Politics › Nigeria Should Cut All Diplomatic Ties With Saudi Arabia by egift(op): 6:20am On Feb 12, 2010
Yar'Adua if own by Nigeria and stopped being a private citizen the day he assumed the office of the president. Now if he is hiding in Saudi Arabia the Royal family owes Nigeria the duty to produce him - if the want us to still have a good relationship. If not for the strength of Saudi as a nation I will even recommend a Military engagement.

The idea that Nigerians do have have access to him can't be accepted in any sane nation. Otherwise Goodluck E. Jonathan should be vested with the full power of a C-in-C. And we will leave Yar'Adua, his family and Saudi Arabia alone. This will make the Nigeria elite to fall in line and restore normalcy to our system.

Intervening what huh He inherited a booming banking system, instead of making it better, for where. Same mentality that has kept us down in this country - make his predecessor look very bad.

Instead of building on what he got, he decides to pull it down - and point fingers at Soludo. Goodluck should warn this guy cos he is very aware that rumours and bad policies hurts our economy badly.

They had these planned for long, how is it that anyone captured, without questioning will claim he is PDP. If the man found with voters card and national IDs the other day was not well known, he too would have claimed to be working for PDP.

When other parties rig - many Nigerians will accept it, but if its PDP the sky will be let loose. It bothers me that the election was badly conducted and even if it was to be free and fair - the masses will throw their prospect into the gutter just to slight a political party.

The truth is Nigeria has a long way to go.
Politics › Anambra Election: A Missed Opportunity by egift(op): 3:39pm On Feb 07, 2010
There are so many opportunities that was wasted in the just concluded Governorship Election in Anambra State.
1. INEC: They had an opportunity to conduct an election that will at least put them and the nation in a good light, but it was far from it.
2. Security: Despite putting thousands of Army, Police and others on ground, its like the plan was just to make their presence felt and prevent violence. There was no clear plan on there role in coordinating the movement of officials and materials.
3. The People of Anambra: They missed the opportunity to become one of the strongest economic centre in the nation. Dumping growth just to slight others. I hope Obi will adopt some of the policies of all the other candidates.
4. Reality: Yes many are missing reality, if one believe this is a credible election - over 50% could not find there name, elections started very late, etc.
5. We lost leadership in the person of Iwu. Yet he will see nothing wrong with this election. Hope they will pass a vote of confidence on him again

I will say congrats to Gov. Peter Obi, but this election is nothing to write home about.

Wiki: Andy Uba

Mr Andy Uba (born 14 December 1958) is a Nigerian politician and was a former governor of Anambra State. He was llegally sworn in on 29 May 2007 and was told to vacate the office on the 14th of June 2007. The Nigerian Supreme Court ruled that the election that brought him into power was illegal and should never have held, why? In essence he was never elected a governor, how come he was sworn in? He is a member of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP).

Andy Uba was a special assistant on domestic matters to the former President of Nigeria Olusegun Obasanjo between 1999 and 2006. He is the elder brother to one of the PDP chieftains and moneybag, Chris Uba and also of Ugochukwu Uba, a senator in the upper legislative house of Nigeria. Dr Andy Uba won the April 14 gubernatorial elections in Anambra State with over 70% of total votes cast despite having entered the gubernatorial race just 6 months earlier. The elections were described as a charade by international observers.

In 2006 the Nigerian investigative journalist, Omoyele Sowore uncovered a case of money smuggling levelled against Andy Uba by the FBI. Andy Uba was accused of smuggling $170,000 to the United states aboard the Nigerian presidential jet without declaring the money to the United states authorities. The FBI was alerted to the activities of his proxy, Loretta Mabinton after a series of suspicious deposits into her bank accounts. On investigation it was discovered that Mabinton bought a Mercedes-Benz SL car worth $97,000 for Uba and shipped it to Nigeria. The car was subsequently returned to the United States. $45,000 was also used to purchase farm equipment for Nigeria's president Obasanjo's farm in Otta, Nigeria. After a long investigation, Uba agreed to settle the case out of court and forefeited $26,000 to the United States government. [1]. [2]

He claims to hold a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) from Concordia University, Montreal, Canada, an M.Sc. from California State University and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Biological Sciences from the unaccredited Buxton University, UK. However, his academic qualifications are in dispute; there is evidence that he was enrolled at Concordia University, and California State U., but no evidence that he graduated from any of the schools. In addition, the degree from Buxton University was one based on Correspondence.

