ProgrammingRe: Is Python Really Worth The Buzz And Hype It's Getting ? by ektbear: 2:17am On May 20, 2012
Pythonistas, how would you suggest making this less ugly?

So I have a function which, given an integer start that represents a Tuesday for a month, returns the dates of all tuesdays and thursdays after and including that for a month.

For example, for the month of May, May 8 was a Tuesday. So this function should return 8, 10, 15, 17, etc, up to say some upper bound of 31 (we just pretend that every month has 31 days, to keep things simple.)

I have a function. But it is sort of ugly...

Is there a prettier/better way of doing this? This isn't aesthetically pleasing to me...

New Nigeria Newspaper?

Reviving a newspaper is a task for the 19 northern governors? Surely that cannot be anywhere near the top of the priority list.

Man. This would be funny if it weren't so sad and pathetic.

HealthRe: Federal Doctors In Lagos Begin Solidarity Strike For Sacked Colleagues by ektbear: 8:39am On May 19, 2012
Mind you, if you look at the history, it didn’t start today. If you look at the circular they are talking about, it was a Federal Circular affecting only federal institutions.
wtf? Then why did anybody ask LASG to implement CONMESS?

its actually funny how u respond when ur points r defeated.u r obviously here to push ur capitalist agenda and have no knowledge of the remote causes of the problem or even d present state of things.u r a most misinformed capitalist sir!
ok since it seems u r unaware (this present case....d illegal sacking of doctors) is already in court.
u r d grandmaster of d lodge of goalpost shifters cheesy
u said it wasn't illegal to deprive d doctors of conmess,u were shown why it is illegal u shifted goalpost to "they should sue them"
u were informed that they had been sued in d past and dt this contributed to d signed agreement on CONMESS so now u hav shifted goalpost to "they should sue them again".
can u see how perverse you appear?
I don't think that my points have been defeated. You claim CONMESS is binding upon Lagos State. Lagos obviously disagrees. This is a matter for a court of law, not for you or I to decide.
HealthRe: Federal Doctors In Lagos Begin Solidarity Strike For Sacked Colleagues by ektbear: 2:09am On May 19, 2012
It will be up to the courts to decide whether CONMESS is binding on Lagos State.

Until they make their decision, then nobody can say that it is necessarily binding on them.
HealthRe: Federal Doctors In Lagos Begin Solidarity Strike For Sacked Colleagues by ektbear: 1:40am On May 19, 2012
*shrug*

Well, then let them be taken to court again.
HealthRe: Federal Doctors In Lagos Begin Solidarity Strike For Sacked Colleagues by ektbear: 1:15am On May 19, 2012
Post the full CONMESS here, show us that not implementing it fully is illegal.

NSIWC being established by legislative act doesn't mean that its decisions are binding. If they say that in Lagos State, everyone must buy a pet frog, this won't necessarily have the force of law.

Anyway, if anyone believes that Lagos is violating the law by not implementing it, then they should take LASG to court.
HealthRe: Federal Doctors In Lagos Begin Solidarity Strike For Sacked Colleagues by ektbear: 12:58am On May 19, 2012
If anyone else has evidence that not implementing CONMESS fully is illegal, kindly provide it here.

http://mobile.saharareporters.com/news-page/lagos-doctors-strike-escalate-federal-colleagues-warm-join

In September 2009, following several years of negotiations between the Nigerian Medical Association and the Federal Government, the Consolidated Medical Salary Scale circular SWC/S/04/S.410/220 was released by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission. The main principle of CONMESS is to serve as a minimum universal scale of remuneration for all doctors in Nigeria regardless of location or employer, in order to curb internal brain drain. CONMESS is also intended to correct the wage disparity that has seen doctors’ salaries being progressively reduced relative to other professionals over the years following repeated wage reviews.
Does this "circular" have the same legal force as a law passed by the federal government?

Circular suggests advisory, not mandatory.

If advisory, then LASG is under no obligation to implement it...

afrodoc: can u see another anti-information guy,yet he seems like an exposed guy.
ekt_bear the federal govt has passed a law stating the minimum value of X.....IT IS CALLED CONMESS!!!
have u bothered to even research the particulars of this imbroglio or have u just come here to pontificate abt d free market society?
Where is the law saying that Lagos State must implement CONMESS?

Are you sure that it doesn't apply only for FEDERAL workers, not state workers?

If the Lagos government is violating the law by not passing CONMESS, then presumably someone would have taken them to court already....

Kindly provide evidence that Lagos's actions are illegal.

I don't think those two songs suck though. Just a different style. 80s rap sounds quite different from 90s rap, which sounds different from 2000s rap.

That 1990 song you post sounds 80sish. But it isn't necessarily terrible.

texazzpete: So hypothetically, you would have been happy to stridently support Fashola if last year he had decided not to pay the minimum wage of 18k to state workers...and the workers had gone on strike?
If the FG passes a law that the national minimum wage is X, then there is absolutely nothing Fashola can do, is it? Unless he wants to violate existing law.

