Yeah that's interesting to know. I however do not think it has anything to do with the River Niger. Same way people say KD (for Kaduna), Lag (for Lagos) B-side (for Benin), PH, etc. The origin of these slangs is very hard to trace and there is usually no logic to it. It just springs up and everyone somehow begins to use it.

@ Playmode, the number 1 citizen of the China you mentioned also visited USA some time ago. Going by your "lick the a.z.z" analogy, China is licking USA's a$$. Indeed the whole world licks USA's a$$. In that case, if licking a$$ is what is moving the world forward, Obama is welcome to lick Nigeria's a$$!!!

It is difficult but not impossible for PDP to make the come-back because, they have the resources to shop for the best candidates. They will have to re-focus on performance driven governance and present extremely strong candidates. ACN will also need to make some serious mistakes for it to happen. In a place like Lagos for example, if ACN makes the mistake of presenting a weak candidate due to internal politics, they will pay dearly. Generally, I think they will need more than 2 tenures to outdo ACN if they play the cards right.

@ OP first let me commend you for your thought provoking post. You have also shown yourself to be one of the few that have successfully transformed to become "Nigerian".

Now to your question. I would prefer to say that the "southerners" are being tolerant and not weak minded. Strength is not in how much you can destroy but in how much you can build. The reasons for this tolerance are not too difficult to see. I believe religion and western orientation have also played a role.

A level of trust has been built over time and we can see the evidence in simple examples. Take an average house in the south for example, who will most likely be employed as a gateman or security man? You want to buy suya on your street; who do think of? You want to buy dollars, euros or pounds; who do you think of? These three examples have something in common: TRUST. We have somehow been able to accept these people as part of us to some extent. However, provocations like the recent one can breed mistrust and new fault lines can develop.

Regarding this matter of Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, Ijaw etc, I detest tribalism so much that I hardly ever make comments on issues raised on the subject. This is probably the first time I am making a direct comment on the matter. I believe people who keep on bashing others based on tribe are simply operating a lower level of reasoning. I often ignore such posts. My advice is for such people to GROW UP. I have very good friends from all over Nigeria and their tribe has nothing to do with their personality. You can be born anywhere on earth but it is up to you to build your own character. I have the same ideology on issues like marriage also. You can get married to any one on earth be it Indian, Russian, American, Hausa, Yoruba, Mixed breed or whatever. It is the character of the person and the understanding between parties that matters most. I rest my case.

^ Exactly. He also had a hand in the underground deal with ACN. I remember quoting Obj many times on this forum before the election when he said "I am ready to die for Nigeria". He didn't say those words for nothing. What happened in the SW was all part of the plan. Some people never believed ACN could have anything to do with PDP but here we are. OBJ is a smart politician and PDP is a highly strategic party. Once they were able to get through the primaries, they were set for everything. Politics is a very complex game. Only those who play the game at that level really know what goes on. We do not hear up to half of what really goes on in the news.

It is definitely a good sign. It represents Nigeria's new significance on the international scene. Would you prefer that nobody wants to visit Nigeria? We do not live in a bubble so I do not expect people to say we do not want or need Obama's visit. Every country has its problems but it doesn't stop them from associating with others. Like it or not Obama's presence in a country speaks volumes!

How does this concern Obama's peace prize? These are part of the reasons why USA is not in command. They know matters like these will come up and they have carefully prepared a cliff for the USA haters to jump off from!

@ Mrjingles, many of us understand the benefits of the cashless system and are in support of it. I use e banking services a lot and I like it. What we are saying is that the approach is not right.

Secondly, The way the matter has been presented, the train will definitely not take off as expected. It will meet a strong brick wall just like the Devaluation idea. The policy has not even passed through the NASS fire yet. CBN is just flexing muscles for now. Wait till the politicians settle down from the election.

Anyway, it will never work. ACN will only self destruct with such move. We know the man is performing but I can assure you there are others coming behind him that can do better. It is true that you can not deposit more than EUR 10,000 without saying where you get the money from. However, this has gotten nothing to do with encouraging cashless transaction, but rather is a tool to couner money laundry and lately international terrorism.

And the reason you can not cash more than a certain amount of money at an ATM is really simple. You sould know that!

Great point you made here. In the "almighty" Europe, they ask you questions when you start dealing with figures like EUR10,000 (which is about N2,000,000). They do not even stop you from making the transactions. Others simply ask for an advance notice. The limit proposed here is N150,000! That is damn too low and the penalty is too high. If we must go this way, a figure like N1,000,000 with a fine of say 1% i.e N10 per N1000 (for cash withdrawals only) would have made more sense. I do not see why deposits should also be affected. The deposits need to be encouraged to ensure the cash is being absorbed from the system.

Generally, we all agree a cashless system is preferable and we know the benefits. The approach to the issue is what many people do not like. A lot has been said already. Just like what someone mentioned about the ATMs. CBN did not need to create any law to FORCE people to start using ATMs. Let the infrastructure be developed and every other thing will follow. Similarly, NCC did not need to point a gun to anybody's head before people started buying mobile phones. The infrastructure was introduced and people willingly paid the money to acquire their own mobile phone line.

Nigerians like good things and will willingly embrace change when it is introduced with a smiling face rather than when it is forced on them with an angry face.

They also have to review inter-bank transfer policies and charges for it to make some sense.

The funny part is that the penalty also applies to deposits!

It is a fake. Beaf dealt with some folks during the election and a lot of them began to have sleepless nights hence the impersonation.

@ ekt_bear, you got the point. For every penalty on cash transactions, there should be an incentive on cashless transactions. That's exactly how it should work. CBN needs to ensure the alternative route is well developed and accessible to all before introducing strict penalties. The way it has been presented, people will still find a way around it but the bankers will have more work on their hands. By the time Mr. Cashier is treating 10 tellers for 1 transaction, they will start crying out.

Incentives like access to credit. There are many more ways and the bankers know it.

The idea is that an alternative should always be provided before removing the bread from people's mouths.

For deposits, simply fill multiple deposit slips with different depositor names. 

There are better ways to encourage cashless transactions. Instead of imposing ridiculous fines on cash transactions, why not introduce incentives for making cashless transactions.

@ aguiyi, it's like you just read my mind. Immediately after reading the article, I made up my mind to resurrect all my dormant accounts, open new ones and issue multiple cheques for one account. Many people will end up operating several accounts to escape paying this fine.
