Kirigidi: You problem is ignorance! You know nothing about Warri. Who are the people of Okere? For your information, the palace of the Orosuen of Okre-Urhobo Kingdom is located right there in the heart of Okere. Even the permanent secretariat of Okere-Urhobo Youths was built closed to the Okere Market and you dare not park by its gates. People who live in Warri can confirm these to you: Every tribe knows her boundaries in Warri. The Olu's authority is restricted to only the Itsekiri parts of Warri and he never trespasses into Urhobo communities in Warri such as Edjeba, Ogunu, Agbassa, Okere-Urhobo, Okurode-Urhobo, Okumagba, Igbudu, Essi, Ukpokiti, etc. When the Itsekiris are doing their feasts, they do not carry their procession into Urhobo territories in Warri. The Itsekiris are matured and civilized people. They are not like you IPOBians trying to instigate division in Warri because we rejected Biafra! oniovo you should ignore these iPod people.. am glad the new generation urhobo/itsekiri youth like us are wise, he just wants to create issue so we can attack itsekiri. |

darediamond: Itsekiri people are Yoruba's. If you say so, but I think you should respect their decision, the op an itsekiri man acknowledged the fact that itsekiri is a dialect of Yoruba, he even said his ancestors migrated from ijebu, truth is that you can't separate itsekiri from Yoruba when it comes to language, but they choose a new identity. let us not fight over this. @deedeee3 I doubt if you have ever met with any itsekiri man b4, see the way you they throw jab give itsekiri people, some itsekiri's are pro Yoruba have met some even Here on nairaland e. g asaimaigho is pro Yoruba, while some are pro ND, so it's left for them to decide if they want to belong to oduduwa or not |

FisifunKododada: Again not true. The language called Olukunmi is a Yoruba language NOT Igbo. Yes, I have heard that some Olukunmis now see themselves as Igbos. now if I may ask how do you intend claiming those people?, just forget about it and forcus on what you have @hand. to me olukimi only exist online. |

FisifunKododada: Not true. Olukunmis speak a more Yoruba language than Itshekiris.
Me too. I will like to meet some of them. lolx.. you really haven't listen to an itsekiri man speaking, those from ondo can understand him clearly, the olukumis only bear Yoruba name, they ain't yoruboid believe me, they are more igbo. |

OROSUNBOLB: You claimed in your earlier post that Itshekiri are 'hybrid ' people- mixture of Yoruba,Bini and their Neighbours as you pu it. The question is do the Binis and 'their Neighbours' understand any of the words you have posted so far? The reason for that question is that as a Yoruba man,I understand clearly the meaning and usage of every word you put up there 'cause they are my words-my language! My point is very simple- the Itshekiri are Yoruba. You may disagree with me but that is a fact bro. bini and urhobo might not understand itsekiri language because the itsekiri language is purely yoruboid, they only borrowed some words from those tribe why maintaining their original Yoruba dialect. if you read from the front page no body disputed the fact that itsekiri is yoruboid, even the op onuwaje who is an itsekiri man acknowledged the fact that itsekiri language is a Yoruba dialect, as for you claim about itsekiri been yoruba, I think your should respect their stance on this. They choose to call themselves itsekiri, why not respect their decision, speaking same language and bearing same name with you don't make someone a member of your tribe. please let's not derail this thread. thanks |

kn23h: Now, stop disturbing us with those words stolen from Yoruba people. bro relax, I think you need to counter his claim. this is an educative thread, not meant for ewar. just table your matter for ground, bring up the Yoruba words to that. |
Culture › Re: I Want To Learn Itsekiri Language (get In) by Efewestern: 10:51pm On Jul 07, 2017 |
ezeagu: Sure, some of the words are shared with Yoruba as well like Yoruba ogun (twenty) and Igbo ọgụ (twenty).
Some words that are similar here are:
Itsekiri - Igbo ekpetin (box) - akpati ukpo (bed) - ukpo (platform) uko (cup) - iko okérén (man) - okenye okoro (man) - okoro aféré (wind) - ufere (breeze/wind) esin (pig) - ezi etin (ear) - nti tolotolo (turkey) - tolotolo
Just a little similar is Itsekiri soro (stand) and Igbo wuzo (stand) nice , we all share some words together.. simply put we evolve within |

kn23h: Teach us more please. I don't understand itsekiri o, but if you want to know some urhobo words that's similar to itseke I can help you out. Ésété (plate) in urhobo it's o'sete same meaning, Ukujéré (spoon) same in urhobo , uda (sword/cutlass) in urhobo it's oda which means cutlass . simply put, itsekiri is a mixture of Yoruba and urhobo /edo, although 70% of the language are Yoruba words. |

streetsoldier1: Sound so much like ilaje/ikale language yes, if you read my earlier post I said almost same with ondo dialect, never mind itsekiri still remains a key branch of Yoruba language. a dialect of Yoruba. but their identity still remains same. ITSEKIRI. |

This sounds yoruba/ijebu. Great lecture by the way. Can you include audio clips so we can get pronunciation right. are you itsekiri? I think the pronouciation is similar to that of Yoruba. |

ZaraGift: Urhobo borrowed the words from Itsekiri uko doesn't sound yoruboid, so how can itsekiri own it? uko and kokodie are pure urhobo word, no doubt urhobo borrowed some words from itsekiri. |

OAUTemitayo: I know the numbers. So many words there are familiar with Yoruba so I understand them immediately. I must learn Itsekiri. some words are borrowed from urhobo, They make use of "ts" why Yoruba make use of "sh" but I think they are pronounced same way, the itsekiri language is said to b same with the one spoken in ondo, I don't know how true this Is. like oriste / orisha tsola / shola atuwatse / atuwashe the op can list more for you, so learning it won't b difficult. cc: seun and lalasticlala do the needful |

onuwaje: same here i am in cell 003 lol sorry for not mentioning u earlier BEDC so i was in a hurry pls apologies..
yea Itsekiri is a distinct dialect with the Yoruba language so as we go on u will see many similarities
remember i have always said itsekiri is an hybrid tribe mixture of Yoruba,Benin and their neighbours @bolded is itsekiri a dialect or a language. the only benin influence I can see in itsekiri is the culture, apart from that I don't think itsekiri share anything with Benin again, was having a convoc with a guy about this and he said itsekiri migrated from Benin, but I was told itsekiri only adopted a beni prince. You can as well list names of animals. OAUTemitayo and other pro itsekiri on this forum I think this thread will be interesting to you. cheers!!! cc: seun, lalasticlala, please move this to fp when the op finishes with his writing. |
