country. Infact, when you look at the margin of victory between him and the rest in the APC presidential primaries, it is clear that Mr Buhari could have lost to Kwankwaso if Tinubu had not shored up support for him from SW delegates. Has he forgotten so soon? |
If Northerners occupy the Presidency, Senate President, and HoR Speaker, that's the end of my support for Buhari. The man needs to understand that he was a nobody and unelectable in the South until ACN merged with his party and repackaged his tainted past. For him to now hands up and say he doesn't want to get involved in the leadership situation in the 2 houses would amount to political naivety, and a northern tribalistic folly that will ensure he only spends one term. Buhari has the authority and influence to call his people to order. He must do so and stop pretending. We cannot have northerners occupying all these positions. Not acceptable under any guise. |
The woman is clearly corrupt. What a disgrace. Dont see how this implicates OBJ directly. |
Nobel laureate and political activist Wole Soyinka has put himself forward as one of three candidates for the position of Oxford professor of poetry, a 300-year-old elected post which is seen as the top academic poetry role in the UK. First held by Joseph Trapp in 1708, the professorship, second only in prestige to that of poet laureate, has been filled in the past by Matthew Arnold, Cecil Day-Lewis, WH Auden, Seamus Heaney and Paul Muldoon. Oxford graduates are due to vote on their choice of the next holder of the highly coveted role next month. Candidates need to be nominated by at least 50 Oxford graduates. Soyinka, who writes drama, novels and poetry, and who was imprisoned in solitary confinement in Nigeria during the 1967-1970 civil war, his poems smuggled out on toilet paper, received more than 90 nominations, including votes from writers Melvyn Bragg and Robert Macfarlane. So far, the second most nominated candidate was backed by 54 Oxford graduates. Let's hope the professor Soyinka nabs this post, which I am sure will make him the first African and probably the first non-white person to occupy the role. http://www.theguardian.com/books/2015/may/07/wole-soyinka-candidates-oxford-professor-of-poetry |
EUROBOMBER:How does working with the SW make them special? If you have a disagreement with your wife, you mean you'll not consider a resolution, because doing so will make her feel special? Very uncivilised approach to life. |
EUROBOMBER:In your previous comment, you lamented how the North dominates the political scene, yet in your permutation above, you'd be quite happy to wait for the same North to partner with your region to reinforce their dominance than for you to end that dominance by working with the SW? ![]() You get sense o. |
VirginFinder:I agree. The core north alone cannot win the Presidency. The key is for us to work with the SW and get some of the NC states on board. H/ever, some from the SS and SE just dont get it. They'd rather have an Hausa man in charge than work with Yorubas! Yet, Yorubas are key to getting 'some' of the changes we need. Yorubas are more progressive than core northerners. Anyday. Will a Senator from Kebbi vote for increased derivation let lone countenance even a limited form of resource control. We need to approach things with our head, not our heart. derivation let alone countenance any form of resource control? We need to approach things with our head, not our heart. |
EUROBOMBER:The only answer to this is for the SS and SE to work with the SW. Before people rain curses , they should know the following:1. Without working with the SW, the SS in particular is doomed to receiving just crumbs from Northern Presidents 2. The hatred some Southern people have for the SW is misplaced and totally unjustified. What exactly has the SW ever done against the SS? 3. I live in Lagos, and even in the SW state where my sister is (not Lagos), all the radio or TV stations have SS and Igbos presenters, some even reading Yoruba news! Their civil service nko? Yorubas are very tolerant and will accommodate & propagate our long term political interest far better than a core Northerner. But people just don't want to accept it becos of some tale their uncles told them about Awolowo during the war. So, Awolowo of 1970 = SW of 2015? We need to approach issues with our head rather than our heart. LET US ENGAGE WITH THE SW or face eternal political slavery. |
I thought nairaland SS and their SE sidekicks claim they want to get out of Nigeria in order to end the North's 'born to rule' mentality? Now that your corrupt PDP leaders are plotting another northern Presidency come 2019 or 2023, what do you have to say? Hehehe...who are the fools now ![]() |
PDP is just the most horrible horrible party. The hurt they have caused this country is too much. We must destroy the party pata pata. PDP...Never Again. |
"...then we paid N56bn interest rate and some remaining exchange rate differentials." What a joke of a country, and a totally incompetent government. Where were they when this humongous interest was accumulating. Imagine how many primary schools we can build with N56bn. Soludo told us this woman was in the administrative dept at the World Bank and was not a world bank economist. Now we know. |
Politics is not a zero sum game. Nobody cuts a deal better than Tinubu. As a pragmatic politician, he will cut a deal and get out better than most. |
