When making your judgement on this matter, consider all the aspects of the elections (presidential, parliamentary and state elections). Consider also, the controls, the voting system, the coverage etc.

It is the best in our history. Some say "June 12" was better but one reason why I believe otherwise is that the electorate is more enlightened now. Back then, many Nigerians did not even know what the elections were all about and figures could have been cooked from anywhere without anybody knowing. The 2011 elections had its own shortcomings but in all, it's the best we've had.

Nairaland is here to stay. But I agree we need better moderation in politics section. We need to put a lot of tribalistic and false rumour threads where they belong.

That will be serious confusion for the masses. But any two can pair up to form a good team.

What I think is that more youths, intellectuals, the whole of the SW, and a fair portion of the rest of Nigeria will prefer Fashola. Besides, people are already getting tired of PDP. A candidate needs good home support to win any election. Fashola can get 90% of the SW for starters. How much can Sambo get back home? If ACN can dig their claws into certain Northern quarters before 2015 (by an alliance or whatever), it will be an epic battle.

Sambo is too weak and he may not even get enough support from the north. If ACN presents Fashola against him, that will be a masterstroke. The only thing that may work against Fashola is tribalism and sentiments.

PDP needs a northern candidate for 2015. At least for a single tenure (2015 to 2019). Afterwards, a very strong candidate from the SE can be presented. PDP needs to start building up whoever they intend to present from the SE from now. The candidate has to be a top performer cos it will be a tough battle at that time if someone like Fashola is presented from the SW.

What is the FG doing about corruption? There you go ^

THE Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) has recovered a total of N1.7 trillion ($11 billion) since its inceptions in 2003, the agency’s boss, Mrs. Farida Waziri, said in Lagos, yesterday.

According to her, N975 billion ($6.5 billion) was recovered in the last two years alone. These recoveries included some part of the Late General Sani Abacha’s loot, as well as some arising from the bank sanitisation exercise, which the commission embarked on with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

“Expectedly, a substantial portion of these recoveries are government funds that have been siphoned and criminal proceeds from bank frauds. It will do us well to explain the avenues of the recovery and the use, of which this recovered funds are channeled. Restitution may not be the primary motive of the work of the commission, but it is  important to investigate and prosecute criminals”, she said.

Also, she said that in cases of official corruption and theft of government funds, the proceeds of crime are remitted to the office of the Accountant General of the Federation of Nigeria or that of the applicable state government, as required by the public service rules. Where the victim is private entity, the proceeds of the crime are given to such private entity.

A review of the recoveries made by the commission between June 2008 and March 2011, revealed that N975 billion ($6,500,000,000) was recovered.

A sector by sector break-down of these recoveries, showed that N650 billion ($4.3 billion) was recovered from the banking sector, N3.5 billion ($23.3 million) from taxation, N150 billion ($ 10 million) from local business/firm, N36 billion ($ 240 million) from multi-national penalties and N135.5 billion ($903 .3 million) from others Forfeitures, AFF, among others.

She said recoveries and convictions in the last two and half years under her watch, constitute about 60 percent of the total success story of the commission.

She said the success was not accidental but a function of a change in the right direction.

“Our experience has been that working within the limits of the law has challenged our capacity and let to more in-depth analysis and investigation”, she added.

This has there fore meant that cases are more vigorously investigated, leaving no loophole for defense attorneys to take advantage of, she explained.

According to her, 105 cases involving Politically Exposed Persons (PSP) were handled within the period, from which 36 convictions were recorded, while 75 cases are still under trial.

The commission said it was investigating 448 cases of advanced fee fraud, after convicting 428, just as another 789 suspects are still undergoing trial.

On money laundering, it said 26 cases were under investigation, 163 cases under trial, while 15 are already convicted. As regards cyber crime/Internet fraud, 186 cases are currently under investigation, 476 under trial with 137 number of convictions.

However, Waziri lamented that the commission has continuously found itself “in the eye of the storm”, as a result of executing its mandate of providing financial security for the Nigerian economy.

I have a dream that one day, Nigerians in USA will dominate the nation in every aspect.

I need a clarification here. Is CBN saying that someone will be penalized if he receives over 150k in cash per day (for example, 20k from 10 different cash transactions ie (10 x 20,000 = 200,000)? Or is it 150k max per transaction?

If so, we need to examine the CBN management for other symptoms of madness.

The offer was made in secret and the deal was also sealed in secret. What makes you feel they will openly acknowledge it for now? Let's wait till the appointments are made.

If ACN leaders know what they are doing, it should make them stronger and not weaker. It will be an opportunity to showcase their competence at the national level. Even the republicans in USA are a major part of Obama's decision making process.

Good development. What matters most is that Nigeria moves forward and everyone is on board (as much as possible). It is politics not war. CPC should watch and learn.

Delivering judgment, Mohammed overruled the counsel’s pleas and sentenced the accused to one year imprisonment on the first count with an option of N10,000 fine.

On the second count, the Chief Magistrate sentenced Owoademi to a year imprisonment with an option of N20,000 fine.

On the third count, the convict was jailed for two years with an option of  N30,000 fine.

WTH !!! 

That is damn too lenient! A lot is wrong with our legal system. That's how Lucky Igbinedion was allowed to go free after paying some chicken change.