In a landmark ruling delivered by the Supreme court of Nigeria on the 14th of June 2007, Andy Uba was told to vacate the office of governor of Anambra state with immediate effect and the former governor, Peter Obi was re-instated and is to serve as governor till March 17 2010. The supreme court further stated that INEC erred by conducting elections in Anambra state when the serving governor still had over 2 years left to serve. the verdict of the supreme court carried out two meanings because according to Nigeria constitution, the supreme court has no juridistion to attend election tribunal. What the supreme court rule was peter obi has to complete his tenur as it is protected by the Nigeria constitution and the supreme court has no jurisdiction to rule that the 2007 election was null and void. andy uba recently is still going to claim his tenure as he has been sworn in by chief judge of Anambra state and he was also the governor of Anambra State based on the 2007 election he won. He recently went to the Supreme court to ask them to over-rule the earlier verdict, but had it withdrawn on 8th of May, 2009. [3]

@ metal-gong I saw this posted by Soludo Team, maybe you can have a look at what he too have to say about his CV, enjoy:

PART ONE: Here I Am, Send Me! My Background and Decision to Contest
I believe that God has a purpose and a plan for everyone. From my very humble beginnings, it is only through the grace of God that I could have earned a Distinction grade at the secondary school; a B.Sc (First Class Honours) (Economics); an M.Sc. and a Ph.D (Economics) winning Departmental, Faculty and University awards as best graduating student at the University of Nigeria. I had cumulative four years of post-doctoral training and research in some of the world’s best institutions including the Brookings Institution, Washington, DC; University of Oxford, UK; University of Warwick, UK; Cambridge University as Smuts scholar; UN Economic Commission for Africa; the IMF Research Department, etc. I am a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers (FCIB); Fellow of the Nigerian Economic Society (FNES), and awarded Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) (Honoris Causa) from three Universities.

I was visiting Associate Professor at Swarthmore College, USA, and promoted Professor of Economics at the age of 38 (University of Nigeria, Nsukka). I lived and worked in Ethiopia, U.K., and the USA and travelled to 45 other countries before joining Government in 2003. As consultant to 18 international organizations (including the World Bank, IMF, OECD Paris, European Union, African Union, USAID, UK-DFID, ADB, IBM Consulting, USA; IDRC Canada; Chemonics International, USA; United Nations, UNIDO, ECOWAS, COMESA, CODESRIA, UNCTAD; AERC Nairobi) I garnered wide ranging experiences and knowledge. I was also the founding Executive Director of the African Institute for Applied Economics, Enugu. I have to my credit over 80 scholarly publications, 15 books, and over 250 monographs, conference papers and public lectures.

At the Federal Government (2003 – 2009), I held five substantive positions: Chief Economic Adviser to the President; Deputy Chairman/Chief Executive of the National Planning Commission (of ministerial rank by law); Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria; Chairman, Nigeria Security Printing and Minting Company (NSPM), Plc; Founder and Chairman, Africa Finance Corporation (AFC), as well as membership of more than 25 technical/policy committees. These assignments saw us draft the Government’s reform agenda (National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy, NEEDS); massively restructured nonperforming government institutions; rebuilt the CBN and NSPM; revolutionalized the Nigerian banking/financial system; set up a new international financial institution, AFC, and helped to steer the Nigerian economy away from the global financial crisis. For these accomplishments, I have been decorated with scores of awards, including being awarded the African and Global Central Bank Governor of the year, 2006 by the Banker (Financial Times) and the Financial Times of London has described me as “a great reformer”. The Federal Government has conferred the third highest national honour (Commander of the Federal Republic, CFR) on me in 2006--- in recognition of accomplished performance.

Recently, I have served as a member of the United Nations Commission of Experts on the Global Economic and Financial Crisis. Also, I have served as a member of the International Advisory Group for the UK- DFID, and still member of the 7- man Chief Economist Advisory Council of the World Bank. Immediately after completing my tenure of office as Governor of the Central Bank, I have accepted three international offers.

I served the Federal Government of Nigeria under two Presidents and below are excerpts of what each had to say about my services to Nigeria:

“Charles Soludo is a true Nigerian. He is the sort of Nigerian that we all know we can rely on. Among his numerous virtues is COURAGE. I have found in him a man who can take tough and realistic decisions, stand his ground, educate others on the salience of his decision, and work very hard to ensure that the decision is efficiently and effectively implemented. His dedication to duty is first rate. His leadership qualities are admirable and his willingness to listen and learn is simply infectious.
Professor Soludo has within a short time emerged as one of the leading lights of our nation. Not because he has a godfather but by sheer hard work, loyalty, dedication to duty, commitment to the nation, creativity, and undiluted association with the reform agenda, ”. Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR (December, 2004)

President Yar’Adua had the following the say about the CBN under my leadership:

“… the CBN has performed creditably well in delivering on its core mandates. This is especially even more so in the last five years. Most people would agree that without the successful banking consolidation and effective management of our foreign reserves, the current global crisis would have shaken the financial system and our national economy to their foundations with calamitous consequences”; President Yar’Adua (May 2009).

In the President’s letter of commendation after completion of my tenure of office, the President had the following to say:

“As your tenure as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria comes to a glorious end, I write on behalf of the Government and people of Nigeria to place on record our debt of gratitude to you for your dedicated service and uncommon sense of duty over the past five years. I am confident that your worthy antecedents in the CBN and in prior appointments in the service of our nation remain sources of inspiration to an entire generation. As I wish you even more astounding successes in the years ahead, it is my fervent hope that you will readily avail us of your distinguished service when the need arises in the future” (June 2009).