Finally, if you admit it is the duty of the Government to maximize their own enjoyment even if it means its at the expense of the employees...why are you so against GEJ and the PDP? Afterall it can be argued by them that Nigeria is ticking just fine (and the big boys are enjoying) even if the masses are complaining grin
huh

What on earth are you talking about? This isn't anything abstract about government maximizing enjoyment.

This is an employer trying to maximize the amount of healthcare it can provide subject to some budgetary constraints. What is the connection between this and "big boys are enjoying"?

A couple of weeks ago, I was shopping for a programmer to complete a job for me. I posted an advertisement, and was able to find someone who met my standards but who also came very cheap ($6/hour). Would I also be tyrannical or like GEJ and the PDP if I chose the cheaper guy who can supply the labor I want to buy rather than the other people who also placed bids for this job at $12, $14, $16/hour?

Why on earth shouldn't I (or any employer for that matter) be free to hire who I like, at the rate I like?

Someone kindly explain to me why an employer cannot decide who he gets to employ, and at what rate.

Without math skills, we won't ever have any hope of being good at science and engineering.
HealthRe: Federal Doctors In Lagos Begin Solidarity Strike For Sacked Colleagues by ektbear: 9:44pm On May 18, 2012
The salary for level X is determined by the free market.

If there are 1000 level X doctors, and some are willing to work cheaper then others, rationally I should hire as many of these inexpensive level X doctors as I can.

So if there are level X doctors willing to accept what you call "level X/2" salary, then so be it...Lagos should go to them first before going for more expensive ones.

Like I said, I believe in freedom for both employers and employees. For the former to hire as cheaply as possible, and for the latter to sell their labor as high as they want.
HealthRe: Federal Doctors In Lagos Begin Solidarity Strike For Sacked Colleagues by ektbear: 9:41pm On May 18, 2012
afrodoc: so wats that level? should it be up to the level obtainable in ghana, gambia, botswana, south africa?
if u want it up to those levels why then are u paying d workers below that level?
u want ur doctor to work up to level X but u r paying him salary X over 2!
I'm not the one who sets the level. Lagos government and Lagos folk decide what they want the minimum quality level of a doctor to be for their state.

But once they've decided what X is, then buy as much labor at that quality level as they can. Which necessarily means finding the cheapest guys you can at the level of quality you want..
HealthRe: Federal Doctors In Lagos Begin Solidarity Strike For Sacked Colleagues by ektbear: 9:32pm On May 18, 2012
So to be 100% clear, cheapest labor possible subject to quality being above level X.

Not just cheapest labor, with no constraints on quality.
HealthRe: Federal Doctors In Lagos Begin Solidarity Strike For Sacked Colleagues by ektbear: 9:30pm On May 18, 2012
What I and anybody buying or employing healthcare is as many options as possible. To be able to negotiate the price we want to pay freely.

Not to be blackmailed into paying more for healthcare than we have to.

HealthRe: Federal Doctors In Lagos Begin Solidarity Strike For Sacked Colleagues by ektbear: 9:23pm On May 18, 2012
@texazzpete: You seem to keep missing the point. The hypocrisy and selfishness of the doctors is not what I base my position on. It is highly amusing to me, but not the main issue.

The main issue is freedom for both employers and employees. For the former to buy labor as cheaply as possible, and for the latter to sell it to the highest bidder.

Why this point is so difficult for you to understand is beyond me.

courage89: Thats not true? The OS may be free to users...but to companies who are using them as a "competitive advantage", they have to pay a royalty fee. Samsung and other smart phone makers run Android OS. The operating system is part of the reason why Samsung still maintains leadership in global smartphone marketshare.
Aren't the fees tiny? Minuscule?

PoliticsRe: To Become A Millionaire In North America Is Hard! by ektbear: 7:59pm On May 18, 2012
Obiagu1: The question is, could the poor untalented ones make it?

Having studied the economy of North America, I can tell you no, they can't make it or it's very difficult for them to make it. However, in other less developed countries, they could. Now how is that possible? The only sector of the economy that could happen is trade. Anyone could make it there, talented or not. This is why I emphasized that Nigeria should protect that sector and prevent the likes of WalMart and Shoprite from keeping the poor forever poor. If not for trade, we won't have the likes of Dangote, Ibeto or Innoson.
Again, you are underestimating these Dangotes, Ibetos, and Innosons. They may seem untalented to you. But they must have had something that distinguished them from their peers.
PoliticsRe: To Become A Millionaire In North America Is Hard! by ektbear: 7:57pm On May 18, 2012
Errr.

I'm not making that claim. I am attempting to summarize your position and give you the chance to clarify it (hence the question mark at the end of the sentence).

The smaller the gap is, then the weaker your argument becomes. "Easily" vs. "can't" was your best case...