Good. Tinubu's Lagos APC team takes over and reverses Buhari's security men who made the initial decision. This team crafted the slow, painful, and inevitable defeat of PDP. They know what PR is all about. Buhari will lead, but Tinubu's boys are strategically placed to checkmate overbearing Northern machinations ![]() I am sure the initial decision never came from Buhari himself, but from over enthusiastic hangers-on around him. |
John Boyega is a lead actor in the next installment of Star Wars, one of hollywood's biggest blockbsuters. Boy is set for superstardom. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/celebritynews/11561512/Star-Wars-The-boy-from-Peckham-who-stormed-Hollywood.html |
asha80:We all want true Federalism with stronger states and a less powerful centre. But that does not equate to resource control. Let's join the SE and SW to increase the advocacy for true federalism that also ensures oil producing states get more revenue than they are getting now. This is far more achievable in the Nigerian context. |
The only way ND will get full control of its resources is by becoming an independent entity. So, why not just start advocating exit from Nigeria? Your SE brothers appear to be ready. Why not join hands with them to strengthen the voice for independence. |
Chiaka:Please tell us what your state contributed to the Federal purse before it started producing oil. Let us negotiate a higher derivation, you say no. It must be resource control. But when asked how you will achieve it, you people fall silent. |
pazienza:But then what is the point of being part of the same country with so - called 'person from the semi deserts of Kano' who you dont want to share in your resources. Being in a country means you agree to pull and share resources and obligations. If ND wants to have its resources to itself, then the brave and honest thing to do is for the region to ask to leave Nigeria. |
pazienza:I agree, that will probably happen. The question is will Nigeria 'give them 100% of their resources.' Please help us understand how that will happen. ND will need to ask to leave Nigeria. Is this on the table in the ND right now? |
eCollynzo:What is desirable and what is achievable are 2 different things. How exactly can Akwa Ibom or any other state get 50% derivative? Does ND have the number in the National Assembly to pass this into law? One commenter said it is possible to resource control without war, yet, he did not say exactly how. |
eCollynzo:I agree, but the only way for ND to have full control will be to extricate itself from Nigeria. Is there an appetite for war right now? And with the type of leaders in the ND, what's to guarantee a ND country will ever be like Dubai. |
Mogidi:Making this a zero sum game will not benefit the ND, as the rest of Nigeria will simply not agree to what you're asking for. So, what do you do? You blow up pipelines. And then Nigeria will say, ok no problem, you can have the oil. You know that's not going to happen. Getting the derivation increased for now is a good compromise deal. |
If you are in a family, and you happen to be blessed than others, it seems reasonable and humane to want to extend your blessings to the other members of the family. My proposal will increase the benefit to the ND whilst ensuring that other members of the 'Nigerian family' also gets something. |
Advocates of resource control want the Federal govt to cede control of the management (including revenue) of the oil and gas resources to the producing areas, with the latter paying a subvention to the centre. This is unrealistic in the current environment. 1. Effectively, militants will decide each month whether to release monthly subventions to the Federal govt. Basically, if Boy Loaf and the rest of them are unhappy about anything, they can decide, yep! no money for you people this month. It's our resources. Go to hell! So, millions of civil servants and the armed forces will go hungry for months. 2. With producing states swimming in billions of dollars, it is only a matter of time before new and more powerful militants and warlords emerge and start fighting each other for control of the region. Meanwhile, unpaid and hungry Federal armed forces will be too demotivated to restore order in the region. Welcome to the new South Sudan. 3. New, powerful and extremely rich Niger Delta states will be fodder for international arms traders who will flood the place ready to do business. Rogue states like North Korea will warms its way into the heart of militants with the supply of sophisticated weaponry. Meanwhile, a lame, financially - deprived, and powerless (no power without money) Federal govt will run to the African Union and UN begging for intervention. Our President will be travelling to South Africa every other week to 'lobby' for military help. Yep, South Africa and Ghana. No one wants this type of Nigeria. ND should negotiate a 20% increase on the present 13% derivation payments. That should take us to 15.6%. Further increase can be negotiated in the future. The granting of oil blocks should be subject to public scrutiny and not just be a matter for a President's exclusive preserve The corrupt and failing NDDC should be reorganised to allow transparency There should be a gradual phasing out of payments to militants A strict, highly punitive, and effective regime for environmental pollution should be put in place. ND oil can and should be used judiciously for the benefit of all Nigerians. |
- in that order.
