The FOI act will not constrain private companies to release more information than you can legally have access to today. The bigger impact of the act is on Government / Public establishments.

For your example, Mobil, Total, Shell etc in Nigeria operate as JV's which are majorly controlled by NNPC. Every decision taken by the company is sanctioned by NNPC. Based on that, you can have access to the information of their operations to the limit NNPC can allow. Remember that no matter how free information is, there is always a limit. You cannot ask for information that may compromise the companies' operations.

I  think nairaland should be scrapped because it serves no purpose other than being an outlet where cowardly scoundrels use fake handles to pollute the space. Nairaland is more than a site for "political gossip". It has many other purposes beyond what you currently know. You may need to visit other sections (Autos, Jokes, Family, Games, Jobs, Technology, Properties, Sports, etc) in order to appreciate the potentials of this site. I get informed and entertained anytime I log on to nairaland. You may just need to sieve through, pick what you like and leave the rest.

The method of registration for comments that allows anonymous scoundrels to invade their place with their ignorance and bigotry should also be modified. Registrations should henceforth be with full names and should be linked with a facebook handle that must have the photo of the person. Many websites already operate their comments page only through facebook links.  Linking registrations with facebook will weed out the cowardly scoundrels who pollute every website with their bigotry as such cowardly urchins cannot face the real world in their own skin. They can only hide behind fake handles to self-service their monkey lives.

O thou holy poster, since you do not like the anonymity and freedom of speech this site offers, can you lead the way by telling us your full name and providing a link to your facebook page. Also upload your picture in your profile.

There are many other posters who do not like the tribalism being displayed by some but that is not enough to run down the site.

ACN can decide to take it a step further by recommending their own best brains to partake actively in GEJ's government. There is also nothing wrong with that. Nigeria will be better for it.

I strongly believe ACN has a lot to offer in terms of governance. The reason I resurrected this thread is to correct the erroneous impression some of us here had that ACN will never have anything to do with PDP. Some have the impression that PDP is made up of demons and ACN made up of angels. Many have said "Nothing good can come out of PDP" etc. The lesson to learn is simple. Politics is about interests. It is not war. Bottom line: all hands should be on deck to move the nation forward.

ACN have stated definitively and officially that the Party is not interested in any "Government of National Unity". They hint that it is the PDP's way of weakening the opposition to provide a situation where the government of the day , undemocratically , has no critics . The ACN are happy to be a Government-in-waiting because there is every confidence that the next 4 years will cement the Party's reputation as one that is capable, more than others, of providing good leadership for Nigerians . This belief that the ACN will join a GNU ( see below) is the result of premature talk from an individual that is at odd with the stance reached by the Party. The Party have disowned his statement after meeting to officially take the stand of distancing the ACN from any GNU formed by GEJ.

Funny enough, do you know Companies generate far less waste than Governments? Well run companies reward their staff and customers better and they also provide better services than Governments.

You've said a lot of things but I'll just make a few comments:

1. Call me an apologist or whatever you like. I am me and you cannot change that. Everybody does not need to be anti - government. We already have enough critics out there. People like me are needed to balance out opinions. I like to look at the bigger picture and I could be overly optimistic.

2. When I made the statement, I expected many insults just like yours. I am yet to get the kinds of insults I even expected. I am not bothered about that.

3. Believe it or not, companies do sell of their assets to staff at ridiculously low prices. Enough to make one think they have gone crazy.

4. I agree point 3 above sounds very silly but it is fact! Sorry I cannot and you cannot change it. Maybe you will benefit from such scheme sometime in the future and you will remember someone once told you it exists. 

5. Agreed, Nigeria is NOT a COMPANY but my opinion of governance has always been to run the country the way you would run a world class company. That is my view and approach to government. The nation should be seen as a large organization with the bottom-line of making profit and growing in a competitive market. I don't have enough time and energy to explain my political views right now. I hope you get the big picture.

@ emmatok, I think you are among those who are exposed enough to know what I have been talking about. It is quite difficult for people to understand though.

Remember there is a distinction between a company selling to dealers in the open market and a company selling to its staff.

Anyway, for the sake of clarity, the point I have been trying to make is that there is no big deal in this news. If anything, it goes to show that government is becoming more transparent and accountable. Read the last part of the article:

A Senator told one of our correspondents that he was aware that the vehicles would be sold at a price to be determined by the management.

He said, “I can assure you that the vehicles will not be taken away as has been alleged. It is likely going to be offered to legislators to buy.

“If I am offered one, I am going to buy. It is only fair that once legislators are leaving, the vehicles cannot be taken away just like that; but if legislators are allowed to pay for them, I think that is only fair.”

National Assembly’s Director of Information, Mr. Monima Daminabo, confirmed the proposed sale of the vehicles, but said the disposal would be done according to laid down rules and regulations of the civil service.

He said, “There is a laid down procedure, which must be followed. The cars will not be taken away by any body. The management is currently working on it and will follow strictly the laws on the matter.”

On the amount that the vehicles would be sold to the legislators, Daminabo noted that all the cars were not purchased at the same amount, even as they were not also subjected to similar depreciating pressures.

He, however, would not confirm the controversy raging between the legislators and the management on the appropriate value for the vehicles, saying that a department of the National Assembly was still working on the proper price of the vehicles.

Most people have focused on the offer they made without reading the whole article. A car dealer will even offer N1 if he can so what is the big deal about the offer? The article shows that a proper price will be determined considering their laid down procedure. Journalists only enjoy making a big deal out of the little issues.

Perhaps, my problem is seeing things half filled rather than half empty.

the point is that he can loot the state with or without giving up his salary,and he certainly doesnt need the people's support to do that as nigeria is presently.

* You can buy a house in Lagos for less than 2 million naira via company auctions.

Economics 101: Salvage Value is NOT equal to "scrap" value.

^ The simple solution to that attitude is to cut off those lazy guys or make them work for their money! It is the responsibility of the governor to ensure his staff are adding value. Complacency should not be tolerated. The minimum wage can be implemented if they do their job well.

I know my comment WILL attract strong criticism. People have bought items worth tens of millions for less than 1m through similar auctions in well respected world class companies. You can even get a 2008 Toyota Camry for 50k. Any financial analyst or corporate accountant can tell you how a company depreciates its assets. They can also tell you what the salvage value of a car is after 3 years. Those who have enough exposure know what I'm talking about.

There are many levels in life. When you climb up the ladder, you will discover that there is no "bad" news here.

Going by the FOI Act, I am entitled to the information and I demand it as my right. If you refuse, I will charge you to court for violating my rights!!!
